    Hey there,

I was wondering... So many people talking 'bout the new Megadeth, is it
already out? (Sorry, I've been "off-line" from the world lately =) ). I
was thinking about buying some stuff, that'd be a good one.

    Hey there,

I've been reading these messages about Eternity-X, and the bad press they've been getting on the jam. I've been silent, up to this point. I've gotten into arguments about them on #ytsejam, but I must speak my peace here. I don't intend to ruffle feathers, but if that's what happens.. c'est la vie. First of all, let me state my opinion on the rap question on the Eternity-X survey. I find it arrogant and self-righteous that people feel that they deserve to express their opinions of music (on the Jam, on IRC, whatever), but when a band, or band member, expresses their opinion, they are bashed. I understand that some of you will say that that is "unprofessional", but the fact is EVERYONE is entitled to their own opinion. Yngwie Malmsteen is a very vocal person, with a huge ego and wiseass mouth. To quote him- "I know all there is to know about music theory." Yet thousands of people LOVE him, or his music. If you don't listen to a band's music because of the views of the members, more power to you- don't listen to them and move on. Secondly, subtlerage had a (very) bad experience with Keith. You two didn't get off on the right foot, to say the very least. Some people just do NOT get along, and that is a fact of life. The best thing to do is to ignore each other and move on. Speaking from my own experiences, Keith is one of the nicest people I have ever met. He is very quick in replying to all e-mails I've sent him and friends of mine have sent him, he is very passionate about his music, and most of all- he stands by his fans, no matter what. He puts so much into the band and into the fans because of his love for it all. To show this, here are some quotes from e-mail I've received from Keith-

"I never get sick of our fans, they have given me so much in return. I will take the time, I am honored to be able to be free to do this. Some bands never even get asked for anything, I have been blessed to have thousands of people around the world come together on computers and mail to want to talk, they want to interact, it is priceless. The day I get sick of you is the day I should retire and quit... on that day... shoot me."

    In regards to fans...

"They know us truly and deeply, they can feel us through our songs. I would like to give all of them thanks for just being there, they are our inspiration."

So, to end this all, I would just like to say not to judge Keith based on one bad experience with him. He is a great guy and a great musician. I can understand if subtlerage doesn't like him. But please don't judge the music on the basis of his (subtlerage's) experience. They put out some of the most emotional music I've ever heard, and their technical ability is to be commended- if you would, check out - "The Edge". The .WAV files on their website obviously do not do them justice, as .WAV file quality sucks. As I said, I mean no ill to anyone on this list, but I wanted to give my experiences with Eternity-X and Keith Sudano, and I will continue to stick by them.

oh, do they. chris buzby (keys for echolyn and fg) must have been the principal music writer for echolyn, because 1) finneus gauge sounds almost exactly the same musically, and 2) i've heard that still (formed by three other ex-echolyn members) sounds nothing like echolyn.

i had the opportunity to see the gauge live in march, and they blew me away. they're extremely talented musicians, the singer adds an unexpected element to the music (she's female), and they're genuinely nice people (just like those sweet eternity-x boys). chris and the rest of the crew took time before and after the show to hang out and talk with their fans, and even came out to see part of the opening acts.

finneus gauge's first album, "more once more," should be released really really soon (like in a matter of days or weeks). keep yourself posted at http://ghostland.com/ (i forget the url after that, but that main page'll get ya there).

Until you find out that you and Keith disagree on something, that is, cause he's likely to slap you down the way he did to rage.

I don't care if he goes around healing the sick and feeding the poor. A lifetime of "good" acts and "happy" e-mail can serve quite well in diverting our eyes from someone's true nature. It's times like his conversation with Rage, though, when he is without the benefit of forethought, that we see what he's really like, what's going on in his heart and his brain. A non-calculated, unplanned, kneejerk reaction to something he loathes that brings out the worst in him, his true nature.

This guy Keith has issues to deal with. I don't fault him for that. But I will always remember Eternity-X as "the band that bad-mouths people that like what they dislike." And I'll bring that thought to the counter of the CD shop, too.

i feel like i have to step in here and illustrate a few points. i don't begrudge anyone the right to their opinion, or to react to what they feel to be a hostile letter (be they right or wrong). however, as i was reading the correspondence between andy and keith, a quote from keith struck me. it was something to the effect of:

"rap is just a bunch of blacks screaming about stupid shit."

this is not only unprofessional, uneducated, and racist, it's also untrue. it is this kind of a statement that lends credence to the people bashing this band for keith's treatment of andy. i personally dislike 98% of all rap, and i do think a lot of it is crap, but i would not go so far as to make the kind of statement that keith did. it's just not right.

there are other things that bother me about the whole issue, but this was the one thing that really pissed me off, so i'll just stop with that...

    peace, id

    Hey Jammerz -

Just saw on the Queensryche Campaign homepage a couple days ago - the guys plan on having a different band open up for them at each show! In each case, the band will most likely be a local act that won some kind of battle of the bands or something! Now, I'm all for giving an unknown a shot, but this is ridiculous!!! So much for Dream Theater. What's this about them supposedly opening for the Ryche until JP got sick? Can anyone confirm this?

This said, I'm still looking forward to the 2 upcoming shows (Great Woods and Darien Lake) that I will be attending. I was just hoping for a little more out of the opening slot.

I've been listening to Tool's 'Third Eye' a lot lately, and something came to my mind. It seems that when ppl talk about 'progressive rock', they're referring to music w/ excellent musical execution, great technical difficulty, odd time sig's, long songs (and instrumental sections), concept albums, etc.. But I always took the term 'progressive rock' more as concept than a style of music. I consider it music that tries to move forward and try new things. Of course when prog-rock first started, it definitely was just that... but most prog bands today are just doing what has already been before. Actually, it seems to me that a lot of th e newer ones are just copying DT. So, i.e. they're not 'progressing'. Then, when I listen to 'Third Eye', I hear a 13min. song w/ absoulutely no trace of a standard rock/pop song structure, including many of today's styles (industrial, metal...) which moves dynamically (and I mean DYNAMICALLY)from beginning to end. And it just sounds new and refreshing...of course the first couple of times I heard, I thought it was weird as fuck, but once I got into it, I couldn't stop listening to it. The last record (or song) to have affected me as much was I&W. So to sum it up, for me and what I consider to be prog rock, I think Tool is a lot more prog than most bands discussed on this list. Just thought you'd like to know :)

I guess now I understand why Robert Fripp prefers that King Crimson be referred to as 'art-rock' instead of prog.

If you've been paying attention to the Eternity-X thread that has been going on, you need to read this. Heck... even if you haven't, don't skim this over.

Not quite true. While Keith was wrong to say the things in the first place, I was wrong to bring it to everyone's attention and make a big deal out of this. I was also wrong to make you guys part of an obviously private discussion between myself and Keith, and Keith and Andrew.

Proper netiquette would dictate that we not post our private correspondence, however insulting or inflammatory or impolite, to a public forum such as this. I apologize for doing so, and for inciting people to take action against Keith or Eternity-X. This was NEVER my intention.

Chris (or anyone), if you choose not to support Eternity-X at all, please don't do so on my account or on Andrew's account. As far as I'm concerned, if I had acted with proper maturity, nobody except Andrew and I would have even HEARD of this Eternity-X thing, and my stress level would be a few notches lower.

And another thing... I'd also ask you guys to NOT SEND KEITH ANY E-MAIL about what he said to myself or to Andrew. Don't ask him to retract his statements, as he already has to us. The last thing he (or I) needs is for two million hateful entries in his E-mail inbox or guestbook.

    Speaking of guestbooks...

No, but if everyone doesn't stop harassing Keith in our name, it could very well be.

I'm sorry you and I disagree on this. But if you feel you need to harangue the guy, don't do it for our sake, please. Find some other reason (like "Your webpage is ugly" or "Your grandma wears army boots") but please don't use anything Andrew or I may have said.

I agree that the music scene is very political. I also agree that Keith should have thought things through before he sent any mail to anyone, but that's a moot point now. No, it technically wasn't public domain, because Keith never intended our correspondence to be made public.

If Eternity-X decides to replace Keith, that's entirely their decision. If what has happened changes their mind, well... que sera, sera. But I don't want to be responsible for what might possibly turn out to be the end of this guy's career.

    > So go ahead, bug Eternity-X, bug their record company, and bug your > friends about them. If they're not equipped to handle the public life, > then maybe they should go back into the garage.

Maddy, it's people like you who make my blood pressure jump up a few notches. :)

Seriously though... please, please, PLEASE stop bugging Keith and Eternity-X on our account. I am sure that they have received enough hate mail to last them quite a while. I was wrong to even suggest that people should e-mail Keith about this, and for this I apologize.

Call me a cop-out, call me a wimp, call me a ninny, I honestly don't care. I should never have started this nor brought it to the JAM's attention.

If you have any questions or disagreements, please ADDRESS THEM TO ME PERSONALLY instead of E-mailing them to the Jam. I know I've opened a very large can of worms, but I'd like to close it as quickly as I can.

And, with this, I'm going to have a nice cold beer and relax.

    Hello Jammers,

Walter asked what happened to my frequent reviews on prog-metal and other bands. Well, I got a full time job last February and I was working two jobs up to last weekend. I have been in lurker mode for a while, but the sheer volume of jams has made it hard to keep up. So with the job, and a reunion with Jen, the love of my life <grin> time has been at a premium. Now that I have off weekends, I'd like to get back to keeping up my page, reviewing the 10 or so CDs that are on my TV from bands, and seeing a few more concerts. I'm experimenting with Netscape Communicator this evening, my TCP/IP protocol had been screwed up for two months, I finally managed to find the problem, damn dll files. ACK! Anyways, hello to all of the persons who have been dragging around here since I joined at the end of 1993. Where is the new album? Mike Portnoy, the legions are falling asleep!
