Hey - all of you old time Judas Priest fans might be interested in knowing
that Glenn Tipton has a new solo album out...this may be old news by now,
just passing it along...Sounds like he always did...usually uneventful until
the solo and not always that exciting then either...

Just turned on the KATT here in Oklahoma City, and they just started to
play "sign of the times", by Queensryche. It's fairly ordinary and a bit
more grungy than usual QR, but it's not too bad. I could get used to it.

You know, I was making a tape for a friend who I wanted to get into prog,
and I was contemplating asking the jam for suggestions, but I didn't. You
know why? This is going to get some insane number of replys! They are
going to be so varied, and so huge in number that you will never be able to
use them all. Plus so much of it is going to end up being stuff you don't
have and can't get. But I must say it took guts to ask.

It is going to be intersting to see what the responses are though...

As far as I can tell the entire idea of the Jam was to discuss prog music,

should be allowed to discuss it. (Oh, and my $0.18 cents worth is that
    Load is a great album)

Hello again. I am glad to see someone else bought Helstar's Nosferatu. I think it's ok, but it does sound dated. Good r. guitar work, and cool lyrics, etc., but it sorta reminds me of 80's Anthrax, like Spreading the Disease-era, only serious.

Pat, I want to know what you think of the Yngwie album. I always think that he and Dio should get together, toss (off) out the egos, and make some serious kick-ass material.

Metallica. Didn't Skadz say no more Load talk? (To the tune of "the song that never ends" : This is the thread that never dies...) Speaking of rip-offs, anyone see how Metallica ripped off Hades' "Rape of Persephone" for the main riff to "Enter Sandman?"

I actually listened to DT yesterday. First time in ages. I noticed that the liner notes to ACOS say the "new" album will be out in 96. Argh.

    GO WINGS!

I have a weird opinion of CMC. There's a band I like called Tyketto (I'll be really impressed if anyone here has heard of them). A couple of years ago they put out there second album called "Strength In Numbers." It was their first release on CMC and it was actually the first release by CMC that I bought. Well, the day it came out I of course went to the local record store (notice the singluar use- this is Vermont) to pick it up, only it wasn't there. I knew it had come out because I got a call from my friend about it. I became pissed at the realization that if this one store (Pure Pop) didn't have it, then odds were that I would not be able to get it anywhere in the entire state. In fact, I had to wait until I went back home to L.A. to get it at Tower. Here's my point: at the time, CMC's distribution sucked and the records were only being bought by major record chains (and reluctantly at that), thereby explaining my inability to get the record in Vermont. Now, CMC is obviously an independent label, so at first I thought that maybe the stores in Vermont don't buy independent releases, but a quick browse of the CD shelves proved me wrong (not only that, but I found that no CMC releases were being carried). So then I asked myself, "Okay, Richie...there must be a reason that the stores aren't buying CMC records." And this is what I came up with: as a quick survery of "Rolling Stone" magazine and MTV will tell you, there is a heavy stigma surrounding supposed "80s" bands or bands that play that particular style. As such, the major labels are looking for any excuse to dump these bands from their rosters (not because they aren't selling as much as their new signings because they were, but because it become amazingly uncool to have these bands) so as to attract new "talent." So that leaves a lot of bands, who have spent years cultivating an international fan base without a way to make records. Enter CMC. CMC was created to fill that void by signing established 80s bands. Presently, although CMC has joined with BMG since my Tyketto days, thus reducing to some degree their distribution problems, there are still several problems with the label. First, they don't sign any new acts, just established ones. I'm not really sure why they do this, because a lot of bands could benefit from it and the label could make a shitload of money doing it. In any case, they don't, so the stigma surrounding 80s bands has engulfed CMC as well, so that radio stations and stores hear that, say, Warrant is on CMC so they deem them to be dead (I've heard people in the music industry say that CMC should stand for Crappy Metal Cemetary). Secondly, their promotion of the acts they do have signed leaves a lot to be desired. It takes more than an add in Metal Edge to have a promotional campaign. Again, I'm not sure why they do this. I suppose their logic says that the people buying the new Dokken album are already die-hards and will plan their week around the album's release regardless of promotion, but that removes the band name from the public eye and seriously reduces the potential for the band to rise in popularity (as opposed to maintaining the current level). I can't tell you how many times people see the latest Warrant albums that I have on CMC and say, "I didn't know they were still around." This proves that their promotion is ineffective. The only thing about CMC that I do like is that they apparently give their artists complete artistic freedom and allows some of my favorite bands to continue making records. CMC still is a pretty new label and hasn't really earned the respect of say, Shrapnel, which also signs a specialized type of music. But time will tell. The moral of the story: no, I don't think DT should sign with CMC. It would not be a good career move. I would rather have them sign with a subsidiary of a major label like Eastwest was to Atlantic and then to Elektra, if the need arises. Worst case senario: they sign with Metal Blade. I've heard rumors that Poison (my favorite band) is considering signing to CMC. I hope it doesn't happen and they find someone else.

Hrm... I checked with my local distributor and he had 2 or 3 Blind Guardian CDs on his domestic list. You might check again. He said domestic distributors are slowly starting to pump old prog back into the system. I also got Marillion's Misplaced Childhood and will order Script for a Jester's Tear from him on domestic. Could this be a sign of things to come? (Hopefully). The prices are still kinda high for such old stuff, but is quite a bit cheaper than the imports. :)

Whaoh? I got that one. I swear the first time I heard Rescue me, I though JP was playing guitar. After listening to it a little farther it got all glammy, but I still like the album. :) Standing Alone rocks. Wish I'd heard the original version. I was just lucky enuff to find this in a used CD bin. There's an import of a newer one at the local shoppe, but it's like $30 and I'm not sure if I wanna dish out for it. It's always your freedom to disagree. Maturity has nothing to do with it though. I guess it's "not the best thing" to amplify or manipulate sound from instuments of Rock now? Why should the drum evolution stop at with just a microphone on the drum. If guitarists and keyboardists meddle with their sound why not drums? A few on the list have expressed their dissaproval of the drum trigger issue, I believe most of these people are jumping on the bandwagon. Well Mike P. said it so it must be so. Hmmmmm. Maturity - I would bet I've played drums longer than you have been on this earth.

Don't take this as an attack because it's not - just a "mature" view from a drummer who has explored both sides of this issue.

Well, that's a little uncalled for. ND is a beautiful state and I happen to like it here. I've lived in several places in the USA and each has its good and bad points. Yeah, ND is cold and I have to work a little harded to find my favorite CD's, but at least I breathe clean air, NEVER fight rush hour traffic, pay very low living expenses and so on. Maybe you just don't apperciate the more subtle pleasures of life or maybe you couldn't handle the weather (not to say you're a WIMP or anything). As the for Miss Teen USA's comments: Oh well, I guess we should ALL treasure the advice of some bleach-blond teenie-bopper bimbo-beauty-queen. I'm sure her 18 years of cheerleading and and giving the quarterback head under the bleachers have made her a fountain of wisdom! I think you should reevaluate your choice or role models.

Yeah, yeah, this doesn't belong on the jam. Oh well. The jam deserves to hear both sides of the arguement. Besides, a good argument keeps the jam from getting too boring!! Flame away, I've got my Nomex suit on.
