Yeah, I love it when that happens too. It's a real riot, eh? I can't
believe a guy who hates Dream Theater is actually reading and posting on
this list. He prooved my point by mentioning it too. That's right -- go
back to your Megadeth list, KorgX3! We don't want you here.

BTW, it's nice to know someone supports me here. I appreciate it, but
really, you don't have to try and flatter me by referring to me as more
than one person. I know I'm that intelligent, but I would prefer you not
use incorrect grammar such as "someone ... themselves" -- there are other
ways to compliment people that are more gramatically correct.

I'm sure nobody cares, but just for the record (since I've been sorta bashing
grunge :P) another guitarist whom I hang out with and whose opinion I respect
likes PJ quite a bit. We sat down together and gave the album a fair
number of listens. This was before PJ songs were slathered across the radio

This is in response to the guy who said he say Marty Friedman do a clinic and was thoroughly unimpressed. First of all, the reason that some people will say that MF is a better guitarist than JP or others is that he has one of the most fluid and immediately recognizable lead styles of any modern rock guitarist. To say that he is better or worse than JP is rather silly, but I think it's fair to say that while JP can clearly cover a greater range of styles than MF, Marty does his thing, even if it's just his one thing, amazingly well. I can identify most Marty Friedman solos based on one whole note. Can we honestly say that about JP? He's a great guitar player, but his style is more just a mishmash of every other flatpicking style know to guitar-playing man. Sort of a jack-of-all-trades, but a master of none, in my mind. I don't mean to sound as negative as I do about Petrucci, he's one of my favorite players, but I think the discussion a couple of months ago about JP's supposed "lack of soul" had some validity. Although, I wouldn't call it a lack of soul, some of my all-time favorite emotional guitar parts are his. HOwever, I do think it's fair to say that JP is not as EXPRESSIVE with his guitar as some other players. Marty's playing, on the other hand, sounds incredibly natural. He pulls off some amazingly difficult parts, but they don't sound at all forced. However, you seem interested entirely in technique, so let's talk about that. First of all, it seems a bit ignorant to me to knock a player for the way he holds his right hand. Maybe this is the source of his unique sound. But anyway, if it's technical difficulty your interested in, I recommend trying to play some of his stuff before you pass it of as technically weak. Go ahead. The books for all three of his albums with Megadeth are widely available. But don't assume that it will be easy, even if you are a pretty decent guitar player. I can pull of alot of JP's parts that most people would consider to be some of his tougher ones. But there are some Friedman solos on his MD albums that I can't even TOUCH. What's more, even if you can hit all the notes in the space of a measure, he has some of the most innovative, unexpected, and off the wall phrasing you'll ever hear from a pure lead standpoint. It's VERY difficult to really reproduce his sound and get the solos to sound the way they do when he plays them. I think your criticism of him is founded in ignorance and a closed mind because you don't like the band he plays in. So there. I will admit, though, that comparing Mustaine's rythm or especially his lead playing to JP's seems a bit absurd to me. I could tell you why, but this is already too long. Besides, I think it's JP's rythm playing that sets him apart from the crowd, not his leads. -Clark

But that's precisely what I've been screaming for the last couple of days! If people aren't given the opportunity to hear good music because music industry marketing people decree that it isn't cool, then how can anyone ever make an informed decision? You just restated my point as well as I ever could have done it myself! Thanks!

Hey, it's great that his disability isn't stopping him. The problem I have with him releasing two albums is that there are monster musicians out there with chops and song writing skills and personality and attitude to burn who will never have an album.

Maybe you think that's no big deal, but I've seen it from the other side of the fence. I've had friends who've struggled and practiced their asses off. I've watched them give their heart and soul and literally starve. The most disheartening thing isn't watching them struggle. It's seeing them give up when they realize that no matter how hard they try, they won't get their break. The music industry doesn't just promote bad taste. It kills the dreams of people who are truly deserving while giving a free ride to others who were just in the right place at an opportune time.

    Yeah...I know...now I should cool off. :)

After all this ranting about imbecile Megadeth fans, I am actually tempted to join it. Boy, at least I could sure associate with people of my own cro-magnon idiocy rather than the supreme ingeniosity of this list. Jeez. Some people live in their own little world, and some people live in the real world.

Gaaawl, blimey, the name's at the tip of my tongue... Aaagh! This is going to drive me nuts! Russell? I...I don't remember!

Anyhow, I know a few things about him having heard a Music of the '90s report on the fellow (one of the five that *wasn't* on Hendrix or Marley). He's actually got a *ton* of albums, a lot more than two in any case, and is not homeless anymore. A paranoid schizophrenic, he makes up these songs and then promptly forgets them. His concerts consist of him walking on stage and pressing the play button for a recording. He actually has a band that plays on some songs. They basically play whatever they want, and he screams along. I've heard a few songs by the fellow - the one was about how he was knifed on the bus, the other about being attacked by vampire bats. All extremely humorous (I was in stitches), but one feels kinda guilty in knowing you're laughing at someone else's expense. He's making a lot of money, and is off the streets now, thanks to his music, though...

    >i dunno if he has a cat though, wouldnt wanna threaten something i >could stand up to =) Eh, I just wanted to say "I'll kill your cat." :) I think it's something of a combination of realization and exposure. By becoming exposed to things (hehe, I almost said "by exposing ourselves to things :), we realize what is really out there. And yes, we do have the same mind throughout our entire life, but that mind can grow and have a more rounded view of the world. I try not to shut out any one form of music. Some of my favourite albums I didn't like as much at first (I wasn't all that crazy with Tourniquet's Pathogenic... at first, but it grew on me a lot. Same with Iron Maiden. I used to hate them, but they've been one of my favourite bands for about 8 years now). This list has helped me to have a more mature view of music. I try to see the good qualities in a lot of things. Of course, there are bands I absolutely despise that I have tried to like, but that's a different story. Eh, enough of my yakkin'. Let's boogie!!!

I just wanted to add some details to this. Yes, Rush is going out on the second leg of the Test For Echo tour in May and June, and they're playing a lot of outdoor shows. A list of (mostly confirmed) dates can be found at the NMS page: http://syrinx.umd.edu/rush.html.

    Joke of the Day:

How many jammers does it take to give a review -- all of them. Half to say they like it and the other half to beat'em up (verbally) because they disagree with them.

Well folks, that offer I extended to lars, is open to anyone who wants to come tell me I'm an ass to my face instead of in the jam. Besides, We can take care of all the problems in 1 swift little irc session :)
