WHY? Because I said I don't like being called an American? Well seeing as
you ARE an American, I guess you've never had that problem. You don't have
to correct people when you're visiting foreign countries and they assume
you're American. You also don't have to worry about the US eating away at
your country's culture.
This is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. Talk about
paranoia. I never intended to start a war here, I was simply correcting
the poster (who was presumably a European and unaware of the fact Canadians
don't like to be lumped in with Americans), like about a dozen other people
did.
And BTW, if I'm supposedly "the only one", how do you explain the fact that
you are the center of this thread now, and were in the center of it the
last time it was brought up? I would suggest that if anyone seems intent
on starting country wars here, it's YOU, because you're the one who's
always attacking people. This was a thread about the two different
connotations of the word "American". YOU'RE the one who turned it into a
country war by absurdly suggesting that's what my message was about.

Hate to break it to you, but Mexico is made up of states, too.
As a matter of fact, their official name is the United States of Mexico.
So, by your logic, Mexicans would in practice be known as "Americans," too.
In my personal opinion, it is unfortunate that the US appropriated the
generic (where have I heard that word before?) term "American" and
made it apply only to its citizens. I guess might makes right, but I
sure can see where it would tick off some lonely Chileans pissing on
each other to keep warm down in Punta Arenas.

Tho' I'm not gonna quote that entire chapter in Ytsejam history, I must reply. In the last bout of what you term "JLB Ragging" I said I bleeved that the true indicator of any good musician (or vocalist if you prefer) is his live performances. I love JLB's album work, but, as I said in that last thread a couple of weeks ago, from the boots I have alot of his shows aren't up to the standard I set for a professional vocalist. I fought _hard_ supporting LaBrie over Tate in the queensryche newsgroup, but as I collect more tapes I've found I really can't do that anymore. Someone mentioned the Home for the Holidays tour. Listen to the entire El-N-Gee show (not just the parts on Bahr's TDoW), for example, and you'll see what I'm getting at. Under a Glass Moon, just the second song in the show, was atrocious. Surrounded wasn't quite as bad, but still wasn't what most would consider good (IMO). He was supposedly perfectly healthy for these shows, and there were only 3 or 4 of them. I would have hoped he would have been a bit better than what he was. I don't know if he's lost it at all, but I haven't heard a REALLY good show from James since Milan in Novemember of '93, where (IMO) he gave the best show of his career with DT. As for #8 and #9 on your list, you really need to think things through before sending them. Apparently, according to what I understand from your message, critics actually have to be professional vocalists in order to criticize LaBrie. This list is for DT discussion, not for fawning all over them and being able to see no wrong. LaBrie sometimes has problems live. If you say otherwise you're 1) not familiar with their material or 2) just plain wrong. The Ronnie Scott's portion of ACOS doesn't count either, with the re-done vocals. As for the comment about the band "not having any idea they were being recorded" on bootlegs - surely you see how horrible a point that is. If they only try to give a good performance when they know they're being recorded I'd lose a whole lotta respect for them. But I know they don't feel that way, so your point is completely off base. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I respect yours as I'm a big LaBrie fan as well, but please try to keep the hits against other members and the really assinine comments to yourself. Hello all from sunny southern California... I have been way too busy to write as much as I would like and God knows I have way too many back Jams to go through but I would like to say a few things. Firstly, I thought I was going to be screwed coming back down here from Berkeley on the music front. Up there you can find almost anything you want used, aka cheap. I thought I was going to be coming back to the high priced world of LA where the cheapest buy I was going to find was at Best Buy. Well I was wrong. I think I am going to be dropping by my friendly neighborhood Warehouse quite often... they have a huge used selection for dirt cheap. I didn't have the money today, but as soon as I do I am going to pick up a $4.99 copy of SG Carved In Stone. And I thought I was screwed... Now I need to see if they have any Marillion, which brings me to my next point... A long long time ago in a galaxy far far away I had a friend named Steve who turned me on to this one band, I think it was called something like Nightmare Cinema, no... oh yeah Dream Theater. But all kidding aside, this is the guy who got me into Prog (and Steve if you are reading this, you are the man and thanks for everything!). But he also gave me a tape copy of the second CD of Marillion's The Thieving Magpie. I thought it was pretty cool, but nothing incredible. I have rediscovered this jewel and I think I may soon wear the tape heads out with it. This stuff is incredible and the vocals are amazing! So I am planning on both looking for a used version of The Thieving Magpie, Grasping At Straws, and Misplaced Childhood (this one especially). And finally onto something of an offbeat note -> the Dark Side/ Wizard of Oz connection. As far as I know there is something to this rumor. A huge group of friends of mine did this one night and scared the shit out of themselves because of how true it was. The part in "Us And Them" with the lyrics "...black, and blue..." has amaziingly perfect timing to two shots of the wicked witch (wearing black) and Dorothy (wearing blue). But I heard you start it after the second roar... oh well... Back to you regularly scheduled Ytsejam.
