    Hey all!

With all the talk about favorite songs and songs that move you (which has
gotten a bit outta hand, IMO) I do recall seeing others asking about what
happened with the petition without any response, so...

    WHAT HAPPENED WITH THE PETITION?

Anyone care to shed light on it?? D-Man? Chris Ptachek? Itchy? Anyone?

    Hey,
does anyone out there in Ytse-land have the guitar tablature for
AHTKH? I can't find it anywhere, so if you do have it could you either
e-mail it to me or maybe to the Jam, cause you never know how many other
people might be looking for it. Thanks in advance.

hm... maybe its due to the fact that we're just as much at fault as
east/west with our delays... in good humor, i'm starting up a "get the
petition sent!" petition. if you want on it, just mail me with the subject
"get it sent!" and your comments in the body. it'll be fun, we can all bash
ourselves for the same things we're trying to bash east/west for; so say the
meanest, most heartless, arrogant things you can think of! woo hoo! ;)

where is it going to be sent? i dont know.. i'll figure it out later, maybe
we'll have to call up a petition to get this one sent after a while, but for
    now, just sign away! =)

Yip, I just copied the liner notes off the promo CD... Don't blame me
         <G>....

    >IMO, it was annoying to read the comparisons with Rush because Fates is
    >an entirely superior band, with their own, truly unique identity.
Well, I too agree that Fates shouldn't be compared to anybody else,
because in my opinion they really don't sound like anybody else. I won't
even get into the 'superior band' argument <G>... Rush has always been my
favorite band since I started out listening to music way back in the
stonge age, and I have never thought that Fates sounded anything like
Rush...maybe some bits and pieces here and there, but nothing major.
Definately not enough to justify all the Rush comparisons on the CD...

    >I won't get into an argument over who's better, as that's a matter of
    >opinion, but Fates does stand on their own and shouldn't be subjected to

    >for them to mention a band that people know about, but I think they
    >overdid it and made it sound like Fates was trying to be the next Rush,
    >which I don't think Fates has ever done.
I definately agree with you here... Especially this new album, they
are definately their own band... I think the liner notes are a little
misleading...if they really wanted to compare them to a more famous
act, I think I would have choosen a very experimental Queensryche, but
even that comparison doesn't do them justice...

    >Still waiting for your review, Mike. Did I miss it? I'm dying to know

As soon as I get some free time from work, I'll be posting a review

I was just curious; if Mike Portnoy decided to leave DT (HE'S NOT, SO RELAX!)
who do you think would be a good replacement. My pick would have to be Eric
Singer. Lots of you may not like KI$$, but Eric is a brilliant drummer that
would compliment ANY band that he plays for.

All of a sudden I feel very old. I can remember hearing Future World on
the radio shortly after the release of 'Keeper of the Seven Keys, Part 1'.
I gather from your post that the only Helloween you've heard is the new
incarnation without Michael Kiske and Kai Hansen.

The seminal Helloween albums are without question the "Keeper" albums
(parts 1 and 2). Together, they can be viewed as the band's "Best Of".
Nothing they've done since holds a candle to these, particularly since
Andi Deris took up vocal duties. If you haven't heard these albums, seek
    them out!

Another noteworthy album to come out of the Helloween family tree is
Gamma Ray's 'Insanity and Genius'. For that one album, Gamma Ray stopped
taking itself too seriously and made some kick butt music.

Thanks go out to Mark, I've been waiting for someone else to point this out. You would think that a Dream Theater fan would be intelligent enough to not be condescending towards bands they know nothing about. It just so happens that Friedman is not only one of the best guitarists out there but one of the best composers as well. He's got 4 solo albums, the 2 he did with cacophony, and he guest solo'd on Becker's Perpetual Burn. Here's a guy that will talk about playing technique with you when you meet the band, and hops on the internet every now and then to talk to fans. If you've ever seen megadeth live you know that they are NOT an act to be missed. And though I have 4 DT CD's, I haven't been able to get to one of their shows yet :(, so since I haven't been to a DT show, I can safely say that NO band i've ever seen has a tighter live show then Megadeth. They make *no* mistakes in their playing, and they make it look effortless. Friedman has one of the most graceful styles of soloing out there. Mustaine has some of the most aggressive rhythm and soloing styles you can find anywhere. They are both incredibly skilled guitarists and musicians and it makes for a beautiful musical dichotomy. Menza and Ellefson are both damn good as well, but everyone knows Megadeth is a guitar band. They are there to crank out music that drives and is done correctly.

Does this sound so different from Dream Theater ? I mean Mustaine himself said he was impressed as hell with Dream Theater. Mustaine is a guy that doesn't say anything nice about anyone, and wont give anyone a break. Megadeth has been around longer and currently has a larger fan base than DT, so for him to be saying something positive about DT i think really says alot. I've talked to the guy a little, he's reasonably intelligent.

Dream Theater and MEGADETH would be a show i'd pay nearly any amount to see. And yes, a guitar competitino between friedman and petrucci would blow my mind, im sure. :)

If you guys are looking for more info on friedman, check

Damn, I just noticed I forgot to include Tori Amos in my Passionate Tunes post ! Well, here they are :

Sugar, Silent All These Years, Winter, China, Upside Down, Icicle, Honey, Marianne and all the others I forgot.

It's been exactly 11 months today since I first checked out Tori's music, thanks to all posts about her on this list :-) Let's face it... She's a Goddess :->

Hey Jammers, I finally re-subscribed to the list to get some info on the new album (which am eagerly awaiting). I'm a little behind on some of the topics covered over the last couple of weeks, but there's been a lot lately about some of the cool CD's that people have found in the Bargain Bin of their local record stores. I just wanted to give a recommendation to all of you out there. There's a Christian metal band called "Believer" that I think a lot of you would really like. It's not the stereotypical happy crap that I had expected. It's very heavy, progressive metal (emphasis on heavy). In fact, some of it is borderline death-metal-ish. The CD that I have of them is called Dimensions and I absolutely love it. They combine violins with crunch and it's got some really awe inspiring grooves to it. It may be a little hard to find (I had to order it) but try to get it. You will not be disappointed. I will offer the disks at cost of making them for all jammers if I can get the DAT. Is anyone interested? Please e mail if you are. I really want to do this! Later, the J man.

Hello All!!!! Here's the latest: 2 more new songs to add to the never-ending list of material. 1. A New Millennium (8:15) (lyrics by MP) 2. Speak To Me (6:15) (lyrics by JL)

This bring the current (and I think final) taley up to 16 songs clocking in at 2 1/2 hrs. I have no further news at the moment, but I have a fee- ling something's around the corner.......(but what the hell do I know?! I thought that 6 months ago!!!!) I will obviously let everybody know when there is something to know. In the meantime, I think the Ytsejam petition is real encouraging and impressive and my opinion is that if you want it to have any impact on the label, now would be the time to send it.........but keep us out of it.......

Actually, you very well might be disappointed. It should at least be pointed out that most of the vocals are in the death metal style and therefore a lot of people could consider them "horrible" and thus be disappointed.

It's an awesome disk, but it's not for everyone. If you do get it, I recommend not listening to track 11. Don't worry, it's not a song, you won't be missing anything.

But don't you get it? Best Buy is in league with the devil! No, I mean it! See, there's this grand conspiracy between all these marketing executives from...like...MTV, major record labels, clothing manufacturers, and a number of other businesses which can capitalize on popular culture. They don't follow these trends. They make them! (OK, so maybe there's nothing Satanic about it, but it certainly is diabolical.)

    >There is never going to be a new genre of music that will >please everyone, thus there are many different styles. This is a good >thing. We all need some sort of variety.

I agree wholeheartedly that variety and creativity are Good Things(TM). What I'm trying to point out here is that the deliberate marketing effort involved in creating something like grunge KILLS the kind of variety that we both want to see.

    >So too with any type of music, whether >it be grunge or rap or country. I may not personally like them, but >others do, and their musical taste has just as much merit as anyone >else's.

Here's where I have to differ. There's a food chain in the world of music, and some categories are without question bottom feeders. Let's, just for the sake of argument, invent a brand new form of pop music and see what our keen, objective minds can make of it.

It involves speaking rapidly in street dialect over a drum machine. Minimal melodic content is added using samples of other people's recorded music. The standard lyrics of the genre promote violence, drug abuse, racism and misogyny and are peppered with pointless obscenity.

    Oh...really? That one's taken?

While DT *is* my favorite band, I wouldn't put them at the head of the food chain either. I wouldn't trade the raw power and emotion inherent in being front row at a great rock show for anything, but I have learned enough about music to see that even DT's songs can't compete with the vision of many classical composers and jazz artists (from whom DT borrows on a regular basis).

The idea here is not so much to set up a pecking order or hierarchy, but to point out that there are objective measures for the level of craftsmanship and quality in different styles of music.

I hope that a few people give some thought to this before someone points a giant finger (careful with that thing) and yells, "Elitist!" Hey, I know it's going to happen. After all, this IS the internet.

I am wondering just what the hell Magna Carta are doing to a band like Enchant ? MC are not releasing 'Wounded' until May 20th, this album has been released in Germany since late September last year. Why the delay ? Why do they seem to be sitting on such a killer album ? According to Enchant's home page they cannot tour the US unless MC say they can. The booklet of 'Wounded' mentions 'bad record companies, changing labels and personality conflicts'. This is not meant to be a Magna Carta bashing, but they seem to be screwing a lot of bands, but they seem to be the only record company around that are signing young prog bands.

If you are searching for Shadow Gallery's and Magellan's debut try M & M Progressive Music they are very reliable and have a few hard to find CD's, and they took only a week to ship to me here in Australia. http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/4500/home.html

Bootlegs, KTS at http://www.kts.it/ they have quite a good selection, and acually have stock and shipped to me in a week. Their boots always are great sounding.
