    Hi Jammers,

yesterday was a great day because of T.M.Stevens playing in a little club here in
Hamburg, Germany. It was a great show and he really kicked ass. I didn't know his
music before but he blew me. Beside him there was Al Pitrelli on guitar. Great lineup.
If you ever have the chance to see them live get there !!! After the show there was an
open backstage and I've got my shirt signed "T M get funked up" and Al signed my jeans
shirt. When most of the crowd was gone the band was hanging around in the club. So I
got the chance to ask some questions. Al said that there will be a new Savatage CD
soon. They are waiting for him to return. He was looking a little funny because he was
wearing a womens hairband (ha ha). But he's a very nice, cool guy. Sometimes later he
asked if there is more beer on the tour bus and as it turns out that there was none
anymore we had the honour to invite him for a vodka (and my friend Andreas had the
honour to pay for it (hi hi)). I also had the chance to talk to the tour manager and
it turned out that he is also involved in ...
.. DREAM THEATER. So I asked him about the german tour and he said that it was only
planned to do gigs in Italy and the Netherlands but the band said that they have to
tour Germany as well. Thanx !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He also said what the problem with germany is. You wouldn't believe it:
TAXES. Foreign musicians have to pay very high taxes to play in germany. So that is
the reason why they only play a few gigs in germany. For you germans out there:
Fuck Waigel !!! (that is the minister of finances)
I also asked him about some of the older rumours and here are some definite answers
     1. Derek is not gay. But who cares ...
     2. _No_ double CD (we all knew that; DT is not selling as much as Michael Jackson)
     3. still looking for a producer for the new album
     4. they did not change the record company
     5. there might be _new_ instructional videos of John Myung and Mike Portnoy
        because of changing the endorser.
All the guys as T.M., Al and the tour manager were very friendly and very natural. No
star atitudes. Just normal guys who can play their instruments a little better than
the rest of the world. Caring about their fans. Great !

Additional story: The JP instructional video in europe
So it took them nearly a year to convert the video to the PAL format and when the
video was finally in the stores I couldn't wait any day longer to get it. I thought it
would be one of the happiest days in my life when I throw in the tape that was
packaged as JP instructional video and was also labeld as the JP instructional video.
When I turned on the video it became clear that it was _not_ the "John Petrucci" video
but the "John Patitucci" instructional bass video. Arrrrrrrrggggghhhhhhhhh!!!!
It turned out that there were 500 of these wrong labeled or wrong copied videos in
whole europe. So it took me another two weeks to get the right video. But it was worth
waiting for it. John Petrucci is a real guitar god ! But we all know that.

So that's about it. It already took me too long to write this. Have to get back to
    "lurking mode".

Still hoping for a DT gig in the north of germany. But it seems that Bremen is also
canceled like the Hamburg gig. Sh.t!

    Bye
     ANDI

It doesn't sound anything like what you would expect. Instant Clarity
has it's own sound. It is surprisingly light and pop sounding. If
    you're a fan, you'll buy it anyway...but be prepared.

I think that the band doesn't want people recording live shows because it if you don't, it might help have their record company allow them to put out an album soon. Think of it this way: Dream Theater has more of a cult following than a popular following, so the record company realizes that the fans (a lot of them) are recording bootlegs and have the material already, and if they release an album, then they fear it won't sell as much. If boots weren't recorded, then most people (except those fortunate to see DT live) wouldn't have an idea of what the new songs sounded like (fans also wouldn't complain about changes to songs such as ACoS). This might prompt the record company to allow them to put out a new album soon since there will be more anticipation, and when the album does come out, it will sell extremely quickly, and the record company will realize that DT does have a good following, so they won't be pricks about letting them get a new album out. That's my theory. ___ ___ (0 0)----------------------------------------------------------------(0 0) ||| Preston Scheuneman email: scheunep@river.it.gvsu.edu ||| ------------------------------------------------------------------------

..Recieved Enchant's 'A Blueprint of the World'. ..I really like, they might not be the most talented band out there, but they have a good sound. Although you can pick up aspects of other groups in their sound. Reply: They are pretty good. It's not surprising that they sound A LOT like Marillion, since Marillion guitarist Steve Rothery(sp?) produced ~half the CD.

Reply: Thanks to whoever posted the info on Mastermind a few months ago. I now own Vols. 1,3 & 4; 2 is bit harder to come by, since it is distributed through a different CO (not Prozone). Any help on locating a reliable source for Vol. 2 would be appreciated. Bill Berends does a great job on his Gibson w/ or w/o the MIDI hookups. Sounds A LOT like ELP synth.; some of straight guitar, esp. on Vol. 4, reminds me of John McLaughlin/ Mahavishnu Orchestra on 'Birds of Fire' I got Vols. 3 & 4 through M&M Music Progressive Rock : http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/4500/ Form my experience, I'd give them high marks. They appear to have a good selection of prog. CD's: new releases, classics, and hard-to-find. They confirm by email and I got both my orders within a week of ordering. Decent prices. I'm still waiting for Symphony X from Dream Disc, although I did get a response from them.

    Hey guys,

This is my last post on this topic. I have been moved by many good arguments on the bootleg issue. Chris P., I wish you hadn't felt it necessary to lower yourself to insulting comments like your "naive" or "mental disorder" jabs. You have failed to acknowlege the validity of the other arguments on this issue. You may not like what I'm saying, but to many people it makes sense and my opinions are motivated only by my wishes for the band's music to get out there to their fans and new listeners.

There are still very real holes in your argument, but I respect your overall point and pretty much agree with you now. I will say this, however...YES, I would prefer if the band was not doing shows right now. I'd rather they were in the studio. ALSO, I strongly agree with the guy that said how important boots have been to keeping the buzz going about DT. There are too few of us on the 'jam to be able to consider ourselves an adequate "buzz" about the band. The guys are just not getting enough promotion right now, and I fear the worst if they don't get an album out soon. Label execs are very near-sighted people, as we all know. They don't care about music, they only care about profits. In the eyes of most labels, the guaranteed sale of even 100,000 units is nothing to get excited about.

I like the new thread about crazy happenings at DT shows...I'll try to think of some once I get checked out for this darned mental disorder I'm supposed to have. Jeez, and I thought it was just a cold...shows how naive I am:) (No harm done, Chris, really:)

Just thought, in the middle of this boot debate, that I would point this out:

Whether distributing this boots is unethical or not depends on your morals, honor, and honesty (I personally think it's a slap in the face to the band, but that's beside the point).

However, no matter what your opinion about that, the FACTS are these: 1 - The band asked people not to tape/distribute the shows. 2 - People are openly trading these boots on the Jam. 3 - The band knows what goes on here on the Jam.

Which leads to the conclusion that if the band or their management really feel strongly about this, THEY COULD HAVE THE COPS AT YOUR FRONT DOOR IN 10 MINUTES!! No matter what your ethical view of the situation, if you are openly trading these boots, you are a felon and a damn stupid one.

I'm an admitted Closet Anarchist. I don't believe in causing direct harm to others but when someone tells me not to do something I need to be told why I shouldn't do it. 'Just because' doesn't cut the mustard.

Yes, we were asked not to distribute Fix Boots, but unless I'm given a really good reason why I shouldn't actively pursue the aformentioned, I see no reason why I shouldn't. Having copies of The Album prior to it's release does The Band no disservice. True, it spoils the Surprise for some, but it plays a very important role in keeping the Fan Base satiated.

Scott, taking this to the jam like it didn't have poor stories already ? I told you the reasons why it has taken me this long to get back to you and now I have to say it here again and reveal the real me. If you concider BAD TRADERS being those who are slow, then I am guilty. But I always pay back what belongs to others. Since a kid I was taught to be so damn conscientious (?)about everything that sometimes I get nuts with it.If I owed you even 1 cent you'd be surprised to see me actually paying it to you when other people would just forget about it ! I have a HUGE conscience unlike all the people I bump into. So you made me a criminal which I think I'm the least. So I'm taking this bad. I'm so damn law-abiding you'd be nuts to spend a day with me ! And I have to tell you this too: with all the traderfriends I have there's two things we give to each other. That's time and trust. Last tapes I waited from a friend took him 7 months to send me, but we trade like 80 tapes at a time, so you have to understand the time there. Even now I owe 40 tapes to that guy, but we trust each other and that's what we've done for the last 5 years to each other:trust. So Scott, you don't know me so you shouldn't say anything about me. I ALWAYS give back other peoples stuff.

    >3. Satu Reunanen (sorry if I misspelled that) - I sent him some TNT stuff >and he's supposed to send me some audio tapes. I've been emailing him and >he doesn't respond, maybe this will get his attention

This here isn't true. I didn't hear from you in few weeks until yesterday. That's why I thought you wouldn't mind me taking the time for writing to my 50 penpals as I didn't write them in 4 months because of this damn computer mess.So don't lie. And I told you I didn't have the money to buy your special tapes earlier. I have a whole animal farm here to feed. And how many times do I have to say..HIM HE'S HIM HE HIS Yep, I'm a girl. Sometimes I wish tho I was a guy so I could beat up all the idiots in this world who use other people and torcher animals and all bad..I hate to have these kind of conversations. I hate it when I have to "fight" with someone. Do I have to kill myself for my sins and for having so many other hobbies too ? I have a life and I tend to live it, even when other people are having this fire under their butts. And you'll get your tapes next week as I told you. (If my fever doesn't get worse).Put me in the list if you want to. Anyone having the desire to flame me just 'cos you're so good at it ?? Breathe on. Now let's have some conversation about Dream Theater please ! I rest my case.

I just saw an ad in the Village Voice which lists Nuno Bettencourt playing at the "Mercury Lounge" on April 10th. It's a Thursday, but I think I'm going to try and make it anyway. The number of the club is 212-260-4700 in case anyone is interested. I've never been to this club before, but it's probably a dive (like most of the clubs here).

So, Mike, when your favorite shirt gets a small hole in it, do you say "Oh well, the damage has been done, might as well rip the sucker in half"? When a rock hits your windshield do you follow it up with a sledge hammer? When the milk bounces off your cereal and splashes on the table, do you go ahead and empty the whole container on the floor? When you erase the wrong file on your computer, do you reformat the hard drive? When you miss your exit, do you keep going until you run out of gas? I sincerely hope the answer to all those questions is a resounding NO.

The point here is that even though the songs were recorded, the band doesn't want them circulating. We should LIMIT THE DAMAGE and not make their existance public. I'd love to hear them. I considered driving 5 hours (one way) to one of Portnoy's Clinic just to hear unfinished versions of the new material. If I hadn't driven 2500 miles round trip to YtseCon III, I would have driven up for the Fix shows. I want to hear the new stuff, but I will respect the band's wishes and wait.

I'm no lawyer, but having one bootleg (or even several hundred, as in my case) could hardly be considered a felony. I'd give you a misdemeanor, and even so, might have me end up with a $100 fine. And if I'm a 'damn stupid felon' for trading these shows (which I'm not), what does that make Mike Bahr? Is someone more guilty for trading a FIX 96 show than a DoE recording? I don't think so.

As some of you might know, I maintain the Ytsejam Birthday Caldendar on my homepage (feel free to drop by and add yours !). Right now, it has (only) 93 birthdays on it. The average age is 24,3 :-) 52 of those 93 are younger than 25. My personal favorite in Vol III _Tragic Symphony_. Vol. IV I haven't listened to much because it didn't grab me initially. But a lot of people are saying that Vol. IV is their best work. I like the first CD too. It is where the ELP influences show. It sounds like ELP going hard rock. The Mastermind page has a good selection of samples, so take a listen if anyone is interested. Between M&M and Laser's Edge, there is stiff competion. Both are great services. Symphonic is good too, but no web page.

What a truly revolting sentiment. So if the band isn't putting out albums when you want them, you aren't a fan?

    > Maybe they don't realize what this extended "dead time" is doing to their > loyal fan base!!!

The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines loyal as:

1 : unswerving in allegiance: as a : faithful in allegiance to one's lawful sovereign or government b : faithful to a private person to whom fidelity is due c : faithful to a cause, ideal, custom, institution, or product

I think they know that it does NOTHING to their LOYAL fan base. Only those people who are overly obsessive or don't really care about the band are unable to wait for the next album. Your sentiment does not sound at all loyal, to me.

Oh. In that case, my apology for being paranoid. I'm honored. I've been catching a lot of flak lately for my unpopular opinions. You can understand why at that time, I might think you meant that as an insult. :)

    > I am not denying the existence of the request, however, I have specifically > stated several times, that I was on hiatus when the supposed request was > made, and that after asking several times how exactly the request was > brought about, I haven't gotten a reply.

You ARE denying it, because you're clinging to the possible non-existance of the statement as your excuse for wanting to do a tape tree of this material. The reason you haven't gotten a reply is because the request came before the concerts occurred, back in Dismember--I mean December. It's not going to be easy to find that Jam. I don't remember if it was Neil (of the fan club) or D-Man (maintainer of the FAQ) that presented the request, but it came to the jam.

    > I'm not trying to use ignorance > as an excuse, however, I'm saying that from my past experience on the jam > (which is more than 90% of the people here), I have my doubts about the > content of the request.

In other words, we misunderstood "Please refrain from making any tapes of these shows.", or are lying about it?

    > I still get the feeling that the band (Mike P specifically) does not > want a European CD bootleg or a Mike Bahr CD bootleg > made out of any of the shows, which I wholeheartedly agree with. I don't > really think he would mind some people on the list having a taped copy. If > I'm wrong, please present the request, to the best of your knowledge, to me.

Why would they not want the music out on a bootleg cd, but not mind it on a bootleg tape? It would not be and IS NOT confined to the list. I guarantee, they mind. They fucking ASKED us not to do this!

    > It's getting to the point where I hope a European CD is cut, because then I > can get a copy and not have to feel responsible for violating anyone's > views.

You truly do not understand. Buying a cd of the music, and getting a free tape of the show from someone BOTH violate the band's trust. They didn't say "Please don't make tapes of the show, but if someone else has it on tape or cd, that's cool." The premise is that they DON'T want their new music out on ANY recording until it's out on their official release! What is so hard to understand about that?

    > I tried that, but I'm sick of posting the same responses to multiple > people, so I brought it back to the 'jam.

This list is not made as a convenience for you to break the band's trust in all of our names. Don't drag us down with you just because you're too fucking lazy to click cut and paste. It doesn't matter what we say here on the jam... you're going to do these boots anyways... that's VERY clear. But DO NOT use the jam to advertise this. The friggin' band reads this!

    > Case in point of why we need to start talking about the new tunes.

The only thing some of us need is a brick to the back of the head. There's more to life than DT.
