Just thought I'd point folks at a page (http://www.quackwatch.com/GT/)
that might prove insightful. 40+ musicians put together a tribute to
Gentle Giant and they really have done a nice job (Nice web page
organization as well). Judge for yourself.

    But it wasn't :)

Pulled out some old vinyl I've had stored away for several years, one of
which was Kansas' "Point of Know Return". I had forgotten how much I
love this stuff. Anyone who doubts whether this band was progressive
enough (whatever "enough" means) only need listen to Paradox, Portrait
(He Knew) and Closet Chronicles (especially the jam at the end). The
similarities in song structure with that of DT's are quite evident,
blending the intricate with the outright "jam from the soul"

It was our last, best hope for 97.....and the name of band is DT :)

With the new disc coming out real soon now :) , I noticed that "Lines in
the Sand" might cause problems when attempting to acronymonize it :)
Now, I feel it is my duty to make D-man aware of this.

down on your ass, Chris. What are you going to do, toss a mountain dew

    issue :)

I think his name was spelled Gage. He was a railroad worker who got a big
spike in his head and then after they pulled it out he freaked out a lot.
They told us about him in psychology to illustrate the point that having a
large metal object puncture your brain can have an adverse affect on your

I found some really cool music recently and thought I share the story of how I
    happened to come across it.

I was at CD Warehouse a few weeks back digging around to see what I could
find. I headed over to the "Import" section to see if they had anything by our
favorite group. While I was digging around, I caught something out the corner
of my eye. It had large block letters in yellow/orange on a dark background.
Those of you with Superior's album might be reminded of something you've seen.
I sure was. When I realized that it *wasn't* Superior after all, I thought
nothing more of it and went on my way.

A week or so later I still hadn't managed to get that image out of my head, so
I did a quick net search on the name and ended up at the WWW Music Database in
Norway. They had a few brief words about the group, labeled them as
"gothic/medieval", and gave their first album a 9.7 out of 10 rating. So back
    to CD Warehouse I went.

I picked up their first album (not the one that had caught my eye), tossed it
into their CD player, and was hooked in under 15 seconds. The group is "Faith
and the Muse". They are by no means heavy. They are dark, ominous, powerful,
beautiful, whimsical, and driving. If you're looking for crunch, though,
    there's none of that here.

It's a two person outfit, so no wild guitar solos, no manic drums fills, no
thick orchestrations. It's nothing like Dream Theater, Fates Warning,
Savatage, Vai, or any of the other people that get mentioned around here most
of the time. But it is good, or at least I think so. If you find yourself
listening to Brave, Watermark, Dead Winter Dead, and Promised Land more often
than I&W, Space in Your Face, and Ah Via Musicom, this might be something you'd
like. The one description I've been able to come up with that people seem to
agree with is imagine Trent Reznor and Enya being locked up in a studio
    together.

For those who are interested, they've got their own web site at
www.mercyground.com. I don't remember seeing any sound clips there, but I
believe you can order CDs for those daring enough to order something unheard.
If you ever run across one of their albums, I'd suggest giving it a listen.

I've since gone back and picked up their second album, and I think I like it
even better than the first. So, in a nutshell...

    Group: "Faith and the Muse"
    Albums: Elyria
             Annwyn, Beneath the Waves
    WebSite: www.mercyground.com

I'm working on putting some .wav files together for anyone who'd like to hear
them. Only problem is, my e-mail gateway would throw a fit if I tried to mail
them to anyone and I don't have a web page. So, I'm looking for volunteers to
host 2-4 Megs worth of .wav files. Any takers?

I love this album, is one of the best Marillion albums ever, if you sell it,
it could be the biggest regret of your life (hehe... just kidding). Before
you do that, please hear it carefully, it has very poetic lyrics, pay
special attention to the harmony of the songs. My fave track is "Out Of This
World". Anyway, if you don't like it after a few more listenings, go sell
it, but don't say I didn't warn you (hehe).

everyone over. About a week ago, they sent me an e-mail saying that I could
get a refund for the 2 cd's I ordered and never got so I decided to go for
the Queensryche CD "Silent Lucidity" and a 15 dollar refund. Maybe if I'm

    Coincedence? Perhaps....

I've always gotten much more satisfaction going to the local gig in

Ya know, once in a while it can get a bit hot around here. All of the
flamage that is spewed about can make this place seem a bit...well...
    immature.

I think what we need is a bit more class. More panache! Which is why
I think that when you have the urge to blow somebody's head off with
your computer keyboard, you should do it in a more civilized manner.
I found the perfect place to do this: the Elizabethan Curse Generator!
Hop on over to http://www.tower.org/disease/insult.html and let the
    curses fly!

    * What do you say when somebody insults your favorite band?

    Thou fawning pinch-spotted puttock!

    * How about those ignorant people who slam your entire favorite genre?

    Thou yeasty weather-bitten pumpion!

    * Of course you have to respond to those that defend grunge:

    Thou whoreson dizzy-eyed horn-beast!

    * How about when somebody tramples all over _your_ tribute project?

    Thou spleeny dog-hearted hempseed!

    * Don't you hate it when somebody takes Bafu Vai seriously?

    Thou bawdy unchin-snouted scullion!

    * Tired of seeing top-X lists?

    Thou loggerheaded sheep-biting nut-hook!

    * Did somebody say that Dream Theater ISN'T god???

    Thou peevish white-livered coxcomb!

So c'mon! Let's make the ytsejam a more civilized place! If you
must flame, flame with style! Let the ytsejam rise above the embers
of the internet to become an example of classy sophistication and
    dignity, thou hideous pale-hearted hedge-pig!

    Salutationz, fellow Jammerz -

This post goes out to whomever posted in one of the previous Jams that 2 good bootleg places on the Web are Eric's CD Mine and CD Cellar. Could you please post the web addresses for the two places? I couldn't find them when searching the web. Thanx!

BTW, I was pleasantly surprised to read that others were pissed at the ommission of a couple of those awesome parts from the original version of ACOS on the new version. My wife, ever since she heard the new version, has complained to me about the fact that DT scrapped the "16th note" part. (I'm not a musician, so I have no idea what the hell that means... but I think I know the part they're talking about...). I have to agree with my wife on that one. I am also personally upset at the fact that they replaced that AWESOME key solo at the end with the guitar solo replacement. It just doesn't have the same emotion as far as I'm concerned. I do, however, love the ballz and chunk part they added, as well as the great stuff they added at the beginning of the song. I guess the bottom line is that I like pieces of both versions, but I am not sure which one I like better. Laterz!!! - Matt T.

Thought I'd send in some "Passionate Tunes" too. These aren't just songs that I find beautiful. *Most* of them even move me to tears, especially the ones by Marillion.

Marillion : Easter, Out of this World, Runaway, The Great Escape, Splintering Heart, Seasons End, Warm Wet Circles

It Bites : The Ice Melts Into Water

    Dream Theater : Space-Dye Vest

Queensryche : Out of Mind, Bridge, Someone Else?, Silent Lucidity, Anybody Listening?, Suite Sister Mary

Btw, just read a raving review of Spock's Beard "The Light" in the Dutch Dream Theater fanzine. It says Mike Portnoy thinks they are the best prog band since Marillion. :-)

Right on. Just because you don't like Megadeth, it doesn't mean that Megadeth fans are stupid. And I'd also say that Megadeth, specifically Marty Friedman, could give DT a run run for their money.

-Pat Worrall (Stupid Megadeth Fan who's smart enough to also like Dream Theater, Queensryche, and many other bands. Wow, I can even spell the name right. Pretty good for a stupid Megadeth fan.)

There's no one to take my blame...if they wanted to Nothing to keep me sane, and it's all the same to you There's nowhere to set my aim so I'm everywhere Never come near me again, do you really think I need you And I'll smile and I'll learn to pretend And I ll never be open again And I'll have no more dreams to defend And I'll never be open again Dream Theater - Space-Dye Vest +++++Pat Worrall+++Augustana College+++Patrick-Worrall@Augustana.Edu+++++

hey listen guys : Let me first begin by saying that i never expected the harshly overwhelming responses to my rather anodyne, innocuous little midterm-stress-influenced note to our beloved ytse-jam. Actually, I was quite pleased to read the youthfully enthousiastic (yet sophmoric) replies by some "jammers" who shall, out of my overly-tested courtesy, remain nameless ( though they probably are in real life). Neverless, I realize that my molecular bio grad classes and thesis don't allow me the pleasure of writing very much or often, so I'd like to thoroughly apologize to those poor souls whom i may have offended. And if anyone of the poop-heads who took this to heart STILL carry an unreasonable grudge against myself or my comments after this date, we can arrainge a "pleasant" meeting where I may bash your SHIT-ENGORGED HEADS in....whatdoya think??? Actually, I don't give a cheap fuck about any of this and ya fuckin' know what.....NEITHER SHOULD YOU. Love,

    Your majesty.
