In regards to the reply from eckie@asu.edu, how dare you compare Master of
Puppets to Load and the Black Album? Both those albums were crap. LOAD
has absolutely no musical integrity and the black album contains no real
amount of balls and chunk. Both of those albums are just commercial
sellouts designed to produce radio-friendly songs that would yield them
the most profits. i think if Metallica continues to go in this direction
they will soon have to be called Poison. Al least Dream Theater continues
to put out great music no matter what.

For all those interested (however many that may be):
I read over the article in Metal Edge where it states, "Those who
have preconceived notions of Kip Winger will have them shattered with one
listen to his CD This Conversation Seems Like A Dream, due out Mar. 4."
Whoa - it's already out! Anyway, it goes on to say, "The music is
complex jazz-rock in an orchestral, atmospheric context, but with some
great melodic vocals, searing guitar by Andy Timmons, and compelling drum
rhythms by Winger bandmate Rod Morgenstein. Kip, who'll be in a video
for the ballad "How Far Will We Go," tragically lost his wife Beatrice in
a car accident a few months ago, but the album, dedicated to her memory
(in its second printing), is also a tribute to her talent as a backup
singer and a designer (she worked on the packaging). Kip plans to tour
Hard Rock Cafes across the country and donate part of the proceeds in
Beatrice's name to help runaway teens and the homeless."
Tour in Hard Rock Cafes? Has this been done before? The album
sounds interesting though. Anyone get it yet? Maybe I will if I can
    find it.
Sorry for the lack of DT material.

Kevin was a friend of mine. He was one of the most gifted musicians I've
known.. but he was a bit strange at the same time. While his death was
tragic, the way in which he died was not outrageous for him..

He died as a result of autoerotic asphyxiation. He had a leather strap
around his neck, attached to the headboard of his bed, wearing a black
skirt, and a black hood over his head.

I hadn't spoken with Kevin much after the blow-up with him and Sheryl Crow
as he became kind of a recluse in the music world.. I was really happy to
hear he was going to be involved in the new DT stuff, but alas.. it was
    not to be..

He will be missed.. Kinda ironic though.. running through my CD changer..
I came upon one of his CD's.. and during a random shuffle.. it played
"Song for a dead friend".. hmm.. Ironic. and sad..

OH my, what new threads will we have next? At least with the Vince/Jazz
issue, it was about music. With this its just North Dakota. zzz...
Enough already. Take it to private email. As far as Metallica not being

    I am in ESPN's fantasy baseball game. I have created a group(league)
called Dream Theater Fans. Anyone who wants to play can join up. I think
it is $29.95 for first timers and $19.95 for those who have an
    espnet.sportszone account.

    The link is:

I've played their Fantasy Football and am playing their Fantasy
Basketball game and once the season gets going it is a lot of fun. They
keep track of all the stats etc...

All transactions are free after the intial startup fee. You have until

I just happened to flip on Channel 68 Sports Night (local TV sports
    call-in show) and they're scrolling the day's college/pro scores. Got a
nice surprise to hear AC/DC in the background (or would that be the
foreground?). Funny to hear "You, shook me all night long" as the hockey
scores are going by :) And this is on UHF. Screw cable!! I think I'll
give the station a call and suggest a few other things.

Perhaps the AM radio market is a niche to be penetrated by prog rock...

I tend to approach the new stuff in a similar way. There's sure to be a
*sound* on there somewhere that I need to hear. It is very fulfilling
when it arrives. As someone who has listened to Rush for a little over
20 years, I can honestly say that I've also found something to enjoy all
along the way. For example, I happen to think The Color of Right is an
excellent song. The music isn't necessarily the most progressive song
that they have ever done in their lifetime, but *I* don't need it to be.
I imagine others can identify with the message in the lyrics and can
relate it directly to some experience in their lives. For me, it's the
combination of that and the feeling the sounds produce that make it such
    a powerful song...

I think it was Buster a while back who talked about the fact that
musicians are human. It's incredibly tough for most bands to continue to
follow up great album after great album. Many bands' first few albums
are their best. Aerosmith and Zep are two examples that immediately come
to mind. Nothing really horribly wrong with their later stuff. Their
first few were the ballz, though.

Taking up a couple points of Mr. Ptacek's:

    >couple jams have been all Metallica content, mostly fucknuts that are so

    >rules. Most of the jam doesn't care about Metallica.

Really? Is that so? Seems like Metallica keeps coming up as a thread. I
don't think Metallica is particularly progressive ("...And Justice For All"
isn't far off, in my opinion, though, and the Brad Tolinski (?) line about
"Yes on steroids" actually seems somewhat accurate to me), but they
certainly have an aggressive element to their music, as does Dream Theater.
They don't seem miles and miles apart, to be sure. Anyhow, I like
Metallica. A lot. Think "Load" is a good record, even. But everyone
pretty much knows how I feel about the subject at this point -- at least
anyone who gives a rat's ass.

    > In the signup letter it is expressed that content outside of Dream
    >Theater while in the same genre (I.E. Fates Warning, Shadow Gallery,

    >this is not a Metallica list, and that there are people replying to other
    >metallica fan's comments, when that should be done over private e mail.

A related query: Is the defining element of Dream Theater their progressive
tendencies or their aggressive tendencies? It seems to me that the
combination of the two is what makes for the uniqueness of the band. So Yes
would be as out of line in discussion here as Metallica, methinks. In any
event, I think both of them valid, and as long as the universe of this
mailing list orbits around our Beloved Band.

    >without liking every album.

Your argument here is strong, except for the fact that you refer to "selling
out," something I think bands actually do fairly rarely. Some erroneously
pointed fingers -- Metallica, Rush, Yes, Tull, Bad Religion, Pink Floyd,
Queensryche, and, again, out Beloved Band. It DOES happen...but I DON'T
think it happens nearly as often as people would suggest...

    >flawed irreconcilably, and I don't think there's anything wrong with not

Nor do I, but I'm not going to agree with your assessment of the album
either. I'd put it in the middle of the Rush canon, not as low as "Caress
of Steel," but not as high as "Hemispheres."

Yeah, I have to agree that the new Queensryche song SOTT does sound a little
reminiscent of something off Lillian Axe's Poetic Justice although, I think
SOTT sounds a little more grungy- more like something off Psychoschitzophrenia.

Serious? I know Petrucci is doing one that day, but didn't hear
anything about Derek. It'd be cool to see the two together.

My latest issue of Guitar For The Practicing Musician has a half-page
    article
on Reb Beach. He's been doing studio work in Nashville playing country
    music.
He said that country music has become a lot like 80's rock, and that
    they love
tapping. I got the impression he found a niche where he could continue
    to do
what he does best, and it pays the bills. Before Winger, he did a lot of
    studio
    work anyway.

He also mentions he'd rather be in a band again.

I know what you mean. The first time I saw the movie "A Bronx Tale" was
very shortly after I had moved up here to VT. It was cool in the respect
that my new friends realized I wasn't the only one up here who speaks
like that, but they would still give me shit for it now and then. :)

I think (and I may be the only one) that their last album sucked > big time. I liked Hints, Allegations And Things Left Unsaid though. As for

I hadn't heard much of Collective Soul when I saw them live. I had sort of enjoyed what I had heard on the radio, but it still seemed really sterile and overproduced. Then I saw them open for VH. Yuck. They stank. The five of them (or was it 6?) just stood there and played and sang. The music was totally devoid of passion, and sounded about as hospital-white as it did on the radio. After two songs, I'd had enough, and I stopped paying attention.

Richie assures me that the new album is different. It'll take a lot to sway me.

    > the U2 influences, that scares me even more. I might check it out but I hope

Well, that all depends on which U2 we're talking about - the rock band or the techno band.
