I think that this is on all the CDs. My friend just got this as well and
told me about the same problem.

Guys: Get the Stratovarius album titled "episode." It kicks major buns.
The guitarist reminds me a lot of Petrucci and sometimes Steve Morse (ala
"tumeni notes") on the 8th track of the album. I'm reluctant to buy prog
that I haven't heard because more than once I have been disappointed. My
friend had this up at school and he let me borrow it. This is now one of
my favorite prog bands. I haven't gotten "visions" yet, but plan to. I
have to buy some William Ackerman and Bela Fleck CDs first. :)

Not that I trust everything they say, but my local record shoppe (Tokyo, Japan)
has the next Dream Theater album release date at Aug. 10. A bit hasty, perhaps,
and it's quite predictable they'll 'postpone' the release date. However, if the
news about Fates Warning playing some finished studio DT songs before they went
on, maybe the August release isn't as impossible as it seems?

I just got three new CD's the other day, and would like to share my thoughts.

    * Megadeth - Cryptic Writings

I have heard a lot of positive things about this CD on the 'jam, so needless
to say, my expectations for this were sky-high. Unfortunately, the album
doesn't live up to them, at least not yet. I think the lyrics and some of
the music on this CD are great, but dammit, I can't *hear* anything. The mix
just seems very...mundane. I wish there was more crunch to it.

    Rating: Balls, but no Chunk.

    * Drain STH - Horror Wrestling

I saw these ladies at OzzFest, and I was suitably impressed. Enough to go
looking for the CD, in fact. This is good, hard, crunchy metal. Almost
everyone I have played this for can't believe it's an all-woman band. IMO,
they most closely resemble Alice In Chains (at least musically. They're
    *much* more attractive. :))

Rating: No Balls (anatomically), MUCHO Chunk.

    * Bruce Dickinson - Accident Of Birth

Holy Shit, I think I have an early favorite for my album of the year! I
hated Tattooed Millionaire, I didn't care much for Balls To Picasso, and I
didn't even get Skunkworks, so needless to say, I was skeptical at best
toward this album. I don't know if it was solely the addition of Adrian
Smith, but this album SMOKES. Other than some oddball/cheesy lyrics, I have
found nothing about this album that I don't like. As an aside: I noticed
that this album features Bruce on vocals, Adrian Smith of guitar, and cover
art by Derek Riggs - this band is more Maiden than Maiden is now. :)

Rating: BALLS AND CHUNK - THIS IS WHERE IT'S AT!!

Okey dokey :) I've never taken it any other way. I enjoy the topic....

Well, I'll let someone else address U2 & the Beatles. As I recall,
though, they do cite Kansas as one of their influences. And if you go
beyond the popular radio-friendly hits that Kansas put out and dig
deeper, you'll find some very progressive stuff. You might want to
check out Closet Chronicles, or Portrait. Or don't :)

Absotutely :) Saw Terry with Zappa, who only used the best musicians to
    back him up.

Steve Howe certainly always ranked right up there for me! Wanna hear a
guy make an acoutsic shred? Check out Jorma Kaukounen (sp?). Played with
    Hot Tuna, Jefferson Airplane.

Well, there is SOME truth in that <JP, of course, admits it>, but to say
that "JP couldn't improvise over a jazz progression to save his life"
seems to me to be a bit of an exaggeration. When have you seen him make a

This is called E Locrian mode. Difficult to establish a tonality due to
the absence of a P5 and because of the 1->b2 relationship. Listen to
Metallica's "Wherever I May Roam" for a bit more of this.

Okay, you got me. I was exaggerating a bit.

    > When have you seen him make a fool of himself improvising?

Actually, this is a paraphrase of something JP said in an interview for
GFTPM magazine. And I believe he did indeed use the phrase "make a fool of
myself." with regard to *true* improvisation.

    > not meant to be rude--just asking.

..and "Harvester of Sorrow" perhaps as well? I recall a tune off AJFA
following Locrian mode a bit. Which reminds me, for those with a
background in sight-singing and/or eartraining, it's important to realize
just how easy it is to sing Locrian mode. Most people shy away from the
thought of this due to the disorienting intervallic (sp?) relationships
among the notes in the mode. I was once called upon in class to sing this
mode, and managed to dazzle the rest of the class with a simple trick to
sing it (using solfege (sp?) syllables of course) quickly and in tune. Fun
    fun.

                        Dear MEGADETH fans,
I am hopefully going to see MEGADETH in Boston MA but I had a question about
it I need answered. The venue is outdoors it has seats, and a big lawn where
people can watch the show. For a strange reason they're not selling tickets
for the grass seats, which will cost them thousands of $$. Would they do this
because there could be the biggest frigon moshpit on Earth? My parents are
not happy about that and I may not get to go!!!!! Please write back.

    Hey Jammers-

In cases there's anybody on this list who still doesn't have the
Clockwork CD "Search", I have them in stock for $8. Anybody who has
it can attest to the fact that this is pretty much essential
listening. It's a no-brainer for fans of DT, Shadow Gallery,
    Helloween, etc.

Also, we just released "People of the Southwind" - A Tribute to
Kansas. It's a similar concept to the DT Tribute that's been
kicking around here for years. It contains 60 minutes of
bands & collaborations performing some great Kansas tunes. It's on
tape and it's only $2 for a VERY limited time. so if you're a fan of
    classic-prog, get to it!

For more info, email me at DREG@hutman.com, or better yet, visit our
web-site for info, audio-clips and an order form at the URL listed
    below.
