Cool. Can't wait. It's this just a one-shot deal or are they looking to
*really* re-form the band? One of the guitarists was in a band called Parish,
but it didn't have that special something that CG had (probably because they
didn't have Midnight...). It's too bad about Midnight, but if the new singer
is even half as good, it'll still be better than most of the metal that's
coming out these days.

solo album "First Impressions" last week and it has completely blown me
away. Accoustic guitar, violin, and cello - that's it. The entire CD
is beautiful - positively brilliant.

Some kind soul posted about three web addresses for good online places to
buy CDs - would you please post them again? While we're at it, if anyone
else would like to recommend this type of store, please let me know
privately.
Down here on the south coast it's really hard to get hold of decent CDs.
Only when I'm in London for the day can I get to Tower and bring home
something I've been looking for. Visits to NYC and London have kept me
furnished with a great amount of cool music, but I can't do that ALL the
time!
And now I have to check Fates Warning (which is the newest album?) out due
to all the recommendation, and of course I can't find their CD here. Same
goes for the new Ron Thal, and most Shrapnel stuff.

Hello,
I spent $125 on music related stuph on Saturday alone and I don't
regret it one bit. However, my financial well being is a notch lower, if
that was even possible...
So my friend Chris gets back from Europe and says "Let's go to the
Princeton Record Exchange" which as many of you may know, is a vaccuum
that sucks the money right out of your pocket. :) In looking around, I
noticed zero collectible DT, Rush, Megadeth, etc. So I looked in my
"lesser bands'" sections. 'Lo and behold, I got a cool two-disc INXS
boot (hey, stop snickering!) that I had almost ordered from KTS and an
amazing Sting boot of him and Gil Evans orchestra at a jazz festival.
This is a must have for any Sting fan. I also got Abbey Lincoln, BB
King, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Soundgarden. Those last four were all
used; discs I had been hunting for used for a while...
WARNING: Long, self-indulgent concert review to follow!
Then Chris (who does not play guitar, but has the utmost respect for
those who do) and I decided we would never forgive ourselves if we
missed the G3 show at the Garden State (fuck PNC, they're my bank and
they suck) Arts Center. So we plowed down there, arriving about an hour
before the show. We go to get tickets at the box office, and I ask
what's available. The guy says "fourth row"! I shit you not! But the tix
were $100 a pair, so we coughed up half that price for lawn. So we get
to the lawn and an usher tells us if we want to, we can move down to the
rear pavillion section! And we were there so early, we got our pick of
seats in the section.
Well, as for the show, someone had to tell us that Robert Fripp was
playing. IMHO he sucked. He sat on a stool turning back and forth
playing some kind of guitar synth. The silly thing was, he got up and
walked away every so often and the music kept going. And it was so mind
numbing I almost screamed. Worse than Chinese water torture. The only
thing worse was the guy next to me yelling "Fripp's a trip!" right into
my ear...
Kenny Wayne Shepherd: yeah, I think I heard this guy when his name was
Stevie Ray Vaughan. :P It's one thing to pay homage to a guy, it's
another to rip off his solos. I could hear 6 to 8 bar sequences that
were literally ripped from SRV songs. The opener was practically (if not
actually and intentionally) an instrumental version of Tell Me. And his
singer was so mediocre it was agonizing. It's kind of a disappointment
to see a blues guitarist that doesn't sing. It's kind of anti-climactic
to me. Still, almost any blues is good blues, so I happily went with the
flow and tapped my foot.
Steve Vai: Well I thought he was improvising last fall at the first G3
show, but apparently not. Most of the improv stuff was the same here,
and the song list was identical with one exception. My friend Chris and
I agreed the exception was the best: Angel Food. Kenneally is on my list
of purchases to make now. Not only can Mike play a mean guitar, but he
can play those keys too! And Vai may be looking for a new guitar tech at
the end of this tour as his current one was obviously incompetent. My
friend Chris described most of Vai's set as "wanking" with too much
whammy and "hey, I can do this and you can't" stuff, and agreed that the
slower stuff (Angel Food, For the Love of God) was better.
Joe: ahem, awesome. AWESOME, I SAID!!!! Improvised for real, changed
his set list, played Ice Nine and Mystical Potato Head... I think I'll
give up the guitar, I'm obviously not this good. :) But Joe has got to
dump this Stu Hamm guy. I mean every time this guy Stu does his solo, he
makes Joe look bad cause he's SO FUCKIN' GOOD!!!! This time Stu threw
Moonlight Sonata into his solo. My bud Chris described the feeling
well:"Stu just sits at home learning this stuff to show everyone he can
do whatever he wants..."
Jams were good, but there was no reason to have Fripp in on them, he
sat in a corner and did nothing. The songs were the same as last fall,
but they threw in You Really Got Me before Red House, too.
Overall, great show, glad I caught it, but the one last fall is still
the best EVER. Joe and Stu were so much better than the rest of the
show, I wish they'd go back on tour alone again. The sound was way to
quiet and muddy at this show. Yes, I said QUIET. Oh, and the t-shirt was
too cool to pass up. One of the best prints I've ever seen. Just hope
the shirt holds up to the laundry!

Chung Ng talked about Ben Jackson (guitarist of Crimson Glory)'s post & pre(?) CG band called PARISH. I got their only album released 2 years ago. Musically, very melodious disc,but there's a lack of ENERGY that CG used to have. So this one is diffinitely AOR disc, that's what I wanna classify this. The song "Racheal's Eye" (the opener) really attracted me,but the remaider on this disc are a bit soft to me,though there's good melody in them. Some kind of collector's disc.

Hello, Well, I keep getting snagged at work when I use Netscape mail, so I figured I'd send from my Lotus Notes. Less obvious this way. I don't think my co-workers know this can be used for internet e-mail along with intranet. The cads... So I bet some of you are wondering why the hell I'm bothering to say this. First to apologize for the little blurb note I sent moments ago. Second, to let you all in on a piece of info. For those who don't read GFTPM, I picked it up and poked (not perused :) ) through it and saw a Satriani article. And guess what: he's got a new album due out at the end of the G3 tour! He's been recording on the tour breaks and says it has been one of the most creative times in his career. So this fall, keep an eye out in your local CD shoppe. I assume that everyone who purchased the Megadeth CD got the Cyberarmy notice on the back flap. I've been holding off on joining, but now that they're offering a CD, I figure "why not?" Question: what songs are on the CD? And is the rest of the CA package worth the investment? Any Canadian, New York, or Vermont jammers know where the Montreal Jazz festival is going to be, or who will be in the line-up? Curious. I heard it's August 2 & 3, is that correct? Well, back to the grind for now. Only two more weeks till I give my notice, five till I'm quit, and six till I head to sunny South Carolina!

I was wondering if the bootleg had some of the new Dream Theater songs on it? Of so, I was wondering if anyone knew were I could get it.

I have been on the "Stickwire"(List devoted to the Chapman stick instrument) mailing list for quite some time. I heard from Scott Malone (bassist for Cynic) and a few others that John Myung has purchased a Chapman Stick. Does anyone know if he is going to be playing it in the new album? That would be really cool if he would because it would add a different perspective to some songs. For all of you who don't know what a Chapman stick is, it is pretty much a ten string tapping board with no body split in tuning to accommodate a guitar and bass range.

[On Altura] A few jams back people were talking about Altura. I believe someone was defending them saying that they were no more a DT clone than Shadow Gallery and the like... I have to disagree here.
I have Altura's debut Mercy, as well as SG's second CD, Carved in Stone. The Shadow Gallery CD to me sounds very original. There was nothing that jumped out to me and said 'that sounds just like DT'. The music and vox are great, and even if they have a DT feel to them, it's not glaringly obvious or overdone.
Altura, on the otherhand, seems to have had DT in the CD player between breaks in the studio. I'm not saying it to be cruel or anything, there is a lot of good stuff on that disk, but there is a song where it goes into a completely out of place abbriviated version of the middle section of Metropolis. I don't mean it reminds me of Met., I mean that musically it sounds like it's the same thing, only shorter. And it doesn't fit in the song at all. People who disliked Metropolis for that reason would hate Altura.
Not only that, but there are other places in the CD where I have been able to spot the opening drum beat from Pull Me Under, and an almost exact copy of the bass and drum lines from Lie. Altura doesn't just 'sound like DT' to me, in places they 'sound like they *copied* DT.'
I know this sounds pretty harsh, but Altura actually is pretty good. I agree with Chris that the CD could have been a lot better than it is, though. There's good parts and bad parts, but the things that stand out the most to me are the obvious DT ripoffs (or continual amazing coincidences, depending on which side of the fence you stand), and the distracting and out of place musical segues.
Of all the bands I have heard described as DT clones, Altura is the only one I've heard that clones DT's *music* itself, and not DT's *style*.

For those of you who are getting your hopes up for a July release, don't. The band has been saying for quite some time now that the new CD won't be out until Fall, say Sept/Oct. I'd love it next month, just like the rest of you, but it's not going to happen.
As for the rest of the Ronnie Scotts' stuff being released, there will be 1 more track from that show on this year's Fan Club Christmas CD, along with the studio version of the instrumental jam from the Awake tour and the notorious 'Nightmare Cinema' incident from the Euro Fix shows. The rest of the tracks won't be out until next Feb. on the Metropolis II EP.
