I still have RealAudio files for several of Mike's drum clinic songs,
including
"You or Me". The clip that I have of this song only about 60 seconds
starting
out with Mike explaining how the song is shorter, with vocals, and is more
straight forward. He also mentions how this song was more group oriented,
where the group as a whole is what was really important. The song began
with a sample similar to the beginning of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here"
(i.e. radio tuning to different channels) leading into a cool (dare I say
it?) techno
type keyboard lick by Derik, soon followed by John P. cranking it out with
much
wah abuse. My clip ends right as James was starting to sing. From the
short
bit that I heard, the song rocked.
Now remember, This was recorded last fall, and Mike was just using a DAT
demo
that they had recently put together. I guess the guy with the new single
(sorry, I can't remember his name) is the only one who knows how much
it has mutated since last October.
So far, I've only been dissapointed in one new song that I've heard (Take
Away
My Pain). And that one is only because of the severely AOR chorus, the
lyrics are
moving, and the song is otherwise quite good. I'm really looking forward to
September to hear the songs as they were meant to be heard.

Holy shit!!! I can't believe that they got back together! Was it the same lineup as the album? I remember Scott and Charlie from Anthrax, but I can't remember who else was in that band. Are they doing anything new, or just killing time before the next Anthrax record?
And Exodus in the same day. That's amazing. Now I have to dig up that old mix tape someone gave me like, ten years ago, that has "Toxic Waltz" and all those other great tunes from bands like them on it. Who was it that covered "Low Rider"? I remember that being on the same mix tape.

Styx is a late 70's-80's rock band. Personally, I like 'em a lot. Went to their concert, but if you're just starting to listen to Styx I'd recommend Greatest Hits One or The Grand Illusion. =)

I doubt seriously they'll be releasing a live version of Quadrophenia, although I agree, it would kick serious ass. I went to the concert here in St. Louis where they performed it and it blew me away... I doubt there'll be one because Pete was plugging the remastered version of the album. Oh well. I'd better be content with my copy of the movie for now.

Yesterday,I went to a small clubhouse.There were local bands playing there and the addmission was free so I thought:"What the heck?"I really didnīt care for the first two bands,but when Damnatur hit the stage my jaw dropped to the floor.Their music is an excellent mix of death metal and prog.They played 45 minutes straight,and I didnīt hear any mistakes from any of the band members.And their music was complicated.And those guys were 16-17 years old!Has anyone else heard of a band mixing death metal and prog?

OY...it's 3:40 'n I JUST got back into my house after droppin' Vince off. To all that were there 'n recognized our humungous Dream Theater fan crowd (i.e., the crowd wearing exclusively DT t's) it was a blast meeting you all! Hell, this entire night's been awesome!
Okay, for all ya Fates fans out there, I'll get to tha juicy part first: They were ON THE MARK. Very tight, very present, and that drummer... *boggle* Whoa...I'm sorry, I'd have to inject something into my body to play like that! He was AWESOME! After playing the full hour's worth of A Pleasant Shade of Grey, they left the stage,and returned for two encores. I'm not the biggest Fates fan in the world (far from it, actually) but I believe the encore material was from Parallels 'n another album...somebody else post the exact songs.
I myself was enjoying the whole atmosphere. As shitty as the Mason Jar is, it was fun being around a bunch of Green Day-hating, Dream Theater-loving Fates freaks, rockin' away to prog rock all night long. I think we finally left the club @ 1 am. I made a mental note tho: next time I go to a prog rock concert, I'm bringin' some Icy Hot for the legs...oof they're sore!
I still think the setup for the under-age crowd SUCKS. We were the ones makin' the most noise, that strip of kiddies lined up next to the bathrooms. The first band we saw was VERY impressive, Critical Mass. We actually got to talk to the drummer (huge Portnoy/Peart fan, and the influences showed) and the guitarist (ex-co-worker of Uncle Dave) and gave them our numbers 'n addresses for thier snail-mailing lists. It's too bad that there's already an established ska band by that name...this band could severely maul any ska band in a talent contest. Anvil Chorus was a pretty good band, but they lacked the balls 'n chunk that I like in my fave music...the singer had pipes though! If only I could sing like that....and I already summed up Fates: WOW!
Oh, and the trips to Hooters and Guitar Center were great too! There's nothin' like seeing a crowd of 6 or 7 people wearing Dream Theater shirts (and a Savatage shirt) roaming a Guitar Center warehouse! I think we scared that Marilyn Manson fan out of the building....
Heh...now THAT'S a group of rockers with good taste!

I just recieved the latest issue of "A Show of Fans" - a very good RUSH fanzine - and it contains an interview with Mike Portnoy! Seem that he was the "creative consultant" on the RUSH tribute album "Working Man", as well as playing on many of the tracks. The interview was a bit dated - at that time DT had not done the mini-European tour or entered the studio to begin work on FII, but it was still great.
Get this - MP said that his first choice for an opening act on their upcoming tour is SPOCKS'S BEARD! Wouldn't that just rule! They never have made it to Texas (to my knowledge), so this would be my first chance to see them :)
Let's hope this works out!

Hi all
I know there are some people on the jam who like Skyclad, Loreena McKennitt, Jethro Tull and some who may even know the old English band Gryphon. I'm aiming this album review and recommendation primarily at these people, but it's also for everybody who likes to listen to something other than just prog and metal.
Tri Yann - En Concert
As the name of the album suggests, this is a live album, and one of the best I've ever heard. But before I give you the review, I'll explain a bit about this band, because I assume most of you will never have heard of them. They come from Brittany in France, and formed way back in 1968. The three original members were all called Jean, pronounced Yann in the Breton dialect, hence the name. They originally played traditional folk music with a few of their own songs. Over the years they built up a tremendous following, and they slowly expanded musically and in size, so that they now also use electrical instruments and now have seven members (including another called Jean). They make extensive use of traditional instruments, including Breton bagpipes, crumhorns, flutes and whistles, harps, dulcimers and violins. OK, the album. Imagine somebody throws a lit match into a big box of mixed fireworks - that is what this album is like. It pops and crackles and sparkles with erratic brilliance, sometimes there are only little puffs of smoke (the ballads, often featuring excellent vocal harmonies), and then suddenly all hell breaks loose with a rocking base line, chunky guitars and violins in their version of the Irish classic 'Brian Boru'. Weird instruments weave their way in and out of this wonderful sonic tapestry, making you wonder what the hell these guys are playing. All of the tracks were recorded in Brittany and the audience, of course, makes a huge contribution to the great atmosphere on the album. Check out the song 'Kan Ar Kann' for a perfect example of how to combine traditional celtic folk music with rock. I fear this album will be spending a lot of time in one of my CD players in the next couple of weeks (assuming my girlfriend doesn't steal it). There can only be one rating for a CD that is this good and this much fun. 10/10
I first heard Tri Yann when I was on holiday in Brittany about 10 years ago, and I've been a fan ever since. I haven't seen them live yet, but rumour has it that they will be touring Germany next year. Anybody else fancy coming? We've played with Four before, and while they're pretty cool people, as a band they drive me nuts. It really sucks that the radio stations don't know enough about QR to even match up an opener (Tripping On Rats was the second choice - even they would have been a better fit!) Since we're a Power/prog metal band, we prolly would've fit pretty well, but I would have died from shock if we were actually picked - after all, we're not _cool_. Oh well, it's not like we don't get our fair share of good shows (witness the Fates show next week). It _would_ have been really cool to play on that big of a stage, though...
Is there going to be any kind of 'jam pre - show for Fates? If it's early enough, maybe I can make it - we have to have all of our gear in by 5:00, and I probably won't have anything to do before 9:00 or so...

Have to disagree here. I have a vintage Morley wah-fuzz from the 70's and the wah is still incredible. The fuzz doesn't work too well cause of my guitar's output though. I had a Crybaby, returned it. Had a Vox, returned it. But that Morley still rocks my nadz. One down side is that there's no battery power, only AC.
