..and I have mixed feelings. Being one of those people who
like Promised Land a hell of a lot more than O:M or Rage for
Order I figured I'd fall in love with this album. Yesterday,
Scott Rockenfield, Geoff Tate, and Chris De Garmo did an
exclusive radio-promo thing here in Seattle and they played
several songs from the new album. Sonically, the sound is a bit
more raw than PL and smoother than O:M -- a balance that I quite
    liked.

The songs themselves had real interesting _parts_ and some neat grooves
here and there, but overall...they didn't do too much for me. The
solos were all really cool, and, since ny radio sucks a big fat
one, I couldn't really hear Geoff well enough to make out
any lyrics. I can say that he didn't hit a single high note out
of the six songs that they played, all lower register. I don't
know if the rest of the album is this way.

I did get the feeling that this is something that would grow
on me like Promised Land did, but first impressions from my
end give it 2 and 1/2 stars.

I should have taped it so I could hear the stuff again and write
    something more tangible. Blah.

Interesting you say that because Derek is now doing clinics himself. I know

They usually put out decent stuff, but the one (highly) annoying thing I've
noticed with the CDs I have from them (Dream Out Loud, Lords of Sound and
Rush's Run From the Fans) was that all 3 were mastered at a slower speed which
drives me insane!! I can't stand it - hope they got it together when they did
Mind Control (which I don't have).

    Hey Dream-Duderz -

Wassap? Just a quick question to yez this time 'round. I was just wondering
what really happened to Kevin Gilbert? I just joined the 'Jam after the Fix
gigs, and I think he died before then. I'm sure there was a lot on the Jam
about it at the time of his passing. I read about it in the DTIFC Fanzine,
but they really didn't go into the details of how he died. They mentioned
"tragically", if I remember correctly, and then someone made a reference in
the last 'Jam to the effect of him searching for his kicks, or something like
that. What's the scoop? Jus' wonderin'... BTW, today'z totally jammin' CD
iz... "Wrath Of God"! Thank you M.B.!!! Laterz... Matt T.

Where I've been, I've never heard any of the younger generation talk like
that. BTW, You can't tell me that you've heard people from Le Center (you
DO know where LeCenter is, don't you?) talk like that? Or Brooklyn
Park? Or Wayzata? Some of the movie has people from there, and they
seem to have the same stereotypical accent like everyone else...
I'll give you that some of the accent is similar. My
O's are elongated,(Minnesooooooota) but not that terrible, and I say "Ya" a
little, but not to the artform that the movie portrays it to be.

You must not get out of the city much, because The SW corner of
the state has some of the friendliest people I know. Which, conveniently,
is where I'm from. They must all turn to trolls or somethin' when I'm gone.

Yeah, I really dig the accents *really!*. Hell, I saw it for the

You know, I wish just one of my students liked DT. Just one. My life
would be so much easier. Hmm... maybe I'll make an assignment to listen
to DT, and write a one page paper on what it means for them.... *hmmmmmm*.

*whew* And now back to your regularly scheduled DT Content.

ObDT: I love it, go to a Metallica Concert, you find DT fans. Wore the
Fix For '96 shirt, and had at least 5 people come up to me before and
after the show telling me how cool the band was, and how they'd seen them
here, or there, or such thing. Dream Theater, it makes the world go
'round. I just hope they don't get too famous, and have to play in big
informal places like the Fleet Center, and such.

Kip's got a solo album that came out just yesterday (March 4) on Domo
Records called "This Conversation Feels Like A Dream." It's been out for
a while in Japan, but now it has finally seen the light of day in the
US. Also, Kip's wife died in a car accident. Rod plays drums on most of
the tracks. The music as a whole is supposed to be more adult
contemporary. I'll probably pick it up when I buy Aerosmith's new one on
March 18. As for Paul Taylor and Reb Beach, both have recently been
touring in Alice Cooper's band (so there's a little DT content). I think
Reb either has a solo CD out in Japan or is currently working on one.
Personally, I was never that big of a Winger fan. They were the type of
band that had a couple good songs on each album. As for Pull, the only
song I really liked was "Down Incognito."

If it's the same Ruggedcross I dealt with, they're cool. I got
Saviour Machine's new one, demo re-release, and their video for a
straight up trade of some old CDs I had here. Everything got here
promptly, and in good condition, etc. I'd give them a good rating,
but I've only dealt with them once.

I'm convinced that the only people who say crap like this are the ones

such relationships). Better check you Uncle Dad's blood line, your

Obviously, its been a while since you've been here. Those laws were
dropped years ago. Besides at some point, those same laws have existed
in every state. I suppose your sanctified part of the country has no
hypocrites (check your spelling again). Everyone there lives in perfect
peace and harmony, right? Where do you live? The state of Utopia?

WHOA! It's not bad enough you have to rip on ND, but then you really
step off the deep end and just stereotype everyone in the rural
mid-west!! The midwestern jammers may have just found a new person to
    loathe. TAG - you're it!

    Hi!!

Just wanted to tell all of you guys who know the band
Vanden Plas that there is a big bullshit going on...

Stephan Lill, the guitar player of VP, bought Petrucci's
home video and practiced that much, that he hurt his arms!
He isn't even able to hold a glass in his hands at the moment.
There is a rumor going 'round that he won't be able
to play guitar anymore!! I really hope that this rumor
doesn't turn into truth! This is even worse because
VP just started the recordings of their next album.

Maybe they should add a sign to Petrucci's video like
"Don't try too hard, you won't be able to do that..."
    or something. :))

    Bye.

    Bernd.

Are there any european jammers that can score me tickets? i'll be in amsterdam next week to pay for and collect the ticket for the melkweg show, and i'm planning on going to milan expressly for the show there, soi'd pay for it then. At the very least, can i call the venues myself for tickets? Any help would be appreciated.

I have a Metal Edge magazine where I think it says something about Kip having a solo album out shortly. It will be dedicated to the memory of his wife and I think the profits will benefit a charity in her name.

I hate to say it but I'm a little hesitant to try out the new Collective Soul album. I think (and I may be the only one) that their last album sucked big time. I liked Hints, Allegations And Things Left Unsaid though. As for the U2 influences, that scares me even more. I might check it out but I hope it sounds nothing like the last album.

Did anyone hear that Kip's longtime wife, Beatrice, died recently in a car accident? I just accidentally read it in Metal Edge. When did this happen? <The article didn't go into detail.> It did say however that Winger <at least, Kip> would have a release out "soon" and the some of the proceeds would be donated, in his wife's name, to a charity that helps runaways.

Yeah, I thought Pull was really good.

    DT:

I was driving our rehearsal accompanist for opera this semester back up to Peabody yesterday and I was listening to Awake <Innocence Faded/ Erotomania> and she asked, "who is this?" and I told her and she said that she doesn't like that kind of music, but that she liked what she heard. She's a doctoral student in piano at Peabody conservatory.

    Pretty cool...
