    Greetings ye 'jamanoids...

Today CDNow was kind enough to ship me several discs I'd been wanting for
some time. Nevermore's _Politics of Ecstasy_, Lemur Voice's _Insights_, and
Helstar's _Nosferatu_. All recommendations from jammers, so I get to
inflict my brief reviews on you. :)

Helstar: Good music, old sound. To be expected I suppose, since it's from
'89. Guitar work is excellent and the vocalist was a genuine surprise. Many
metal bands from that time period seemed to feature a vocalist who strained
to hit high notes. Rivera doesn't strain, he sounds natural and is actually
quite good. Not to mention the coolness of the concept album. Not bad at all!

Nevermore: Not what I was expecting. Prog metal, but this is HEAVY prog
metal. I'd liken them to Pantera with better vocals and time changes all
over the place. :) Heavy, heavy sound, but quite good. I'll have to get
used to this one, I think.

Lemur Voice: Saved the best for last. This album, after just one listen,
has quickly shot to the top of my favourites list. I can tell it's going to
get heavy play. Seldom before has a band so captured my imagination and my
interest. Excellent prog-rock compositions, superior playing from
everybody, and keyboards that are not only actually audible (something many
bands seem to have trouble with), but play a primary role. As they should.
:) This is really an excellent album from a terrifically talented band.
Marcel, you and your bandmates have a new fan(atic)!

DT stuph: Am I the only one who finds it just a little bit unnerving that
Derek is still in Ethyl Mertz? I know he doesn't spend a lot of time with
them, but there's something that makes me nervous about a guy who divides
his time between two bands. It makes me worry that he doesn't want to
devote himself fully to either, though I expect I'm probably wrong about
    this.

Also, to throw in my $.59 (inflation, ya know) about the snare in ACoS: I
think it sounds fine. Generally I prefer a more powerful snare sound, but I
think the sharp *crack* heard in this song fits it perfectly. Contrasts
nicely with the heaviness of the bass and guitar (and the organ sounds,
    too, sometimes).

Quick note to Rip: The local Kroger has a recording of cows mooing hooked
up to the milk fridge. When you open the doors to grab a gallon or two, the
cows moo at you. Kind of kewl....:)

    Cheers,
    Phil

The Queen tribute is a very interesting one. Apart from JlB and JP there's also Ted Nugent and Lemmy of Motorhead doing a song, and Yngwie Malmsteen, and members of Kiss, it's pretty cool. Only two songs sound bad, and those are the ones that a bloke called Paul Shortino sings on. He sucks pre-cambrian rock. Robin McAulay sings a really good "I Want it All", Jeff Scott Soto and Mark Boals sing some stuff, JLB sings Sheer Heart Attack, and JP plays guitar on Another One Bites the Dust. Other musicians include Rudy Sarzo, Aldridge, MArty Friedman, Jake E. Lee, Carmine Appice, Bruce "Racer X" Bouillet and just about all of Anthrax do "It's Late". One of the best tribute albums I have, after "Nativity in Black" (Sabbath tribute). -- /--------------------------------------------------------------\ | Richard Karsmakers cronos@worldaccess.nl | \--------------------------------------------------------------/ C.R.I.M.E. I simpathize with you cause I know what it is like to have a simple little dream like seeing DT in concert shattered because we live in the boonies. I like in Alaska and concerts up here are as rare as 70 degree weather. I guess you take the good with the bad.

That irritated me too, more so because to my ears, the music of that band didn't sound all that different from much of what's out there now. Certainly not as out of the mainstream as a lot of the bands talked about here, DT included. No wonder prog and related bands have no chance of getting air time in this business. :(

Interesting thought (maybe)...If Dream Theater did leave Elektra and go to CMC, you really wouldn't have to hunt around for the album because so many people would buy it. And they wouldn't really need to be exposed because they already have a lot of success. Just a thought...maybe just stupidity!]

Yeah, I was on AOL for that chat. I joined up for one night, just because of that. :) Sad to say, but LaBrie didn't make it. I was chatting alot with the guy in charge of getting all the guys on, and he said that LaBrie had AOL on a PC disk, but was using a Mac laptop. So, needless to say, it didn't work. He had been in phone contact with LaBrie several times that night, and said that James was really sorry that he wasn't able to make it.

Yes, i DO have a transcript of the entire conversation with the other folx. I remember Joey Vera, Bruce Kulick, Jeff Scott Soto being, on there. I didn't pay much attention to the channel, but it is logged. I was too busy chatting with the guy in charge...I even got him to sign the DT petition!!! :) So, I guess if anyone wants the log of that chat, e-mail me, and I'll send it to you.

I just picked up the Dragon Attack CD yesterday....Whoooahhh....this cd rocks!! I havn't stopped listening to it since I bought it. LaBrie does 2 songs, Petrucci does one. I just love it. I'm not even that much of a queen fan, but this cd is definately worth the money!

Here's what I attempted to post.

    >Anybody else think they're just getting out of the country at that time to >avoid taxes? :) Queen did exactly the same thing. 1978 was their "year out;" they spent most of the year outside the UK so they didn't have to pay taxes. They even moved the recording of the _Jazz_ album from Switzerland to France so they didn't have to pay taxes in Switzerland. More power to both bands; taxes are too damn high anyway.

It's also on part two of the "Silent Lucidity" import single. Incidentally, I've heard from at least two sources that the new single "Sign of the Times" sounds a lot like "Last Time In Paris." So if you like "Last Time In Paris," check out "Sign of the Times."

Hrm. Mebbe the reason that TBA sold so much was because it was a good album. I admit it was the one that started me into Metallica and I still like it alot, even thought my now favorite is, and probably always will be, Master of Puppets. Still, I really think Load is not 'tallica's style. I've listened to it a couple of times and the only song I liked was (of course) Until it Sleeps. I think mebbe it's cuz they ripped it off of an old 80s song. I'm still trying to figure out which one, but I know I've heard it before. I think it was by The Police.

If anyone else has discovered which song, lemme know. i've been struggling with this sonce I first heard the song.

    Hey gang -

You can find a new Queensryche soundbite in WAV format (for "Sign Of the Times") at http://www.mcs.net/~ryche/ The sample is a little over 30 seconds. I think it's kinda cool... yet again, they're sounding totally different! You can also find a track listing of "Hear In the Now Frontier" right here.

Well, I looked it up. I have a recording of Savatage live off of Z-Rock dated 8/8/93. It was recorded on the "Edge Of Thorns" tour. Is this the show people are looking for? The track listing: Lights Out, He Carves His Stone, Skraggy's Tomb, Conversation Piece, Ghost In the Ruins, She's In Love, Edge Of Thorns, Hall Of the Mountain King. About 40 minutes.

Just picked up "Dragon Attack". Totally kix ass! Awesome stuff... LaBrie sounds great on his 2 tracks. JP is a little more laid back on "AOBTD", but at times his true colors show. Another really cool tribute I just picked up is the Magna Carta "Yes" tribute. Very much enjoy this one... highly recommended!

Hey, stop picking on Loaf! :) I love his material... very intense stuff!

Oh yeah, one other thing. Has anyone heard of a Dream Theater CD titled (something like) "Guitar Talking / Acoustic + Clinic"? I've seen it on a "have" list, but I've never personally seen it advertised nor heard anything about it. Does anyone know how it is, and more importantly, where I can get my grubby little mits on a CD copy? Any help would be greatly appreciated. You can E-Mail me privately, if you'd like, or just post to the Jam.

Thanks to all! Laterz... Matt T.

It is one of Metallicas worst albums (right uo there with TBA) It is one of the biggest dissapointments I have ever heard. I was looking forward to another "real" Metallica album following in the footsteps of Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning, and And Justice for All. Hopefully at the concert at MSG on 3/10 they will play none of their new music (which can't suck becaus eits Metallica) but will play their old music (which really kicks ass!!!!)

Did any jammers go to the Throughbred Guitar Show in Clearwater, FL on Saturday? I saw someone wearing an Awake shirt. The show was unbelievable. It lasted from 10 AM to 10:30 PM. The store is 90,000 sq. ft. or 3 guitar centers put together. The building is a historical site so it looks like a the Sistine (sp) Chapel inside. It has columns, arches, wall paintings etc. IF YOU ARE IN THE AREA, CHECK OUT THE STORE YOU WILL BE IN MUSICIANS HEAVEN. They had people like John Christ (who picks as good as JP), Albert Lee and many other awesome players you have never heard of but are awesome. At the end they had an acoustic show where 5 players played songs. Then they had a good blues band called Greg Koch band play and during their set Albert Lee jammed with them. Then they had the electric jam featuring drummer Rod Morgenstein, Oteil Burbridge on bass, Alex Gregory a blazing neo-classical electric mandolin player and Yngwie Malmsteen. The duels between Malmsteen and Gregory were incredible. Following that was another band that played some long and cool Zeppelin and Hendrix covers. Guys if you get a chance check out Preston Reed an over the top acoustic player, Badi Assad a classical guitarist and rhyhtmic singer, Mindwalk a jazz band, Bass Extremes featuring Victor Wooten and Steve Bailey. All these people played and blew me away. While there I picked up a copy of the DT ppv show and I am very impressed by DS's keyboard playing. I also have a quality video copy of the first date of the Rush Test for Echo tour. If your interested in a trade, e-mail me.

to those of you who believe Metallica has sold-out,

i have heard this over and over and i even believed it for a while, that is until i went into my video library and dug out "Cliff 'em All" in which Cliff Burton said "We do what we want to do, and if that's called selling out then...whatever." This opened my eyes to the fact that they have as much right as anyone else to change their music if they feel like it. Now, does this mean i like Load? No, i think it's definately their worst album, but still a HELL of alot better than some of the other shit out there, and i respect their desire to write different types of music if they please (as long as they don't start using keyboards).

And to any of you that don't think they're Heavy Metal anymore, just go to one of their concerts on this tour, i just saw them on friday and it made me regain all my respect for them.

    Thank you

    D....you are funny as hell.

Well...I bought the new Live album the day that it came out. Needless to say, it was a letdown. It lacks energy, and the songs dont seem to have a point to them. Mental Jewelry made its points very well....so much so as you could justifiably (sp?) call it preachy. Throwing Copper had songs with messages in them such as the fan/band relationship(Selling the Drama), Bureacratic leadership(Pillar of Davidson), but lacked the preachy air that MJ had, but added aggression and anger to the music. The lyrics on Secret Samadhi sound like they were written by Bush ("everybody's here, puke stinks like beer, this could be a city, this could be a graveyard, you stole my idea") and the songs on the most part are slow and lack energy. This was a major letdown for me since I have been listening to Live since the beginning and it is a shame to see the success get in the way of their creativity. This leads me to the next item. I had the opportunity to see them live the other night at the Beacon Theater in NY. This show was equally a letdown. Since they played a lot of new stuff, the show was slow and lacked energy. They only played one song off of MJ. There are some aggressive songs on the new album (Unsheathed, Herophychodreamer, Lakini's Juice) but even those were lost in the mix of the slow stuff. I will admit that I Alone rocked hard. They didnt play Selling the Drama which was a major letdown since it was one of my favorite songs. Ultimately I left the show dissappointed.

The Jam: I look at the lack of DT content this way.....if you sat all of the people who post to the jam in a room and said that they could only talk about DT and didnt supply them with any new material to discuss....I think the conversation would last about one day. So the lack of content is something that will have to be dealt with until the new material comes out. (I know Im late in dicussing this, but it is a topic that crops up every-so-often. Which leads me to:

The new album: Living on Long Island has gigven me the opportunity to see DT a lot more than some on the list (Im not bragging, just pointing out fact). So I am happy that the European jammers will get the chance to see the band and hear the new material. But there is a bad side, these shows are slated for April, that means that the band wont get into the studio until early May at best. This is if all problems are worked out by the time they get back. My guess is that we wont see the new album until very late this year....or even early next year. I think we are in for a long wait on this one.

The new album II: A thought occoured to me last night on IRC. DT is having so much trouble getting into the studio. Awake sold OK...not as good as I&W.....but good none-the-less. Concidering this..we all better hope that the new album does well...or these problems are going to seem like childs play. Hopefully someone can shoot me down on this one.

Well....I think thats enough rambling for now....bye.
