    Then Chuck wrote,

No, that would be "In the Wake of the Wind". If you don't already have that
one, you might want to check it out, because it's Phil's favorite, and Phil
    has good taste. :)

    Hey all...

Found out some cool, yet depressing info today. Fates Warning will be
co-headlining a European tour with Conception starting in May, I believe.
Elegy (another incredible band) will be the opening act. Depressing? To a
resident of the States...yes. All you European Jammers...you are the
luckiest people alive. I remember seeing a post about a
Superior/Stratovarius show awhile back. Also, Angra is supposedly coming
(or has been already). I can't fathom what it would be like to see any of
    these bands (besides FW).

    Hmmm...I'm depressed.

    Later...

Same thing happened to me. It was actually through my parents that I
got into him. They were watching the same show and my dad told me to
check out the violinist and bassist trade solos (he knows the type of
music I like and actually loves most of the instrumental stuff). I
found myself watching the whole special..Yanni composes some real cool
shit, nothing mind-bending..but cool nonetheless when you're in the mood
    for something lightwieght and complex.
It always cracks me up when people see my CD collection and find Yanni
"Live at the Acropolis" next to DEATH "Symbolic" ("Inside Crystal
    Mountain evil takes its form..ahhh)

Anyway, Yanni is cool. Great "uplifting" sounding music..fave is
    "Acroyali/Standing In Motion".

.also, does anyone else have the soundtrack to "Last of the Mohicans".
I love this one!!! Evil, brooding, celtic music...interesting to say
the least, not to mention one amazing movie.

Enough blabber..must continue my search for SYMPHONY X (which one is
better "Damnation game" or "Divine Wings....." I'll probably get both
at the same time anyhow..I'm addicted like that.)

Did anyone hear the new ELDRITCH yet!?!?!?! I saw that "Headquake"
was released last month and am going apeshit in getting it..I must have
    more ELDRITCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    cheers,

So like a true juvenile, you bring it to us, as though we care to be the target of your little problems.

    > Madsman: 1st, you have no right to complain about egos...

    Please do explain this.

    > Now...real DT content, because this is like, cool. (And yes Mads, Ryan >really DID put 9 new songs on a page! Don't cry, it's okay. They're cool.)

Fuck you. I have a major problem with this, as ANY DT fan should. The band understood the possibility that they'd be bootlegged. They asked us VERY reasonably not to spread it around, because they knew their album wouldn't be out that soon. It's NOT COOL to have music you've worked on for over a year spread like this, before the album is released. It's NOT COOL to go against the wishes of a band that played concerts in the US to tide their loyal fans over. There is no excuse for ANYONE here on the jam to make this stuff public, when the band asked US SPECIFICALLY NOT TO. It's a matter of ethics, which you couldn't possibly understand, because you're a jag off. I PERSONALLY don't want to be part of anything with that complete lack of integrity and disregard for the intentions of a band we're trying to help. This is FUCKED. Of course the songs are good. But this is just so ridiculously mean spirited... it really makes me angry. It's not possible to think that the band wouldn't be vigorously opposed to this. Events like this can prove DETRIMENTAL to a band in the position that Dream Theater is in. Anyone that absolutely HAD to have this material before the release could have found it through the various other jammers that had this shit. To make it available on the web and then to advertise it on the jam in front of 900 people is beyond low. It's coming to the point where I'm more embarrassed to be a jammer than I am proud to be a Dream Theater fan.

Rain King, you'll never ever catch up with me.

I own the Altura CD. I happen to like the music a lot, but never really got the lyrics, partly because I seem to focus naturally on the music and have a hard time comprehending the lyrics unless I read them, which I can't normally due to my blindness. Ivanhoe, I have been looking for this forever and can't find. Symbols of time, I have on a compilation tape that a jammer made for me. I want to hear more, can somebody copy this CD for me onto a high quality tape? That would be cool.

I really have to kick myself in the butt to get this one. I was listening to this in a used CD shop, and my first impression was "Wow, this sounds great! I forgot what it sounds like now, but I thought it was really neat to use orchestration with electronic instruments. It sounded fresh and adventurous. I liked the storyline and the liner notes were illustrated with lots of neat drawings.

I was at a Barnes and Noble (music section) and they had all of his CDs on the CD jukebox. I read some notes about him and three of his albums fall into the JR Tolkien storyline. He said that he was deeply inspired by Tolkien.

Speaking of Tolkien, a lot of prog bands are known to have the Tolkien concept in their albums. I recently got Par Lindh and Bjorn Johnsson's _Bilbo_ which is based on the the Tolkien theme and it is quite good. These guys are from Sweden and they play a number of electronic instruments. Some r.m.p folk have hailed it best of '96. I haven't got a good listen to say its the best of, but if you like multi -instruments (oboes, flutes, synths) with quiet and dramatic moments with a folky touch, this may be right up your alley.

Another band Glass Hammer _Journey of the Dundan_ (sp?) first album has the same concept. Too bad its out of print. I got _Prelandra_ instead which is a C.S. Lewis concept album and it a good album. If you like multi-layered melodic synthesizers, squeaky clean production this one is for you. Some of the keyboard soloing is reminicent of Keith Emerson. A couple of the songs stand out, others are mellow and slow to build up. Nice keyboard adaptation of Mendleson's Fourth Symphony, 4th movement.

Ok, since there some jammers that are into new-age, anybody into Tangerine Dream? _The Dream Mixes_ is one of the most underrated albums that I know of. The music is instrumental, new-age, light techno, with great keyboard hooks. I can't find anybody that agrees with me.

I also would recommend Arkenstone's "in the wake of the wind." Granted, this is the only Arkenstone I have, but it's really good.

Ahhhh yes. I can finally talk new age on the jam. Kitaro is pretty cool. I'm sure die hard Yes fans know that Jon Anderson sings a couple o tracks on Kitaro's album "dream." (1992)

I think Kitaro's best album is the Silk Road parts I and II. I remember looking at my brother's very diverse CD collection a few years ago and stumbled onto this CD. I thought to my self that this was probably just another one of my brother's 80s hair bands. Just for kicks I played it and was very surprised. This double CD is very relaxing. Would be very theraputic for those freak jammers out there.

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids...

Rick, in reply to a post I made about Yanni, remarked:

    >> And Phil, I still have your David Arkenstone recommendation on my "things to >> get" list. Unfortunately, it seems I've spent much of my funds on DT >> bootlegs over the last several months, so as soon as there's postive cash >> flow, I'll let you know what I think of it.

Then KorgX3 got into the act with a question:

    >That wouldn't happen to be Quest of the Dream Warrior wouldn't it? >Love that one. I also recommend the Spirit of Olympus with some >Russian dude name Kostia (who I have never heard of) and another kewl >dude named David Lanz. I don't recall which one I recommended to Rick, but if I was true to form I probably told him to get "In the Wake of the Wind" first. Knowing me, I probably also recommended he get "Quest of the Dream Warrior" and "Return of the Guardians" as well, just to round out the trilogy. And probably "Another Star in the Sky" for something a little more different.

And, as long as we're on the subject, why not "Valley in the Clouds" and "Citizen of Time" too, as well as "Island" (with Andrew White).

    >I really recommend Quest of the Dream Warrior. It's my fave.

"In the Wake of the Wind" stands as my favourite, but all three of the concept albums in the trilogy are excellent. "Return of the Guardians" has a different sound from both of the other two, though.

Hell, as long as we're on new age music, here's a few more recommendations for everybody:

Michael Lee Thomas: "Fresh out of Nowhere" Jonas Kvarnstrom and Stefan Schramm: "Pacific Blue" and "Pacific Blue II" Kitaro: "An Enchanted Evening" Jonn Serrie: "Ixlandia," "Tingri" John Tesh: "Live at Red Rocks" Michael Gettel: "Intricate Balance," "San Juan Suite" Pete Bardens: "Further Than You Know" James Reynolds: "Beyond The Mind's Eye" (this album also features David Lanz on many tracks)

    That'll do for now...

    Cheers, Phil

Randy Roos, "Primal Vision" Friedemann, "Indian Summer" Pangea, s/t Michel Sanchez, "Windows" Pat Metheny, "As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls" (borderline New Age, methinks)

I dont know if I would ever be as militant as Ben gets in my opinions (although I am not saying I dont agree with a lot of what he says) but sometimes my over-riding love of DT is the only thing that keeps me on the list : I like this list for info on new bands etc. and I have profited myself ( in a musical sense), news on DT and also concert reports(Ie Fix shows)

What I dont like about some of the shit on the list is the ill-informed nonsense that sometimes appears particularly the rough ride Derek seems to get. It seems certain people "have it in for him" simply because his name is not Kevin Moore. This is immature to say the least : 2 examples

    1) a week or 2 ago whilst on the subject of Ethyl Mertz (a quite valid subject) some deadhead said (rough quote!) :"... Well I dont think it really matters because I have heard that Derek has not been involved in the writing of the new material..." - note "I have heard" invariably means it has been made up by this person as a pretence of muck raking. 2) in the last couple of days someone wrote that they did not like the direction the band was going with Derek in and they would prefer Kevin any day. Fact: the bands sound changed from I&W to Awake with KEVIN in not Derek. Fact: Kevin (not Derek) left the band (ie not pushed, sacked) because he no longer had his heart in the music that DT(including himself) had written. Fact: ACOS was virtually written when Kevin was in the band - unless I am wrong not many people on this list know who(individually) or whether as a band made the changes from Subconscious etc. to make what appeared on the CD. Therefore the "New Direction" which this guy doesnt like can only come from material which appeared at the Fix shows. Well according to a few reports on this list the keys were somewhat buried in the mix during a few of these shows and in any case as point 1 proves this "New Direction" has nothing to do with Derek as "I have heard" that he was not involved with the writing.

I get the feeling that to some people on this list Kevin has become a God (probably even more so since leaving the band - ie. notice what good career moves Elvis, Hendrix and Cobain made by dying - selling more when dead!) and that Derek will be discredited at every turn no matter what. Making a God out of a human (no matter how talented) is a very dangerous decision for anyone to make and I urge some of the people who do this (not just to Kevin but maybe other band members and other famous people) to take a long hard look at themselves and wonder if it is a really healthy thing to do.

Please do not get the wrong idea - I love Kevins lyrics and his musical input (I&W is my fav. CD of all time) but he left DT and to "diss" Derek simply for being his replacement is highly unfair. He seems a really nice guy aswell as being very talented and I commend him for the job he has so far done, having to live up to someone else (something Kevin did not have to do) and seemingly not losing his head (Some of the shit printed concernig him would certainly upset me if I were he).

Looking forward to the new DT CD Peace be with you and humanists everywhere bless you (in a non-religious way)

Mark - DT '97 - prepare for musical heaven!

    Gary Cleghorn,

-I think we all know that Ben is a complete GOBSHITE -who never posts ANYTHING to do with DT, but i'm a little -tired of this thread so please no more flaming.

Of course, no more flaming after this geek makes a post right?...Look, Even Ben flamed me, I really don't care. Before he left the jam, he was a damn cool kid. He was still on IRC occasionally and he just as cool then. He's come back to where, some ass named Lars, had the stupidity to make an idiotic statement that has no validity. Ben's got a right to be pissed at all those people who have flamed eachother back and forth. Ben, even though he's been mad, is still a cool guy because he doesn't back down from what he starts.

So, ya little pecker head, if your going to flame someone, at least do it like the rest of us and put some validity to it. By the time these fights are finished, the jam is gonna look like Iraq after the Gulf War, with an 100 hole golf course to boot.
