I've posted about this before, but I'll write about it again for any
    newbies.

I don't know how the CD Cellar is now, but in the past this place has been
known to rip off many people. It claimed to have many things in stock but
actually these things were NOT in stock. I ordered a CD from them and
never got it. Instead he sent me videos because the CD I paid for was not
in stock and he could not get it. So NEVER give this place any of your
    money.

    Hello everyone,
I don't post often, but I figure I should let everyone know about a new
prog-metal band out of New York City that will be going places real soon.
They are called Alchemy and they are a must-see and must-hear for any Dream
Theater fans. Their lead singer is a cross between Crimson Glory's Midnight
and James LaBrie. They have a three-song homemade demo right now but will be
going into the studio to record their first real demo/album. And for more
DTC, they will be recording at Bear Tracks, where DT recorded. Alchemy will
be playing a club in Manhattan on July 11 (I will be hearing from the band
soon on the location) so feel free to e-mail me if you are interested in
    seeing this great upcoming band.

    Take care,
    Adam Perkowsky

4 tracks, they're half way done with the new album (~30 minutes).
All that's left to do is record Metropolis 2, and the album is done!

I went to a local metal store today and found:
Dream Theater: Fix for 96 on double CD for $59.99
It contains all the songs from the a "Fix for 96" show plus
two songs from John P's clinic.
The CD cover shows James singing.

Does anybody know about this CD? Sound quality?
It looks like a professionally done CD, not a crappy bootleg.

    >Any other Jammers make it to that show? Mike Estok ("Michelob" on IRC) and
    >I didn't see too many DT T-shirts last night (only one, in fact)...

Ooh! Ooh! I was there! I was there! 8^) I was even wearing my black
"classic" ytsejam shirt. We were pretty far up though, and if you could
tell what kind of bass Jackson was using, then you were probably far
away from my wife and I (btw, the way the stage was oriented in the Rose
Garden totally kicked ass. For those listening on the sidelines, it was
in the middle of the stadium, and they had over half the stadium behind
the stage curtained off, so they were facing one side. We were up in the
200 section, but it was actually very close to the stage, and we were
looking almost straight down over the top of the band. Almost seemed like
    I could pop a loogie on Degarmo's head. =)

Anyway, I agree, fantastic show. I think the Promised Land tour had a
better "performance", although that's just cuz I like to see Geoff Tate
ham it up so much. ;) (he did a little of that too, tho).

    A few additional comments:

For those that have complained that Geoff's voice has been ruined by
smoking, and that he was forced to sing like a normal person on the latest
album, well you're wrong. It appears that the vocals were done that way
by choice, because he was belting out those long high-pitched shrieks just
as strong as I'd ever seen him do it before. I was very pleasantly
surprised by this, because I was expecting the worst. Empire, Jet City
Woman, Breaking the Silence, Take Hold of the Flame, you name it, he
    nailed it. It was great.

Since Matthew commented on Geoff's apparell, I'll comment on Chris DeGarmo's
choice of clothing...I swear the boy was having a 70s flashback or something.
He wore a yellow, skin-tight, velvet-like t-shirt with white jeans and tan
shoes. My first impression was that he was going for the grunge-y look, but
then I realized I had to go farther back than that to the Greg Brady look. =)
It looked especially funny since all the other band members wore fairly
classy clothing. I was amused, anyway. ;)

Matthew or Mike, can one of you email me a setlist of the show? I may get
flamed for this, but I never bought HitNF, since I didn't like Sign of the
Times and I heard that most of the album was more of the same...I thought
I'd judge the songs in concert, and sure enough there were a couple I liked
(and alas, a few I didn't like as well). Anyway, I'd like to know what
songs these were (plus I'd like to know what the last song of the encore
    was...I don't own anything prior to O:M, and I didn't recognize it).

If I knew that there were other 'jammers getting together for concert events
here in Portland, I would have tried to hook up with you guys. Next time
Rush or Queensryche or DT come through here (only one more to go! ;), email
me or I'll email you and see what's going down. The only other concert I'm
planning on going to anytime soon is Boston (hey, what can I say...they
hearken back to my childhood, and it'll probably be another decade before
the next tour...plus I might see Tom Sholz show up with a piano he made out
of a toaster or something ;).

Enough for now, on with the 'jam...

Well, I also have the first 20 or 30 minutes of the show (until the U2 song), but it is has bad quality and I'd never call it a "video". It is, at most, a tentative of a video. Nothing more than this. And I also have the MTV special, but again, it has poor quality.

    Hi, there.

Since I'll have a lot time now to try different things, could you tell me something about the following bands? Are they worth anything, should I ignore everything put by them, the must have albums etc.

    - Amorphis (I saw a video called "My Kantele" and it is really good. If their other releases are like this, man, this band must be more famous); - Opeth (only heard that they are very good, but nothing more. Is it truth?); - Queensryche (serious, I don't know anything by them, and don't know where to start. How do they sound like?); - My Dying Bride (someone told me that their albums are better than Metallica's "Master of Puppets". Ha ha. I doubt it.); - Fates Warning.

Well, feel free to add any band here that you think that everyone should know.

Thank you very much for any comments, Roger...

Hey folks. Just one last reminder to all the Jammers that are planning on attending upcoming Rush shows. Great Woods is tomorrow night. Me, Skadz, Jon P, and Rastafrog want to meet jammers. Before and after (heh heh, I made a Rush pun :) the show, we will be hanging out in the parking lot being loud. :) I will be wearing the Pat Griffin Ytsejam t-shirt, and a green UVM baseball cap (why break with tradition? :).

Saturday night, Montreal. I heard from a jammer that there will be a bit of a get-together before the show at the Peel Pub on Maissoneuve. Rastafrog and I will be there (although I may have to wear my Mets hat in the rival's town :). Come down and find us if you like.

Next Monday, Toronto. I don't know what Syrinx and I are doing before or after the show, so talk to us.

Don't be shy! Come up and introduce yourselves! We want to meet Jammers! -d

Well, I just got home from a week and a half of vacation spent driving around the north central states of the US. I noticed many things which made me think. Since I have a captive audience, I figure I will make them known.

    On Pennsylvania:

Can't you people pick up your roadkill off the highway? We counted 20 dead deer on the side of the road along I-83 and I-81. As soon as we entered New York they magically disappeared. Hmm.

    On Vermont:

As I told D-Man, it seems like the state consists of mountains, cows, and backpack-toting chicks in Birkenstocks. Very pretty, though. (The state - not the chicks, per se.) The 50 mph speed limit threw me off.

On some new cds I bought for the trip:

G3 - live : well, I guess this was ok. I like all three artists, and wish I had been at the show. I guess this disc will tide me over. But don't spend your last 14 bucks on it.

FNM - Album of the Year : It's them. I need to listen to this more. No opinion yet.

    On Ontario:

Nice of them to have one superhighway from Niagra Falls to Windsor/Sarnia. Not. They *almost* do, but not quite. There seemed to be a lot of strange-looking people in downtown Hamilton. Am I wrong? What's up with the 1 second yellow lights? We USA types are used to hitting the gas upon recognition of the amber hue. This shortness resulted in the illegal crossing of red ;-) And talk about people not respecting the speed limit! On 403 (I think) we were busting 75mph through the construction zone on a one lane road (each way) behind a Winnebago. You gotta love it.

    On Michigan:

70mph speed limit. Need I say more?

    On Indian Casinos:

Remember the stereotype indian guy who always said "how" on the cartoons? I'll tell you how. By taking all our money in their casinos. More power to 'em. It was just odd after being used to the decadent, rotting splendor of Atlantic City, going to this itty-bitty casino where their idea of a large beer selection encompassed varieties of Miller and Coors in an aluminum can. Yikes. Funny thing? I still lost money.

    On Strange Milage Signs:

Ever seen the beginning of US41? It's cool. It says "Miami 1,910." That's a long-ass haul.

    On Wisconsin:

You knew it was coming. Anyway, you gotta love the sausage races at County Stadium. 4 dollars beisbol tickets aren't too shabby, either. But those $2.75 20-ounce Cokes have to go.

    On Middle-of-Nowhere Ohio:

Man, these people SCARED me. Inbreeding? We stopped at a Dairy Queen somewhere outside of Columbus, and there were some frightening sights. Really obese people in polyester slurping on extra large servings of ice cream. Failing to wear bras when sporting sleevless garments. (Normally that's not bad, but in this case...) Dirty, greasy, smelly guys without shirts snorting and spitting. Cue that banjo music.

On Returning Home to 40-odd Jams:

Whew. This is better taken a few at a time.

    On Used CDs:

I think people would be better served complaining about this practice than the bootleg one. I bought a couple on the trip (Voivod, Thought Industry, and Wicked Maraya) and I had to think that this costs artists more money than any boot ever could. I only have maybe 15 used cds in my collection of over 4 digits. What about the people who only buy used? The artist never sees any of this $$.

On Stupid Ads in the paper:

Product: Fight Fat Fat Inhibitor Plan

Disclaimer: The dietary supplement in this plan is for nutritional use only and does not contribute to loss of weight or body fat

My Question: Who could be so stupid?

Ok, that's enough to fill up your boring Sunday afternoon. Bye.
