Wow...any significant reason? All I've seen here indicates
a prejudice to the grunge style of music. Queensryche has stated that
this album is quite a bit more raw than other albums, and I've taken it
to be that there is less of a synthesized thing going on with the album.
As always, Queensryche's strength is with their lyrics, and indications
are that the lyrics are much stronger than in previous cases. That is
what separates QR from many other bands. Give it another shot...you may
be surprised. It comes out in the US on March 25th.
There has already been a drop in QR's album sales from Empire to
PL, PL debuted at #3, instead of the #1 it could have been. I think it
was probably from the lack of "Silent Lucidity" on PL, or any sort of
catchy tune that could be grab airplay like Silent Lucidity. Bridge
tried, but people didn't catch it like SL.
Even going back to O:M, Queensryche played some pretty non
progressive music. THe only thing really progressive about O:M was its
lyrics, and storyline. The music was pretty much 80's fare, except for
    Suite Sister Mary.
The operative thing here is that again, like always, how much the
album sells it NOT indicative of how good it is, otherwise DT would have
been #1 for 52 weeks running, no?

                                    -jeremy

PS I'm not even going to get into the Metallica thing. Suffice to say
Metallica will be back in studio this summer, so I guess there WILL be a
    next album for them.

i highly recommend "Dare to Dream". it was released in '92, and i
think it's his best next to that live disc. it has a great blend of
acoustic and synthesized instruments. it also features some damn
cool rhythms, with alot of songs being in "odd" time sigs.

oh, and btw, don't worry about getting your ass laughed off. i mean,
this is an open minded list. um, or something.

    Hey all,

Well, I picked up Altura's _mercy_ today. At first listen, I was somewhat
disappointed. This stems from the higher expectations that I place on prog
music due to the elevated level of composing that has been linked to most prog.
Anyway, I decided to read the liner notes to find out why it sounded so...
droll and hollow. Would you believe this...I actually got an answer. Summari-
zation of their remarks concerning their album (which were very well thought
out) is best done by saying that they have accomplished the other half of what
most grunge bands are trying to portray: teen angst. While most grunge bands
have the rage and confusion down pat in their sound, they most often miss the
lyrical mark by a wide margin, which can be likened to the old addage of being
able to "drive a Mack truck through it." Altura hits the lyrical mark on the
head, and even makes it more poinant with the "middle o' the range" vocals, by
putting the angst in more descriptive terms. The only drawback is that they
lack the punch usually assigned with the "teen angst" music. _mercy_ can be
seen as a concept album, and I doubt that their next one (should they be given
the chance to make one) will sound anything like this one.

Ok, Ivanhoe...'nuff said. Looking for a fix while waiting for new DT? Get
Ivanhoe if you don't have it. If you do, pop it in and sit back and *try* to
relax (which can only be done on Track 3, "By A Feeling"). This album is tight
and hits hard. I have had it for over a year and never tire of it. Definitely
one of my Top 10. (Egads!!! Please don't flame me for the reference... :-P )

Enough for today. This makes two in one day...an all-time high. Hey Damon, I
am catching up with you. Be afraid...

Being one of the (seemingly) three Yanni fans on this list, I'd like to say
that the album that got me into Yanni's music was _Dare To Dream_. Might be
my favorite one, along side _In My Time_.

And Phil, I still have your David Arkenstone recommendation on my "things to
get" list. Unfortunately, it seems I've spent much of my funds on DT
bootlegs over the last several months, so as soon as there's postive cash
flow, I'll let you know what I think of it.

Oops...re-read my last post *after* I had sent it and noticed that I had
forgotten to say exactly which side of the _mercy_ fence I am on. Definitely
the "buy it" side. Remember, this is an album which grows on you. You may not
like it at first listen, but given its fair due, it will make a rather decent
impression on you. As a rule, I tend to judge an album's overall effectiveness
and impact based upon the first few notes (the whole "first impressions"
theory). _mercy_ has a really cool intro, eerie and pensive. This let me know
it is to be a good album, though I didn't really like it the first listen.
Like the intro, the album will grow on yo in a slow, pensive manner.

Enough! 3 in 1...gotta be losin' my mind!

I can understand why people like that stuff, however some types of music
have a lot more to like going on, right? For instance, people might like
Green Day because it's catchy, fun music. However, I believe I can say
concretely (and this is not my opinion folks) that that type of music does
not have much depth. Why? Because there's not much going on. I have never
seen a real music enthusiast, one who listens to and has music as very
important part of their life, who's favorite type of music is Bush, No
Doubt, or Green Day. While music is subjective, there is also the music
that is sketched on the disc itself. One can not listen to three power
chords over and over without getting bored and eventually that's why the
whole genre dies out after a while. The people get sick of it. It took me 4
years to get sick of I&W (DT better release an album soon). Opinions,
    comments???

Finally, I have no problem with all these former metal acts (Metallica,
Queensryche, Nuno) heading down a more modern rock style (grungey?) path as
long as the songs are good. I don't think Metallica did that, but I love
the new Queensryche and Nuno. I just wonder why none of these bands that
were big back then don't come back with a truly kickass record in their old
style that is still original. Also, I understand the argument that these
bands need to change, but is it a coincidence that when all these bands
decide their style needs a change lately they go towards a simpler, grungey
style? How big a factor does the record company and cash play? I'm not
asking for flammage, this is just what I think.

Just thought I'd let it be known that some of us like Youthanasia much better
than Countdown...in fact, I would rate Countdown near the bottom of all their
albums. It has some awesome songs (Architecture of Aggression, Foreclosure of a
Dream, etc.), but overall I think it lacks the emotion and musicianship that the
other albums have. And I also don't understand the whole "Youthanasia is wussy"
thing - it seems heavier to me than countdown. Maybe it's just me. Anyway...

i can say, concretely, that playing fast has no depth. there's a lot going
on with those fingers, there's not much emotionally going on. i can also
say, its bull. i dont believe playing fast has no depth. there are no
facts to music. billy joe's old record collection consisted of van halen
and ozzy osbourne, he sights randy rhoads and EVH as early influences, he
never had the drive to "get real good" but he had the drive to write. yeah,
it can get boring to an ear, but it depends on the ear, not the music. the
main thing i disagree with here is that you state it concretely, its like
putting walls around an infinity. a form of putting it is depth in music
means it has something of redeeming value that reaches out to you. someone
may think metropolis sounds like nintendo music and get bored with it
quickly, while something like three chord rock plugged right into the head
is up their alley, and it doesnt mean they nor the music lack depth, it
means they favor other styles of music.

anyways, apart from the flaming, i gotta say the jam has been excitin'

Ever hear of Yanni? I'm actually Yanni incognito. :)

Actually, if you want lot's of spectacular musicianship with all the
whistles and bells, buy Live at the Apocalypse, er, Acropolis first.
Some people don't like it, but it was my 1st Yanni, and I ended up

It sounds like Yanni on acid. Particularly not my favorite, but it
    reminds of mellow Ozric.

Lemme just go on to brag that I think Yanni's band is probably the
most talented I've ever heard. Since Yanni and DT are far too
different, I don't think it's fair to compare talent between the two.
:) Listen to the bass solo on track 4. I swear I'd love to see
    Geddy try and match that.

Other recommends would be In Celebreation of Life which is a greates
hits album including most of his more energetic and symphonic pieces,
and Reflections of Passion containing some of his more romantic
themes. Dare to Dream is another excellent one. Why, hell, I think
they all kick ass in a pacifistic sort of way. :)

    Enjoy!

I dunno. Mr. Kenneth Gorelick is one of my favorites to mellow out
to. I guess people don't like him because he's a west coast G and
most of the people on the list are east coasters. His older stuff
was real funky. I never really got into his stuff till after
    Duotones. (Shrug)

Don't mess with us west coast G's. :)

That wouldn't happen to be Quest of the Dream Warrior wouldn't it?
Love that one. I also recommend the Spirit of Olympus with some
Russian dude name Kostia (who I have never heard of) and another kewl
dude named David Lanz. David has a couple albums one of which I have
is a compilation named Beloved. Real nice solo piano stuff. There
are a couple of orchestrated songs on there too.

I really recommend Quest of the Dream Warrior. It's my fave. If you
want what I feel is the best explanation of Dave's music, read the
