I just wanted to take a minute and tell you about our new website. Pixel
Planet contains reviews on a variety of topics, including music. Besides
reading reviews, you can add your own comments or read the comments of
other visitors. This will let you get the opinions of other people, not
just the review. Currently, there are reviews for CDs from Dream Theater,
Shadow Gallery, Altura, Fates Warning, Marillion (the new one) and other
bands. Check it out if you get a chance. Thanks!

sorry, i just don't care for the Spice Girls. i enjoy this list a lot
because it has such a wide variety of stuff in it. i just thought that
the spice girls were a little too far. but then again if you want to

is there anywhere on the internet that i can go to hear tracks off of the

Earlier today, I said that Tuatara did not consist of members of Los Lobos.
That was somewhat incorrect. Steve Berlin is in Los Lobos, but he plays
bass penny whistle on only one song--I'm sure he's considered a guest
musician, not a full band member.

I had to chuckle at all the posts about Altura's transistions.
It appears that many listeners were turned off by their angular harmonic
and rhythmic modulations. Hhehehe.... Years ago there was this cool cat,
John Coltrane, of course! Nobody could get over his crazy style.
Instead of playing simple (not so simple!) lyrical lines over a solo this
nut started playing angular passages that left the listener in complete
confusion because no one predict his next move. Many could not listen to
him. He would , for example, play F# mixolydian over C7. Some licks are
so complicated that they can hardly be transcribed. Soon, others
followed (hundreds of jazzers) and it turned into the modern day NY
progressive sound. Each new player is always looking for ways to throw
the listener. They like to tease you.......just when you think you got
it, they throw a curveball. If you expect the band to help[ you through
a tune with easy to follow transitions (like many great prog) then you
better find a new style. The bands of this genre are progressing fast and
if they follow the road that Jazz and Classical have (stravinsky/Chick
Corea) we are in for some real abstract shit!!!! God, I love music.....
Do yourself a big favor and check out those unpredictable transitions
with open ears, I think you'll dig it! Altura definately is not at the
head of their game yet, though. In the right direction! I want to hear
more harmonic flavoring in the future of prog!

    Greetings,

Well, you've all undoubtedly read about an alleged new release in July that
fellow ytsejamming types have mentioned hearing about. Well, please permit
me to put forward a theory with the hope that it will then spread into a
    widespread rumour.

    *ahem*

    Point 1
A new release is being mentioned for July, which we all know to be rather
early seeing as DT are still in the studio.

    Point 2
DT ask Mike Bahr not to release his bootleg of Ronnie Scott's Uncovered
gig. Since then we have heard nothing about this.

Now, the crunch (in case you haven't realised yet):

The new release could be the Uncovered gig! yeah! How about it?

    Well, *I* like the idea...

Let me know what you think...

    Love, Spiff

Well most likely the promoters are sandbagging... they want to make sure the
seat (which are infront of the grass) sell out (or close to it) before they
start selling grass / lawn tickets....

Also most likely there will be some moshing as it is a heavy concert. But
they are never as bad as they seem. Just stay either in front or
    behind the pit.....

Maybe I read this wrong.... Are they not selling tickets for the seats? and
only selling for the lawn? If so and there are a few number of seats
these can somethings got to Radio Stations, and other Coorperations before
they are ever offerred to the public.

good luck, I hope you can check them out!!!!

I *love* the idea, but I doubt it. Somehow I don't see EastWest chomping
at the bit to release another live album, when the studio album is almost
done, and they don't know how well it's going to sell in the US. My own
pet theory is that they listed the release date so early to whet our
appetites, and see if anyone else out there is paying attention, and that
the date will get pushed back and back until the record is released
    sometime in September.

Of course, I could be wrong.

Well, I would love it if it had the *absolutely* complete
"Uncovered" with every single chatting (you may have noticed that they
have deleted some talking from the "A Change of Seasons" covers) etc.
Otherwise, I already have an "Uncovered" that has every song.

But what I'd really love to see is an Uncovered *VIDEO*.

I saw the entire "Trust" video: I was making my rounds at work, and I saw Mustaine on the TV without his King V, so my curiosity was piqued. Longtime 'Jammers know that I don't care for Megadeth, and in particular, their last 2 albums, but I really like the new song. Anyway, everyone else looked and played their normal instruments, and Mustaine was sporting this Gibson-Thunderbird-looking Jackson. I guess he can sit down and play his guitar now: flying v's can be a pain in the arse sometime. Oh yeah, one more thing, the video ran during the regular M2 broadcast at night.

Agreed. The drummer can make the difference between a good band and a great band, and I think moreso than anyone else in the band. And this is from a non-drummer's perspective.

    >Someone was also slagging Large Oilrig from Metallica the other day - I've >always thought he's a great drummer, not in the same league as MP, but solid >as fuck and adds exactly the right feel to their music.

Lars and Mike are simply more than just drummers in their respective bands. Lars takes care of the business aspect of his band, and he dealt with the Elektra lawsuit head on. Mike is his band's historian, probably the most accessible member of DT, clinician, and just look at his involvement in "Working Man", for example. Both guys are spokesmen for their respective bands, and when either of them talk, I listen.

    >There can sometimes be too much emphasis on how fast or how talented but let's >not forget that it's more important to play something that fits or feels right or just >adds that certain something to make a track sound spot on.

Exactly. Technique is nice, but it's what and how you do with your technique that really matters. Some people argue that "less is more." Others want to "shred or die." Just shut up shuttin' up and play!

    >I think that's the reason Jimmy Page is so respected the man is a riff master - >don't you think?

I can't get into Page's music like his then-contemporaries. I certainly realize his talent and influence on my favorite players, it's just that I don't see Zeppelin as the mega-band that others are more than welcome to. I also remember a Page interview where he revealed that he really didn't know any scales, so yes, the man is a riff master, and a self-taught one at that. Well,

I just got back from seeing Rush. Pretty good show. But there were too many ignorant drunk people at the show and they made things really annoying.

It's also bad that Rush skipped playing songs from many albums such as "power windows", "presto", "signals", and others.

Oh yeah, I went with a friend of mine who likes Rush but is not die-hard and he was asking me about which songs Rush was going to play. "Are they gonna play that song called 'red baracuda?'"

    :)

Also, my friend told me that before a certain song, Geddy would say "this next song is from MY album 'counterparts.'" I didn't hear Geddy say "my" at all, but my friend said that he heard him say this. Can anyone that has been going to the shows shed some light? Thanks.

    Hi, All.

Well, I have just received this JPPV video and it has really nice sound (say A, stereo), but the video is terrible (say, B or B-). And I know that it's 2nd generation *at least* (counting the first person who taped from the broadcast as 0th generation or master).

Maybe I'm a videophile and I don't know, but I would really like to get a better copy of this video (I think that I'm only interested in HiFi enabled copies). My copy is watchable, but I don't think that I had much fun watching its first 40 minutes, unfortunately due to some "waving" of the images (it seems to be a copy generated via RF cable and not via composite signal, if you know what it means).

I'm interested (as you have guessed now) in trading for this video. You can check my list of Dream Theater/Megadeth/Metallica bootlegs at <http://www.ime.usp.br/~rbrito/bootleg.html>. Please, send your replies to <rbrito@ime.usp.br> containing the boots in which you are interested. Please, read my rules.

I'm sorry for the waste of bandwidth, but this is the place where the probability of people having this video is highest.

Hope to hear from you soon, Roger...

Another outstanding concert by Rush. Woah, baby. My g/f's jaw was on the floor after seeing her first Neil Peart drum solo. She always used to say she hated drum solos. "Whee, i can hit stuff," she used to say. Feh. Not anymore. :)

The PA at that Nissan Pavilion is STERLING! It was not overly loud, everything was clear, it was a good mix <the guitar solos needed a boost, but...>. Great place to see a concert.

    Here's some DT content <well, sort of...>:

I went to pick up my g/f. She lives in Bel Air <ca. 3 hrs from Nissan>. I brought lots of CD's. Whole mess o' Rush, Working Man, Carmina Burana, and APSoG. I figured we were good. We got to the concert fairly early and were in the car listening to music before going into get our seats. You all should have SEEN the hissy-fit she threw when she noticed that I had no Dream Theater with me. At first i thought she was kidding, but GUESS NOT! Anyone who has seen her would probably never think of someone as petite and cute as she is as scary, but then I looked at her and she was glaring at me and she had her contacts in so her eyes were MEGA-green and I must say that I was frightened for my life! Mental note: have DT CD at all times!

Great show from Rush. Much performance for your performance dollar!

We already told you.... it's only going to be released in Japan with James singing Japanese... pay attention!!

Plus, all the songs sound like Smashing Pumpkins and RATM mixed together...
