    I'll grab this one. Pangaea is a side project by those two guys who make up Deep Forest. If you're not familiar with Deep Forest, the music is basically manipulated African Pygmie samples set to dance beats. Very cool. Pangaea is very similar, but not quite as "dancy". Good stuff.

    Haha! I don't think anyone could be that stupid to make that trade! I myself haven't seen LITS available anywhere, so I had to settle for the Milan 93 bootleg (which BTW is the same exact show put out by a different company). If you are interested, email me, because I can give you the name of the guy I got mine from, seeing as how this bootleg is *much* harder to find than the Lie single.

    Hey all, Been quite some time since I've posted, but I figured now's as good a time as any - I getting close to caught up on my Jams so hopefully I won't be too far off the mark.

    First of all, I still see lingering coments about No Doubt. Dunno if it was mentioned (probably was, but just in case...) I happened to read in a Rolling Stone issue that their guitarist (forget his name) was a metal head when he joined the band and that he used to play Rush instrumentals back in highschool. If anyone's got seats close to the stage at one of their upcoming shows, they outta yell to him to play a Rush tune!

    I'm sure some people have begun to pick up the Rush remasters - now while the sound is a considerable upgrade (save for the idiot who mastered Hemispheres - still has that gap in the song!), I was kinda disappointed in the packaging - seems half-assed to me - I mean, yeah the booklets are now true to the original albums, but all the art (including lyric sheets) are shrunk down. I don't think I could read the lyrics to COS even if I had a magnifying glass!! And even the cover art isn't as good as it could be - I have a Japanese copy of FBN and the art on it is more detailed (and I believe) closer in color to the way it should be, which brings me to my question: has Japan released remasters (hopefully with better artwork than the US remasters)? Keiji or anyone can ya help me out?

    I also saw the post about Angra boots which aroused my curiosity: are any of the live boots soundboards?? Any replies private or on here would be most appreciated. Also where is the best place to get Angra boots??

    Lastly, I've been thinking of getting a Paradise Lost CD, but I'm not sure. I'm a huge fan of Rush, DT and Queensryche (except HitNF) and also really love Angra and Threshold, Stratovarius, some Symphony X, old Metallica, Megadeth, some Blind Guardian, some Gamma Ray, some Fates. I hate death and black metal and satanic lyrics. Is Paradise Lost for me and if so, which CD?

    Oh and DTC - what is Metropolis II - will it be on the next album? JUST KIDDING!!! :) :) :) :) :) (Sorry couldn't resist)!

    Hey, I stumbled upon an old issue of Guitar World earlier tonight as I was cleaning out an old box. It's from November '94 and it's got Prince on the cover. Anyways, on the inside is a great interview with John Petrucci and John Myung, and Petrucci's guitar tech at the time explains the main sounds used on "Awake". There's a diagram of all the stuff he uses, and this guitar tech also decided to let us in on Petrucci's actual EQ settings and such on the Mesa/Boogie TriAxis for his three basic tones that all of his tones are based off of. Here is exactly what's written:

    CLEAN:

    Preamp mode = Rhythm 1 Yellow Gain = 6 Treble = 6.5 Middle = 3.5 Bass = 3 Lead 1 Drive = 0 Lead 2 Drive = 0 Master = 5.5 Presence = 8 Dynamic Voice = 7 Power amps (Mesa Boogie 2:90 power amp) set on Deep and Modern

    MAIN CRUNCH:

    Preamp mode = Lead 1 Red Gain = 6 Treble = 6.0 Middle = 5.0 Bass = 4.5 Lead 1 Drive = 4.5 Lead 2 Drive = 0 Master = 4.0 Presence = 6.5 Power amps (Mesa Boogie 2:90 power amp) set on Deep and Modern

    LEAD:

    Now, there's also a MAJOR guitar tone breakthrough in this article, for me. Petrucci's tech says that on the rhythm crunch sounds, Petrucci uses a delay at 25 milliseconds. I thought about this and decided to give it a try on my preamp (Rocktron Chameleon). WOW!! This just improved my guitar tone by about 10 fold. I had some problems with my tone up 'till now, it was awesome, but it was missing something. This adjustment fixed the problem, it made my already great sound into the FAT guitar sound I've been looking for (ala DT, Metallica, Megadeth, Savatage, etc.). If ya don't know (which I didn't until I learned from Hector Crisantes), most guitarists put multiple guitar tracks down for their rhythm sound. Apparently this is because each time you play the riffs, you play **slightly** differently than before, and this adds to the overall "crunchyness". Anyway, this 25 ms delay sound can help accomplish the same type of effect, only on a smaller scale. Actually, on some presets I had to turn my gain down a touch because the effect overdrove things a bit too much and put too much gain in there :) I also found out that if you turn the delay volume up too much, it choruses. I have my delay tones set at a volume of -5 on a scale of -15 to +15, and it sounds great.

    Here's my contribution to the Alanis thread...

    If you compare DT and Alanis (they're only examples) the difference is that DT work a lot while writing the songs and put all their feelings in the composition. And they try to play them as exactly as possible during recording- and live sessions. Alanis ((and Glen Ballard)) on the other hand writes simple songs and puts her feelings in it while performing it. I'm not saying that DT is some robot without feelings after the songs are written, but there isn't much room for improvisation. Alanis hasn't got any strict borders for her music on stage so even if the songs are halfbad she can make them good just by using her charisma and voice. It wouldn't sound very good if JP started improvising during "the third dance". All the feelings in that song were put there when it was in the writing process.

    One method isn't better/worse than the other, it's just different aproaches.

    I haven't seen either live (except for videos) so If I'm wrong feel free to correct me. Who knows, maybe Metropolis is nothing but a jam that changes from night to night... :)

    I'd recommend any of the following (in no particular order):

    "In a Glass House" (hard to find, title track is one of my favorites)

    "Octopus" (more of a hard rock edge to this album)

    "Free Hand" (considered to have some of the more accesible tunes. contains a song with 5-part a capella madness, and a sample of the first video game ever. the name of the game is left as an exercise :)

    Complex time signatures abound in any of them, though.

    I saw Queen in '77 when "News of the World" came out (the one with the Dominoes'/Football Stadium Theme Song -> We Will Rock You :). Although I had already suspected it, the live show confirmed it: Brian May *IS* Queen. Yeah, Freddie was the frontman, yeah who can forget Freddie playing keyboards on Bohemian. Brian's sound was so unique and innovative at the time. He stole the show for me. I'd bet Vai and Satch listened to him when they were young-uns :)
