what black album? the enter the sandman album? yes i know who the original
bassist of metalica was it was the dude thats in DC/AC, i cant rembmer if it
was him or if its Slash, from Roses and Guns.. and yes i know who the old
guitarist was it was Dimbag Darryl from Pintora, and before him it was Randy
Roads, until he got shot by a bus driver that got hit by a steamboat. and
that was after he played with black sabbath. what is kill em all? do you

It's worse than that. People don't know who artists *are*, half the time. People today know songs, and that's it. That's why there are so many one-hit wonders today, because no one seems to care *who* is making music, so long as there is some.
I once thought that people today were content to accept mediocrity in art, but it's not even *that* good. People don't give a shit about art. At all. Music, film, literature... people don't care anymore. The prevailing attitude in today's culture seems to be "I don't care if it's good, in an artistic sense, as long as it keeps my attention." In the day of the soundbite, everything has to be loud, flashy, and quick. I watched about five minutes of MTV today, for the first time in I don't know how long. It was nauseating. Women in bikinis on a beach, and some guy ranting monosyllabically in some psuedo-language about Ged knows what... it wasn't about anything. There was no point, no substance... just enough glitz to keep the average 16 year old nailed down.
Well, anyway, at least they'll be the first ones against the wall when the revolution comes. I just hope it comes soon. I'm tired of having to dumb down to be entertained. Damn! Missed "Friends" tonight.

Hi, The problem with most people is that music, although important, doesn't rule their lives. Most of us jammers will put on a CD sit down and listen to it. How many people (I'm talking general public) will actually listen to music. I mean really listen - sit quietly for 70 minutes just nodding their head and occasionally saying things like "Oh wow", "How did he do that" and "oh...this is great...oh". Not many. I put money down that people have come to your house and said "Put on some music" and 30 seconds into the first song start talking to you about work or how your day was, and your just thinking "Shut the fuck up I love this drum fill!". I agree with some of what's been said on this thread: - inundation of basic music - trends giving way @ 5 years - initial bands being remembered, second phase bands being huge, then a bunch of wannabes (but Aerosmith being a hair band? They're a resurrected 70s guitar band IMO) Anyway, I disagree that the bottom is falling out for American music. When you consider what context in which we are discussing this (popular, trend setting music), one must realize that the bottom's always been missing. The "music du jour" has always been most popular because it appeals to the lowest common denomenator of ALL LISTENERS. A great majority of this group has no musical training and places a lower emphasis on music as a part of their lives or as something into which they really dig. "What sounds good to me?" This often means "What is easy to listen to? What requires less thought and more inate feel?" Like it or not, record companies have a good idea of what most people will latch onto easily. Just as McDonald's knows their food ain't great, but people will buy it--buy LOTS of it 'cause it's easy to digest! Poison (though I like 'em better than most anything on the "alt" stations) was one of the top hair/hardrock/metal/glam bands in the late 80s that--at the time--I couldn't figure out how they were considered musicians. Few chords, mindless and cliche'd lyrics, boring hooks and predictable guitar solos. Also poor singing. That's just an example. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels the bands who get the most recog. are hardly the best musicians in any genre. But it has always been like that. The truly great are often overlooked while copycats (Pat Boone, etc.) get the glory. Steve

Vic (?)'s post of the Rush cover band reminds me of the cover band I saw last year at Club Bene in Jersey. It was also a 4-piece band, and not only did the singer sound like Geddy, but he damn near looked like him too.... They were a really great band, and dammit I just forgot the name of them, but they're a very popular Rush cover band (one of the best, people say) around the NorthEast at least.....the name "Moving Pictures" comes to mind, but I'm having brain farts right now and don't think that's it........

Damn straight and, not to sound "holier than thou", it's just unfortunate that a majority of people are morons in the US. Yes, this is a sweeping generalization that doesn't apply to us, since we are SO more sophisticated than everyone else.........but face it, we are the elite minority...Anyway, it's just a shame that our country's people are just plain music idiots, as opposed to "fuckin' idiots" like Bafu :P. Sometimes I honestly wish I could move to Japan for a while, where musical appreciation seems to be pretty-much commonplace......
Anyway, this is a reply posted out of sheer frustration, and in no way represents my true personality or thoughts.......
