    Hello,
Yet again, the Jam has amazed me with it's resourcefulness.
Thanks to all who provided the Winger info, I think I'll take a look for
Kip's album. I kind of expected the lack of good responses for Pull. It's
a lot different from the other stuff. I love the first four songs, the
rest of the album is good IMHO.
Reb Beach is too good to be resting on his laurels, so I hope he
finds a new band or something. His was one of the best live guitar solos
I ever saw (even over Eddie, Satch, Vai). He played two and the one right
before Baptized by Fire (ITHOTY Tour) blew my mind. The rest of the show
(Essex Jct, VT) blew my eardrums out...:)
As for other prog: are any of the bands that people keep
recommending available at mainstream stores? I shop at CD World in New
Jersey which is comparable to a Sam Goody. I'm looking around for the
following: Superior, Spock's Beard, Lemur Voice, Altura. That's where I'm
starting at least. I only buy after I listen and my store has a 30 return
policy on all CDs, even opened ones. If anyone can give me some info on
this topic please do so by PRIVATE E-MAIL. Thanks again...

    Andrew

Some of the boots are recorded slower for the exception of the
newer ones (circa '94) or so. I've got Mind Control and it's full
tempo, as well as my NIN boot Children of the Night. Both are grade
    a IMHO.

I've been on for a while, but I don't post that often. Jeff E and I both work at the same computer lab at LTU, where actually a large amount of the employees here are DT fanatics. I don't have much else to do when I work than sit back and read the jam. I don't much care for WRIF anymore. I get really tired of hearing the same crap over and over again. Granted Mandatory Metallica is pretty cool, but that's not enough to make me listen to a radio station. I don't really listen to radio at all anymore because these stations need to play popular music to make money, and I don't find much of interest in popular music. People often ask questions like "Why don't they play more Fates Warning (or Lemur Voice, or whatever band with a scrap of talent you wanna put in there) on the radio?" The answer is that unfortunately there aren't enough people who listen to these bands for the stations to make money off of it. I understand that they are a business and when the money ceases to flow, they can no longer afford to remain in business. That Turning Point special made me really sad. I seriously wonder if these DJs actually like the music they play or if they are just another mindless drone of the music industry. They are afraid of anything new, and the crap that they play shows that. I can't believe that they are so afraid of new things, when some of the most successful breakouts were completely contradictory to the most popular trends of the time. Take Nirvana for example. I don't like Nirvana, but look at the trends that existed right before they broke. Guns 'N Roses, Poison, and Warrant were still kings of the hill when Nevermind came out. Do you Nirvana would have broke if they were singing songs like "Cherry Pie?" I would be able to stand to listen to the radio more if there wasn't such a sameness to most of it these days. And forget MTV. They died many years ago. They might be able to redeem themselves if M2 continues to play the variety of weird stuff I have been seeing on there. People are afraid of breaking the paradigm, but it seems like it is often a much better bet than sounding just like everything else. Another effect of all this is that mailing lists such as the jam are becoming more and more important in getting info on the kind of stuff that we want to hear. The fact of the matter is that DT is more of a global success. The music scene in America in the 90's has been really fucking pathetic. Europe and Japan are much more receptive to bands like DT. I wonder how well the next DT will do in America? For all we know they could be part of the "next big scene," but that probably won't happen because they "don't sound like everything else." (Thank god!) I play in a band myself, up in the Grand Rapids area. Grand Rapids has a particular sound, and if you don't fit that sound then it's really hard to break in that scene. (Just for reference, the GR sound is an endless horde of horrible Gin Blossom clones) We don't sound like DT or any prog rock, but we have a really heavy sound, so we don't blend well with the GR sound. In other words we have to work 20 times as much for about 1/10th the exposure because we choose to have our own sonic identity. Well that's enough of my ranting and raving. It's very important for everyone here to support new rock bands who don't fit in, such as Shadow Gallery and Lemur Voice. I've never heard Lemur Voice, but thanks to you guys I'm going to go out and buy it (as soon as my current lack of money subsides). Where else but these kind of mailing lists am I going to get info like that? As long as DT has legions of "underground" fanatics like us, then they should be well off. Later folks.

Hello everyone, My name is KAI, and some of you may remember me. I was on the 'jam a ways back (probably one of the first 40 subscribers), but I lost net access when I graduated. Well I'm back, and I have some catching up to do. Last I heard, WDATU was still just a thought - which I still don't have. One question: I heard a rumor that DT released a fan-club only CD of more tunes from the Ronnie Scotts show. Any truth to that? Anyway, glad to be back. BTW, when's the next album coming out?

    Later, KAI

If you liked "Hints..." you'll really like this. It basically is a balance between the song-oriented "Hints..." and the more riff-drivern second album. If you like Collective Soul, I can almost guarantee you'll like this. As for the U2 reference, I'm not a guitar player, but some of the choruses sound to me like early U2. But then, I don't know much U2 either. Don't let that throw you.

Oooooooo....tempting, but I'll let it go. BTW, if the new Queensryche sounds ANYTHING like Lillian Axe, I'll have to pick it up. Lillian Axe is one of my all-time favorite bands so any comparisons are a good thing to me.

I've heard a lot former hard rock musicians saying this. Anyone remember the band Keel? They were big around '86. Anyway, their singer now goes by the name Ronnie Lee Keel and is a country artist. Anyone else catch one of his songs on MTV's "It CAme From The 80s II?" The lyrics went "My horse is my Harely/ My gun's a guitar." Personally, I'd probably like newer country if it wasn't for the vocals.

I just got back from shopping at the local import store, and I saw some very interesting things there. First of all, I bought Veni Domine's "Material Sanctuary," which sounds sort of like Warning-era Tate fronting Candlemass so far. It may change. No, the singer isn't *that* good, but reminiscent. I also bought Seige's Even's (ick, double possessive) "Steps," to which I have yet to listen. I saw many things at the store which I have heard about on the jam, so if you are interested in buying any of this stuff, and you live in Maryland, I can steer you in the proper direction. I saw the Finneus Gauge CD. I saw some Vanden Plas CD. I saw a 12" of Crimson Glory's first album. Also a 12" of Fates Warning's "No Exit." There were other things...Lemur Voice's CD was there used for 10 bucks. That's about it.

Another note...this guy cracking on ND seems really bitter to me. Am I imagining things? Every place has its advantages and disadvantages. Enjoy the outdoors and clean air. Make your own fun. I grew up in Wisconsin, and everyone gives me shit about cows (hey rip) even though I grew up in a city. Cheese and Beer (repeat chorus) is all anyone thinks WI is about. That may be so, but there are plenty of things about WI, and by extension the midwest, which are positive. I live in a supposedly great cultural urban area (DC/Baltimore/Annapolis triangle), where everything (NY, Philly, etc) is nearby, but there are things that suck about this place, too. I guess the grass is always greener (or the blondes more sincere) for some people.

The Veni Domine doesn't sound so much like Candlemass anymore..though it *is* much more "doomy" than old rhyche. It's probably not fair to be making this comparison...

    Until the next time.

    GO WINGS!

I was ruminating a bit on this after the show last night. Metallica really is getting the cash flow in both ways nowadays. Make a slow album that appeals to the alterna-crowd. (I'll agree, it isn't an alternaalbum, but it is moreso than many other album they've made so far) Then they go out and throw out a loud, obnoxious show (which is quite good), not DT great, just good. You satisfy the label by making a shit album, but then you go on tour and play all your old stuff and punk stuff. The record company must just roll in the dough.

Well, I think it's not up to you say what is or what is not commercial. And, however, I think there's a big general misunderstanding about the word 'commercial'. It doesn't affect the overall quality of a product! Do you call commercial anything melodic? Anything that sells more than it should? Well, I think it's not easy to compose something with this intention, otherwise there would be a lot of rich stupid bands on this planet..... Just agree or not about the direction the band took. You're not forced to buy their records, and respect people who do it....

    > i think if Metallica continues to go in this direction > they will soon have to be called Poison. Al least Dream Theater continues > to put out great music no matter what. > > The Admiral has spoken!

If you let me speak (and I'm not an admiral..) I'd like to defend Poison if they'd ever need... I appreciate them. As much as I love Dream Theatre. Music is music... coins have usually two faces, isn't it?

PS. Do you even have an hi-fi system on your boat?????
