    Hello all,
Drumkit size is,after all, the choice of the player. The bigger is
better is not always right for a particular genre of music. Not that I'm
against it or anything. Don't get me wrong,I love a big kit. But here's
something I tried when I had a big kit just to see how creative I could get.
Take your kit apart and set up just a bass drum and your snare. Play through
some tunes and see how creative you can be with just the snare and bass. Then
start adding the hi-hat and so on until you have the whole kit set back up.
You should be ready to explode by the time you get that last cymbal on the
last stand. Think of it as "Creative Therapy." Look at it another way,If you
are ever thrown into a situation where you have to play on someone else's
smaller kit,you have to be able to be creative no matter what the situation.
    This all IMHO.
Any comments please e-mail me privately.

Of all the magna carta tribute cds I thought Working Man was the best.

In second is the Yes and Genesis which I think are great.

Third would be the Tull tribute which is good.

and last the most boring of the bunch being the Floyd tribute.

heheh......not for nothing, but you're probably in the vast
            minority among the age-impaired :P

I'm going by experience with the old folk around me :P It
seems that with age, many people's taste in music seem to
deteriorate proportional to their hairlines (maybe I should
            write a thesis on that).....

Anyway, your taste in music is very commendable, and I hope
that my taste in music is just as good as yours as I get
"more experienced in time"......and I hope that people can use
you as an example -- that way, this ageism thing can rest

The whole song seems to go along with this idea, to me. As

That makes sense to me, but I have a different interpretation.

I think that the persona of the song (the person singing, if you will) is John's father, who was presumably married for thirty years or so. Lines like "I never bared my emotions" set the song up for me as John Sr. facing his illness as a classic "tough guy" who would rather stay hurt than ask someone else for help. "Won't let them fill me with fatalistic remedies." Maybe he was scared of doctors or hospitals. I never knew my Italian grandfather, but I can speak for my father and myself - we hate hospitals. :)

Then, towards the end, "Do you feel you don't know me anymore," etc. Maybe John's parents were having some trouble during this time (which wouldn't be extremely surprising), so the "Thirty years say we're in this together, so open your eyes" is him calling out to her for help, finally.

"Learning from misery, staring back at dissent, Leaving distrust behind, I'm inspired and content." He allowed himself to get scarred by the act of closing himself in. Now he allows himself to trust other people (maybe his wife, maybe his 30-year-old son, now that I think about it) and is more able to face life.

    That's my guess.

I heard from someone who saw a Portnoy clinic this past year that he was discussing the recent trend of people scaling down their sets, the notion that less is more. He said something like, "Well, the way I see it, more is more!" And I agree. One of the first things that really, really drew me in to DT was the percussion in LSoaD (Yes, I was late. Sue me). I think the more stuff Mike has, the better he's going to play. I also think that most drummers in the world aren't good enough for that. Mike and Neil Peart have *huge* drum kits, but they use everything there. Alex Van Halen has a *huge* drum kit, too, and he's a great drummer, but 5 more cymbals and 4 more toms aren't going to add anything to VH's music.

I can just imagine what John Bonham would say if he could see Mike's drum kit. "You've got to be fuckin' loonie" comes to mind. :) Then again, the smaller kit worked for him, and the bigger kit works for Mike.

It makes sense. She looks like she coud've been about 13 in the Another Day vid back in '92. Add 5 years. Maybe she's just short for her size. Anyway as Bafu would say, "Prime Meat!" :P

I have problems with this. My pinkies are considerably shorter than the rest of my fingers, so I really have trouble soloing with it. The only way I've gotten over it is to practice coming up with other ways to use it. I find if used correctly, it helps counterbalance my left hand really well while playing. It sounds rather stupid, but my pinkies are incredibly short.

Who cares what he'd say after the show...it'd be a chance for millions of listeners to hear MORE DT along with the personalities of DT...plus the fact that MP IS a big Stern fan would help them greatly for the interview...Howard eats that shit BIG TIME when the person who is a guest is a big fan of his...it'd be GREAT for DT!
