I just wanted to pass along an old review of Images And Words I have from
Circus magazine. I've had it for a while but I just think it goes to show
how narrow-minded music critics were even when grunge wasn't around. Here goes:

Dream Theater- Images And Words (ATCO) 3 stars out of 5

Blending keyboards and heavy guitars, Dream Theater combines the
adventurousness of Seventie's progressive rock with the bone-crunching slam
of heavy metal, creating a unique Yes-meets-Metallica hybrid. A cool idea,
but Dream Theater leaves the task somewhat unfulfilled. You can't help but
marvel at the bands dexterity and many of the instrumental excursions on
this album (the New York-based bands second) do provide some enjoyable
moments. But like a lot of progressive bands, Dream Theater's music seems to
come more from the head rather than the gut, making this an interesting
    though unthrilling album.

My comments: Unthrilling? What the hell is this guy talking about.
Obviously, he barely listened to the album, if he did at all. The music
comes from the head? This guy did not listen to Metropolis or Learning To
Live apparently. If he did, he'd know the music comes directly from their
soul and not from their head. I think this whole review this guy did really
    SUCKS.

Sorry it took so long for me to get this posted, but at long last, here's
    chapter 2!

If anyone has strong objections to me posting this to the list, let me know.

    Enjoy!

    Metropolis
    Part 2

    "There's no more freedom.
The both of you will be confined to this mind.

I was told there's a miracle for each day that I try.
I was told there's a new love that's born for each one that has died.
I was told there'll be no one to call on when I feel alone and afraid.
I was told, 'If you dream of the next world, you'll find yourself swimming in a
    lake of fire.'"

When Paul came to, he had a hard time seeing around him. Everything looked
black. Everywhere he looked was black.

"I must be dead. I must be in hell," he thought to himself.

Then, he turned around, and he saw a small figure staring at him.

"Good! You're awake!" the little midget said to him.

Paul was taken aback by this little man. "Who are you? What am I doing here?
Are you the one that dragged me off the street?"

"Oh, so many questions, so little time! But we have all the time in the world!
     We can wait for that!"

    "Am I dead?"

    "Well, yes, and no."

Paul was exasperated. "What does that mean?"

"Well, you are dead, but not like most people are dead. Most people, when they
die, go to either heaven or hell, depending on how they lived their life.
However, with this war, we needed someone who could help us resolve it. We
    chose you."

Paul, furious, screamed, "You had me killed? I had a life, dammit! You took
    that away from me!"

In the distance, another voice said, "We must apologize, we were rather
desperate. But then again, our little friend has a habit of being reckless."

The small man said, "Well, it isn't exactly my fault, Sleeper! I did ask you
to wake up to help, but you wouldn't do it!"

Paul looked over to see an old man, but not too old, lying on a sort of loft.
"You know that I will only awaken when the chosen one has arrived. And thanks
to you, he has. You should have been more careful."

    The dwarf just humphed.

Paul, totally exasperated, said, "So, who are you?"

The dwarf smiled. "I am he that brings all joy to mankind. I am the paragon
of happiness." He gave the last phrase a magical flavor. "I am the source of
    miracles."

Sleeper, unimpressed, said, "Oh, be quiet. You haven't exactly impressed
    everyone."

"Oh, but wait until our friend finds out that he has a purpose!"

Paul, still irked, turned to Sleeper and said, "And you?"

"I have slept for centuries awaiting the time when I will be needed again. I
am the keeper of wisdom, and it will be my duty to aid you in your task."

Paul, even more agitated, said, "Wait a minute, what task?"

"We have selected you to become one of us in our quest to bring goodness back
to the city. You are now the spirit of Metropolis, the guardian of the city
and all its majesty. You must bring it back to its former glory."

"What!? Me!? What if I don't want to do this?"

"Then, you will go to the land of darkness and misery, where all wicked souls
    go."

"Wait a minute, I am not wicked!"

"You would be, if you were to refuse a request to help when you are needed."

At this point, Paul resigned himself. "All right, what do I have to do?"

"There are three main forces of life that everyone goes through. Three
'dances,' if you will. These three are different for each person, and affect
how the course of their life progresses. The first of those for you is Death,
    which you have already experienced."

"Okay, so what are the other two?"

"You will discover those in time, as you learn more about how you will solve
the problem with which you have been presented. This knowledge will aid you in
    your quest."

"So, what do I do now?"

"Just wait and observe. You will know when the time is right."

    ---

Dan was with Jennifer going through Paul's stuff, remembering their brother and partner who had just been slain. It was a hard time for both of them.

Jennifer, deciding to break the macabre silence, said, "Hey, you want to go out for coffee?"

    "No, that's okay."

"You sure? It would do you some good to get out of the house."

"No, I'm all right. But if you want to go on ahead, Jen, I'l meet you there."

    "Okay."

Jen went out to her car and left. But she did not go to the coffee house. She went to a back alley near some tall buildings on the north side of town. This back alley was one that very few people knew about, and no one paid attention to. Which is what made it perfect.

She turned the corner behind the abandoned apartment building and drove down into the below-ground garage. The rest of the building was falling apart, but this was in mint condition. Hardly anyone used this part of the building since it was so hard to get cars. And the restructuring of the city 20 years ago made it so the garage entrance was away from the street instead of facing it, which made it even more perfect.

She parked her car among all the other cars and motorcycles and went out. She walked amongst the fires and the people huddled next to them and found the tightly guarded tent. Surprisingly, the largely built guards let this small woman through.ed inside and found a single man lying on a large bed with several attendants and several attractive women lying beside him.

Upon seeing her, he said, "So, how did it go?"

Somberly, Jennifer replied, "My brother's dead."

    "I'm sorry."

"You said you weren't going to hurt anybody this time."

"Hey, the cops were coming down on us. They started it."

    "My brother was a cop."

This did not make him very happy. "You were related to a cop? And you didn't tell me?"

Oh, shit. Now she had to come up with an answer. "I was afraid. I was afraid that if the cops found me out they'd come for me. I was afraid that if you found out about Paul, you'd come for him. I'm sorry, I didn't know what else to do."

"This omission of information is a security risk to us all. You should have told us."

    "I'm sorry."

"Did he ever see you some up here? Did he ever suspect that you were part of us?"

"No. I made sure that I disguised my trips as something else. Usually I just told him that I was going out for a drive. He knew I liked to drive."

"Good. Anything else important that you have to tell us?"

    "No."

    "Good. You may go."

Jennifer turned to leave, but she was interrupted just as she was about to go.

"Are there any other cops that know you?"

Now she really had a tough decision. Did she betray her true love, or did she risk her own life to protect him? In a split second decision, she said, "Yes, my fiancé was Paul's partner."

I heard it also, Queensryche can now be classified under grunge/alternative, The slower acoustic part is not bad, the rest is nothing but shitty grunge. Fuck*n chickens.

For those who are in Progressive rock/metal bands, please don't give up, stay true to yourselves, and play the music you love. The shit on the radio will pass, prog will soon dominate.

Also, for those who can't wait for the new Fates, try Vauxdvihl's "to dimension logic". It's an excellent album, reminds me of "perfect symmetry". You will not be dissapointed.

Since this seems to be the topic of discussion, I'll throw down a list of songs that move me, and I'll try not to make the list so long that it crashes my computer when I try to mail it.

My All time favorite song is:

    Duran Duran-Save A Prayer

I absolutely fell in love with this song the first time I heard it-Only one of two songs I can say that about. It has absolute pure love in its harmony, in its lyrics, and in Simon's voice. It is the absolute best song of all time.

    Other songs, listed by band

DT:Pull Me Under, Surrounded, Metropolis, Wait For Sleep, Lie, Lifting Shadows, Space-Dye Vest

QR-Roads to Madness, Take Hold, Walk In the Shadows, I Will Remember, Eyes of a Stranger, Best I Can, Silent Lucidity

Depeche Mode-A Question of Lust, Enjoy the Silence, Walking In My Shoes, Rush, One Caress

    FW-Monument, 11th Hour

Genesis-Dancing With the Moonlit Knight, Snowbound Turn It On Again, Man on the Corner Mama, Home By the Sea, Domino, No Son of Mine

East 17-Thunder(Anyone know where I can get a copy of this song in the US?)

Madonna-Live to Tell, Like A Prayer, You'll See

    Rush-Nobody's Hero, Animate

    U2-One, I Will Follow, Stay(Faraway, So Close)

    GNR-November Rain, Don't Cry, Estranged

    Queen-Who Wants to Live Forever

    Seal-Crazy

I think this is enough for now!

Neither would I. Especially the musical part. Fates is FAR superior to Rush. Snap that.

But what about those of us who can't wait for the new Fates and already *have* to dimension logic? :)

Is TDL still available, though? I thought they broke with their label (not that that would necessarily mean TDL is out of print). Their more recent demos are pretty awesome, too, but their web page is gone so I don't know where to tell people to go to get those. Anyone know if they have a page somewhere else now? Anyone know anything at all about what's going on with Vauxdvihl these days?

If you can get To Dimension Logic, or anything else of theirs, go for it. Immediately.

OK. I quit listening to Pearl Jam now. I didn't realize that my intellectual level was so far below yours. I must quit my listening to my belligerant, thoughtless music, and listen to the enlightening aural pleasures of which you speak.

    NOT!

One thing you gotta realize chum is that people who listen to Dream Theater don't have to be completely secluded to one musical boundary. Hell, I listen to everything from Pantera to Dream Theater to Yanni to Pink Floyd to Pearl Jam to Les Miserables to Eric Johnson to Bon Jovi to (almost fearful to admit) Garth Brooks to Megadeth. Heheh, I'm can barely stand country, but I like Ropin' the Wind OK. :) Hell, you can even throw Def Leppard and Bad Religion in there as well... Why don't you do yourself a favor and broaden your horizons a bit. Don't rate music by how popular it is, rate it by how well you like it. I mean, it's gotta be popular for some other reason, ya know?
