Hey dudes
<
<ok, so i'm browsing the syn-phonic catalog and realize that Gentle Giant is
listed as an influence or a "this band sounds like" for over 1/2 the damn
bands in the catalog.
so i'm thinking perhaps i should check them out. does anyone have any
recommendations on which album to start off with? i'm big on complex
arrangements and funky rhythms, time sigs, etc...
thankya
-Andre>
I have at this time 4 cds from gentle Giant. But I have the remaining on
tape or LP.
I ' d suggest you to buy:
*In a Glass House.
Playing the fool (which is a live album, the best ever recorded imo)
Power and Glory
Octopus
Free Hands
Gentle Giant's way to compose is unique, because they first wrote the scores,
and after they added some grooves and solos to the songs. Vocals, drums,
bass, guitars are great, but they also play in the most of their albuns
a lot of instruments like sax, flutes, piano, etc. And there are some
vocal pieces when the five members of the band really sing. And of course they
mix hard rock, classic(baroque, renaissance, etc), jazz.
And u can be sure about the complex arrangements.
But, Derek Shulman (sax/vocals/etc) (take a look at images and words inside
cover) is
a big (really a big , a big boss there)of east "evil "west label.
Just remember DT petition.

I just got a copy of the new Ibanez newsletter. It is pretty lame
except for the fact that it has an article with JP telling how to play the
really fast quintuplet part in Erotomania. I have had trouble with that
song forever but once I saw it the way he actually plays it with an
explanation it has become much easier to tackle. I don't know where the
newsletter is available, I got mine in the mail, but if you can find it, I
am sure it will help a lot in learning Erotomania.
See ya,

I was searching the internet a while back and I came across a page which
not only has Symphony X, but also bands like Vauxdvihl, Crimson Glory,
Psychotic Waltz, Angra, Stratovarious, Conception, Divine Regale, and
Clockwork to name a few. Definitely check this page out. Because of
these samples I am now in debt! :) But that is a good thing. The URL

Hope you guys (and gals) find this of help. Happy listening.

the show on the 13th from Phoenix is going to be broadcast live on over 100
radio stations around the country too, so people might wanna find out if one
in their area is gonna do that... if not, its also being broadcast over the
web in realaudio at Megadeth, AZ (http://www.hollywoodandvine.com/megadeth)

Megadeth actually played that at a few shows towards the end of their last

Ok, LISTEN UP!
I head over to Strawberries at lunch (you think I'm gonna tell you
Boston jammers which one, you're trippin :)
Buster, CHECK YOUR E-MAIL :)
First the bad news:
Awake in the bargain bin for $7.99 Mutha fuckahs waited till I bought it
for 14 then dropped the last one. I head over to the DT slot in the
rock/R&B section (don't go there :). No discs in the slot, only a
plastic card with something in magic marker scribbled on it :)
Now the GREAT news:
The scribblings said NEW RELEASE ARRIVING IN JULY!!!!!!!!
Release of what, though? :)
New album? Live remnants? Muffin remnants? DT covering 3rd
generation copies of tapes of Jim Colberg copies of Mike Bahr boots of
DT covering other bands?
Ok, rumor heads, go nuts :)
And those complaining about not enough DTC, go find another corner to
cry in, please! It's getting as old as I am (for the math challenged,
that's old :)

Jon

I would recommend getting Draconian Times by PL. Some of their older stuff has
more deathish growling vocals you wouldn't like if you hate death metal, but
Draconian Times has clean vocals, closer to James Hetfield than Max Cavalera.

Hey all,
Just wanted to tell you about/clear up a few things....
First, I saw something really cool in Wal-Mart of all places the other
day. First, I saw the new Fates Warning album, APSoG. I was really
suprised. It was the only album they had by them, but it was cool in
the least. Second, Wal-Mart carries not just the current albums by
Rush, but all of the back albums as well. They also had ACoS in stock,
with a special divider marked "Dream Theater" I was psyched that a super
chain store would have so much prog. music.
Question? Has anyone heard the new Faith No More album? Is it out yet?
I heard the first single/video on Mtv last week on 120 minutes. It is
really cool. I really like Faith No More, their music is really fun.
Lastly, a guy name Steve sent me an e mail complaining about my post in
jam #2609. He called me prejudiced and hinted that I was raised as a
Beaver Cleaver. I want to clear something up (Steve) I am far from
both. I hate 99.9% of rap. The lyrics show ignorance toward the
English language. In the wake of such controversial subjects as Ebonics
classes at LA schools, I thought it was quite interesting and humerous
to post such an uneducated and fun post, I thought I would share. In
the future Steve, take humor for what it's worth, don't send me a letter
complaining about it.
I promise next time that when I have something to share about DT I
will post it... Lata, J

My buddy Tony and I placed a request at Strawberries for the Lie
Single. Much to our suprise, the import supply company has gone under
and the new company that they deal with doesn't deal with any
"underground" bands. Not that I am saying Dream Theater is
"underground" I am saying that Dream Theater is not as popular as say,
Rush or Aerosmith (with the general listening public)
Anyways, Does anyone know where I can order it? I would be quite
apreciative. Thanks, J

Even, believe me I was blown away when she got the bar to put Dream Theater
on the jukebox for me, but check out som of the other stuff they have
on it!:
Ozzy, Judas Priest, Metallica, Joe Satriani, Queensryche, Bon Jovi,
REO Speedwagon, Rush Chronicles!, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains,
Dave Matthews Band, SRV, and whole shitload more stuff...excellent
jukebox for any bar around here...not common. Plus they have a bunch
of classic rock and a bunch of new radio stuff (Jewel, etc..) as well.
But they have achieved complete coolness with the latest addition,
Images and Words - Dream Theater! I've already had 3 people go
"holy shit!! I have to get this!! who is this??!!" during my
favorite "Under A Glass Moon".
SPECIAL THANKS go out to jammer Jon Parmet for finding the Rick Deringer
CD for me. The guy actually went out and bought the thing before I
even had a chance to respond to him! I don't have anything cool to
send Jon, so I'll pay him extra for the CD and give him space on my web
server for his own homepage. THANKS JON!

This is a late 70's band, and yep they do sound a lot like Gentle Giant. I listened to this over a friend's house. The musicians are good, but the songs are really wacky and it has that 70's vintage sound. Get this only if you are a big GG fan.

He is now one of my absolute fav drummers and I >wonder if there is more recorded material with him (there has to be). Manu Katche is indeed a very good drummer. He has a very special style that can easily be recognised, also by non-drummers. In my eyes he brought back the groove to rockmusic. He played with a lot of people. Here is a small list of records where he plays:
His own Album - its about time Tori Amos - Boys for Pele Pino Daniele - Non calpestrare... Peter Gabriel - So, Us, Secret World CD, (last two live Videos) Youssou N’Dour - the lion Simple Minds - Street fighting years Sting - Nothing like the sun, soul cages Tears for Fears - The seeds of love Jan Gabareck - 12 Moons, Visible World, I took up the runes, Ragas + Sagas
Especially on stage Katche has always strong performances. The most experimental he plays on the Jan Gabareck albums (Jazz). I saw Gabareck and Katche in 93. Man this was really an experience. (By the way, if somebody has some live stuff, I would be really interested). For my own drumming he contributed some things, that MP isn’t able to give me, I’m afraid that you have to be a drummer to understand ;-) For more details I found a good Homepage about Manu Katche: http://www.xs4all.nl/ jaschong/2-_dicographie.html
