    >every song is 4/4 with the
    >exception of a few Rush tunes a day

I hear Jethro Tull's "Living In The Past" from time to time on the radio.
That ain't 4/4 (probably one of the few 'hit singles' that isn't).

    >The 'emerging genre' right now seems to be the happier
    >'adult alternative,' e.g. Wallflowers and Dave Matthews Band.

That would also coincide with that Time (or was it Newsweek?) mag with Jewel
on the cover. Yah, makes sense, dunnit? "Melancholy is out, happy is in!"

    >I think I made my case. If you have only now gotten into Metallica, or
    >any band for that matter, I find it hard to say that you are the biggest

I'll bet you fellows didn't know I was the biggest Dream Theatre fan -- I
even have their first album, "Images & Words". It sounds a little bit like
pussy shit to me, but you have to expect that from a hair-band. Also, I
just love Corn, Panthera, and Megadeath.

    > I watched
    >about five minutes of MTV today, for the first time in I don't know how

Well, if you're not looking to see anything having to do with music, MTV
actually has some (read: a few) good programs. Such as "Oddville MTV", or
that new independent animator program. Speaking of indy animators -- anyone
else ever see one of the Spike & Mike's Animation Festivals? Or, am I the
only one? I saw Wallace & Grommit *years* before they got 'big'! (That
    means I'm cool, right?)

Kinda surprised am I... No takers on that Queensryche ticket?! It's
*second row* -- that's mere inches from the stage! I'll post the 'ad' one
more time before giving the rest of the Internet a crack at it. (That's how
much I like you 'Jammer kids, eh?)

Really? That's quite amusing... Is there any 'story' behind this quote?

I've got a Malmsteen story of my own, actually. Some friends of a guy I
once knew heard there was a YM show at some dive-bar near their house, so
they decided to go. Halfway through the setlist, during the 'Icarus Dream
Suite', the sound cut out on Yngwie's guitar. He got pissed, yanked his
guitar cord from the amp and marched up the center aisle to the soundguy's
table/booth in the back. Some sort of heated discussion went on that ended
with Malmsteen spitting on the guy and hitting him in the head with his
guitar! He then left and refused to finish out the show. (All the
concert-attendees were refunded their money, at least)

I *do* like his music, though... well, aside from the lyrics, of course.
It's just impossible to respect him as a person is all...

    Hi! A few things.

First off, it doesn't look like I'll clean out the inbox
completely before I leave later today for Cali, so I offer my humble
apologies to all still waiting for replies, and I'll get back to them
    ASAP when I return.

I really don't mind when people dub the stuff. If it weren't for
tape trading and so on, I'd never have built up a collection big enough to
start making CDs with. :) And also, the cassette medium is so unbelievably
inferior to CD and DAT, it really doesn't have me worried about losing
potential sales. So go ahead, dub all you want.

The funniest thing about this is, I have had severe ADHD all my
life, and have been generally inattentive to _everything_, and yet still
have no problem focusing on music as long as it's intricate and complex
and well-written... know any bands like that? (grin) The ADHD is actually
a real thorn in my side, because I had been taught "mental exercises" to
pull my focus together long enough to accomplish intensive tasks. And one
interruption while I'm doing a task, and my focus goes right into the
shitter and I have to start all over again. Everyone else in the world
seems so _productive_ compared to me. At least burning CDs doesn't require
    my constant attention.

This is the third time I'll ask for information about Opeth on
this list. I got no responses from the other two. I'd really like if I

            I've heard that they do a great black/doom/death (I don't know)
metal with interludes of acoustic guitars and that they have long songs
(20 minutes or so). I'd really like to know how they sound.

Thank you for any information, Roger...

I'm looking for the cheapest place to get good mail order CD's, unfortunately, I never write down too many of the places recommended here on the jam. I'm looking for a place that is pretty cheap (cheaper than Knights of the Round), and a bit faster than they are, if that is possible(2-6 weeks). Please email me with this, that would be awesome...

I've been tryin' to get my ass into CalArts in Valencia CA, and everytime I visit, there's some sort of scholarship contest bein' offered to the artists out there...but it should be somebody other than MTV doing this. I say MTV adopts the label POPTV, and some musicians get the REAL endorses like Pearl, Tama, Ibanez, Marshall, Fender, Ernie Ball, etc. and start a REAL MTV.

Regarding that indie animation program, were ya referrin' to Liquid Television? Reply to that queshun privately please. :)

    Hi folks,

Hey, my dad is pretty cool as well...he was listening to ACOS at one point and asked me "How long is this song" and I said 20 minutes, he made me turn it off :( (I know, burn he must hehe) but at least he loves Maiden (quite serious on that one), doesn't mind some megadeth either but he's happy with his Eagles and his Beatles.

As for this entire deth starting their tour and all that shit...I went to that chat yesterday, (I woulda been in Vegas BUT) and it was incredibly lame. It doesn't take a brain child to run a soundboard. Instead of shelling out what, maybe 100$ extra to rent a soundboard, the band could have actually been AUDIBLE for people listening over the net. They couldn't have taken a feed from the soundboard and piped it through the computer. That's sad. 2 of the band members were late, no one knew what was going on and the people setting things up were having a ton of trouble. I'm almost glad I missed the event now. Hell, that big suprise that was being talked about, WHAT suprise?

As for this Miss Megadeth Arizona thing, whatever it is. 2nd annual? Uhm, there is no 2nd annual, try the first. Gee, just like everyone thinking that this is the bands 8th album when it's their 7th.

I think it's time I jumped in on this thread... I've always felt that the true musician died a very un-noble death around the time such artists as Nirvana and Bush made their climb to the top of the charts. All of a sudden, it was uncool to solo, it was uncool to be talented as a guitarist, drummer, bassist, and singer (and totally uncool to be a keyboardist). What was in, instead was a specific look ((the flannel grunge look) although a 'look' was in in the 80's also...just a different one)), a specific style of singing, and a specific style of play. The last two of these points is what I will focus on. I find it very hard to come to grips with the amount of fame and fortune that rock musicians aquire nowadays. The ceiling of talent back in the eighties was much higher. To top that off, the lowest common denominator of talent was much higher also. Look at Singers like David Coverdale. All of you know him from Whitesnake. Here is a man, that can sing with as much range as LaBrie, the Power of Geoff Tate, and the raspiness of Sammy Hagar, yet since He was involved with Whitesnake, yet he was in one of the most successful bands in the 80's. I do not believe there is a singer, within pop music today, that can even come close. (Obviously there are singers in Progressive Music that do, and even surpase him, but we all know that) Now for all those interested in debating this point, keep in mind, that given Coverdale's singing ability, and given (let's say) the singer from Oasis's ability, who would be able to sing the other's style. I doubt very seriously, that the singer from Oasis, Bush, Wallflowers, input_alternarock_singer_here can ever sing Still Of The Night. Yet, I'd also be willing to bet that Coverdale can cover the bases on a Nirvana song with little or no difficulty. The main thing is, why would he want to?

Guitarist's bring a more personal point into this, for me, since I am a guitarist. I cringe everytime I listen to the radio nowadays. Since Kurt created Buck-Shot-Soup with the frontal lobe of his very small brain, we have been forced to listen to guitarist's that can't develop anything more than power chords, and can't solo to save their own life. This is not opinion, it's plain fact. If a guitarist knows little more than moving power chords up and down the neck of his guitar, or simply knows nothing more than the Pentatonic Minor to select notes to play a solo from, he is simply not as talented a guitarist as most if not everyone from the Eighties. It's like reading a book by Tom Clancy and then being forced to read stuff from a poor 4th grade level writer. Many people questioned CC Deville's musical ability, years back. But I tend to think he was an insightful, catchy riff writer. Even more so, now that I am forced to listen to (If I put on the radio) pure dogshit like Bush. Put it this way, If CC was able to write and solo in several different modes, with major and minor keys, and he was selling records with Poison now, along with all the shit our Music Business has to offer, I would say he's the best guitarist we've got to choose from.

I can't ever bring myself to say that the musician's of the 80's were bad...cause I truely appreciate how good we had it, till the Music Business and A&R departments were overrun with kids that don't know their ass from their elbow( musically, and maybe a little more than that too!).

Hey now! Thanks for the lyrics, monkeysack, but this is getting into the realm of the inane (where Metallica dwells)... less Metallica content, puh leeze

Disagreed. Asshole :) (I dunno, felt like being mean to E-Man.:)

I looked it up in www.m-w.com and what do you know! That IS the real definition!

My dad loves Jerry Douglas (amazing dobro player... truly stupifying) Tony Rice, Acoustic Alchemy... Leo Kottke... he's just a HUGE folk/bluegrass/acoustic guitar and mandolin fan. He has pretty darn good taste in it, too, because even I dig it, and I hate country.

I'm sorry... this post was just SCREAMING Freud. I had to do it. :)

Actually, I think it was so that us people with 7 strings could laugh at you people with your normal guitars, trying to tune down to B, and watching those strings flap around... it's a riot. :) Do I hear Dennis Leary singing? :)

I was wondering... what does 3D equal? What is the value of D?

Yes. They were touring the Bermuda cruise circuit as a lounge act, and have mysteriously vanished. I am heading an investigation to get some answers... but you can't handle the truth.

Everyone re read that post. That might help people who can't help but to complain about Band X being so popular when DT is not making millions. Steve really hit the Neil on the drum head Lastly: Guitarists, I have a dream.

I want to create a web page where we will all be able to to and deposit the majical formulae to our searing tones and ripping lead sounds. That's right, I'm gonna put up a web page for guitar amp/preamp/rackmount settings. Then I'm gonna want you folks to hop on by there, and fill in your info. For example:

Name: Billy Bob Unit: Sucktron Lizardbreath PreAmp Settings: Distortion: 11.0, Treble 11.0, Mid -11.0, Bass -11.0, Level 11.0, Compressor 6.0 etc...

I figure this could lead to a number of cool settings that no one would have thunk up on their own, and might be a cool resourse to have on the web! I'll give a URL soon... keep your eyes peeled, and your glasses so you have them. (Jerky!)
