Well, by very definition, a megadeth concert is rowdy and mosh pits are very
common...if your parents are conscerned about this, just let them know that
you can hang back/away the rowdy crowd...most of the time there'll be plenty
of space for you to enjoy the show unbothered by manic moshers ;)

I'm not sure exactly what you mean. It sounds like your parents would be upset if you DIDN'T get to be in the biggest friggin moshpit on earth. If that's the case, then you have REAL cool parents. I assume that isn't the case. :)
Besides, even if they DO open the lawn for Megadeth, that won't be the biggest pit ever there. The one for OzzFest last week was rather large, and the one for Metallica a couple years back was HUGE. I should know - I was in it. :)
I'm getting tix for this show this weekend. I'll let ya know if I find out any other details.

Greetings again Jammerz. I just caught the posts regarding this "secret list" that some record stores claim to have. What they are referring to is a little-known CD magazine called "Ice," which lists release dates of all major and minor label CD's up to 2-3 months in advance. The magazine is available at better record stores and the "secret list" E's prompted me to search for them online. I am happy to report that I was successful. They are at http://www.icemagazine.com/ice and one of the online features is "CD release dates" (they have them ALL, including the no-name labels) and the current listing goes through August 26th with no new Dream Theater on the list. : ( Sorry to disappoint, but you can't expect miracles considering they just got into the studio and the last Portnoy update had them with 4 tracks <almost> finished!! I did discover some good news in finding this site though - the new Night Ranger, "Neverland," is due July 15th, as is the new Sister Machine Gun, "Metropolis" (OK, let's not get out of hand with talk of a rip-off now - these guys are techno-industrial, but they rock!!)
Anyway, based on my experience, Ice has been about 95-98% accurate with new release dates (even though they originally had the new Motley Crue being released in April, but hey, they're getting their info from the record companies and we know how far EastWest have their thumbs shoved up their asspipes!!), so you may want to bookmark this site and keep your eyes peeled. Rest assured, when the release info is made available, Ice will have it as far in advance as possible!! Rock on and keep your eyes on the ICE!!

I just have to butt in here. I got the Altura album even after a few reviews here criticized them for things like 'really weird transitions' and things like that, and I'll agree that some of that does not sit well with me either. But that's only a small part of any one given song! I think they show a HUGE potential. There are moments on this album that are little bursts of total brilliance.And Chad Gibson, the drummer, is an absolute phenom, no question.
And I've also seen some 'they're just DT clones' stuff, which I simply cannot understand. They are no more DT clones than most of the other bands that get raves around here - LV, Shadow Gallery, etc.
'Mercy' has a lot of depth to it, along with some great vocal hooks that I sing all day long. Yes, there are moments that are strange. BUT DON'T LET THAT WRECK IT.

Speaking as an ex-Strawberries manager (the store has since ceased to be, I got out in time), we always did well with prog and metal thanks to me. :) I mean, "A Change Of Seasons" was the big seller the week it came out. I think we moved 30 copies or so. No shit! It killed the new Bolton which came out the same day. Of course, I tended to insult Mr. Bolton quite openly in the store. Fates Warning's "Inside Out" was a simlilar situation. I sold all 10 I got in and some more that I had transfered in from another store. Prog and metal sells if you have it in stock.

I have to agree that Altura has a great deal of potential, and that the drummer is extremely talented. This is the precise reason that I don't like Altura. They *should* be far better than they are. They're all extremely talented musicians, but their writing kills it for me.

That's precisely what wrecks it for me. I'm a fan of good songs, no matter who they're by. Yet Altura, to me, always seems to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Their songs start off great, and have great choruses. But somewhere in between there are passages that totally throw me off the scent of the rhythm and the chord structure. They've yet to learn how to craft a prechorus. So, when the chorus comes in, as good as it is, it often comes from nowhere, and it isn't culminating any musical ideas before it. It's just randomly placed.
I often find myself singing "One By One" in my head - that chorus is fantastic. I'm eager to hear what they put out next, because with the right songs, these guys will be incredible. I'd love to see these guys do cover tunes, because they're so talented as players. But the writing kills "Mercy" for me.
Again, that's just me. I know people that like the album for the same reasons I dislike it. It's a matter of personal taste.

Yeah, I believe you're right. Modes are cool. I was just singing a Ned Rorem song that goes from Bb minor to Bb Locrian for a while. EVERYTHING's flat. :)

YES! My ss/et teacher last year HATED me. He was all into these wierd vocal techniques, and I <being a bel canto singer> just wasn't into it, and therefore didn't sign up for his ensemble. Not that I am closed minded to those techniques--they have their place just as bel canto has its place. I just wouldn't do any kind of throat singing or other techniques that can hurt the voice. but, I digress...
Anyway, this teacher last year hated me and would always try to stump me w/ the sight-singing examples. One day, we were just breaking ground on singing minor <this was cake to me> examples, and he sticks me with one in Phrygian. I quickly recognized the 1 -> b2 and sang the exercise correctly. then he flipped like 5 pages ahead and said here sing this one. Sure enough, Locrian mode. I did it correctly again, although i don't know if I'd call it easy. Rick, if you don't mind could you tell me the trick you know for singing in Locrian mode. Either to the jam or private email. thanks.

Any guitarists have a Wilkinson bridge? How well do they stay in tune? Just curious.
And anybody know how those 'Karaoke' buttons on stereos work? Under what principle do they remove vocals? Frequencies? Or a certain way in which it was recorded? I'm just curious since it only work on certain records, and then sometimes it takes away the lead guitar or the drums as well, etc...
in any case, the only way that thing helps me is when it brings up rythm guitars buried in the mix. It works great w/ Rush CD's....

You should check out Adrian Legg. He's also a very talented acoustic guitarist and writes good songs. And he plays and Ovation through a bunch chorus and delay effects... awesome sound.

Grand opening was tonight...but alas, they sell no Mesa Boogie. :P The store still kicks ass though, no more havin' to drive 30 mins. down to Tempe to play on 7 string Ibanezes and Mustaine/Friedman signature guitars through rad effects processors I won't be buyin' any time soon. Could somebody inform my why Menza's kit doesn't use full sized basses in his kit? I understand, that as it is now, the whole set is a fuckin' beast, but the bass drums aren't exactly full sized. It isn't of dire importance, in fact, it's all in the sake of trivia, for all I'm concerned!
I'm wondering if anybody would be interested in a prog rocker mud. Fuck the progger idea, if we could just role play ourselves as rockers, fighting the likes of Electra record executives, "gangsta" rappers, and toenails! Maybe we could even code in some flying caribou....

Hi, I generally just lurk but here goes... Someone mentioned drummers (talking about Dave Lombardo from Slayer) this is good - us drummers should talk more, I know we're normally thought of as the musicians poorer cousins, but let's face it DT would be shite without a god behind the kit (well maybe not shite but it's the rhythms and different time signatures that make this band stand out - big style). Someone was also slagging Large Oilrig from Metallica the other day - I've always thought he's a great drummer, not in the same league as MP, but solid as fuck and adds exactly the right feel to their music. There can sometimes be too much emphasis on how fast or how talented but let's not forget that it's more important to play something that fits or feels right or just adds that certain something to make a track sound spot on. I think that's the reason Jimmy Page is so respected the man is a riff master - don't you think? Anyway - I'll leave you with a joke - How do you know when the drum riser is level?
