    Hey All -

I'd like to take the opportunity to comment on a couple of things, if I
    may:

1.) I got the Meat Loaf trivia answers 'cause I'm a HUGE fan:
a.) The Manilow tune is "Read 'Em and Weep"
b.) Bonnie Tyler's biggest Steinman hit was "Total Eclipse Of the
    Heart",
but she also scored a smaller hit with the tune Steinman
    co-wrote with
Dean Pitchford, "Holding Out For a Hero".
c.) Celine's "All Coming Back To Me Now" is Steinman's current hit.

Got any more Loaf Trivia? It's great to see that there are other fans
    out there.
He's one of the most amazing entertainers I've ever seen.

2.) Some people are asking about a Savatage Z-Rock show. I have on tape a
    show
from the "Edge Of Thorns" tour recorded at some State Fairgrounds in (I
    think)
Chicago??? Not sure. Also can't remember the whole track listing, but
    I'll do
my best: Lights Out, She's In Love, He Carves His Stone, Skraggy's
    Tomb,
Ghost In the Ruins, Conversation Piece (LOVE that one!), Edge Of
    Thorns,
Hall Of the Mountain King. There might be others. I have that one on
    tape as I
recorded right off the radio. Savatage totally rulz!!! Is this the
    show people are
          asking for?

3.) Also, I've had bad experiences with Wildside Imports. Well, I guess it
    could've
been worse. I haven't been ripped off by them, but they took forever
    and a day
to get me stuff. In fact, I ordered "Awake" from Japan with the bonus
    CD 'cause
it came out before America. Well, needless to say, in a fit of rage, I
    couldn't wait
any longer and had to buy the American disc to appease me while waiting
    for the
Japanese one!!! I wouldn't really recommend them, IMHO. But, others
    have
given them good reviews, so who knows? I REALLY would recommend
    Terrible
Ted's Import Music (I've read some references to him on the Jam
    before). I
would also very highly recommend Buccanneer Records in Baltimore. They
are very helpful to you and get stuff to you FAST. They have a lot of
    Prog stuff
like most of the Magna Carta catalog for pretty cheap (including the
    first Shadow
Gallery and first Magellan). Highly recommended - (410)-931-9380.
     They also
advertise in Goldmine magazine if you want to see an ad. I also VERY
    highly
recommend R.A.M. Music from Milwaukee. They used to advertise in Metal
Edge or Metal Maniacs (I don't remember...), and they are great too.
     Very
helpful on the phone and also very quick. FYI, he's started carrying
    boots and
will tell you about sound quality if you ask. And, yes, he has some
    D.T. boots.
He used to have the "Uncovered" show on CD (soundboard quality) for
    sale, but
I think he's sold out now. Anyway, he's still got a few D.T. titles
    for sale. Their
          number is (414)-781-5293.

That's all for now, Jammerz. Have a nice day... - Matt T.

just saw lost highway... just had to post about how cool this movie was..
despite its really slow intro once it gets going its like a mix between
jacobs ladder (the movie, not rush song) and.. eh... i dunno, cant really
explain it further in comparison.. its very demented, and if by the end of
the movie you have NO idea whats going on then it did just what it was
supposed to... i'm gonna be thinking this one over for weeks.
    woohoo!

OK all you SF area types (and you know who you are), here are the must-see
shows coming to The Edge in Palo Alto:

    1. Blackmore's Rainbow March 19. I've only heard one song from the new
album and I didn't like it, but Ritchie Blackmore is a bona-fide living
legend and if you can make it to this show don't walk, RUN to your local
BASStard outlet for tix. They're only $15 plus bend-over charge.

    2. Cheap Trick March 28. These guys flat out fucking rock, no two ways about
it. For those of you that weren't lucky enough to be around in the mid to
late 70's, these guys were HUGE! They tour the midwest and east quite a bit,
but this is the first time they've headlined out here in the three + years
    I've lived here.

    3. Wallflowers March 31. Bob Dylan's son Jakob on Vocals and guitar as
well as main songwriter. Looks and sounds a lot like his Dad did before
his Brain got fried. I've got my tix for these shows already and I'm
glad March is here. The month is gonna rock!

Coming April 9 is the original punk, Iggy Pop! This is also another must-see
    if you're a music historian.

Grammies: They suck! They always have and they always will. Back when I was a
kid (shortly before the invention of the wheel) the winners were always people
like Frank Sinatra and Mel Torme. Great singers but not known for music to
mosh by. Now the people who run the show are people who grew up listening to
people like Springsteen and Clapton. Again, great musicians, but not exactly
on the cutting edge of 90's music. When this generation takes over 25 years
from now it'll be bands like Pearl Jam and, if there's any justice in the
world, Dream Theater and Rush will be getting all the accolades and the future
generation will be whining that their favorite band doesn't get the recognition
    they deserve.

greetings boys and girls.......more dt musical analyses for you to digest.
today's lecture will feature a detailed evaluation of the 20 minute plus
opus, "a mind beside itself". please feel free to add your own thoughts and
    beliefs, et al. thank you.

    professor ytsegoon.

    a) erotomania- the concept of the distorted, harsh organ calling us to
attention at the beginning is a rather floydian concept (also freudian, if
you think hard enough)...kinda like the "tolling of the iron bell" in the
reprise of "breathe" before "great gig in the sky." interesting. effective.

i love the motive in the beginning....chormatic, and odd-metered....it's
really cool. it's heavy, but grooving, even in the odd meter parts, which
isn't so easy to do. also, great interplay between guitars and keys.
unfortunately, i believe the bass isn't very prominent for most of the song,
which i think is a shame....and really, there must have been something else
mr. myung could have played, instead of doubling petrucci so much! i also
sense that portnoy is pretty restrained here.....he could have easily anally
raped a lot more in the song, but he stuck to the groove, which i think is a
lot better musically than playing 43758 notes all the time.

interesting song form. if you're scoring at home, i figured it out to be the
    following:
     a-b-a-b-c-c'-c"-a(solo1)-d-d'-e(solo2)-e'(modulation)-e"(modulation 2)-c"-f
(yngwie, solo3)-g-a-b-b'(end tag into "voices"). i love the e section, which
comes almost exactly at 3:05.....in the key of b...that section in itself
could have been another song. one of petrucci's most lyrical solos, great use
of different textures by messrs. moor and petrucci- esp. jp, who goes from
his sweet fat blues tone into this guitar tone (approx. 4:05), that sounds
like glass, if you know what i mean....really sweet. yeah...

and then we end up on side 2 of "rising force"...what's up with that,
johnny-boy?? i usually don't mind skipping that section of the song. but it
also adds up nicely when the beginning is re-introduced and lead neatly into
    voices......i like this song. it's a well-done piece.

and this just in- leiann rimes just won the "best new artist" grammy!!!!!!!
long live america, and thanks to naras (nat. assoc. of recording artists).

    anyway, onto "voices".
    b) so, after this well-done instrumental, here we are, thrown into a room
full of voices (what a pun!). again, really good, soft, intro.....a very
important thing i wish more composers and bands would learn is the importance
of dynamics........ahh....you have to contrast....all loud hurts my
head........all soft makes me puke.....you need flashes of both, and all
    in-between....

hey- i just described the beginning of this song!

really strong lyrics. haunting. "sex is death, death is sex- says it right
here on my crucifix." wow...wondering if jp was listening to tori or
    something when he wrote this.

sonics- the dynamics are like a tease.....building up ever so
    slowly....leading us...ever so gradually, into the 1st chorus....well done.
they do this song so well live, esp. when they slow it down a
notch.....,makes the song even more haunting.

so last time i wrote, i said "gee, james ain't screaming." what an asshole!
it would be safe to state that there's some "loudly belted" parts on this
    song.

    mid-section........interesting samples and voices...anyone know who's
responsible for them? i'm guessing it was kevin or porntoy. speaking of porn,
LEIANN RIMES! no, portnoy, i mean- again, really laid back....he's not
strutting his stuff too much....."should i turn on OVULATION- these demons in
    my head tell me to."

i'm kind of at a loss to say more, really. i mean, this song is so epic. it's
just really everything you can imagine a 20 minute rock piece can contain.
the bombastic guitar solo, the great lyrics, the wonderdful textures. this is
just really one of those songs you just can't really talk too much about. the
last thing i'll say about it is just how incredible the end of the song is,
at least the part where james finished singing.....i get this feeling of a
great release of sorts. it's like, FINALLY, it's over. not that i like it's
over, but it's like "we've gotten to the holy grail."

    c) the silent man. the autobiography of john myung
i hate this song. really. i mean, i understand i think why it's there. i
think it serves as an afterthought (at least musically), and probably
lyrically. this is a taste issue to me. i've just sat through almost 19
minutes of explosive rock...i know, i know, "but they're using dynamics
again, wild koba. you're a douchbag if you hate this song because it's a
change of pace and texture." well, i think of it as sitting thru 2 hours of
great sex (i mean, i'm a goon, what do I know about sex??), and then getting
the worst blow job in your life right after it. what dt did to this song
live, particularly during the 95 christmas shows was fascinating. it was so
great to see them venture more creatively by using a thicker arrangement,
section extensions (good job derek!) and other things.....this song as it is
on the album just turns me off.

ok, enough, this took way too long.....i'll be hitting mirror and lie next.
please, more comments and stuff.......tell me i'm an asshole, even. that
    turns me on. thanks.

    ytsegoon

            Hi all,

I don't know what happened, so I don't know if I should say anything..
but.. When I e-mailed the Jam a WHILE ago asking where I could get "To
Live Forever" and "Eve", a few people replied, but Stan offered to trade
me for the singles that the respective songs were on. I said I had
nothing to trade, but I would buy them. He said forget it, send him a
100 minute tape and he'd fill it with cool stuff. So I sent it to him,
and I got back the singles, a ton of live stuff, including a bootleg of
the "Please Don't Go" version of ACOS (which, I must say, I like better
than the recorded version) and other cool stuff.
So.. take this however you want, I just don't see why he's being bashed.

    Hi there!
    Just in case anyone's interested:
German Rock Hard Magazine had its annual reader's poll once again and it even
had a bit of the old DTC...
In the category "Favourite Band" the guys reached position 15, in the
category "Favourite Musician" Mike Portnoy's on position 23 and John Petrucci
on 29 and even though they didn't play a single (non-clinic) show in Germany
last year, they reached position 41 in the category "Best Liveband".
Considering that it was a pretty quiet year those results aren't too bad, I
    think...

Wow, is all I have to say about this disc! I got a prerelease CD from Metal
Blade and it is great. I am only on my second listen and I can already tell this
is going to be one my favorite Fates CDs... One 55 minute song (although the CD
is divided into 12 tracks) that combines prog-metal, traditional Fates flavoring
(a la Paralells), a little industrial, some atmospheric nuances (nice keyboard
stuff from Kevin Moore) and of Jim Matheos' compositional skills, make this a
really ambitious project for the band. I'll post a more in depth review after a
few more listens, this is definately an album that sucks you in and grabs your
attention... The Cd is scheduled to be released on April 22nd... Stay tuned here
and on my Fates web page (will be updated in the next few days) for more info on
    the new album....

    so where do we begin
and what else can we say
when the lines are all drawn
    what should we do today

Hello fellow Ytsejammers. I would like this time to vent to all of you
because brethren can usually relate. Anyway, last night I was driving
home from class. I usually just jam my entire RUSH/DT collection in the
car, but for once I thought I would give the radio a chance....again.....
As the Michigan Ytsejammers can attest to for me, the WRIF is supposed to
be Detroit's rock station. Well, when I was in high school they were at
least. All I heard was AlternaCRAP (IMO) and so decided to call the station.
The DJ answers and I politely asked her why they never play DT. Afterall,
the WRIF paints a slogan saying "WRIF ROCKS DETROIT." Uh-huh......
Her fucking response was, and I quote, "Eww....they're old. I don't think
we even have any DT in the station." Eww? Excuse me you fucking princess,
Eww? So I kindly responded by saying the WRIF has become a haven for MTV
standard, untalented music. Then I hung up. The nerve of that wench!
    Argh!

Please, any fellow Michigan Ytsejammers, I urge you to call the WRIF and
bitch them out. Let's (as few of us as there is) give that cocky, full
of shit station a swift kick in the ass. They have no tact and have lost
my "viewership" for good. WRIF ROCKS NOTHING.

Well, that's a *little* bit more information than I needed, but go
    right ahead. :-)

To tell the truth, I want to hear neither of those albums on the
next. That would be a kind of déjà vu in that case. Been there, done
that, why bother doing it all over again?

Something new... Why not? I will definitely buy it and I hope I won't
hear music that's already been done and beat to death previously.

    >It's good to see someone else was watching this, and drawing the same

    >there right now, so we can't play it" irritates me no end.
Ditto. Does anybody remember when radio was cool and the DJs could
actually choose what they wanted to play? A DJ would get a hold of
some new music and say, "This is like nothing else out there, so I am
going to barracade myself in the studio and play it nonstop until
somebody signs these guys!"... <G>... I have heard some great stuff
on the local station here in Tucson....at 2am... The two DJs that were
working one night had borrow A Change of Seasons from a friend to
bring in and play. They played all of the covers (even The Big Medly),
and were even going to play the title track (although I didn't listen
that long)... Unfortunately, they said that the station would never
play any of these during regular hours, even though they got a ton of
great feedback about it.... The listeners are out there, why can't
the program managers at these stations take a risk once in a while and
play something 'new'? I think the internet may be the last place that
new talent can actually get any exposure anymore...

The biggest reason being, I think, is that the people who actually
play the music, MTV, the radio stations, and whomever else, have the
monopoly on today's music. MTV most of all. But, I've also noticed
that MTV doesn't play videos anymore (at least I haven't seen one for
about 3 months of flipping past it with the remote).

If you watched turning point, you'd see all of the things that record
companies do in order to get radio stations to play their music.
They try to bribe them with food and rare collectables. It's a
    shame.

It also talked about what a record co. will try to do to sell their
band. Bands can't write music their own way anymore, so if
Queensryche or DT doesn't sound the way you think they should, it
makes me wonder if it wasn't a commandment from the rec co. execs who
told them to write stuff that is like what's out there now. When
bands like Queensryche who had moderate sales on their 1st 3 albums
comes out with a triple platinum album like Empire, the rec. co.
thinks they can do it again. When QR didn't, the record company
tells them to write something that will appeal to the new generation
of listeners, even though QR doesn't want to.. Take a reference from
the show as to what happened to Peter Frampton. Look at Metallica.
It makes me wonder if they actually enjoy the change in their
lifestyles they had to make after making Load. They're different
now. They don't seem to be the same band I enjoyed listening to from
    the black album on back.

This is just a royally disappointing time we live in right now, when
you just want your music to be heard, and no one will help you find
    an audience.
