            Last night I went to see The Artist...(prince)..and I must say I was
    blown away. I never thought that I would like this guy but he was simply
    amazing. The guitar solo in purple rain made the hair on my arms stand up.
    He is an incredible guitarist. I had never heard purple rain until I saw JP
    do it at the St Louis clinic and I must say that princes version last night
    was just as awesome. If you want anymore details feel free to email me
    personally.

    See ya,
    Corey

How do they sound like?);

    (everything is strictly IMHO, flame privately please :)

    WOW! Never heard Queensryche? Well, they're good, but they'll never be considered trend-setters. I mean, in the early 80s they were donning the whole tight red pants, leather straps, no shirt, and makeup of early 80s metal. In the mid-to-late 80s they were into the whole poofy hair thing and glamourized guitar playing. Late 80s/early 90s was the best time for Queensryche with the release of the stellar albums "Operation: Mindcrime" (a must have!!) and "Empire". I'm sure you've heard Empire or Silent Lucidity. YOU HAVE. I KNOW IT :) As for their new stuff, well, once again following the trends. Promised Land was a pretty dark album (maybe they decided to finally be a real METAL band here, but I could be wrong), kinda boring, but it has a few gems on it. I thought this was going to be a bold new direction for the band, but it unfortunately was not. As for the new album, "Hear in the Now Frontier", well, I traded it with a friend for the new Fates CD. HitNF is a sell-out album IMHO (no flames please, and no Metallica shit). A good one, but still a sell-out album. It's very grungy, but still in the Queensryche _style_. The vocals and the drums are a bit simpler, but the guitars are still pretty good (just nasty tone :( ) and the bass thunders like it always did. Good CD, but just not my style.

    > - Fates Warning.

    More prog than prog. Good band, but like coffee, it's an aquired taste. Go get "Parallels" or "Inside Out" and judge them for yourself. Personal fav songs of theirs : "Kyrie Eleison" (The Spector Within, 1985), "Eye to Eye" (Parallels, 1991), and "Monument" (Inside Out, 1994). This band is good if you like the progressive side of Dream Theater. They're a metal band, but not very heavy. The guitar sound is distorted, but thin, and the drummer shows off alot. It all fits into the music quite well, but like Derek Sherinian said, "There are reasons why Fates Warning is not on a major label."

    > Well, feel free to add any band here that you think that everyone >should know.

    you asked for it ;)~

    In the case of used CD's, the artist already *got* their portion of the sale - when it was sold the first time. This arguement that buying/selling used CD's "hurts" anyone is ridiculous. I hope when you go out to buy a new car you buy a brand spanking new $25,000 one, rather than a used one for a couple thousand bucks. I'd hate for the car company to miss out on their "cut" if you buy used. :)

    There is at least one RR non-Ozzy release. Many of you may forget or (gulp!) not be old enough to remember that prior to hooking up with the Ozz, RR was in Quiet Riot. (!?!?!?!?!) As I recall, there was some controversy surrounding his exit from the band, but someone else might be able to remember more details.

    I don't think RR played on any of the original QR releases, but there is a 10-track 1993 release on Rhino Records called Quiet Riot: The Randy Rhoads Years. Check with Rhino to find out if it's still available. I haven't listened to it in a while, but as I recall it was a wee bit disappointing, so don't kill yourself trying to find it. I will give it another listen and let you guys know how it is.

    While Joe Satriani has had far more "mainstream" influence than Steve Vai, I find Steve Vai's music to be more interesting. It's certainly a lot more experimental. Both will be remembered, but for different reasons.

    Randy Rhoads played in two Quiet Riot albums,but I don't know if they were released in cd...I think this album,"The Randy Rhoads Years" contains songs of these 2 albums...

    Yes,I think that Vai's music is much more interesting,and,in my opinion Vai is a better guitarrist...

    Used CD's are definitely a Good Thing. Before I started buying music simply because I'd heard of it on this list, I was quite hesitant to plunk down cash on something I'd never heard, let alone heard of. But so many people kept talking about how great this band Fates Warning was, that I told myself that one day I'd buy a Fates album. Well, I was CD shopping one day and saw Inside Out available for $7, so I picked it up. Since then, I've bought three other Fates CDs at regular price. I'd say the band got their cut.

    24 hours from now, I'll be seeing Rush. Life is good. :)

    Hey, guys,

    Just coming out of lurk mode to offer a few HOs on some discs I picked up today.

    Amorphis - "Elegy" - All I can say is WOW!! This has got to be one of the best albums I have bought this year. These guys are some incredible players. However, the death-metal vocals (someone once called them Cookie Monster vocals) can be a little off-putting. There's another "normal" vocalist, tho, and they divvy up the time pretty evenly. I cannot recommend this disc highly enough. Can anyone tell me if their other albums are this good?? The local MediaPlay had "Tales of a 1,000 Lakes" and a couple others. Info would be appreciated!

    Faith No More - "Album of the Year" Okay, this is the first FNM album for me. Gosh, they're really hard to pin down aren't they? First off, I really like this album. It runs the gamut of "hard" music. Early favorite tracks for me are "Stripsearch" and "Collision". If you like your metal a little on the bizarre side, pick this one up. (It's not quite as bizarre as Tool's "Aenima", tho. That one really threw me!)

    As I said, my humble opinions. Now, a couple of questions. What can anyone tell me about a band called "Anathema"?? I saw "Eternity" today and almost got it. Any info?

    Also, can any Atlanta jammers point me to some indie record stores where I might find some of the harder-to-find jammer recs like Angra and Symphony-X?? Personal e-mail please!

    Hey gang -

    Just picked up the latest issue of Metal Edge. Inside, you can find some pictures of Mike, Marlene, little Melody (who is adorable), and dog Bongo. Cool stuff. They report that the album is gonna be done hopefully by the end of September. According to Mike "a long overdue full world tour will immediately follow". Thank God!!!! :-)

    Hey, I asked this before - has anyone ever heard of a band called "Visionary"? They are supposedly a cross between DT, QR, and Metallica. I'm curious. I searched the net and found a page by a band called "the Visionary Project". Although they are prog rock, I am not so sure this is the same band. Can anyone help me? Thanx!

    i tried sending this when i first re-subscribed, but it didn't happen, so i will now try it again, with some minor editions.

    "the return of the prodigal ytsegoon"

    yo! wassup peoples. i'm back, under a new name and new life, but we can't ever forget the fact that the wild koba will ALWAYS live on.

    it's good to be back from my little cross-country trip. ya'll people live in some crazy places, i tell you. but i gots to give the mad props to the jammers in south dakota (if there ARE any of you, that is). although i met none of you (i didn't meet anyone really, other than miss deb seeger), you guys live in beautiful lands. straight up!

    how did it go? well, 9000 miles of driving through a lot of places and bugs with no problem, and of course, it has to happen.....with about 100 miles left to go, i had to get hit by a deer on i-80. luckily, i'm still here. unluckily, the fucking deer is, too. even worse, my car (my BRAND NEW PATHFINDER, that is), ain't feeling too good. but oh well. so kevin madden, as to why they don't pick up the dead deer? FUCK YOU! well, i'm sorta kidding. i would have felt so much better if it died, but now when i'm 40, sweaty and greasy, wearing "american made" t-shirts, i'm going to take up deer-hunting and decimate the deer population of eastern pennsylvania.

    but yes, there are lots of dead shit on the road. point well taken.

    i'm looking foward to catching up on any dt or prog-related news i've missed in the last month or so, so i'll be keeping my ears and eyes open for y'all. so with that in mind, this now my new address, so if you need to find me (like i'm hoping mike bahr does soon enough), i'm here.

    peace out, muthafuckers! ytsegoon

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** new since last update * new in last two updates ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

    ** Well, I'm back home in St. Louis now, probably permanantly, so you ** don't have to worry about the Ytsejam shirt ordering address changing ** every 3 months... I'm starting a new job, so things are hectic, and ** this update may be slightly inaccurate in places, but I'm working on ** that.

    ** Anyway, it's been a month or more since the last update, and I still ** have a big box of shirts on the floor of my room, so I thought I would ** post again and remind everyone, especially newbies, of the presence of ** the shirts.

    The M shirts are now sold out, and the XXL and XXXL shirts have been sold out for quite a while. There are still 6 Large, and 61 XL remaining.

    I did manage to make the money to make the final payment in time for the shirts. From this point on, the shirts will be going towards paying back my loan for the downpayment. Thanks again to everyone who has ordered, and all of you who plan to.

    I would just like to take this chance to thank everyone who has been so supportive of the shirts... It's nice to know that my work on this project is appriciated. And special thanks to Chris Hailey for the amazing artwork.

    ======== Web Page ========

    There is a web page online, complete with ordering instructions, facts and figures, comments on the shirts, actual scans directly off the shirts, a list of paid orders, and a mini FAQ. Check it out at:

    http://www.cclabs.missouri.edu/~c675311/ytsejam/

    ======= Details =======

    The Ytsejam shirts are two sided prints. The front of the shirt features a *full color* raytraced graphic from Chris Hailey in Washington. The graphic is a beautifully done scene with the Majesty logo floating behind a group of marble columns on a tile floor with a wide view of space visible behind.

    The back of the shirt is in a solid light blue color. The majority of the design is a huge Majesty logo, framed by the Dream Theater title at the top, the mailing list address on the sides and "Ytsejam" at the bottom. Below that is "Internet Mailing List" between two more Majesty logos.

    The current lot of shirts is 217 (they printed up more than I asked for, but I'm not complaining). If those run out, and demand is high enough, I may run another with a slightly different design.

    You can check out all of the details, as well as a preview of the shirts at: http://www.cclabs.missouri.edu/~c675311/ytsejam/

    Please note: Due to some legal issues, the University will no longer allow me to keep this commercial advertisement on their server. To sidestep this issue, Chris Merlo was kind enough to put the page up on his account. Please go to the URL above and follow the link to the new site.

    ======= Pricing =======

    The cost of the shirts is $16 each. The shirt is damn close to concert quality, so $16 is a steal (last Dream Theater concert I was at charged $23 for a shirt!). If you are picking the shirt up from me directly the $16 price stands. If you can't get the shirt in person, you can order one through the mail for $20 to cover shipping.

    I spoke with the people at the post office and I've decided to set the shipping prices outside the USA at $9, for a total of $25. I realize this is damn expensive for a tshirt, and I'm sorry. If individual prices are signifigantly less expensive, I will gladly return a check for the balance.

    The rundown: L or XL shirt, picked up: $16 L or XL shirt, mailed in the US: $20 L or XL shirt, mailed outside the US: $25

    ======== Ordering ========

    The shirts are open to mail ordering now. Mail orders will be shipped out every Wednesday via Priority Mail for US orders, and airmail for all others. Checks and money orders will be cashed before the order goes out, most likely on Monday. So far, mail orders have gone well, the only problem I have had has been with the bank, not the post office, so don't worry about your orders. All US orders are insured for the amount paid for the shirts and shipping, and insurance on airmail depends on the country and other aspects.

    To order, send a check or money order for the proper US dollar amount (see pricing above) to:

    Pat Griffin 6581 Bradley Ave <-- Note the change of address! St. Louis, MO 63139

    Make them payable to Pat Griffin, and remember this in US dollars.

    Be sure to include: Your name. Email address. Mailing address. Phone number. Quantity of shirts you want to order. The size of each. Whether this order is for pickup for mail order.

    I will keep you up to date on the status of the shirts through email.
