I beg to differ. Many of the people you mention were actually the
benefactors of heaps of accolades from peers and admirers while they were
still alive. Jaco was considered a madman on bass long before he died.

I don't feel quite as qualified to comment on those people that you mention,
however I have been a fan on both sides of the date of Stevie Ray Vaughan's
death. While he died only shortly after I'd gotten heavily into his music,
I was still witness to the heaps of praise that was placed upon him both
before and after his death. He already attained legendary status before he
died. His death only makes us miss him. God forbid, if your favorite
musician of all time were to purchase property conducive to agriculture
sometime next week, you wouldn't praise their genius any more just because
    they're dead.

An interesting footnote : the first "big news" I ever remember hearing about
on TV were the deaths of John Lennon and John Bonham.

It's got such an evil twang to it ;) Cheers to Metallica and Megadeth!!

Yeah, but listen to "Perfect Day for a Hanging" by Tourniquet and you'll
find the intro riff to "Mirror" in the bridge. Or listen to Megadeth's FFF
and you'll find it similiar to "Motorbreath" by Metallica. "Phantom Lord"
by Metallica, "Use the Man" by Megadeth, and "This Was My Life" by Megadeth
all share the same chromatic progression in the same key at approximately
the same tempo. So what. I think it's all good :)

    Hi there.

If DT is in the studio right now, don't you think that a late July/early August release date is a bit early? I know we all want to get the new disc but it's no use trying to fool ourselves into believing that it's going to be out in a month and a half. You're only setting yourself up for a disappointment. I'd say a Sept/Oct release is far more likely.

    Groovy.

Today I got my Threshold "Extinct Instinct" in. This sucker is pretty cool. It's heavier than their other ones and the old singer is back. One of the better new releases I've heard this year. Weird lyrics though. one line is something like "I am the walrus and you are not"(that's not the exact wording it's something like that). ANyway, i recommend this one to DT fans.

    The new Megadeth is cool.

I also got the new Stratovarius "Visions" a couple of weeks back. WOW! This is a good one. These guys are really at the top of their game and I don't think they get the attention they deserve amongst DT fans. The only complaint I have about them are their lyrics...but they're easy to look over because it's just so good. Very listenable disc. What's the deal with the labeling though? My CD lists "Kiss of Judas" as the first track but it's "Black Diamond" and they play Black Diamond again at the end along with a live song (both unlisted). Anyone know what's up with that?

I also got a CD from a German band called Edguy. These guys are pretty standard German Power Metal like Helloween. It didn't really knock me off my feet but it's not too bad. German power metal fans may want to check it out. The productions isn't the best. The CD is "Kingdom of Madness"

    I'll stop now. thank you.

Oh puhLEEEZ. They are anything BUT Jazz musicians. All the Jazz they play, I believe, is rehearsed. That ain't Jazz, my friend. JP couldn't improvise over a Jazz progression to save his life. I hate to be the one to break it to ya, but it's the truth. JP even admits himself that most of the "jams" they play live have the solos worked out for the most part, and if he *does* improvise, it's over very simple changes otherwise he just makes a fool of himself.

And before you (or anybody) starts with "but, but, but they went to Berklee!" I must remind you that JP, JM, and MP were there for ONLY ONE YEAR. Mr. Sherinian, however, might actually be a Jazz musician. I have yet to find out for sure.

They're Rockers who play and write kick ass music. Ask them what they play and they'll tell you Heavy Metal.

Perhaps I should rephrase: They _sound_ like jazz musicians trying to play metal. I don't mean live jams, I mean on the CDs.

Him and every other guitarist :) Personally I like soloing over the E-F-G-A-Bb-C type of progression. The scale name escapes me, but it just is sooooo dark and heavy, especially when detuned 1.5 or 2 steps.

Speaking of dark and heavy, I just bought the new Machine Head CD, "The More Things Change". Very cool. Sounds like Sepultura w/ a slightly better singer, better guitar tone, more precise musicianship and songwriting, and the Dave Lombardo (slayer) type of drumming. Heavy f'n CD. /me likes it.
