    >You follow me on this one? Can I clarify? Remember how this is a
    >progressive mailing list? And how Metallica is not a progressive band?

uh, last time I checked this was the Dream Theater list. It has mutated
into a prog or whatever length D-Man's nose hairs are list, but I don't
remember ever seeing in Skadz update or the welcome email where it says
this is a progressive list. Metallica isn't progressive, but I've seen
MANY different bands discussed here that are about as progressive as
Green Day, plus the Metallica list sucks more than any list I've ever
seen in my life. The list admin is a prick.

Hey Mike! Glad you're back! This is for you:

"I deny Jesus Christ, the Deceiver
and I abjure the Christian faith.
Holding in contempt all of it's works."

(lyrics to "The Oath" by Mercyful Fate")

I told you before you were booted over a year ago that if you kept this
crap up I'd find some Satanic shit to quote, and since I have all the
Mercyful Fate albums I didn't have to look very far.

    >Yeah, ND is cold and I have to work a little harded to find my
    >favorite CD's, but at least I breathe clean air, NEVER fight rush
    >hour traffic,

To have a rush hour you have to have PEOPLE.

    >pay very low living expenses and so on.

It's low rent because no one wants to live there.

    >Maybe you just don't apperciate the more subtle pleasures of life

Like watching grass grow, having sex with farm animals or marrying
my sister? No, I don't enjoy those things very much.

    >or maybe you couldn't handle the weather (not to say you're a WIMP or
    anything).

The Wheather didn't bother me much. It's amazing what you can put up
with when you have no choice.

    >As the for Miss Teen USA's comments: Oh well, I guess we should ALL
    >treasure the advice of some bleach-blond teenie-bopper...
    >I think you should reevaluate your choice or role models.

She's not a role model, I just thought it was interesting when I was
watching the show and that was her answer to what she wanted to do
    when she graduated.

When I lived there ND had a law where nothing could open Sundaysexcept
for gas stations, restaurants and food stores. People didn't want stores
open because Sunday was the sabbath. But when you reminded them that the
people at the restaurants they went to after church were working they
would say "Well, that's *different*. Of course it was, because the people
were waiting on them. Hipocrits. Believe me, for everything you say is a
plus I can give you two minus'. Watch the movie Fargo sometime. It mostly
takes place in Brainerd, but it holds true for anywhere in the rural
    midwest.

    Hey guys!

I agree with everyone that the Grammy's are a crock. After all, Led
Zeppelin never even got one. However, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones won
Best Pop Instrumental performance this year!! That's a huge win for
progressive music. Those of you who haven't heard them should check out
their "Live Art" album and prepare to be blown away!

Hey do any MN jammers know a record store in the Mpls. area where they
have a decent selection? This area is just so devoid of good music.

Oh I recently got the JP instructional video. I threw my guitar away
shortly after watching it. Jeepers that guy is fast! I ordered this
from CDNow and it took them about 4 weeks to get it to me for ~$35.

Oh there is an ad on television that has the traditional version of the
song "Heal My Soul" that is on Savatage's Streets. I can't remember
what the ad was for but it had Christopher Reeves in it and was for some
sort of charity thing I believe. Kinda cool to hear.

    Well that is all...

    1) Hello Jammers,
I'm an italian fan of The Band...
if anyone of you is interested I can record a CD bootleg called
"Skyway of nightmares" (live in Germany '93) and a VHS bootleg (PAL)
of the gig in Milan '95, perfect quality.
I'm interested in about everything you have, since I have nothing
    else!

    2) About DT concert in Italy. I heard here that IT WILL BE DONE in a
little town close to Milan (Gallarate I think) but it will be a mess
to find tickets.... I'm still waiting for a confirmation anyway. I'll
    let you know about it.

    3) Never heard a prog band called TIME MACHINE ? It's italian and
    really killer one!!!

How good are they? I love them. Imagine 3 guitarists (trained

I feel Metallica should be allowed to be discussed here. We shouldn't go
overboard on it though. DT did cover Damage so Metallica is in some
degree DT related if they aren't considered prog.

Whats with this ragging on Dokken and Whitesnake? They were definitely
the cream of the crop of the 80's hard rock bands. Dokken is still Rokkin
and I look forward to new Whitesnake. Both bands have or had some great
musicians in them at one time. Dokken with George Lynch and Jeff Pilson.
Whitesnake with Steve Vai, Adrian Vandenburg, John Sykes, Rudy Sarzo? I
wish there were more bands like these around today instead of all these
    alternative grunge annoying bands...

In some realted DT content I am taking the fiancee to see Phil Collins
(formerly of Genesis) tonight. I really have no clue what to expect. Will
he do Genesis songs or stick to his pop hits? He best play In the Air
    Tonight though....

This is the attitude that makes musicians homeless. Whenever a band makes a
change to their sound, all of their so-called fans go running around
screaming their heads off saying "I can't believe how much this sucks. .
.yadda, yadda", and sometimes won't even give it a second listen. Chris, I
am in no way attacking you, because I felt the same way you did about TfE
when I first heard it, but I have been a Rush fan for over 15 years, and I
knew I could find something about it that I did like. You are right in one
respect, Rush is *not* writing music *we* all know they should be making.
They never have, and I hope they continue to write music that makes *them*
    happy.

For all of you (and I know there's good number) who do nothing but
deride music that's not some sort of rock or classical, check out
"Rhyme & Reason," a new documentary on the roots and lifeline of rap.

Greg Kot (of the Chicago Tribune) reviewed the movie and said it was
amazing, "treating hip-hop not as a monolith but as a vibrant,
conflicted and often contradictory collection of voices....Often
portrayed as one-dimensional caricatures, here they are revealed as
         multi-faceted human beings.

I usually agree with what Kot writes. He's a very balanced music
critic. He finished his stroy by saying "And to those who hold the
music at arm's length, here's a reason to start paying attention."

Triggers are a great idea which needs to wait for technology to catch
up. They cannot capture all of the dynamics of the drummer. Just
listen to IAW. All of the snare hits sound exactly the same. Portnoy
has said that even notes he meant to be ghost (or grace) notes came
out the same volume as the normal hits (he was referring to the middle
of Metropolis specificially). My opinion on triggers is not based on
his word as gospel; I just happen to agree with him as a fellow
drummer. I don't see how a drummer interested in using dynamics in
their playing would even consider using triggers right now. Maybe in
10-20 years when they develop very sensitive drum pads.

    >Hmmmmm. Maturity - I would bet I've played drums longer than you have been on
    this earth.

Are you a betting man, Mike? :)

    >Back in the old days England used to tax the wealthiest citizens a >tax rate of 95%!!!! I shit you not; 95%. But the USA sucks, right >Graham? ;)

Yes! The USA sucks in this respect. Who is the ignorant person who wrote this? I don't want to know. I'm embarassed for you guy. We in the USA are taxed many times more that we were when we decided to leave England and build the USA and have "no taxation without respresentation". Sneak up on a history book. How much tax did you pay last year out of your salary? - a rhetorical question. A 35% tax rate... I guess you don't mind devoting more than a quarter or a third of your time working for people who can't say no to a balance budget and throw good money after bad. Are you still living with your parents?????

    WAKE UP!!!

I surprised D-man or Bafu (where are you?) didn't jump on this.....
