    I'd add to previous recommendations...

-- Jean-Michel Jarre' almost anything, but especially Oxygene,
Equinox, Rendezvous and Live in Houston/Lyon

-- Ozric Tentacles much of their stuff could be considered new
age based on synth content and lack of vocals (usually). Currently
    one of my favorite bands.

-- The Changelings local to here (Atlanta), I got their CD last
year after they played our convention (Dragon*Con) and it's a bit of a
cross between Dead Can Dance and light gothic -- guitar, violin,
synth, vocals, drums. Saw them play two nights ago at another,
smaller convention and was basically blown away. Terrific show.

-- Dead Can Dance impossible to pigeonhole, but New Age fits as
well as, say, Celtic or Tribal or Dance. :) Still ranks as one of
the most amazing live shows I have EVER seen.

By the way, while we're on the subject... Mike Portnoy sucks compared to Protege's drummer... ;)

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids...

Concerning the supposed Fates Warning/Conception co-headlining tour with Elegy warming up I have no info, but a few other points in the last jam puzzled me...

I find it very peculiar that there's been any info about a Stratovarius/ Superior tour, because to the best of my knowledge neither Timo Tolkki, Timo Kotipelto or Bernd Basmer are aware of this. So I wouldn't take it too seriously. BUT! Timo Kotipelto mentioned to me that PROBABLY Stratovarius will ne touring with Conception in the very near future.

So we're all into new age music now, are we? Cool! Has anyone heard Medwyn Goodall's "The Way of the Dolphin"? Now that's a cd that will put you to sleep every time you hear it no matter what you were doing. Simple, yet beautiful acoustic guitar and well-balanced synth sounds combined with authentic voices of marine mammals. There is not one disturbing sound on the whole disc. Highly recommended.

Yanni is very good also and everyone's heard something from him so I won't get into that any further, but has anyone heard Adiemus? Adiemus is basically the London Philharmonic Orchestra with a South-African female vocalist. There are no lyrics in their songs, but voices that give the impression of a mystical language that never existed. They combine the structures of Gregorian chant and various ethno influences in their music. Also very highly recommended. Very calming, yet there seems to be something from the Olde World in the atmosphere.

Who says Kenny G is uncool? I have one of his promo singles (The Moment) and I think it's very appeasing, beutiful piece of music.

All you who like New Age music get your hands on Ulver's "Kveldssanger". It's not New Age, but close enough. Once you hear it, you'll get my idea.

Thanks for your 'words of wisdom' Chris, surely you could have used private e-mail to get your point across instead of your childish public name calling problem Do you have a tape of the shows ? You might want to point your accusing big finger at the ppl who taped the show. Ryan was only trying to give ppl like me who didn't attend the shows or haven't got a boot something new to tie us over until the album is out.

Just a quick note to anyone interested in QR who has so far been put off by reports about the new album...

I just got HitNF last night, same day it hit the shelves here in the UK... The fuckers have done it again... had I not heard that they'd gone for a rawer/heavier sound, then this would have surprised the fuck outta me...

Despite this, they've still surprised the mega-fuck outta me... It's not down to whether this album is better or worse... there is no competition going on...

One thing I've always loved about QR over the 12 years I've been a fan, is that they've grown, changed & reflected that in each album. If it wasn't for a couple of trademarks to their style, the difference between each album would defy most to believe it was the same band... each QR album can live by the side of its predecessors without fear of being overshadowed...

HitNF has touches of Soundgarden, but also Bowie, "Promised Land", Beatles, you name it (I just noticed a touch of The Cult circa "Love" era & some REO Speedwagon/Journey sort of feel)... but the main difference is the overall sound... the drums sound more like the live sound for the MTV Unplugged stuff, like... it's easier to imagine Scott playing his drum parts on a 4 piece than on the huge bastard from the Building Empires tour... overall it has a less polished sound, more like a real band playing, relying on the notes rather than the sounds...

If, like me, you love the way QR have kept changing (dare I use the word "progressing" without being flamed!), then give this album a real listen... this motherfucker rocks big time...

    Fuck me, I love QUEENSRYCHE!!!

    Hi all

three very subjective album reviews for your pleasure, followed by some good news for the Teutonic jammers. But first the reviews.

THERION - Lepaca Kliffoth As I'll be seeing these guys next Wednesday, I thought it wise to get more familiar with their stuff other than Theli. After listening to Lepaca Kliffoth (what the hell does that mean, anyway?) 4-5 times, I can only say that I'm now really looking forward to seeing them live. This album has everything a good dark/gothic album should have - slow gentle moody passages (very reminiscent of Tiamat sometimes), grinding dirty guitars, all sorts of vocals from grunts to tenors and sopranos and hints of choirs, atmospheric keyboard arrangements, fast death/thrashy segments, and of course, texts about dragons and serpents and virgins. Neil's recommendation: buy buy buy.

HANDSOME - Handsome This is a recommendation that was made here on the jam last week - the jam is still useful sometimes. I forget who posted about these guys, but major thanks to you from me. This album is a must for anybody who likes Helmet and Silverchair. Full of good riffs and hook lines, fairly fast, very solid - an excellent debut. Most of the songs are over in 4-5 minutes, so it's not an album for those of you who get off on tracks whose lengths are best measured using a sundial. Prog it isn't, but good it is. Neil's recommendation: buy buy buy.

KYUSS - Wretch After tyring to order this thing for years, I finally found it at my local CD dealer (for a damn good price too). This was the first release by these desert heroes back in 1990. It doesn't quite have the depth of sound and gut-wrenching bass and guitars that was Kyuss, and is, if possible, a little rawer and dirtier than any of their other releases, but it still full of hard driving rhythms, full-out no-holds-barred rock and is instantly recognisable as Kyuss because of John Garcia's unique vocals. If you haven't heard Kyuss before, there are easier albums to get into, but if you know them and like them, then this little beauty will be a jewel in your collection. Neil's recommendation: buy buy buy (if you can find it).

So, now on to the really good news, especially for Kraut jammers. As far as I know, there will be an extra concert on Friday the 18th of April in Gross Umstadt, which is about 40 km from Frankfurt (and about 20 km from me). There are no tickets on sale yet, but I'll let you know when as soon as I find out. This was announced in our local paper here at the weekend. I'll be trying to contact the promoter today or tomorrow to find out exact details. Just to make the weekend one to remember, Threshold will be playing in my favourite club the day after. Looks like sacrificing my neighbour's cat to the music gods last full moon did some good after all...

Joke of the day: "Mummy, mummy, there's a man at the door with a bill". "Don't be silly dear, it's just a duck with a hat on".

Greetings friends, I want to back Chris up all the way. He's right to be angry. What is this "need"" to hav new DT now? Sure it would be nice, but why do you "have" to have it? Would it ease some injury? Or were you people who "need" this the types whose parents always gave in and bought you the candy, then the bike, then the car, and then let you live at home all expenses paid while they suffered the guilt and... Anyway, there are people without CD or tape players or tapes who don't know that rock exists. They don't "need" to hear every new damned song. Grow up and go listen to other jammer-reccomended stuff. God knows, I'd like to hear new DT myself. I didn't even catch them live this last tour, but for Christ's sake! I used to listen to Kitaro when I was about 6 or 7, around 12 years ago. Sniff sniff, the memory is so beautiful. Actually, I remember some of the melodies of The Silk Road to this day. I'll bet Enigma was very influenced by him. Wonderfully relaxing pretty music. Puts your mind at rest and your body to sleep. Be well. Matt B

    Fellow Deeteephiles:

I attended the Annual Record Convention here in Austin on Saturday, and picked up a really neat promo CD from Electra/East-West. It's called "Ear Infection" and has five different tracks by different Electra artists... and track 1 is "Perfect Strangers" from the Ronnie Scotts gig! It was only .99 cents! It also has a track by Kyuss, as well as a nice one from Anthrax. I'm not an Anthrax fan by any means, and hadn't heard of Kyuss until recently. I was pleasantly surprised at the Anthrax track, my previous experience with that band has been less than entertaining. The artwork is pretty surreal, all in all it's a nice disk for the 1.07 I spent on it.

Oh yeah, IMHO a Megadeth/DT tour would rock! Two bands don't have to have a similar sound in order to complement each other. Last summer I saw Soundgarden open for Metallica and the show was incredible! Contrast can be a good thing, you know...

Anyway, from what I could hear, all I've got to say is: What have they done with my favorite band? Who are these straightforward metal players and what have they done with the real Dream Theater? Am I wrong on this one? Granted, I did not listen to all of them, but this stuff is 'progressive' only because of who's playing it. Maybe I shouldn't gauge new material on a live performance, and some of this stuff could get reworked by the time they actually put it to tape (look at how many revisions ACoS went through), but they've got me not worried, but certainly confused.

9 hours until Michael Hedges. Eat your hearts out. Maybe I'll get to hold Michael Mannring's bass again during his insane 3-bass solo.
