The coolest DT related event on Howard was a few months ago.
Again, they were playing The Mirror while coming back from
a commercial. Howard was getting into it as usual. Then
he says "Man, when the gates of hell open up, I guarantee
this is the song that will be playing."

    Quote of the decade. :)

This is like deja vu and shit, because last night I was pondering on the lyrics to Scarred. I always thought it was along the same lines as Lie and The Mirror.... betrayal and stuff. But a couple of lines throw me off:

"Won't let them rape me again, you're venom's not family here, won't let them fill me with fatalistic remedies." ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

For awhile, I though it had something to do with AIDS....

    "30 year's say we're in this together"

considering that JP's about 30 yres old, it could only mean it's one of his parents.

and the lines following this one up till the second chorus also throw me off. Does anyone have a clue?

"Excuse me sir, why do you have hair all over your car?"

    "GRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!"

OK, how come racists always get their comeuppance, and sexists are always berated, and homophobes get put in their place, yet the above BLATANT EXAMPLES OF AGEISM are allowed to go unchallenged on the Ytsejam??? Yes, Ageism is the last bastion of the closet bigot, and apparently we have many of them on the 'jam today. This must be stopped!

And furthermore . . . uh . . . er . . . damn, I forgot what I was gonna say, but I KNOW IT WAS IMPORTANT, (or was that impotent), but anyway, you young whippersnappers should remember that you had to work for a living back when I was still in kneepants, uh, shit . . . well you know what I mean! And back in the days when I had to walk 10 miles to school in a blizzard, and it was uphill BOTH WAYS, and a man was damn glad to work for a dollar a day, well, um, THOSE WERE THE DAYS, that's for sure, mister, and you can take THAT to the bank!

I hope that straightened you all out . . .

So, Al, what kind of tastes are us "40-some-odd year-old men" supposed to have anyway? 'Cuz I think I'm way off . . . Currently in my RX-7's 10-disc

In the 5-disc changer in my computer room:

King's X - "Gretchen Goes To Nebraska" Rush - "2112" Foo Fighters - "The Colour and The Shape" Rage Against the Machine - "Evil Empire" Galactic Cowboys - "Machine Fish"

In the 7-disc changer in the entertainment center:

DT - "Instrumental II" DT - "ACOS" DT - "Live at the Marquee" DT - "WDADU" Savatage - "Dead Winter Dead" Shadow Gallery - "Carved in Stone" Steve Vai - "Fire Garden"

    In the computer:

VA - "Working Man" Rush tribute

    In the boombox at work:

Guess I'm weird for a "40-some-odd year-old man". I just hope I never grow up . . . But I have all of YOU jammers to thank for letting me know about the finest music on the planet! No hard feelings, Al . . . (actually, no hard ANYTHING here! hehe - guess what? that's just a myth too.)

$25 is cheap for an Angra CD here in Sydney, try AUS$39.99-$49.99 for an Angra CD, depending on the country it is imported from. I agree they are worth that kind of money. I regularly pay AUS$35-45 for Japanese imports, better quality disc, extra tracks and great packaging. Hopefully the new DT will be out in Japan earlier so I can get that one too.

"My Soul > Is Wet" is an AWESOME album... and I haven't heard "boo" from 'em since! > NOW PLAYING: Big Surprise... Mutha's Day Out "My Soul Is Wet"

Ahh, now here's something I can answer pretty definitely. Mutha's Day Out had been doing quite well and had just gotten a song on the MORTAL KOMBAT soundtrack (which BTW is really good) when disaster struck: Mikal, their lead singer, fell in love.

--While on tour in England he and a British girl, a fan, fell in love and they've since gotten married; Mikal left the band and at this point I'm not sure what he's up to (but if he isn't happily married I'll be upset 'cause MDO would have been pretty big right about now). Mikal was by far the oldest in the band (when I first met these guys he was 22 and everyone else was 19, 18, 18 and 17) and their principal songwriter, so when he left that was pretty much it.

Chuck and Jeff (guitar and bass) are still into music and are still playing with various projects in the Little Rock area, when last I called and spoke with Chuck (which was too long ago, really). Both are living in or near Batesville, AR, the ancestral home of Mutha's Day Out. :) We got one rough demo tape from them a while back that was MUCH harder and deathier than MDO, which didn't surprise us since we caught Jeff (the youngster, he was 15 when they were signed) practicing a Kreator guitar lick in their hotel room once while on tour. :)

Brice, their "other" lead singer -- MDO had two guys on vox, one reason why they were kinda neet -- had moved to Fla. to be with his girlfriend but last I heard was planning on moving back to Arkansas, and if so he'd link up with Chuck and Jeff. Rod, their drummer, is also in Batesville at last report but was not playing with Chuck and Jeff, although after the band folded he was jamming with them for a while.

It's really a shame they had to fold the band -- they were just starting to get some good notice (they were HUGE in France, outdrawing Henry Rollins Band when they opened for him) and were on track to do quite well indeed. After the band folded their management told me they were getting numerous calls from industry types just on the strength of their videos and the song on the MK soundtrack, and their sound, a cross between metal and hip-hop (with lots of vocal "trading" back and forth) predated later successful bands by a year or two.

I maintain what appears to be the world's only MDO web page, at www.crl.com/~vanyel/mdo/mdo.html, which explains how we first met them, how cool they were to us, etc. Also describes some of the shows we saw on their tour, including their first arena show in Tampa/St. Pete, which was a helluva drive but well-worth the effort.

So, uh, there ya go. :)

Now that i think about it, doesn't Blues Traveller use the same chord progression in "Hook"? In that case, I guess it DOES bring you back. :)

    You kids. :P

    > Can anyone please please please explain me how do > time signatures work? What do 7/8 or 3/4 mean? > What is the difference between 4/4 and 12/8?

Now it's time to get technical. :)

    Simple Meter:

Simple meter is when the beat unit can be most easily divided into 2 equal parts.

Top number: number of beats per measure Bottom number: beat unit

That would mean that in 4/4, you would count 1-2-3-4 2-2-3-4 3-2-3-4... Or, if you're subdividing the eighth notes, you would count 1-&-2-&-3-&-4-& 2-&-2-&-3-&-4-&...

    Compound meter:

Compound meter is when the beat unit can be most easily divided into 3.

Top number: beats per measure x3 Bottom number: nearest subdivision of the beat

This is where much argument arises, but this is how most music textbooks will define compound meter. In answer to one of the questions, the difference between 12/8 and 4/4 is that 12/8 has four beats divided into three eighth notes each, and 4/4 has four beats divided into two eighth notes each.

    Some common compound meters:

12/8: four beats ber measure; dotted quarter note = one beat 6/4: two beats ber measure; dotted half note = one beat 9/8: three beats per measure; dotted quarter note = one beat 3/8: one beat per measure; dotted quarter note = one beat and variations thereupon.

The disagreements arise in areas of accents. Listen to Surrounded and the part w/ the offbeat wood block and the beginning of the verse immediately following is transcribed in the I&W book as 9/8 <I think>. I disagree. I think this is an example of alternating 4/8 and 5/8 because that is where the accents are. In Voices, also, there is the main riff in the beginning of the song, transcribed in the Awake book as 9/8. Again, I would have transcribed it as alternating 4/8 and 5/8. If I had to do it in 9/8 for some reason <to appease the great Prog God or something> I would have written the time signature this way:

    9/8 (4/8+5/8)

or something to that effect. The reason for my logic is that most musicians will see the 9/8 time signature and think the textbook meter, which is a compound 3. The way the tab books transcribe it is as a simple 9.

Now, before I get flamed to hell, let me just say that I am fully aware that John Petrucci himself edited the I&W and Awake books. I still disagree with him. All you Alanis Morisette fans out there, listen to "Mary Jane" from JLP for an example of true 9/8 <or 9/16 or whatever> time.

    > Take Mixolydian: g a h c d e f g ...

Wait a minute. Isn't h the symbol for Bb in German? There's no Bb in Mixolydian! This would be G Dorian!

    > Or Dorian: d e f g a h c d ...

And this would be D Aeolian!

Now that everyone is thouroughly confused, I'm just kidding. I'm assuming the h is to differentiate between the not B and the flat symbol.

Whoever said that thing about the guitar with the low h string: :D!

    > AND try NOT to be so smart with # and b. It's all in the notes and one > scale...

Actually, once you are familiar with the concept of modes, you can move on to MODAL TRANSPOSITION <ooooooh! amaze your friends!>!

We'll start with C Major. If you use the FIFTH <G> as the tonic and use the key signature of C Major, you'll play in G Mixolydian! Now, let's think Ab major. If you use the FIFTH <Eb> as the tonic and use the key signature of Ab major, you'll play in Eb Mixolydian. See the pattern? Let's say you want to play in B Phrygian. What key signature would you use? Yes! G Major.

Then, you can get into synthesized modes. If you use the characteristic pitches of different modes together, you get a synthesized scale. For example, if I take the #4 of Lydian, and the b7 of Mixolydian, you get the synthesized mode called Lydo-Mixolydian Mode. Or, as I like to say Mix-a-few-of'em Mode. :P
