Mike try listening to I&W and Awake again, specifically LTL and Scarred.
Then you tell me which track has the cymbals and smaller toms more audible.
I guess I'm saying I feel just the opposite of you. I&W is much more clearer

Try the above (I've only seen DT three times), because I sure can't hear MP's
"great drum sound" in the boots I have. At the concerts I've seen the drums have
varied in sound and tone which is par for the course if your just miking the drums.

Hello all jammers. First of alI id like to say that DreamTheater diserves an
award and that progressive rock should be recognized in all music awards.
Second I wanted to know if anyone has seen the new Mike Portnoy video
"Progressive Drumming"? and finally when the hell are the boys comming to
    California?

Go to http://www.subtlerage.com NOW! Listen to the samples. Buy First
    Impressions!!!

I just got the tape in the mail yesterday. I was amazed by the quality of
the recording/production, packaging, and most importantly, the music. Not
only does he have chops to burn, and a great melodic and compositional
sense, he writes from the heart, and as a result, the music is uniquely and
    undeniably Andrew Miller.

Don't buy the tape because I say so... don't buy it because Andrew Miller
says so... Buy it because you're a person who wants to hear great music.

Its true!! I was immediately reminded of that wacky 80's tune as
soon as I heard 'Until it Sleeps'!

Anyways, I will be severely disappointed if Queensryche has gone
semi-mainstreamish. I mean, I'll be REALLY pissed. I love QR almost as
much as I do DT, and It would really blow if there new album is a let
    down.
I kind of felt the same way about the new Rush album. Up until
TfE, I thought that band could do no wrong, and that everything they
released would be slick. When TfE was released, I was so disappointed
(on top of that shit they pulled with Working Man), that I dont really
get anything out of Rush's music anymore. Its sad, but like MAddy said,
when a band's 'experiment' turns out music that all sounds the same, I
feel like they're running in circles, and Im turning away. Thus, instead
of paying attention to the music that we all know they should be making,
they have chosen to become Status Seekers.:)
Well, that aside, can someone point me in the right direction to
find some Symphony X material? I've heard a lot of good about this band,
and I really want to check them out!

WOW! The jam never ceases to amaze me. "Strength In Numbers" is much more
blusey than their first (and IMHO superior) album. "Standing Alone" is
one of the best ballads of all time and the original isn't that much
different than one you're talking about (a couple extra background vocals
and acoustic guitar parts). Personally, I like the fist version better.
I'm pretty sure that the import you're talking about is "Take Out And
Served Up Live," a live & b-side collection with both singers (Danny
Vahgn, who left after "Strength In Numbers" and his replacement, former
lead singer for Tall Stories. Interestingly, Danny is now back in the
    band).

We're not talking instruments as a whole, just drums.

Why should the drum evolution stop at with just a
    > microphone on the drum.

It doesn't have to. You can add reverb, delay, etc.

If guitarists and keyboardists meddle with their sound
    > why not drums?

It's not like you CAN'T do it with drums, I just personally don't like it
as much. Here's why. The electric guitar and synthesizers are electric by
their nature. When you plug one of these into an amp, you're naturally
going to manipulate the signal in order to get any kind of sound (there
very fact that they are designed to be plugged in is a tip-off). That's
fine. But with drums, the signal, to me, sounds damn fine with just
microphone amplification. You're just enhancing an organic sound. But in
regards to drum triggers specifically, they distort the original sound to
a point that it detracts from what I like to call the "human"
factor...you know, variations in dynamics. Specifically, on "Metropolis",
for the life of me, I couldn't figure out what the hell Mike was doing
during the end of the instrumental section. But when I got a hold of a
boot and listened to it, it became easier to understand. Not to say that
I can play it, but at least a can hear what is going on.

A few on the list have expressed their dissaproval of the drum trigger
    > issue, I believe most of these people are jumping on the bandwagon. Well Mike P.
    > said it so it must be so. Hmmmmm. Maturity - I would bet I've played drums
    > longer than you have been on this earth.
    >
Probably a good bet. But the length of time one spends studying a subject
does not necessarily justify his viewpoint. As a drummer, I personally
don't like triggers. Maybe in sixty yeas I'll change my mind.

Not really. Christ is a hell of a player. He played Flight of the Bumblebee
with every note picked and at the same tempo as the classical version. He
showed the audience some chromatic warm up exercises close to what JP does.
He also can play many other styles than metal like blues, classical, and a
he has some prog. rock in him.

I'm sure all the jammers will give you the go-ahead on LV. I think the
first two tracks really shine in the album. It has the energy of I&W. The
rest of the songs have a Fates Warning slant to them. I haven't really
listened to the last few songs that well, but I can safely say this is a
    good disc.

Now, Magellan, you will get mixed comments. Lot of people hate them, some
people like them, some people think they are under-rated. Personally, I
think the band has flaws, but that just might be a matter of taste. I am
one of the people that like them. First and formost, the vocalist Trent
Garnder is hard to stomach or rather ear. His voice is just about likeable
as Geddy Lee. However, I think he is a under-rated keyboardist. He uses a
lot of different sounds, and is quite melodic. They use a drum machine
which sounds tinny in the mix, but is some pretty decent programming for a
prog band. Some of their songwriting can be a little too disjointed where
they start up a good progression, but ruin it with an abrupt part. I like
    some of their longer songs.

Magellan was one of the first prog-rock bands that I heard. I guess you can
catogorize them in the "neo-prog" camp with a harder rock sound. Compared
to other neo-groups (Cast, IQ, Arena) the Trent Gardner's keys are better
than the ones on these bands, IMO. I lot of people hear some Yes, Kansas,
Styx in their music, but I can't really make direct comparisons. I like
their first album better than their latest. The latest the has a more
    polished produced sound.

My advice: listen before you buy.

BTW, the new Magellan album "Test of Wills" is coming out in May 20. I have
a feeling this album is going to knock peoples sock's off, and say ,"Jeez,
this stuff rocks". According to Trent, the album will be heavy and feature
a live drummer. TG in an interview "brags" how great he is. Check on
Ghostland's page for the interview and latest news: http://ghostland.com

I was just curious..does the guitarist do play just like Yngwie or do better
than that. I just wondering because I usually feel that rehashed Yngwie get
really tiresome fast. Not that I don't like fast guitar. When I'm in the
mood, I like Joe Stump (may I say couple notches above Yngwie), Tony
MacAlpine. I just hope this is not just straight ahead metal with a
    standard apreggio solo in between.

They're not jump-around musicians, or what you might consider progressive
rock, but these guys have chops (man, I feel weird using that word, since
I'm not really a guitarist) that will make your jaw drop. Their playing and

Somebody asked about Magellan and Lemmer Voice. I have both bands CDs and
can tell you a lot since I do a prog rock show on a radio station.
Firstly, LV is vintage prog metal. NO bones about that. Magellan is
definitely different. Not heavy like DT, definitely very electronic,
although their song structure is definitely progressive. There are many
time changes and complex musical passages going on. You may get a little
turned off by the singer, but the music is good. The albums released now
don't have a human drummer, the drums are sequenced but sound real at
least in playing although I can tell that they are not acoustic drums.
IMpending Ascension is probably a good place to start with Magellan. Hope
this helps a little. I would recommend both bands. hands down.

I din't think the one I saw was a live one. May have been. I shoulda looked at it closer. It's been there for quite some time, though. As about Tall Stories, I found their album in the used bin, too, and still got it. Not as good as Tyketto, but still some real kewl stuff on it. I guess I'll have to go look at that CD again. :)

OK, are you talking about that song by (you know, that band?), who wrote the song, "Whip it?" The guys that wore the fire hydrants or whatever on their heads? Who was that... I know it. My mom's got it in her 80s collection... I dunno if that's the song I was thinking of. I'll have to dig through those tapes. Until it Sleeps reminds me of a gloomier 80s song, like something Prince wrote off of Purple Rain or Sting would've wrote with the Police. This is really buggin me. I'm gonna be going retro to figure this out. :)

Not the Tubes. Brother Cane ripped off one of their songs real bad. "Just don't fall in love.... She's a Beauty... She's a one in a million girl... She's a beauty..."

And then there's Eddie VH who rips off of his own songs when he runs out of ideas. :) I swear I was able sing the chorus part for Roundabout in a couple of the songs off of the last album. Ahh... well, I bought all of his albums so I shouldn't complain, it's still good. :)

Where was I? Oh, yeah retro. Gotta dig out all those old Scratch n' Sniff stickers. hope they still work... Posting too much today dammit. :( Disclaimer: All entries posted in this text are copyrighted by KorgX3 and are subject to applicable laws. I've heard of them. I remember hearing talk about them on Headbangers Ball eons ago.
