Get 2112. The title song is very long (20:48 minutes) and really
    nice/complicated.

If you can locate a copy of Stu's solo album "The Urge", the solo, entitled "Quahogs Anyone", is on it. The solo varies nightly and tourly, so it may not be the one you heard, but has many of the same elements. On Legg:

Well, the "Cryptic Writings" CD (hint, hint, I *just* got it!) also has these "HDCD" logo.

I don't know, but I think that the master for the CD was done with 20 or 22 bits of resolution before generating the CD master...

Got the new Motley Crue cd today and well...

It is hard to get a decent opinion but the ballads are like the old crue and the rockers are basically the last album with Vince on vocals. It has a couple of weird songs where Nikki Sixx sings on one and Tommy Lee sings a song to his son-weird. I have to listen to the cd on a good cd before I can really give a decent opion. Computer speakers just dont cut it. The packaging takes a lot to get used to...

Best Buy had a ton of the new popular titles but no Divine Regale. Metal Blade bites at getting their cds out... cdconnection.com does have it listed.

Holy shit. This was one intense show.

The drive there and back: ------------------------- Fortunately, uneventful for once. (Well, except for trying to keep up with Jon "Leadfoot" Parmet through Boston traffic. :)

Great Woods: ------------ I hate New England. Allow me to get that off my chest first. I'm pretty much sick and tired of the Northeast, to be precise. That said, when I graduate in four years, I'm going to look for a job in or around Boston, so I can see more concerts at Great Woods. This place is spectacular. With the exception of the $5.25 beers (drink in the parking lot!) and the hour wait to actually get out of the place after the show's over (drink in the parking lot!), what an incredible venue. The part of the place away from the seats isn't some concrete alleyway like at Jones Beach. It's more like a park, with picnic tables and such. And we had a stellar view of the sun setting over the back wall of the arena. The acoustics were clear and clean, and at a perfect volume. I, personally, had a blocked view of the projection screen, but 99% of the place does not. (Besides, I'd seen it before, and I'll see it again. :)

Rush ---- I noticed towards the end of the show that they were videotaping last night's performance. Maybe that explains the extra-energetic show that these three geniuses put on. I'd actually spent the past couple of weeks debating with myself about whether DT had become my favorite band. No way.

Ged and Alex were jumping around all night like 12 year olds air-guitaring in front of a mirror. With two minor exceptions, every single song was perfectly executed. These guys were *tight*. Like a well-oiled machine. The first set kicked my ass because I hadn't seen them in 7 months (and cause it had 2112 in it). The second set, though...

They came out with "Test for Echo," and just kicked ass. Then a few more songs and "Leave That Thing Alone," which was perfect, into Neil's solo. Now, I'm a bassist. I respect good drum work, but drum solos generally bore me. Especially Neil's recent solos, because they all seemed to sound the same, with only minor changes. Last night, Neil kicked my fucking head in. The drum solo on the next live album should be called "Here's a bunch of shit you'll *never* be able to do." Neil is god, yada yada, but he impressed me more than he ever has before. I was just dumbfounded. I guess it's because I had a really good view of him, and I could see all his limbs flailing about in controlled chaos, beating every piece of hardware he brought on the road with him. I don't know how else to describe this solo - it was flawless, and it was unapproachable.

The next part of the show just wasn't fair. Immediately after that solo, they went into "Natural Science." I loved this song already to begin with. But I think I got a contact buzz from the people in front of us during this song. There was this one light shining right in my face that kept changing colors really quickly during the song, and they played it with so much precision, and so much emotion, that it was transcendental. Words fall short of explaining how damned good this song was. Natty Sci last night might be my greatest Rush moment ever (and this was my 9th Rush show).

The stagehands got into the act, as well. During "Tom Sawyer," there were two dinosaur hand puppets behind Alex's amps. One was holding drumsticks, and I couldn't tell what the other was holding. But they were bopping along to the music (we could see this on the big screen). Then, the camera panned down, past the naked Barbie doll, to a sign that read "We're not the only dinosaurs out here." Classic. :)

This was the best concert I have ever seen. They were *so* on last night. IF ANYBODY HAPPENS TO COME ACROSS A TAPE OF THIS SHOW, LET ME KNOW. I *WILL* MAKE IT WORTH YOUR WHILE. I NEED A TAPE OF THIS ONE. Sorry.

Skadz' Place ------------ Much better with furniture. :)

Well, if you want to hear where songs like "Metropolis" came from, try _Permanent Waves_ from 1980 ("Jacob's Ladder" and "Natural Science"), and _Hemispheres_ from 1979 ("Hemispheres" and "La Villa Strangiato"). But I think Kev's keyboard influences came more from the 80's albums like _Signals_ from 1982 and later.

But if you're only ever going to buy one more Rush album ever, make it 1981's _Moving Pictures_. Side 1 is a genuine classic, and "The Camera Eye" alone is worth the price of admission.

Don't take this the wrong way: I think *every* Rush album is a classic, but that's as close I can come to guessing which tracks had a direct influence on the DT boys.

If you are looking for albums similar to Dream Theater in the complex sense, try 2112. This is an older album (1976) and Geddy sings almost entirely in his upper register and it is definitely complex. The older albums (Permanent Waves, Hemispheres, Farewell to Kings, Moving Pictures, etc.) have more guitar in it while albums from the '80's seem to have more synthesizers in them. I personally love all Rush albums and have problems picking a favorite. You will find different opinions from everyone.

I saw Rush at the Nissan and during the intermission I was getting drinks. My husband said they didn't show any of the clips that they showed at the US Air in November. Instead they ran Nissan commercials for the whole thing. I guess he should have expected that. The concert was well worth the money and the dinosaurs at the end were really funny. They get better every time.

    Hey everyone,

So, it was the strong advice from a friend that I went out and ppicked up the July issue of metal edge..WHY you ask, why am I rambling? Because they reviewed nearly all the Megadeth websites on the WWW...which includes 2 of my sites. So, cool eh! All really good reviews...in fact, here's the Dream Theater content for the day: Pictures of Mike P. and his wife in the hospital with their new kid.

Megadeth content: Well, my deth pages are boring and everyone is thinking when am I going to update the damn things, well, this week expect some MAJOR changes and they all should be in place by Friday or Saturday. The faq' been re-designed and trust me, you will ALL like it, new images and backgrounds, new information and so forth. Lots of changes are comin, take a look at it later, I may end up putting the faq up tonight. if you have links to anywhere in the faq, expect those 8 pages to be gone, this new version will make everything so much easier to read and understand.

Figured I should speak up at least ONCE a month...enjoy.

The message is pretty self-explanatory. I remember last summer when one of my favorite bands, King's X, needed help from their fans via radio requests for "Ear Candy". This summer, it's Queensryche. Don't stand idly by, DT could be in the same predicament one day. If you like Queensryche at all, now is the time to show it!

No shit. That's who I heard when I first bought the disc.

I agree that Shepherd he sounds a lot like SRV. What really sucks is that he probably listened to dozens of different blues guitarists while learning how to play, and he's probably done hundreds of live shows despite his youth, it's just that that one influence shines through above all of the others. He's most likely honed his style over the last ten years playing live shows and actually jamming with real live guitarists on-stage, and he probably hates the "Stevie Ray clone" label, lord knows he's heard it to his face more than once.

Interesting point about blues guitarists. I can't think of any who don't also croon out a few vocal parts. This really hits hard when you consider that the whole act, the five-piece band that Shepherd plays in, is called "Kenny Wayne Shepherd." He's not exactly the frontman.

    > Steve Vai: Well I thought he was improvising last fall at the first G3 > show, but apparently not. Most of the improv stuff was the same here,

You can only improvise something for so long before you know it inside and out. Then it isn't improvising, it's performing. At least Vai goes out on that limb when so many bands/acts never go outside the confines of the album material. That free aspect is part of the reason I love Dream Theater's shows so much.

    > and the song list was identical with one exception. My friend Chris > and I agreed the exception was the best: Angel Food.

YES!! :) Just that one section of the Suite is spectacular enough.

I agree. Vai slips into that mode during live shows, who knows why. But I also think Petrucci can think the same thing at his clinics. "I can play this chromatic etude by Chopin on the guitar, and you can't. Plus I can play it at the speed Chopin meant it to be played at on a piano. And you can't. But I'm not finished, because now I'm gonna play it...FASTERRRR!!!" Showmen show-off. The only reason people might not think that of Petrucci is because he SPEAKS to his fans and lets them know he's human. Vai really distances himself, which makes it pretty easy to think of him as an aloof bastard. Or just a bastard.

    > Joe: ahem, awesome. AWESOME, I SAID!!!! Improvised for real, changed his > set list, played Ice Nine and Mystical Potato Head...

How the $@%#!&? did he do those wacky drill-noises live? And did they sound anything like the album?

Queensryche should cover AC/DC. There is simply no better choice for AC/DC cover tunes. Tate could belt out those notes, and I bet Wilton and DeGarmo could pull off some neat dual-guitar arrangements of Angus' solos.
