I wouldn't like to start a thread on this, so just take this humble opinion
for what it is, and leave it and have a nice day in the sun.
But, when I first discovered DT, that was a kind of music that I was
totally unfamiliar with, but something went straight to my heart. And when
I&W came out it was even better, plus all those bootlegs of various sound
quality. But I could not have imagined then, that the band would later turn
into making songs of Kansas, U2 and Beatles, for example.
Ok, it may be called a bands progress into something new. But unfortunately
(for me) not into the area I'm looking. well, I guess it is all up to them
to make whatever they want to. Then it is my choice to buy it or not, my
choice to call it sell-out or not, my choice to see the show or not. No
other can do that for me, I know.
The same goes with the other bands threaded on this list (i'm not
mentioning anything, You know, Skadz ! ) If the band I like start touring
with spice girls =3D fine. It is all up to them, and if they turn them into
something interesting, even better. If not, I think we're loosing five (or
seven ) great musicians into laziness, but that's just MHO.
But thanks to all you I've discovered new bands in this genre, which I knew
nothing about before, so I can always manage. And , frankly, I'm not really
that troubled with DT. I'm kind of sure that they will blow my mind with
something new, fresh, and extremely interesing this time as well, even
though those demos weren't too extra-ordinair. With the time, I hope
they'll sharpen everything up, and we'll all have a wonderful fall, and a
couple of nice DT-threads.

Do whatever you want to with it, I'm going to celebrate the weekend

This reminded me of something I wanted to bring up on the Jam. Dave
Lombardo used to be on of my favorite drummers, but lately I've been
noticing that in all of the Slayer material he never traded fills
between his hands and his feet. He'll have this blistering doublekick
beat going and when a fill comes up he'll play 32nds all over the kit
with his hands, but the bottom drops out 'cause he never mixes the 32nds
up with his feet too. Compare this to MP, in Ytse Jam for instance.
There is a great breakdown about a 3rd of the way into the song (maybe
halfway) where MP trades 16ths between hands and feet for 2 complete
bars going into the next section. Dave may play with more blinding
speed, but as a drummer, I find it a lot more impressive and
entertaining to hear a guy (or girl) mix it up that way. Another
drummer who is great at trading hands and feet is Deen Castronovo.
Anyone remember him? Not to mention Terry Bozzio - even that Missing
Persons album has those kind of fills all over it.

To clarify: I have heard OF all these artists. I also have heard work by all of them. But I have never heard their solo albums. MacAlpine is from the town next to me, so I couldn't avoid him in the late 80's. And didn't Vinnie open for Rush? And Marty and Jason you'd have to be dead not to know. But I don't think anyone on that list is comparable to the people who they may claim as influences. I love Marty, and I give Jason no disrespect, but both them and Tony and Vinnie are nowhere near as impressive, or influential as some of the other guitarists we've been discussing. And by the way, if we all keep this up, the next thing you know, we'll have drummer debates on the Jam. Right, now that's out of the way, let's get one thing straight: the best ever guitarists (living, dead or just smelly) were Les Paul and Hank Marvin. What do you mean "never heard of them"? Huh, kids of today, no idea.
Serious time again. Do any of you guitar twanging types out there rate Leo Kotke? Sure he doesn't shred (whatever that may mean), but he is without doubt one of the best acoustic guitarists I've ever had the honour of seeing. And how do you rate Steve Howe with regard to his ability to play both electric and acoustic guitar - there are players who are better on one or the other, but for me, he is the player with the greatest ability/talent on both.
Tip for those of you who listen to the track Third Eye by Tool: try listening to the song Using My Third Arm by Pantera before and/or after it. I like it.

Just about any sound card would work for this.. I use an SB AWE32 and it works fine, but anything from an SB16 to an SB64 would work. If you want to go all out and get the card with the least noise, go for a Turtle Beach card.. but don't expect it to work as well as an SB.. and expect to pay a lot more. The SB32 is just an SB16 with some added MIDI enhancements, and the SB64 is just an SB32 with some more MIDI enhancements. The digital capabilities are identical, so if you don't intend to use MIDI, an SB16 would fit you fine.
The best WAV editor that I know of is Syntrillium software's CoolEdit.. www.syntrillium.com and it's Shareware so check it out. The .WAV editor that comes with SB cards sucks...

I had never even heard *of* this guy till about three weeks ago. Then, I was watching the weekly "entertainment" show on CNN, and the last bit was Leo playing guitar, by himself, for about 6 minutes. Now, I'm a bass player who owns an acoustic guitar. They guy down the hall that can play "Over the Hills and Far Away" impresses me. Then again, I really don't know much about playing guitar. That being said, Leo Kottke is one of the best guitarists I have ever seen. He can do that thing where he plays a bassline to suggest the chords, and play the melody (totally different from the bassline) at the same time. Then the guy whipped out a slide and started kicking ass that way. And his compositions were really good, too.. (Well, the one I heard.) Now that Neil mentions this guy again, I think I'm going to look for some of his stuff on CD.

That's almost my point. You will probably still disagree, but I think that legendary status doesn't equal to being a genius. The bunch of people I mentioned definitely were legendary while alive, but have been raised another step up the pedestal and made into geniuses now. I know it's a matter of semantics in a way.
I still think that the factor of an untimely, possibly tragic demise plays a big role in how people rate famous people. There was a moderately famous estonian artist aboard the ferry that sank some tears ago, "Estonia". His days of fame were over, till then. Now we can read in the newspapers how great he was (I'm not denying it, though, his group introduced me to rock music), we have cheap 'B'-bands covering his tunes, I've heard people praise him as a genius... None of that would have happened were he still alive.
Maybe I made my point clearer, maybe stirred it up.
Off I go, looking for a clue and possibly a life.

I haven't heard him improvise over sophisticated progressions. I've tried playing bop myself, and, as a bass player, it's hard enough for me to walk a decent line, much less sound like Michael Brecker, playing a million miles an hour meaningfully over 30 chords in a 16 bar progression. At any rate, I'd agree with you in that Dream Theater isn't in there playing jazz. They DO employ a jazz sound at times, but, like most progressive bands, they tend to work out intricate parts and recreate them live (okay, that's heavy on the "duh" factor...).
