    Lurker mode off:

Time to say hello to all my friends in the list, specially to Miguel
"Digitman" Borbolla, hey Joe, I forget to tell you my history about the
cover band "Tom Sawyer & The Trees"....

Last december I was walking from my job to my house (it was a wonderful
night, so I felt like walking), then I was passing this place (Bananas
Ranas), when I heard YYZ playing [the album version over the PA System]
. Strange Tune for a place like this...I better check this out (I
thought)...then in the lobby a sign that reads "Tom Sawyer & The Trees
Tonight"....and with red letters this message: "BARRA LIBRE HASTA LAS
11:00" [ I dunno how to translate this, but it means when you can drink
all you want and just paid the cover ;^) ], so I told to myself, what
the hell, let's see how this band play [ but my main pretext was the
    free beers ].

The usual stage aligment, but it wasn't a trio, it was 4 piece team(
bassist, drums, guitar and a keyboardist) so I was sipping a frozen
glass and the band started the show....they were looking between 16 & 18
years old...first song The spirit of radio...wow! this guy really sings
like Geddy, (I thought), cool guitar and the drums where ok...next was
Red Barchetta...my jaw dropped to the table....for a moment I believed
it was the real thing!!!! same bass-voice, but the drums really kicked
ass. So I was glad to find this joint. Another beer, another song, this
time was The Trees [one of my favorite personal by the way] my
enthusiasm went in increase, each note that they played, seemed that the
boys were playing...Man, what a great way to enjoy friday night that
december... the set list was [not the same order]:

    1. Spirit of Radio
    2. Red Barchetta
    3. The Trees
    4. Manhattan Project
    5. Time Stand Still
    6. Closer To The Heart
    7. La Villa Strangiato [ I still feel goosebumps on that Joe! :) ]
    8. Marathon
    9. Limelight
    10. Turn The Page
    11. Subdivisions ( they invited a older drummer to jam on this one, a
    great one indeed! )

It was right up this moment that the DJ told that the event was
broadcasted live over a local radio station (100.9 Stereo Vida)
bummer!....[ I could have recorded the concert if I have know before ].

I was air drumming all night, the bassist introduce the other members
to the audience and they were Exiting the Stage....Left. The audience
was roaring (btw we were about 400 people in that joint), asking for
more...the band returned for the encore...

    11. YYZ (complete with drum solo).

I have seen other 2 Rush cover bands, but never like this one, I was so
excited, that the moment they finished I went and told the drummer how
great they played... all of them were profesional musicians that play in
local bands here in Obregon Sonora, Mexico, [ and yes..all of this at
    the age of 16 to 19 ].

Man, I hope to see them jam the next time, so I will be able to tell
    you, ok Joe?

By the way, the most beautiful girl in all my 3 favorites mailing lists
( TNMS, YTSEJAM & Freaks) got to be YTSEGIRL!!!

    Jammers

I had to delete my jams dating back to last August...GRRRRRR...

Anyways, I just picked up Angels Cry, Symphony X Divine Wings,
Holy Land and Dickinson's Latest. All nice additions thanx to all of
    your recomendations.

    Back to my point....

Since I can't re-read my old jams to refresh my memory I was hoping
that some of you could recommend or give me descriptions of Angra's
other recordings as well as the same info on Symphony X and
    Stratovarius.

What I would REALLY like to hear is a Band combining the best of
Symphony X and Angra - Angra's songwriting and melodies with X's
    Balls and Chunk and Solos.

( C'mon No fair teasing me I AM on this list cos I'm a Jammer )

Wuz gonna see Fates here in Phoenix at the Mason jar but they

CHANGED THE DATE TO A MONDAY!!!

    can't go gotta work

    Talk about small venues
I have some friends in a band called Meld who play at this venue and
we think it may hold 150 people (if nobody eats b4 the show)
This place is probably smaller than your apartment.
Why is Fates playing these types of venues...very sad....Great Band

Welcome to the music industry. :) I think of it as corporate rock
syndrome: People are pummeled with the same fuckin' songs allllllllll day
and alllllll night long (Hell, I turned my TV on and the same exact video
from the Wallflowers was almost in unison on both Vh1 and MTV), and even
if the general public thinks ill of it at first, they're reminded by the
"trend setters" at MTV that it's cool to listen to this music. Sort of a
delusion that ppl who watch MTV are on the cutting edge of fashion and
information. :P How many of you who turn on yer radios or tv's at all
know the lyrics to "Bitch" by now? The entire song?

My calculated guess is that the industry is run by businesspeople, who
are looking for the widest audiences out there, and in order to appeal to
an audience of any shape/kind/form, your product has to be understandable
to them. So they try and dump the intelligence factor to the lowest
common denominator (to the point of insulting your intelligence) to
appeal to everybody. MTV's a great tool for this, and the major
businesses/corporations see this. If it was up to musicians as to who
got more airplay, we'd be in a radically different world!

It's all a necessary evil really...the "business" half of "music
business." If there's a trend goin' around, the industry's going to ride
    it 200%, because, in summation...

    It's all about money. >:)

But thaz juss my opinion, I could be pickin' my nose under a blue
    jamacian moon.

i totally agree with this analogy. being a fellow 98rock listener, i must
say that even though it is a descent station, every song is 4/4 with the
exception of a few Rush tunes a day. and when most people i know hear DT
they think they screwed up when theyre not using 4/4 timeing, and call it
bad mixing.. heh bad mixing. but people i know who listen to jazz or
classical, hear dream theater and think that they are awesome, and say stuff
like, i didnt know some of the bands out today actually had some talent.
maybe all us MDers should call 98rock and tell them to stop this decline of
    american music =]

    Hello!
I just wanted to post a short little letter begging any of you Boston area
jammers that know of any economy-oriented living space availiable to PLEASE
call me at (315)942-9050 OR email at AWAKE77@aol.com. The computer is at my
parents house, so I only check it like once every 2 weeks. Im in my apartment
before 11 am or after 10:30 pm.
Heres my dilemma: I got screwed on my college tuition assistance (dont we
all!):) to Berklee. (Of all places!) So, Ive been working my butt off to pay
for tuition out of my own pocket. And I came up with the cash. Now, I dont
have a place to live and Berklee dorms are WAY too expensive to consider. Im
supposed to start Sept 1st. I really need some help here. Im like 6 hours
away from Boston so its not like I can just rush down and grab a place, you
know? I dont care where it is, or what it looks like, just as long as I have
a place to sleep and take a shower.
Anyways, thanks for hearing me out. If worst comes to worst, I just stay
in Boonville NY and make sandwiches 70 hours a week for the next 4 months
until the spring semester. Then at least Ill be able to afford the new DT
    album.:) Thanks again...

    On my knees and begging,
    Chris DiGiuseppe

o yea? well im the biggest metalica fan in the world... i have all their
tapes: Enter the sand man, One, and load. and i have a PCP guitar like Kurt
Hammen, and a gibson Exploder like James Hatfeild. im also going to get
Tommy drums like Lars Urich. i love the new stuff, but old metallica is the
best, my favorite tape is one, even though load was my first. i just got the
tape enter the sand man yesterday, it is awesome, except that song misery.

The first "hard" band I ever heard was Anthrax (State of Euphoria). The
second one was Metallica. Upon hearing Metallica for the first time
(Master of Puppets), I innocently blurted out "Sounds like Anthrax." Now,
the more experienced metalheads around me were kind of surprised that I'd
make that kind of connection, because all things considered it didn't (and
doesnt') make much sense. But I said it because of my extremely limited
exposure to those genres of music.

If someone has never heard anything even remotely prog-rockish except for
Rush, and you play them Marillion, or Dream Theater, or Leviathan, or King
Crimson, etc., chances are that person with their limited exposure to prog
is going to say "Sounds like Rush."

Me too! 'Twas all-Marillion day today; played all 8 studio albums (skipped HiE--day's not that long).

How can you tell a Christian computer programmer?

If you tell him to "go to hell," he tells you never to say "go to!"

Then who _do_ they sound like? I can see the comparison (on only one listen, mind you) between Marillion and Signals-era Rush. Older Genesis is the obvious choice, but since Genesis s___ o__, nobody recalls "Genesis, the Progressive Band," just "Genesis, Phil's other Pop Band."

There was a debate along these lines on r.m.p a while ago, and the general thought was that popular music runs in cycles. A new kind of music grabs the public's attention, the first few bands in the genre make it big, a zillion high-school students start bands in their heroes' images, the market becomes saturated with that genre of music, and something new pops up to grab the public's attention. Lather, rinse, repeat. From each group, a few of the best/most popular hang on, so we still have Rush and Yes from the Prog years, Aerosmith from the hair-band era, etc. on the radio and empty-V.

Therefore, guitar rock in the early 70's became prog, which begat punk, to disco, to New Wave, to 'hair bands', to alternative, to grunge. The 'emerging genre' right now seems to be the happier 'adult alternative,' e.g. Wallflowers and Dave Matthews Band. The cycle seems to be about 5 years in the spotlight for each group, allowing for overlap.

Of course, a big part of this is that each genre must be (1) accessible to a large number of people, and (2) suitably different from the previous one. Complex prog, to simple but harsh punk, to simple but smooth new wave, etc.

This is, of course, a _gross_ oversimplification, and ignores the smaller movements (neo-prog) and the overlap between the major ones (punk and disco overlapped, new-wave and hair-metal overlapped, etc.)

Any possibility that it's from H.P. Lovecraft's works? Meshuggah sounds like the sort of thing that would hang around with Cthulhu, Hastur, and Shoggoths. (or however those are spelled.)
