the like, where people go to find RARE stuff, only to find smashing
pumpkins, pearl jam, and many other popular bands. granted, i did come
away with 2 dt posters from the shows, but that was 2 years ago and i
havent seen anything since. later.

Nuno has only ons solo album out. And Schizophonic is a good
album. I would say progressive in its own right. A lot of
experimentation with mixing styles. THere are songs that look like they
will be rap tunes, dance tunes, and even something that might be a
Beatles song, until Nuno puts his twist into it. Not too many shredding
guitar solos in it, but there are some. I personally like it... give it
a shot.

Whoever wrote this needs some serious help. I saw Marty do a clinic for
Jackson at NAMM. He is musically illiterate. He has absolutely no theory
knowledge at all. OK- but for those of you that disregard that when rating
someone as a musician- he has no muting technique at all. He never plays a
muted note in his leads. He has this funky technique that pulls his palm as
far away from the bridge as possible. It looks like its being completely
detrimental to his playing. So- he can pretty much only use his left hand to
change articulations. I watched him play up close for about ten minutes. (I
got bored and left well before he finished) He is not at all impressive to
me. He is extremely overated. I know whoever said this is probably the
hugest Megadeth fan on the list. If you base your opinion on what you have
heard on the albums- thats great, but until you see him play upclose- you
just don't know how overrated he is. The fact that you compared Mustaine and
Petrucci makes me feel queasy. Listen to his playing. Those are some weak
leads. His rhythm playing isn't enough to even make me compare him. If you
want to listen to impressive rhythm playing, pick up an Al Di Meola album.

While this may be how the whole alternative revolution started I don't
think it connects much to DT's music. Maybe you're the one who wants to be

Wow, you must have been a real loser if you got all excited about checking

There have always been those arguments ever since I've been here since Jam
#500 or so.

I agree with this. For instance, I got nothing out of the Chaos Theory
waves. However listening to a lot of prog bands that sound the same is a
hell of a lot better than a buch of alternative bands that sound the same.
Besides, most bands don't really come into their own identity until a few
albums into their career, but bands aren't allowed to do that anymore. It's
one album or bust. If it's not successful you're done for. Look at Rush,
they kind of sucked (with the exception of Working Man) up until their
fourth album. Even WDADU just kind of sounded like Rush meets Metallica
(although I still love the album). Since you're a drummer/loser I don't
know if you write songs, but it's hard to come up with a real original
sound. People just write what they think sounds good, they're not trying to
start a music revolution.
If you were looking for starting a thread that would get responses you will
probably be successful. However, you also need to realize you're
potentially offending an entire mailing list, whereas in this response I'm
only offending you :) Peace.

I rather enjoy the posts by 'jammers suggesting other bands to listen to,
prog or otherwise. Not all of us have spent enormous time & money
listening to all the new CD's from obscure artists. I appreciate the
efforts of 'jammers to point some of us towards something we might enjoy

Whoa. For a long time I've seen idiotic posts come and
go here, but that was the lowest. Where did you go and
scourge up that attitude ?
1) I was here when that 'story' thread came up. Some of those
were good and I enjoyed the thread and as I remember a
hell lot of other people did too. 'Metropolis' was interes-
ting and the dude had alot of energy and conviction to
pull that off. You didn't like it, fine, but what you spewed
out was not critique, but an offensive attack.
2) Anyone with brains could've seen that the percussion ensemble
dude was a little distrought with the judges's response to
their effort. Takes a moron to flame that the way you did.
Go back and see Rip's post to find out how what you said
could've been put properly.
So you wanna make the list 'fun' again. What I remember none of
your posts had any informational value. About 10% of them were
vaguely homorous though. But with that attitude I really doubt
you could contribute anything worthwhile.
Man, you're showing your age.

Hey Jammerz -
I, for one, enjoyed Eric's "Metropolis" story. It made for a good
read...Nice job, Eric! As far as the actual "Metropolis" and "The Killing
Hand" songs being based on John Petrucci stories, I had not heard that
before, but what the hell do I know? To the best of my knowledge, the songs
were based on a fictional theme JP came up with - I don't think he ever
actually sat down and wrote a story, even though he may have had a "story" in
mind when penning the song lyrics. Anybody know for sure out there??
Well, the main reason for my post is a few jams ago, Jeremy Kube mentioned
how he'd like to make a CD boot of the Toad's Place Fix show. I was really
shocked at the lack of responses to this post. (I don't recall seeing a
single response on the Jam!) Well, if I am the first to respond, let me
respond with a resounding "HELL, YEAH!!!" I think that would rule, seeing as
the Fix gig was the best DT show I'd ever seen!!! So, I, too, am pleading
for the individual with the DAT from the show to get in touch with Jeremy,
and make this thing a reality. I'm chomping at the bit!!!
Hey, what ever happened to the YtseJam tribute thing? Did the in-fighting
just get too bitter and the idea was scrapped? If so, it's a shame we
couldn't resolve our differences with the project - I thought it was a great
idea.

Whatever happened with the damned DT petition?? Private e-mail me someone.
My new idea has to do with that...
What if YTSECON IV just happened to take place, say, on the front steps of
Elektra Records' headquarters with, say, about 1000 jammers holding signs
telling the record company to get their asses in gear?? I don't think
anything has been done like that before. I'm sure MTV would show up for
such a freak occurance as a demonstation on behalf of a progressive rock
band. Frankly, I think DT is getting the shaft and I don't buy all this
talk that "everything is cool." Hmmmm...one can dream.
Finally, if anyone can tell me where I could get a copy of any stuff by
Spock's Beard, I'd appreciate it.

i cant explain why something is to be liked, but music revolutions in
general just start from people showing each other bands. SOME HOW the
"alternative" music got more word around than "progressive", but if the same
amount of word would have been spread about progressive, there would be a
progressive revolution. you make it seem as if people dont have their own
tastes, you think all these people really are mindless trend followers?
fuck you! people have their own god damn minds and i'm sick of hearing
people tell me they dont. its all a matter of exposure. i showed a kid in a
gravity kills t-shirt some fear factory last week and he loved it, he asked
me where i find all these cool bands.. so some people's lives dont revolve
around music and they just listen to whats easily acessable and sounds good
to them. people sit here on their pedastols and preach to the world how
things are and it makes me sick. i heard the smashing pumpkins right at the
release of siamese dream, on the radio late at night, before anyone had ever
told me about them, and i liked it. could it possibly be that people hear
them on the radio and they LIKE IT? whats even worse is when i got turned
onto dream theater and stuff i went through a childish period of thinking
that kind of music sucked because it was "poseur music" and shit. well now
i broke out of that, and i can truly appreciate all music. if you cant,
then you cant appreciate any music truly. maybe someone should kick a hole
in your head and open your mind.

Several people have mentioned the fact the majority of prog bands coming out
today resemble either a) DT too much or b) 70's prog too much. Albeit the
statement is somewhat true, what people seem to overlook remains where we are
in terms of the prog movement... at the beginning. Few bands have put out
their second album leaving them victim to the crisis of searching for their
own identity. Hell, DT sounded too much like Rush with WDADU when it first
came and critics agreed. Those sentiments have been awakened with bands like
Altura and Lemur Voice to name a few. The bottom line is we have to wait
until bands decide where they want to go and how they want to do it. As
mentioned DT has gone in a totally different direction w/ Derek (for me, give
me Kevin any day but...) but most likely the rest of the band has grown up
and is looking for a more mature sound. Call it QR syndrome if you must, but
in ten years DT may end up in the same place. That's progressive music by
defintion. Take the time.
