Some new stuff I got lately...promos.

Flotsam And Jetsam- Swatting At Flies

Awesome promo backed with an ultimate heavy F+J song called Date With Hate.
The song starts off like something from Cuatro but immediately goes into
something almost as heavy as the Doomsday days.

Flotsam And Jetsam- Wading Through The Darkness

Another awesome promo with the radio version, album version and the very
cool industrial strength mix (remixed by KMFDM). The remix is something I
can not describe...any fan knows how weird WTTD sounds anyhow, well imagine
tripping on acid and listening to it.

Thats about it..I also got a Warrior Soul (don't know if theres many fans of
them on the list) video with videos for The Losers, Downtown and The
Wasteland. Have yet to watch it though.

6 or 8 jams in the mailbox with nothing but big mouth arguments going on.
    Take it to private email!

Grow up...perhaps everyone under the age of 25 should unsubscribe until
you learn some manners...apologies to the well behaved that fit in that
    category!

And now for some DT content -- speaking of Scarred...I just might have
to proclaim this to be John Petrucci's signature guitar solo. I personally
believe it to be his best piece of work not counting the blazing 3 way
harmonies of keys, bass, and guitar which I don't count as guitar solos...

Coundtdown is easily my favorite Deth album ,cuz of its tightness and
IMO cool production sound. But Rust in peace is easily their best or at

i never said appreciate meant "like." i'd probably say the same thing in response to adam cook's post, so instead of quoting it let it be known here- i'm sticking with this thought. my choice of music isnt country, but i can understand how people can like it, i dont think it "sucks" there's things i can appreciate about it. so to restate- its not bullshit, it just may be badly put, because i'm getting a lot of responses to what i wasnt aiming at. i'm no more pefect (in fact, far less) than anyone else here, so i'll just try and clarify here. so if the tunes dont do anything for you, no biggie, i'm the same way, but if someone was dissing on a group my friend liked that i didnt care for i would help him defend it, and could, because while it doesnt "tickle my pickle" theres things to appreciate.

Tell you what. If you can get Bafu on the IRC, THEN I'll show up. :) Even way back when the Jam rocked the IRC channel was pretty dull until Ben or Bafu showed up. Everyone just went online, and kind of waited there for one of them, and then we were ready to rock.

I still stand by my comments about Megadeth based on the Megadeth fans I've met, but a few people here need to stop being so easily offended and so gullible.

Trolling, trolling, trolling. Nice way of showing that if can turn around and bite other people in the ass, too. Unless of course, you are serious about the above comments, in which case, you'd better reread the original comments.

You know, I have a feeling I brought this on, somehow. I was just on rec.music.artist.flamew^H^H^H^H^H^Hqueensryche, saying on what a nice refined place this place was, and how were really laid back, and don't ever FLAME nayone for their beliefs, we just go...hey, that's cool, and drive on. Guess I was mistaken. On another note, who here likes the new Aerosmith CD? It comes out officially tonight at midnight, but I heard it last week on WBCN. Good stuff, and dare I say, I think it has SOME progressive elements to it, although not many, as not as many as the new Queensryche album, which does also have some progressive elements to it, but more (I feel) than the Aerosmith does. And the lyrics to the Queenryche album rule, or so I've heard. ------------------------------------

    >It seems that either A) no one can stick by their guns anymore,

Why do some people think you have to put out the same album every time or your not sticking by your guns. People change over the years and that usually shows up in the band's music. DT doesn't sound ANYTHING like they did on WDADU. The first lp was a much more raw and aggresive album then the stuff they've done since. Don't you think if DT put out WDADU every release people would get bored. It may work for AC/DC, but their record sales have plummetted from their peak in 1981, even though they still play arenas.

    >B) the record companies and MTV have complete control over a band >and their sound, as I believed for quite some time,

I agree 100%. That's why I want DT to go to an indie label, so they can play the music THEY want and not what the label wants.

    >C) these band are TRULY influenced by the "alternative," "let's prentend >like we dont know how to play our instruments" corporate rock trend, which >I highly doubt.

I hate the term alternative because by being popular it ceases to be alternative. But not all the bands considered Alternative are bad bands. As far as being influenced by them, I think Metallica was to an extent, but you're influenced by what you hear, and up here in the SF area it's almost exclusively Alternative with no room for Metal or Prog hardly all, except for that prog super-group CALL TO ARMS. Anyway I don't see how anyone who's listened to LOAD can honestly say it wasn't influenced to some degree by alternative, but I still say it's a Heavy Metal album. It's just not the kind of Metal that 'Tallica did in the 80's.

(I don't want to start a Load sucks/Load rocks arguement here, just stating the facts as I see them).

    >From what I have heard of the new Megadeth album, they havent given >in, and niether have Aerosmith (at least not to the same level).

Iv'e heard Zero of the new 'Deth and only the single from the new Aero, and that Aerosmith song sounds like every other song from either PV or GAG; in one word: Shit. But that's just one song, the rest of the album could rock for all I know.

    >I seem to remember quite a few Metallica fans who just hated the Black >Album when it came out,

/me raises his hand in agreement

    >but it seems most of them quite like it now.

I don't hate it as much as I used to, but I wouuldn't go so far as to say I *like* it.

    >The same thing has happened with Load.

Love LOAD! Have ever since I heard it.

    >the same thing happened with ...And Justice For All, Master of Puppets, >and even Ride the Lightning!!!

When I first heard them MOP was the latest release and I thought it rocked. Didn't like AJFA much because I thought they were playing it safe by basically remaking the first three albums, but I liked it better then the Black one.

    >The truth is that people are really never pleased by the new music of >their favorite bands.

I usually am pretty easy to please when it comes to music. There are very few albums I really don't like. I can listen to The Black album without wanting to break the disc, but I'd rather listen a different Tallica CD.

    >My advice: if ya dont like it, dont listen to it. If ya like it, all the >more power to you!!

    Absolutely, I couldn't agree more.

    >And so what if Friedman doesnt know as much theory as Petrucci.. he >also happens to be very creative and original, and he knows and uses all >the different odd-time ideas and scales that Petrucci uses. He just doesnt >know how to exlain what he is doing in the standard, accepted way, and he >could easily learn it if he really wanted to take the time!!

You GO boy! Marty Friedman is an awesome guitarist. Eddie Van Halen never took a lesson in his life and I wouldn't exactly say he sucks. In fact I hear EVH in JP's playing. I have a video of a benefit Marty did in Chicago last year for Jason Becker and I thought he shredded.

    >I've even heard that the guys Megadeth are at least somewhat fans of DT, >and that the guys from DT are death fans!!

I had a related story from last month. I went to see Pantera in San Bernardino and I wore my shirt from the KI$$ concert I went to in Detroit and people started giving me shit saying that KI$$ sucks. Well, I have a boot audio of Pantera where they play Cold Gin at the show and the guys are BIG KI$$ fans. I felt like telling them they couldn't be real Pantera fans or they'd know that Pantera was influenced by KI$$, but I figured it would've been pointless becausse the people that were saying that seemed like they had no brain so there was no reasonin with them.

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids...

    Chung Ng inquires:

    >I may get laughed off the Jam for bring this up, but...does anyone listen to >Yanni? I had never heard him play and figured that he was just "Kenny G on >the piano", but I saw his "Live at the Acropolis" on PBS this weekend and was >pretty blown away. If anyone has any recommendations on his CDs, please >let me know.

Well, let's see. There's little doubt that _Acropolis_ is his best-known and most accessible performance. It's also, IMHO, the album with the best sound, since most of the albums prior to it were performed entirely on keyboards, while the _Acropolis_ performance had the benefit of a full orchestra as well. Since then, Yanni has released little new material, though he has produced several compilation albums.

If you liked the PBS performance, I highly recommend you get the home video version. It has additional songs and esoterica that weren't seen on the PBS special. The CD version is good, but again, four of the songs from the video version were cut from the CD, and some songs were shortened a trifle. BTW, if you do pick up the video version, the track listing on the back is shuffled around (for reasons unknown). If you want, I can post or mail a corrected list.

Other good Yanni discs that are worth getting:

_Chameleon Days_, _Keys to Imagination_, _Out of Silence_: All of these are recorded almost entirely on keyboards. The sound is a bit dated by now, but the compositions and arrangements are still excellent. Also worth picking up is _In My Time_, a more reflective, piano-oriented album.

There are several others, but that should start you off well.

    Clark Abel says:

    >This may get a few laughs, but I consider [[Megadeth's]] Rust >In Peace to be something of a speed metal masterpiece. There are some very >progressive (at least by my definition) elements to this album, and some >absolutely insane solos. But I also feel that each major album has gone down >in quality since then.

Hm, somebody else articulated pretty much my exact thoughts. Very true, Clark.

    Clark also remarked:

    > My other question is about Kenny G. I've never really heard much of his >stuff, so I'm not defending him, but why does everyone here think he sucks so >bad? I can tell that he's obviously not a real jazz player, but so what? Is he >just really overrated? Would JP kick his ass in a guitar/soprano sax duel?

Mm. Much like Yanni and John Tesh, Kenny G. seems to be made a target by many listeners just because he a lot of what he plays is "new age" or "ambient" or "mood" music. Quite frankly I really don't understand what all the fuss is about; I think Kenny's a talented sax player and I enjoy his music. It's not especially complex or thought-provoking, but it's pretty and it's often relaxing.

As for Jon Parmet, who posted a top 15 list including:

    > 2. Those apocalyptic words: "Ladies & Gentlemen: The John Tesh > Philharmonic Orchestra!"

...would kick ass, in my opinion. :) :) I also happen to like Tesh's music. Doesn't mean I couldn't laugh at the list anyway. The truth is, Tesh has quite a following in the new age community of listeners, but little respect anywhere else. I don't understand that either; he's a good pianist and composer and I like his music as well. I guess it goes back to the "new age lack of respect" thing.

Stick a fork in me, I'm done.

    Cheers, Phil

Okay, first of all, I apologize to Eric LaRue. That was just the first post in the jam I read and replied to in that letter...didn't realize it was going to get worse than that. BUT, after that post...the jam was pretty much crap. I replied to it like I saw it. Dunno, do you guys really enjoy reading about whether Megadeth sucks or not? If so, I apologize for that too...but I doubt it. All you guys commenting on my bad attitude...well, yeah. It was sort of a combination of boredom and being upset that the Jam isn't as cool as it used to be (in my opinion [for all you easily upset jammers]). Madsman: 1st, you have no right to complain about egos...and 2nd, if you think I take myself seriously when I talk about my drumming abilities, you need a new sarcasm detector. Nothing sucks more than a bragger. Now...real DT content, because this is like, cool. (And yes Mads, Ryan really DID put 9 new songs on a page! Don't cry, it's okay. They're cool.) I'm super hyped about DT right now. The new stuff is just so damned different...from anything. In all honesty, the music sounds like no prog I've heard before..not too many odd times or super intricate passages (though there are a few), but by definition, it is progressive. DT is progressing. If I didn't recognize each band member's specific personal playing styles (and I don't sometimes), then I really could be tricked into thinking each DT album was a different band. They're doing what I hope to accomplish in the future...covering many different styles of music, yet retaining their own style within it in the meantime. The stuff is just getting less and less traditional prog..James even growls on one song, and isn't trying to sound pretty. It's like..hallelujah! A band realized that the same thing isnt cool over and over again. I can honestly say that the new DT sounds like nothing I've ever heard. Originality is the main factor in what music I like and dislike. See, I've done it. DT content. Told you I'd try to help. Now quit flaming me and let's talk about music. Thank you. Goodbye.
