I wouldn't get your hopes up. Al could pay up but he just doesn't want to.
I heard a new Megadeth song on 98 Rock in Baltimore yesterday. It sounded
good but from all the reviews I've seen so far, I thought it would be a
lot heavier. Maybe this was the slow track?

Hi all
last night I was slumped in front of the TV for my regular 2 hours of couch-
potatodom, awaiting the show 'Metalla' on VIVA. Imagine my joy when I found
out that the featured band would be The Gathering. Plenty of interviews, live
footage from the release party (the new stuff sounded great live - any of the
Dutch jammers there?), videos etc. Watching TV can sometimes be a rewarding
experience. And Anneke van Giersbergen is just so friggin' cute. Do yourselves
a big musical favour, and treat your ears to this band - the biggest thing to
come out of Holland since clogs carved from tulip-flavoured edam cheese that are
filled with genever and have smurfs painted on them (or what do you think,
Itchy?).
stay safe and happy listening

Currently playing: Paradise Lost - Draconian Times
PS One of the videos that The Gathering requested was 'Green Machine' by Kyuss,
so they must be OK

After rereading JP's comments about when Blind Melon bashed DT
(from the FAQ) obviously shows how classy DT is. It is too bad that all
bands can't have the same views and show some class.
About the Rush remasters. Some guy on one of those AOR mailinglist
newsletters has been reviewing the Rush remasters. I think so far he has
seen a big improvement in the sound. He also says that the booklet is
improved as well.
The question is "how many people are going to go out and buy all these
remasters when they have the old cds?". D-man? I don't have money to buy
stuff I have currently when there are so many new cds from great bands
coming out and new cds from great bands I have yet to discover...

Hey Walter,
I would get their actual album, called Jammin' in
Vicious Environments.....it's better quality and probably
easier to find out there......
Thanks for the recommendation.

Howdy buckaroos,
>I heard an interview with Alex Lifeson about a new live album with a >bunch of previously unreleased tracks on it.
Prior to the Counterparts tour, I heard an interview with Neil and Geddy saying that Rush has very few unreleased tracks, they only write enough songs to fill an album, the practice them to death. This was confirmed by a GFTPM article with Geddy and Alex, saying basically the same thing. I would imagine that if such tracks did exist, Mike Bahr would have his hands all over them somehow...:) I had heard from a couple sources on this and other lists that the live album is a double disc set: disc 1 is material from this past tour, including Natural Science and the complete 2112; disc 2 is a show from the Hammersmith Odeon in 197? that features the complete Cygnus X-1, books one and two. Now I'm not exactly reliable, but I heard this from five or six people (one is a former intern at Atlantic), so I'm leaning towards believing it.
>does anyone know how to get the official Rush newletter?
At the risk of sounding superior, don't bother with this. I only stay on it to get ticket and tour info. The threads seem to be repetitive and uninteresting, as they all must somehow relate to Rush. Unlike this list, which is the same, but is doesn't all have to relate to DT. KIDDING!!! As for the NMS list, don't get me wrong, the list-mgr is a great guy(s) (helped me start my list), but it gets stale after a week or two.
>"Big Money got a heavy hand."
With the re-masters, the only ones I would buy are Signals and ESL. So a question: does anyone own the Signals remaster, and is it superior to the original to a noticeable extent? Is it of similar quality to the gold disc? On CD longevity: >Yeah, if you use them to sand your floor. Otherwise, forget about it.
It was my understanding that with regular play, CDs have a life of 20-40 years, as opposed to 5-10 for cassettes (VHS is only 2-4). Can anyone help me out on this one?
>Anyway, form what I can remember, the main stage went something like >this:
Dale rules. Thanks man! Now I'd imagine Manson will go between Pantera and Ozzy. Damn, I'll be sober by then... I can't imagine the sets overlapping in the stadium; it would be hard to hear one over the other I'd think. Oh, well. In two days, I'll know for sure. WOO-HOO! On the Powerslave question, if Ozzy played the Wicked World jam, then it likely was in there.

>Well I just got back from seeing "Chasing Amy,"
Best movie so far this year, IMHO. The "Holy Trilogy" lecture was hilarious. Other recommendations: Grosse Pointe Blank, and Con-Air. The latter really surprised me. The best movie of its kind since The Fugitive, but with a good deal more humor. Looking forward to MKII and SPAWN!!!!

>I was one of the lucky few to be invited to attend the recent Queensryche Secret Desert show,
All right, why the fook does every cool band play these shows in the Southwest? I mean, I live an hour from the biggest city in the US (NYC), and no one plays cool secret shows there. Maybe I should just start liking other bands... Oh, wait. We have DT up here. SUCKERS!!!!! :) -- _____________________________________________________________ Andrew Forcier a.k.a. In Suicide Solution, where the guitar solo should go, Joe Holmes played part of the solo (from Suicide), then they broke into the intro riff from Over the Mountain and played the solo from OTM, cut into Symptom of the Universe, then into Diary of a Madman, and finally part of Believer - then back into Suicide Solution. None of the medley involved vocals. It was all instrumental, with Ozzy introducing Joe Holmes and the bass player (who's name escapes me) beforehand. The coolest thing about the whole song (including the medley) was that they were showing clips of Ozzy and Randy Rhoads from the After Hours TV program they did back in 1981. The whole song seemed to be kind of a tribute or dedication to Randy, which I thought was really cool. It makes sense too, because I think Joe Holmes took lessons off Randy, and I'll tell you what, he was nailing the Randy leads all night. If this guy can write like Randy the way he can play like Randy, then Ozzy better hold on to this fucker, because I'm dying for an Ozzy album up to the caliber of Diary. In 15 years, nothing has been released to top that album. Nothing.

Hey Jrogessive Pammers!
I posted about ten or twelve days ago asking about a Fates Warning album and a Paradise Lost album. I ended up getting what you guys advised. That was, of course, "Chasing Time" and "Draconian Times". I am definetly noght disapointed about "Chasing Time". My favorite track is "Prelude To Ruin". Not to say this is the only song I listen to. I like them all!! "Draconian Times" is a great record, as well. My favorite cuts are "Enchantment" and "The Last Time". Well, I just wanted to thank all of you that helped me out in my decision. The results were grand!

I believe CDs are around 1200-1300 grit, so I'd suggest only using them in the finishing stages of preperation before acutally laying down a nice stain, followed by a glossy polyurethane.

LOL!
Back to Andrew Forcier's query about CD and cassette longevity, initially brought up by <insert name here> (sorry I can't remember his name):
.From _Principles of Digital Audio_ 3rd Ed., by Ken Pohlmann:
"...Because the laser is focused on a reflective layer embedded within the disc, dust and fingerprints on the reading surface do not mormally affect reproduction. The effect of most errors that normally occur can be minimized by error correction circuitry. Because no stylus touches the disc surface, THERE IS NOT DISC WEAR, NO MATTER HOW OFTEN THE DISC IS PLAYED. Thus, digital storage, error correction, and disc longevity result in a robust digital storage meduim."
What you heard about cassettes is probably true, considering that in order for a tape to play it must pass across the tape head and this mechanical contact will of course wear out the tape (through friction) with time. Same thing as when you play records, where the stylus scrapes along the grooves. (I hear well-maintained LP's will last longer than cassette, but I don't know for sure.)
However, the longevity of a CD being anything less than forever is most likely a fallacy. Even if a CD could only last 20-40 years, I don't believe there is any actual proof of this since the first CD players were not introduced into the market until 1982 (Japan and Europe). That's only 15 years ago. :)
I strongly believe this whole "worn out CD" story is comparable to coloring the edges of your CD's with a green marker to extend the life. And if you believe that one, I've got some swampland to sell you in Alaska. :)
