Just was checking out the Hardradio site (www.hardradio.com) and discovered that they have some remix of track II from FW's APSoG. I can't quiet tell how much of the differences come from the remix and how much of it comes from the conversion to a 20.0 kbps RA file, but it does sound different...

Anyway, go into the main hardradio site, and click on the "music" button (as opposed to tune in, which takes you to their live feed.

Anyway, wasn't sure if thus had been mentioned or not, since I just got back to town and have not read alot of the backlog or not... but check out the site... they normally have some cool stiuff on their live feed as well...

If you are used to singing with moveable do, singing in the modes usually is not a problem with a little practice. My solfeg teacher was always giving us modal exercises. I always found Locrian easier than Phrygian, it must be a personal thing. :)

Yes I will be at the Nissan tonight. I will be wearing a Roll the Bones t-shirt with the kid kicking the skull. Saw the concert at the US Air in November. It really kicked ass.

    > this list? Go find somewhere else to discuss this and stop wasting space! Okay, first if you read my post I was poking fun at them(something that's been done before on the 'jam, and what's going to happen again and again). Oh yeah this is the Dream Theater list, hmm, I remember in that greeting email thing I got that we're allowed to discuss other bands. Oh, you say they have to be prog, hmm, well, what about Megadeth everyone wants to talk about them. Oh I guess they're covered on under the Metallica group, but, we're NOT supposed to about Metallica oh okay that makes sense Ryan(not you Skadz this guy :). Hmm, about why its on the list well...SOMEONE ASKED IF SOME ELSE HAD SEEN IT SO I GIVE A REVIEW(oh how I like caps lock)! Oh my fookin' Ged I was helping some else!! I know I really am a bastard... :-/ Oh by the way it wasn't a huge thread, it was only one post. If everyone posted about every single post that wasn't prog or "Metallica" or whatever they thought was in their view of the way this list should be the 'jam would be a third everyone complaining and two thirds of me shouting at them and Tick quotes! So get off your high horse.

Hmm, this time I don't think I'll use a Tick quote...

Tuatara. You may think I'm nit-picking, but it will help you find it if spelled properly :^)

    > ( incl. members of REM

    Peter Buck

    > Screaming trees,

    Barrett Martin (Trees drummer)

    > los lobos),

Incorrect. (2 for 3--not bad :^) The other members are Justin Harwood (of the band Luna) and Skerik (Sadhappy and Critters Buggin). Other musicians making appearances are: Steve Berlin, Mike McCready (Pearl Jam), Scott McCaughey (Minus 5 and REM), and Elliott Haas.

    > anyone has bought its album?

Yes, a few copies. Hmm.. how do describe this, since I'm not very good at reviewing or classifying music. (Get it!!) It's instrumental groove that's very Middle East-tinged, some solid jazz undercurrents, and a touch of ambient/mellow to it. Many different instruments that aren't frequently played together--the first song equipment list is: drums, marimba, percussion, tablas, congas, bullroarer, Tibetan horns, Taos thunder drum, steel drum, acoustic guitar, upright bass, saxophones, dijeridu, steel drum, percussion, temple gongs, bombard. The other songs don't use that many instruments, but hopefully you get the idea. (Get it!!)

It's definitely _not_ hard rock, metal, or progressive rock, for those who only want to listen to those categories. And it's not like anything you'd expect from any of those musicians involved (well, Skerik may be the closest). If you like Material's "Hallucination Engine," there's a similar feel. And if you don't know "Hallucination Engine," get that one, too--it _is_ the ultimate ambient/jazz/fusion/world album.

The production quality is outstanding--it's actually the first thing that jumped out on my first listen.

I also highly recommend Skerik's other bands: Sadhappy is a drum/bass/sax hard rock (mostly instrumental) trio that is amazing--Paul Hinklin is the first bassist to make my jaw drop since I saw Stu Hamm on Satch's "Flying in a Blue Dream" tour. Check out "Live: Before We Were Dead" (which contains one of the most kickass versions of "Manic Depression" I've ever heard) as a starting point. And they've got a new album (sans Skerik) coming out in a few weeks w/ Michael Manring. Critters Buggin is an improv jazz/fusion/noise band w/ other guys (non-Sadhappy). I recommend their first album (there's only two), "Guest", as a starter.

Hello, So I have one of these on my stereo: >And anybody know how those 'Karaoke' buttons on stereos work?

And when this guy writes, I think, "Dear God, someone wants to have a DT karaoke party..." But then the same guy mentions a use I had never before thought of:

    >in any case, the only way that thing helps me is when it brings up >rythm guitars buried in the mix.

Now that's a cool idea. The button drops out the frequencies that tend toward the high end of the range, much like the eq presets on a stereo have a pop setting to bring up the vocals (and a jazz setting to bring out the mids, and rock to bring up the bass). I found the jazz preset to be especially helpful in making tapes since my damn car stereo seems to have been made for techno and rap: all bass... But back to what this fella mentioned, I've always had trouble transcribing the newer Rush stuff (Signals thru RtB) because of the amount of layering and chorus. So does this help with that kind of thing? Make my life easier...

    >>Clapton is God.

    >One can tell you're a bass player, D ;)

Yep, gotta agree. Clapton, Beck, and Page were all different shades of the same style guitarist. One is no more of a God then the other. They're all legends though, so let's not go on that trip again.

    >if we could just role play ourselves as rockers, fighting the likes of >Electra record executives, "gangsta" rappers, and toenails!

Yeah, but then you'd get people at virtual concerts killing a virtual LaBrie for cracking a bad note. Or someone killing the virtual Sherinian in hopes of a virtual Moore abandoning ChromaKey to return to DT... Oh, and to the guy seeing Megadeth at Great Woods. I saw them at a place in NY called the Capitol Theater, with is an auditorium with seats and all. From the seats to the stage there was about 20 feet of open space. Almost the entire capacity of the auditorium tried to cram into that space. It was the mosh pit from hell. Not to mention it was over 100 degrees outside, thus making it at least 110 degrees inside. Why MD would play any venue with seats is beyond my capacity for understanding. But then, liking Independence Day is beyond my understanding too... :P -- ______________________________________________________________ Andrew Forcier a.k.a. I agree with most of this. They DO have a lot of potential, but I'd say they've actually REALIZED a substantial portion of it, as well. They DO mix things up a little, but "Metropolis" is held up as a massive piece of brilliance on this list, and that's a tune that gets pretty damn disrupted at times. I don't mind it at all, really.

    >And I've also seen some 'they're just DT clones' stuff, which I simply >cannot understand. They are no more DT clones than most of the other bands >that get raves around here - LV, Shadow Gallery, etc.

I'll agree with that, as well. There IS a Dream Theater vibe to some of it, and it sounds to me that they were influenced by the band, but a LOT of the Magna Carta bands sound like that to me. Dream Theater has been one of the definitive progressive bands of the last decade or so....it's natural for the new crop of bands to show some influence.
