Yes, this is bullshit. It is possible to appreciate all forms of music, but if somebody doesn't appreciate all types of music it doesn't mean that they can not appreciate music truly. I like a few types of music and hope to get in other genres in the future, but dammit I f00kin hate rap and country and will always stay away from it. It doesn't do anything for me.

Humorously enough, I don't want one of these shows for the new stuff, which I would rather hear officially recorded. I want the incredible last twenty minutes (at least that they did at Birch Hill), which completely blew me away. I want my friends that couldn't go to hear what I keep talking about, and to re - live the memory of that. (I wish I could re - live the part where I went into the dance part of BH, when DT was finished, and walked from great music into a room full of scantily clad women! Well, a guy can wish, can't he? :)

Marty Friedman claims musical ignorance, but he teaches scales and arpeggios, as well as soloing over chord changes in his videos. I think he just wants people to believe that he knows nothing... but the fact of the matter is, with the material he's taught in his videos and his columns, as well as the things he plays in his solos, it's clear that he knows some theory, and has some musical knowledge. Regardless of what he says. As for his inability to mute, I think perhaps that you haven't heard enough of his playing to make that call. I don't say this because I know what you've heard... I say this because I know what I'VE heard, and I know what Friedman solos I've learned to play. You can't play one of Friedman's solos off Rust in Peace without good muting technique. Muting is not the ability to put your palm on the strings until it makes your picking sound like Pantera-chunk. Muting is the ability to keep unwanted strings from ringing out. Marty is a master at this. He Can and HAS also done the Pantera-chunky muting (Which is called, by the way, Palm Muting). Don't get me wrong. I fully believe he was unimpressive at the clinic. Marty has pulled an Eddie Van Halen. He's become comfortable in his fame and has stopped putting the effort in. But his solos, from 1987's Cacophony "Speed Metal Symphony" through Megadeth "Symphony of Destruction" are enormously technical and extremely well constructed. He's not overrated; he's just gotten very lazy.

    > I'm aware of it. Just that this has been an especially long low. I don't > doubt it'll get better when (if?) the album comes out. But until then...

You haven't been back long enough to make that distinction.

    > No. I just said I was sorta bored, and I'd probably be back later. And > whaddya know..here I am! <thwap>

Apparently he has better memory retention than you, Ben. When you left, you DID give the slap in the face "I'm leaving" message. You said we're all boring and the jam had gotten very lame. That was unneccessary. If you don't like it, do something about it, or leave. Also, you said "I may be back, but I wouldn't bet on it." or something to that effect. Quite the opposite of what you claim to have said. I can get you a copy of the post you sent if you want. I have it framed on my wall (j/k).

    > I never claimed to have any validity. I'm full of bullshit, in fact.

The jam is not the same place it was when you left. There are fewer flame wars... we've been pretty civil. Your last post belonged in private e mail. None of what you said had ANY relevance to the jam.

    > Are you insane? You can't just unsub after you flame 700 people.

If you can't show some restraint, and reasonable judgement before you post, you CAN unsubscribe. We weren't crying when you left. I have respect for you, but it dwindles when you make us digest this rubbish.

    > That was good constructive critcism. But I didn't want to criticize > constructively, or i would have.

Then guess what? You're being a dick. We don't need another condescending asshole to come here and shit on people for no reason. You are hardly one to talk about egos, with the way you talk about your drumming abilities.

    > I didn't hear anybody complaining.

Of course not. To do that would require two things: A). You'd have to shut up for a second, and B). you'd have to listen.

    > I recorded 9 new DT songs and put them up on my web page for any of > you who are interested.

I may be a little behind the times here (still catchin' up with you crazy-ass fast-paced 'Jammers), but I think John Tempesta would be an awesome addition to any unfortunate alterations in the DT lineup. You may remember him from his work with Testament on _Low_ and with White Zombie on _Astro-Creep:2000_. Talk about one crazy-ass muthafucka!

Speaking of crazy-asses (I am in a weird mood this morning...pending final stress, I believe), I pulled out my _Countdown to Extinction_ disc last night due to all of the talk of Megadeth over the past few days. Man, I forgot how tight this album is. I can not really consider myself a "fan" (I only have CtE because I heard 7 of the songs on Pirate Radio [remember them, L.A. 'Jammers????] during an interview with two of the members back when it came out), but I give major kudos to the band on this one. Simply awesome. Nice oxymoron, eh?

If anyone has any recommendations on his CDs, please let me know.

It's faster if you use your credit card, but then you would have to order over $70. Ken Golden has some prog metal stocked (Ayreon, Strat, Therion..). His web page doesn't show these titles because it is not updated. But he does reply to email queries soon.

I have had fast delivery from him. (5 business days)

In response to Chris Ptacek's (sorry if I butchered that) comments about the quality of Marty's work going downhill, are you referring specifically to Youthanasia? This may get a few laughs, but I consider Rust In Peace to be something of a speed metal masterpiece. There are some very progressive (at least by my definition) elements to this album, and some absolutely insane solos. But I also feel that each major album has gone down in quality since then. But I digress. Point is, Marty's playing, as usual, seemed like the high point of Youthanasia to me. I really don't think he's gotten lazy at all. Sure, the solos got shorter, but that was probably more Mustaine's doing than Marty's. And we all know that if Marty argued, his ass would be kicked out of that band in about 1.3 seconds. So my question is, were you referring specifically to Youthanasia, or some other work I'm not familiar with? My other question is about Kenny G. I've never really heard much of his stuff, so I'm not defending him, but why does everyone here think he sucks so bad? I can tell that he's obviously not a real jazz player, but so what? Is he just really overrated? Would JP kick his ass in a guitar/soprano sax duel? -Clark

I check my inbox today to find 4 digests. I read them and find myself in the middle of a war zone. Hmmmmm...okay, well, I view this mailing list as a place for fans of DT to get together and discuss things in a civilized manner (or something close). We all most likely have the common bond of liking this band and should be able to draw from this bond the ability to hold intelligent discussions about musical interests and the like. I get enough tension in other environments, I don't think anyone wants to find it here. It is not as if we have to be here. It is voluntary because of our DT obsession. Let us make it a worthwhile source of information for all those who are interested.

hi all This weekend I went on a binge and bought new music. I was in the local Media Play and found stuff I thought I'd never see in Ogden, Utah. Echolyn-As The World. When I first saw this on the rack my jaw hit the floor. I've never heard this but seen it mentioned here on the jam lots so I bought it from your recommendations. Well, unfortunately I didn't like it. Why? I like a little more 'balls and chunk' <tm> in my music. Now, I'm not saying 'they suck' or anything like that. Musically, they are quite progressive and tight-no complaints there. It's just too mellow for me to hold my interest. I kept wandering and stopped listening several times throughout the disk. I played it about 8x and just couldn't get into it. In short, not my cup o tea. So, I returned it and picked up QR's Warning. I knew I liked it and had to laugh at the '84 pix of them-hilarious. While I was there, I noticed they had several others there mentioned on the jam but never heard:

World Trade-Euphoria. Someone who has this please email me and tell me what they are like.

Prong-lots of stuff. I'm not familiar with these guys-they had about 8 Cd's. Again, if you know about them email me.

Picked up GC's first album for $6-great deal. Not sure about this as I haven't had much time to listen to it, but what I've heard is ok.

They had lots of Fear Factory. Got to preview one of them, not my cup o tea again but for different reasons.

They had Silent Man single for $10-already have it.

The rest of the stuff I bought, you wouldn't be interested in.

Looked for Superior, Ivanhoe, Lemur Voice, Enchant, Magellan, Vaudvihxl, VanDen Plaas, Edwin Dare-got the usual dumb looks and 'never heard of em' replies.

Sorry to ramble, but being able to find some of the above here was really quite a shock. I'm starting to believe that Utah may be pushing the 20th century after all :>.

    Later, Wilmo

    Dear Jammers:

This is my first post in a long time, as I dont have time except on weekends to even READ the jam usually. Hopefully it isnt my last post, but I am getting quite pissed at some of the discussions going on here. You know who you are...

--------------------------------- I completely understand such topics as wether or not the new Queensryche CD is any good, and appreciate as I do not have it yet and when it does come out, I gotta decide if its crap that I shouoldnt buy or if its worth my money (When is it out anyways?). Anyways, I totally have been expecting a big load (no pun intended) of crap ever since hearing the new song on the radio, and since Metallica has started what I think of as the new "metal-lite" trend. It seems that either A) no one can stick by their guns anymore, B) the record companies and MTV have complete control over a band and their sound, as I believed for quite some time, and/or C) these band are TRULY influenced by the "alternative," "let's prentend like we dont know how to play our instruments" corporate rock trend, which I highly doubt. From wha I have heard of the new Megadeth album, they havent given in, and niether have Aerosmith (at least not to the same level). Lets think back a little bit... I seem to remember quite a few Metallica fans who just hated the Black Album when it came out, but it seems most of them quite like it now. The same thing has happened with Load. the same thing happened with ...And Justice For All, Master of Puppets, and even Ride the Lightning!!! This also seems to always happen to Rush, who cant seem to hold onto the same sound for more than an album or two. The truth is that people are really never pleased by the new music of their favorite bands. My advice: if ya dont like it, dont listen to it. If ya like it, all the more power to you!! If I didnt do this in the first place, I probably wouldnt listen to metal, prog, jazz, and fusion. Id be listening to a different alternative or rap group every week, whatever was on MTVs top 10 or 20 or whatever countdowns.

    -------------------------------------

I happen to be one of those Dream Theater fans who happens to be ALMOST equally a fan of Megadeth. I even own more Megadeth albums, singles, and videos (all 7 albums, 2 Friedman solo albums, 3 singles, 2 videos, and one of Marty's instructional videos) than DT albums and singles (4 CDs inc. LATM and ACOS, 1 video, and Petrucci's instructional video). DOesnt this mean that Megadeth is 'better'? NO!! I like em both. Whats wrong with that? And so what if Friedman doesnt know as much theory as Petrucci.. he also happens to be very creative and original, and he knows and uses all the different odd-time ideas and scales that Petrucci uses. He just doesnt know how to exlain what he is doing in the standard, accepted way, and he could easily learn it if he really wanted to take the time!! Ive even heard that the guys Megadeth are at least somewhat fans of DT, and that te guys from DT are death fans!! if this doenst say something to those of you who worship DT as gods and believe they can do no wrong (this is not an insult, I am the same way), then nothing would. If I hadnt found out that DT was influenced by Rush and old fusion stuff, I would not be into Rush and fusion today!!!

    ----------------------------------

ANyone else excited about the live shows coming through this summer?? Megadeth, Rush, OZZY AND SABBATH!!!!!!!, G3, Queensyche, Van Halen, and countless other prog and metal bands. This summer is going to seriously kick my ass.

In conclusion: Cant we all jsut get along??

A 15 year old from Arizona who can't shut up,

If the rides really were laughing at Lakeside Park, perhaps Neil really ought to quit smoking that stuff.
