    FATES WARNING

    June 6th
    Scum - Katwijk, The Netherlands.
    Attendence: about 600 (filled to capacity)

    Here's my review of the first concert of the APSOG tour.

    At 23:00, Fates Warning finally started. The set list was as follows:

    -A Pleasant Shade Of Gray

    The encores:

    -Life In Still Water
    -The Eleventh Hour
    -Monument

    Yep, only four songs, but the set did last for 1:45 hours. APSOG
    started with Part I as it is on the cd, with the band starting to play
    at the beginning of Part II. They seemed very happy to be playing live
    again, and the audience immediately responded: the atmosphere
    throughout the entire set was incredible.

    They performed APSOG as it was meant. i.e. as one song, with never
    more than ten seconds between parts. Ray had said in an interview that
    he hoped the audience wouldn't be bored, but I think I speak for
    everybody there that night that APSOG live is an exhilarating
    experience.

    The encores were met by wild cheering. Ray even got the crowd to sing
    along with The Eleventh Hour, and the other two also proved to be
    crowd favourites.

    Jim Matheos and Mark Zonder played even the most complicated passages
    with clockwork precision. Jim handled the difficult transitions from
    electric to acoustic and from one playing style to another very well,
    an Mark did some unbelievable stuff. You have to see it to fully
    appreciate it. At one time early on in the song Jim had to do an
    emergency re-tune of his electric guitar and later on the switchboard
    people messed up the pitch on Jim's acoustic guitar (a very nice
    Ovation), but he handled it very professionally and gave the techs
    enough time to correct their mistake. Jim didn't interact with the
    crowd all that much; he seemed a little shy, but very likeable. He had
    pictures of his wife, daughter and two dogs and (I thought this was
    kind of funny) a little sign saying "J. Matheos" on top of his
    equipment rack.

    Joey Vera is a great bass player, and a worthy addition to the band.

    The keyboard player (darn, I forgot his name!) was pretty good, and
    substituted Frank Aresti's solo's (in Life In Still Water and the
    electric part of the solo in Monument) with his own stuff.

    Ray Alder: yes, he does smoke a lot. At one time he lit up a cigarette
    when he had only one minute where he didn't have to sing, so he ended
    up putting out almost an entire cigarette. But: those of you who were
    worrying he had lost his range, stop worrying. He gave an incredible
    performance, and during the chorus part of The Eleventh Hour ("IIIIIIS
    it so hard...") he sung even *higher* than what you can hear on the
    album! As I said, he got the crowd to actively participate during
    parts of APSOG and The Eleventh Hour; he really was having fun. At the
    beginning of Part IX, probably thrown off balance by the messed up
    pitch of Jim's acoustic guitar, he stopped after the first line and
    had to start over. He looked embarrassed and maybe even a bit afraid
    of what the audience would do, but the crowd didn't mind at all. If
    anything, it showed us they are human, contrary to what the rest of
    the set might have lead us to believe.

    At the end, I got one of Jim's guitar picks from a roadie. It's pretty
    cool: dark grey, with a pearl-coloured Parallels-era FW logo on one
    side and a reproduction of Jim's autograph on the other.

    Bottom line: great concert, these guys are incredible, go see them if
    you can.

    -Marco van Leeuwen.

    Just a quick one to say that Ozz Fest was totally killer. The only
    band I didn't get into much was Type O. Not that they sucked or
    anything. They didn't. I just couldn't get into them. The side
    stage was cool. Downset was the main one there for me. Some phat
    hardcore. Drain STH was pretty cool, too. I had no idea they were a
    chick band until I saw 'em on stage. WOO HOO!!! :) Oh, they did
    rock, too, so the music's good :). Power Man 5000 teased all the
    Manson fans with the main riff from Beautiful People. Everyone got
    pissed when they stopped playing it. I laughed :). Pantera rocked.
    I wouldn't call myself a big fan or anything, btu i really enjoyed
    them. They threw Cat Scratch fever into the first song, and screwed
    around with Enter Sandman when they were setting up :). Phil sang a
    song with Type O. Fear Factory wasn't bad, but I liked them better
    up close and personal when they opened for Maiden. Needless to say,
    Ozzy and Sabbath rocked. Ozzy closed with Mama I'm Coming Home and
    Bark at the Moon. Sabbath opened with War Pigs and closed with
    Paranoid. I got a good start on my tan. It was a good time. If
    anyone was there, IO was the guy that occasionally wore a Pink Floyd
    Atom Heart Mother shirt (probably the only guy there with a cow on
    his shirt :), but I had it off most of the day. Anyway, if you dig
    the heavy music, go to Ozz Fest.

    Hi all

    I just read Ernesto Schnack's comments about the song 'Third Eye' by Tool, and
    I simply have to support him in everything that he says. These guys play real
    progressive music, stuff that hasn't been done before, experimental stuff
    (try 'Message To Harry Manback' or '(-) Ions'), they have challenging lyrics
    (no Hobbits there, thankfully), and the music rocks bits of me that haven't
    been rocked before (including the floppy, dangly bits). Plus these guys put
    on a simply huge live show (pass the body paint, Ernesto).

    But don't try and put a lable on this band - there isn't one that does these
    guys justice. If you haven't heard either Aenima or Undertow, do yourself a big
    favour, and open your own third eye.

    For those who might be interested, I'm having my own personal progfest here at
    work today: Vauxdvihl, Superior, Lemur Voice, Vanden Plas, Spock's Beard. Oh,
    and Nightmare Cinema, of course.

    Ytse drink of the week: Black Velvet - Guiness and champagne 50/50 (hic)

    In the episode "Tick vs. Chairface Chippendale," one of the Tick's
    evildoers was attempting to write his name (Chairface Chippendale) on
    the moon with this big ass laser as part of his birthday celebration.
     He only got the CHA on there before Tick got him. The comic book
    version (pre-cartoon) is actually funnier than the cartoon (if that's
    possible :).

    It's out in Australia, and it's brilliant stuff. I would normally have
    waited to order it from CDnow so I could get it for a cheaper price than
    was charged here, but when I saw that it hadn't been released in the US I

            OOOh, I know this, considering I am Prince of Useless Information.
            One of the episodes of the Tick (early on) dealt with a young
            boy, maybe around 8 or 9, who was incredibly intelligent, but
            was kinda psychotic. He had a robotic dog, and I think he had
            a misshapen head (I'm remembering this from a couple years back).
            Anyway, he developed this super laser thing, and was going to
            "do evil and bad things" with it. He decided to use the laser
            to carve his name (Charlie) into the moon, but the Tick stopped
            him before he could complete it.

            Sorry for the rest of the 'Jammers who aren't interested in this,
            but there was no E-mail address for him, so I couldn't send
            it privately............

            non-prog reviews to come..........

    You know, everyone is getting all these prog CDs, and I can't find any where I'm at. So I get stuck buying non-prog stuff (ok, just shoot me now, I'm a heathen, yadda, yadda...)

    Anyway, some people have E-mailed me from time to time saying they don't mind non-prog reviews on here (some of you have to broaden your spectrum for crying out loud! :P), so here goes, in brief mode......

    1.) Faith No More - AotY Great disc....nice mix of hard and mellow-ish stuff. The only other disc I have is The Real Thing, and I think it's great.....this one is definitely as good, if not better. I would definitely recommend this to anyone....

    2.) Shootyz Groove - Respect A live EP from early 90's of this band, which reminds me alot of Rage Against the Machine and the DefTones(a kick-ass band) - rap mixed with heavy guitar riffs and funky drum beats. Very neat album, but only 5 songs.....worth the $3 I bought it for......

    3.) Elvis Costello & The Brodsky Quartet - The Juliet Letters Now, I was never an Elvis Costello fan, but I saw a special on PBS dealing with this album and its making, etc. (I think it was on Great Performances or something), and it blew me away. A world-renowned string quarter, with Elvis Costello singing..........what a fantastic concept, and a great album.........without a doubt, one of my faves.....

    4.) Groove Theory - Groove Theory An R&B-type group, consisting of two people, a woman who sings and a guy who does all the music stuff....Good album to sit and mellow out to. Her voice is absolutely angelic - I just can't get over it - reminds me of Anita Baker a bit, but with a higher register and wider vocal range......

    5.) Jamiroquai - Emergency on Planet Earth Very disco-ish cool stuff with Stevie Wonder-type vocals. Very similar to his new album, "Travelling without Moving"......nice stuff.....

    6.) Cake - Fashion Nugget These guys are cool. Very raw and basic musically speaking, and very lounge band vocals. You probably know the song "The Distance" (he's going the dis-tance....he going for speed.......). Very cool album, definitely out of the ordinary, and has a killer lounge-act-type version of the disco hit "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor. I like it a lot, but definitely one people should listen to before getting...

    7.) Henry Rollins - Black Coffee Blues Simply put, Henry Rollins reading his book, but with a bluesy/jazz guitar thing in the background....this guy's thought processes are great, and this is a great concept. Very similar to another one of his audio books, Everything, which has him reading a book with a jazz quarter in the background.....It amazes me how much this guy does, and a lot of people just see him as that "Liar" dude......a shame....

    I know I bought 3 other CDs, but I don't remember off-hand what they were........about 3/4's of you have probably skipped to the next message anyway by now.... :P

    Hope this interested at least some of you....I wouldn't dream of writing all this from work for naught! :) yeah, right....

    Perhaps I've been watching entirely too many Weekday Wings episodes lately, but:

    Starting at around 3:20 into Erotomania, the part where JP is soloing and it sounds like classic Top Gun flight deck music :)

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > M-Bone: > But I don't want to be responsible for what might possibly turn out > to be the end of this guy's career.
    You won't. You generally don't find that kind of attitude lasting terribly long in the industry.
    Andy's music is obviously at the very core of his being. It's very near and dear to him. I guess what pushed a button in me was the part where this putz decided, without even so much as a blink of an eye, to rip apart Andy's music from up upon high. One doesn't generally see _professional_ musicians talk about their peers like this.
    I didn't send any hate mail, nor do I intend to. That's kid's stuff. I just wasn't impressed with the sound (.wav quality notwithstanding, I heard it just fine), independant of the ego-centric attitude displayed. Whether it was intended to be public or private alters its reality not one bit.
    When Blind Melon ripped on DT, did you find DT replying with the same sort of insult? I doubt it. It's called professionalism!
    What's the URL for Andy's music again? :)
    OK, I am new to the jam, maybe I should keep my mouth closed, but... I thought that this was a Dream Theater list, not an I hate/I love Eternity-X list. I have never heard of them before, and I now have a pretty good idea of what I think of them. After all of this discussion, I think that pretty much everyone has formed an opinion by now. Nothing more that anyone says will change anyone's mind, so... no offence, but, can we get on with life???
    Hey, got a question for all of you. I was listening to the radio, out here in San Diego, and the DJ was saying that one of my favorite local bands has only been released here in San Diego, or so rumor goes... Is taht true? The name of the band is the Almighty Ultrasound, their cd is called Sonic Bloom. Would Appriciate knowing if anyone has seen or heard of it any where other than here. DK
    Wow, a good post from a newbie. Someone mark the time and date. Deidre, you made some really valid points, but I'm going to respectfully disagree.
    Yes, this is the Dream Theater list, and not the Eternity-X Loves Me/ Eternity-X Loves Me Not list. I, personally, won't be posting anymore about that band specifically (I think I've made my position rather clear. :) But the entire discussion has brought up, for me, a question about something bigger than an NDTC E-X discussion (how's *that* for acronyms? :)
    Perhaps without being overt or obvious, I think this whole fiasco has highlighted one of the reasons we all like Dream Theater: they respect us. I doubt any of us will ever receive e-mail from Mike, for instance, saying "You call yourself a musician and you don't like Zappa??" They're bigger people than that.
    My point, more concisely, is this. We talk about a lot of stuff on this list, and a lot of it seems to have nothing to do with Dream Theater. But I think if you scratch the surface of some of these threads, you'll realize that we all have one common purpose here, ultimately, and a lot of what we write here, whether it's our primary intent or not, seems to reaffirm the notion that DT is a band worthy of this mailing list.
    Just my $2*10^-3, -d
