7/8 means there are seven notes in a measure, and the 8th note gets the beat. So, to count out a 7/8 measure: one, two, three, four, five, six, sev. Then repeat for next measure. You don't want to say sev-en, because it's 2 syllables and you could easily be counting 8/8 (which is the same as 4/4) :)

    >What is the difference between 4/4 and 12/8?

4 notes per measure, quarter (4th) note gets the beat.

12 notes per measure, eighth note gets the beat. One measure of 12/8 can be easily counted by thinking of it as 2 measures of 6/8. That's how I got through "Oh Holy Night" at a Christmas Concert last year as the solo instrument. The version I was playing was in 12/4 time.

Dude, play church music for a few years, man does it help!

Hello, Don't you hate when you get a nice long post ready to send off to the Jam, only to have your browser crash right near the end... Fookin' Netscape... In late August, I will be putting together a web page filled with many things musical and movie related. I would appreciate anyone's input before I get started. The trader list will definitely be on there, as will the SK list info. But aside from that, anyone know what I should put up to avoid some overall redundancy? I'm thinking about creating a referral/link page for all things DT related: i.e., how to get Mike's CDs, how to get the Ytseshirts, where to find memorabilia. Sounds like an idea? I wouldn't have all the info on my page, just the links to finding it. Oh, and by the way, since I have no computer programming background, it'll suck at first. Can you say HTML for Dummies, Stodge? It's official: DT is back at the top of my favorite artist list. With the influx of tape trades, they've been in my tape player in my car non-stop. Just when I thought no one could top Satch... But it's gonna take a lot to knock Sketches of Spain out of my favorite album spot. Got my copy of Mr. Bahr's Razing Arizona yesterday. First thing I noticed: I'll Get Even has a time listing of a little over 3 minutes, but the CD version is over 5. Then I listen to the CD: it's actually She-Wolf! Heheh... The words rokz nadz come to mind. And the version of Sweating Bullets is awesome! Oh, plus all these great reviews make me wish I had paid for Precious Things a lot earlier...:) Mr. Portnoy: <AskMe> What have you been listening to lately? <MikeP> The new DT for about two months now, nonstop. :)

Since I still like a lot of the hard rock bands of the 80's I went out today and got the new Night Ranger cd Neverland. I like this cd after a first listen. I had thought Ratt's Collage was supposed to be out today. Best Buy didn't know anything about it. I looked for the new GC and Best Buy didn't have any...

Got Virtual Songs yesterday. This is the 3cd audience Rush boot. This is great quality for an audience boot. Someone should have shot that guy who screams every so often...

Read in a newsgroup that Jon Oliva sings most of the songs on the new cd. Is this true?

Anyone know the status of the QR tour? I've got 7th row for Saturday.

Carl Sagan wrote "Contact". He believed that extraterrestrial intelligence exists throughout the universe, he was an atheist, and he was an inspiration to many people, just like Jodie Foster's character is in the movie. Zemeckis didn't violate the intent of anything, he followed Sagan's thoughts. (unless the book is different from the movie. I haven't read it).

    >Jodie Foster took the existence of aliens on faith

She believed there was a good PROBABILITY that other life exists outside of the Earth, and she needed evidence to prove it. Unlike Mr. McConaughey's faith. (no religion war please). I thought Contact was one of greatest movies of the decade, a breath of fresh air in a world dominated by copy-cat non-believable action movies.

And Dream Theater should've done the soundtrack!

On to VAUXDVIHL, I read somewhere that Vauxdvihl broke up, any confirmation of this? All I know is that in January they were working on a new album. Australian jammers, help?

I know about 47,000 people will ablige this request, but, hey, I might as well look like I know something about music.

Pedro asked (in JIVE: P-funk axed): > Can anyone please please please explain me how do > time signatures work? What do 7/8 or 3/4 mean? > What is the difference between 4/4 and 12/8?

Technically, the top number is the number of beats per measure, and the bottom number indicates what note is given one beat. For example: 4/4 means 4 beats per measure and a quarter note gets one beat. 5/8 is 5 beats, and eighth note gets one beat.

Since you are asking this, I'll assume the idea of a quarter note is going over your head as well. 4/4 is the standard time sig. Listen to alternative music; that's all they know. :) You'll often hear the snare being hit on the 2nd and 4th beats, the bass on the 1st and 3rd, and eighth notes constantly on the hi-hat. That's the basic rock beat. In one measure, there are 2 bass hits and 2 snare hits. Those are the 4 quarter notes in one 4/4 measure. Eighth notes are half the length, hence the name (or twice as fast).

Putting all this together, there are some equivalencies I'll point out:

    1) two 2/4 measures = one 4/4 measure 2) one 8/8 measure = one 4/4 measure (just counted differently) 3) one 5/8 measure = one 2/4 measure + half a beat (half a quarter note)

    etc.

If you still have questions after digesting this (and other posts, I'm sure) you can email me privately.

What's even cooler is that sometimes he actually gets into it, and you hear goin', "C'mon! yeah!" and hear him him banging on the desk or the microphone.

One of the first times it came on, he was like," Man, this friggin' rules, who is this?" His sidekick Fred then said, "Dream Theater". Howard replies, "Man, these guys kick ass"

He then asked if they had the album, so Fred fished it out...

He proceeded to play the first couple of seconds of most of the album, then proceeded to say "Is there any singing on this thing??" He put the Mirror back on, through most of the intro, then the keyboards came in. He then says, "Man, this sucks, these guys would rock if they got rid of those damn keyboards" Then another song came on and he was like, "Ahhh, these guys suck..........the drummer's real good, but the rest of 'em suck.............."

I guess that's a reaction from people who don't have patience to listen everything through.

I gotta hand it to him, for a 40-some-odd year-old man, he's good some pretty damn good taste in music.........

Mr. Portnoy talks about it a small bit in the interview.... who knows, maybe if call in the show, we can get them on the show, since a few of them are from Long Island, where Howard lives, when the next album is released.....

Personally, I think that Mike and Howard would hit it off pretty well - dunno 'bout the other guys though, probably Derek too......the others are pretty shy

And Robin would probably comment on Mr. LaBrie's cute ass....
