In a message dated 97-06-29 18:52:42 EDT, you write:
<< WHAT THE FUCK?! Okay, first there's nothing heavy or metal about any
music sammy's ever done, he's a cock-rocker. Every single song is about
sex.That sucks IMHO
Look at the majority of the new album and latter day Van Hagar. Maybe you're
confusing sex with love. And even if you're not, where the fuck in the rock
n'roll rule book does it say that you can't write a song about sex? Sex is a
(necessary) part of life and therefore is fair fodder for songwriting. To say
you can't write about something is only going to limit you.
. Heavy music deals with heavy issues.
Personally, I'd rather hear a good song about sex than a shitty song about
global warming.
Second, this is WHY metal doesn't have good sales anymore.
Why was that again? If you really want my opinion on why "metal" isn't
selling that well, I'll be glad to give it to you in private, but I'll tell
you this: it has very little to do with topic choice.
You'd be hard
pressed to find a real metal band like Anthrax, Slayer, Testament, or
Sacred Reich doing a headlining tour in front of 8,000+ fans a night, like
it was possible back around '90, or '91. When people think metal nowadays,
they think of the glam.
I have always maintained that glam does not exist. "Glam" itself is an image,
not a style of music. Everyone from Bowie to the Dolls, to Motley Crue have
all worn make-up, teased their hair, etc., yet the musical similarities
between these groups are few and far between. What is commonly referred to as
"glam" I refer to as hard rock or melodic hard rock. I do agree that "metal"
should be reserved for harder bands like Slayer, Sepultura, etc.
The pouffy hair, the red tights, the screeching
vocals, the cheesy guitar wails, the arena-rock drum beat, every song about
sex, etc.......you know the drill.
Talk about your generalizations. I'll agree that towards the beginning of the
90s, the hard rock scene had become stagnant, but every genre reaches a
saturation point eventually. And, for the second time, NOT EVERY SONG WAS
ABOUT SEX. If you want examples, I'll be glad to furnish them.
Since people nowadays look back on the
whole glam thing as a mistake, a time of unwanted bombast and excess, they
perceive THAT to be what people refer to when they say "Heavy Metal".
Lipstick and fuckin' tights.
First of all, which people are you referring to? The popular rock press
(Rolling Stone, Spin) all regard it as a mistake, which is funny because they
were supporting it while it was popular, leaving me to wonder how in ten
years they'll look back on some of the "artists" that have graced their
covers recently. But I think it was (and will be) the greatest time in
musical history, where musical competentcy was required (at least by 90s
comparisons) and that people were just out to have a good time, write a
catchy song, and get laid in the process. The good bands didn't take
themselves seriously, a lesson which a lot of the 90s bands could stand to
learn. People have been brainwashed into thinking that the 80s were this
horrible time of shallowness. Think the 90s are any better? They're just more
subtle. This is especially true in the music business, but that's another
post.
If anyone's gonna flame, the addy is vgl@syspac.com
(patiently awaiting Richie's 80's defense :)
I didn't mail you privately because I don't consider this to be a flame. It's
a correction.

Well, as far as I know Michael Monroe hates that disc. Stevens was supposed
to play the guitars in clean and simple rock'n'roll style. Still, while
Michael wasn't present at the studio (the vox were recorded before the gtrs),
Stevens shredded like hell. This led to a dispute between the two musicians
and this, in turn was the end of Jerusalem Slim's short life. Monroe didn't
want that cd to become a heavy metal album and considers it the worst of his
musical career. That, of course can be debated. :)

Well I had to admire the step Tom Cruise took away from his usual self,
becoming a helpless agent who actually NEEDED other people. I didn't know
he could squirm. Quite a change from his usual role of, say, a young cocky
racecar driver, or a young cocky airforce pilot, or a young cocky
prosecuting attorney, or a young cocky bartender, or a young cocky warrior
saving the world from Darkness, or a young cocky Irish boxer, or a young
cocky billiard champion... I'm waiting for an oscar-winning young cocky
magician who wins over the heart of Princess Di. Or something.
I also admired the performance of Kelly Preston. Such caliber. I thought
no one could have played that role better than her. Vocal acrobatics
unparalleled in the world of acting. Bravo.

Hi all
why do I ask such an obviously stupid question? Easy, because I've been out buying CDs again (one of the advantages of working in the German computer industry - 14 salaries, 2 in June and 2 in November).
So, what goodies have I got in store for you this time? One is an album, or rather band that has been mentioned here a few times, and the other is a tip I was given on the My Dying Bride list. Here goes...
Drain - Horror Wrestling
I try and listen to this without thinking 'oh yeah, this is that hot chick band from Sweden'. It works. Simple, hard music, sometimes quite heavy, well played but no brilliance (you don't need it for this sort of music). These girls are a serious band, not some leather bitch band dreamt up by some impotent record lable executive in order to fulfill his fantasies. Who needs the Spice Girls? 8/10
Within Temptation - Enter
If you like Theatre Of Tragedy and The Gathering, then make space in your CD collection for the debut album by this Dutch band. After the first few seconds of the first track I knew that my money would be dropping into the pocket of my local CD dealer - I instinctively knew this album was the right one for me. Goth/doom at it's best. The female vocalist, Sharon den Adel, sounds like a mix between Anneke van Giersbergen (Gathering), Liv Kristine Espenaes (Theatre Of Tragedy) and Kate Bush. The music, which is sometimes wonderfully bombastic, manages to be dark and heavy yet at the same time be very catchy, a whole new experience for me. As I said, I consider this to be a must for all fans of The Gathering and Theatre Of Tragedy. This could well be the discovery of the year for me. They even mention Neil Peart and Frank Zappa in the 'we would like to thank' section. 10/10
Must remember to steer clear of the record shop today (psst, hey kid, wanna buy some CDs?)
stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de) Currently playing: Paradise Lost - Gothic

But if a guitarist can > pull off playing a lick in warp speed why do you criticize him? Ask > yourself this, if your at a Steve Vai concert do you cheer louder when > he plays a slow melodious riff or a furious octuplet tapping frenzy? And > then you wonder why showmen show off... > > Isaac
A lengthy re-post, yes. Firstly, I cheer loudest at all moments of a Steve Vai performance. Secondly, since you haven't specified an audience, I'm going to assume that your post refers to me. I MEANT that you can't tell what Petrucci is thinking during his clinics, but it's clear that any performer puts together a performance based on what they think the audience will want to hear. I said "showmen show-off" meaning "Vai is the sort of showman who will put on a good show." I'm fully aware of his abilities. Perhaps he does crazy things on-stage because he's happy.
Then I went on to say that Petrucci escaped the "arrogant" stereotype associated so frequently with solo guitarists by communicating with his fans on a human level. I don't know why my post was replied to with "It ain't braggin' if you can back it up." because being a showman has little to do with the idea of "bragging." You can't play "For The Love Of God" note-for-note live in-your-face on-stage etc. and be accused of "bragging" because the playing is actually happening before the audience's eyes and ears. Da Man said it best - "the audience is listening."
Then Isaac wonders why "you people" want guitarists like Vai and Malmsteen to "play down" to a lower level of technical ability. This comment can't be directed at me. So somewhere, sometime, there must have been people posting to this list expressing their dislike of technical guitarwork. I've never seen these posts, which leaves me scratching my head as to the source of Isaac's complaints. Hey Isaac, have a Ron Thal transcription on me. :)
If anyone here hasn't seen "Face Off" yet, for hell's sake, GO.
Mike Portnoy's as bald as Kojak, or my name ain't Chris Ptacek.

**************** Imagine if Petrucci was playing over a C7 vamp with a simple mixolydian mode. Then all of a sudden you notice an abrupt feeling of intensity because he starts playing C# mixo over the C7 then resolves it. Then out of no where he starts shedding in the Tetrotonic 13 b9 scale.....then to C minor pentamelody.....slowly the solo darkens........WOW! ******************
I'm not familiar with the Tetrotonic 13 b9 scale or minor pentamelody. Is that minor pentamelody of which you speak a melody formed from a minor pentatonic scale or something totally different?

I just wanted to say that after listening to all my DT stuff including some DT boots, I have concluded that JP has to be regarded as one of if not the very BEST progressive rock guitarist on the planet. How much better could a guitarist be. I read some posts about Satriani and Vai being to best, but these guys don't play with the caliber musicians that Petrucci plays with. IMOH the other guitarists are the whole band, and when JP does his solos there is greater versatility to them. Not to mention that JP writes awesome lyrics. Anyone agree that JP deserves more superior recognition?

Hello all, Lars wrote: >That means we prefer hearing about Dream Theater or other PROG music! >You know, like Rush, Fates Warning, etc.?
Funny thing is, you rarely talk about these things yourself. No wait, I'm sorry. That's not funny at all.
>I thought things were pretty bad with all the Megadeth talk
I guess the next thing you're going to say is that Skadz shouldn't have posted his comment that the new Megadeth is cool. Why do you bother? Every time I see your name in the subject I just wait to see the diarrhea you've smeared on my screen this time. Though I disagree with Vince's comments, he has every right to say them. This list is about music. Good music. Bad music. Music Jammers like. Music Jammers dislike. And as a tangent to that, it is about Jammers themselves. So by Lars's theory, we cannot discuss Ibanez guitars, unless they are JPM's. By Lars's reasoning we would not be able to discuss Chopin's Etudes unless JP had done them in a clinic. Wait, we can talk about Tyson, because MP likes him. Talk about blondes too, cuz DS is a fan of em. And KJLB is Canadian, so we can discuss Prince Edward Island. In case you haven't figured it out, we can talk about almost anything we want. Why, cause Skadz is a nice guy. But every so often, he has to tighten the belt, deeming a subject off limits when a jag-off like you spews ass-puke. So while you're busy making up rules Lars, why don't you go back and read the ones Skadz created in the first place. He's the list manager for more than one reason. And on a completely unrelated note: Bafu, did you want a copy of the list, or were you just trying to get a snicker out of me? Hey, Mark,
If you really like the Number of the Beast, try getting Powerslave as yer next Maiden purchase. Most Maiden fans will recommend Seventh Son of a Seventh Son first, but Powerslave still has the vintage sound of NotB, and the band, by that time, had really grown, and the music's much more refined.
