I haven't seen Megadeth live either (damn it! I still regret
missing that '95 Monsters of Rock here... Megadeth... Ozzy...), but, as
you said, Petrucci at least moves around on stage, while no one in
Megadeth seems to give a step out of place. :) Point to DT. :)
Anyway, I love the music of them both, and their shows would
rule. If it wasn't that way, I would have hated Satch's show here,
'cause although the sound and the music was great, his performance
sucked a lot (on second thought, which performance??? :) ).

/me gets up on her soapbox

Ok, this whole bootlegging arguement. STOP!! PLEASE!! This issue has been
beaten to death already!! Look, I'm not condemning NOR condoning
bootlegging - whether I do or not isn't the issue, the issue is - **no
matter how much you scream and yell and bitch about it, it ISN'T GOING TO GO
AWAY!!** Trying to rid the world of bootlegging is like trying to get rid
    of world hunger. It's impossible.

Now, I'm not by any means saying that people shouldn't express their
opinions - go for it, and all the more power to you! BUT, please leave it
at that. This flame war is fucking ridiculous!! I don't bother reading
this anymore, it goes straight to the trash the second I see a bootlegging
thread. It's cool to express your opinion, it's cool if people agree, and
there is ALWAYS the flip side where people won't agree, which is cool too.
It's called LIFE people. Get used to it.

I'm getting off track here - The fact is that bootlegging is INEVITABLE
(yes people, **INEVITABLE**) and CANNOT BE STOPPED. Therefore, there is no
damn point of getting blue in the face, bitching at people, and getting
angry. There are no winners here, and all this arguing is doing is pulling
this list apart. Go for it, express your opinion, let others do the same,
go ahead and argue it if you'd like, but don't go getting personal and start
lunging for the throat. I think we're all more mature than that. At least
    I thought I did.

Now, please, follow my lead, and everyone get the hell off their soapboxes.

/me gets down off her soapbox.

I'm pretty new here (only about 3 weeks actually), but what gets me about
this list is the amount of SHIT on it, and non-DT stuff.

Why do people have to have 20 line sigs at the end of their post, or long
DT quotes for? We're all fans, we know the songs, and we know that each
one of us is fanatical about the band. No need to demonstrate it by
wasting space at the end of a message. Why not sign off with one or two
lines, like NAME and E-MAIL address.

There is a newsgroup for "progressive" music, isn't there? Maybe all the
non-DT related stuff that deals with prog bands should be there instead
of cluttering up the 'jam. I was expecting a mailing list that dealt
primarily with DT, not a bunch of other bands, or unrelated threads.

Now that I've wasted space...see you all later.

    >probably say that I only like progressive music and not be lying, but

Thank you, Ben, for at least addressing the question I originally
asked. I still think it's a shaky argument, and I doubt that everyone on this
list would agree that most bands are progressive. That's certainly not evident
in the way the word is used. But still, I kind of like the sound of that: All
bands are progressive...just some a lot more than others.
Oh, you meant like dumbass in a good way? If this is really true, and
I suspect that it *might* be, then I'm sorry I called you a fucking idiot,
which, incidentally, I also meant in a good way.
And lastly, I don't hate country music because I think people want me
to dislike it. I hate it because it sucks. Seriously, though, I will be the
first (maybe one of the first) on this list to support other people's right
to listen to whatever the hell they want. I'm sorry if my last few posts have
not made that clear. That's why I threw that last paragraph into the first
post on this, and that's what I don't think you read.

Again, I don't post very frequently, but I'm always in the shadows and I
must send a tip of the Waxman's hat and a big 'ol "AMEN, BRUTHA!!" to
Cliff Totten in addressing all the whiners who are bitching about
distibuting boots of the "Fix" shows. I agree 250% that there is not a
"true fan" out there who would not buy a new release from DT THE FUCKING
DAY IT CAME OUT even if they had 10,000 different boots of the new
material and since EastWest refuses to remove their motherfucking thumbs
from their goddamned asses, why deprive said fans of the new material
other than to be a selfish asshole??!!

Isn't it mysterious that the bitches doing all the whining are the
people who ALREADY HAVE their copies of the "Fix" boots? Now they want
to preach to others the sins of duplicating so as to "respect the
band." I'm sure you're all burning your copies in respect as you type,
right??!! Why don't you just come right out and say "I got mine, so
fuck everyone else!!" That's exactly what you mean when you write such
    self-righteous shit!

Lemme tell ya something, I have the utmost respect for the band, and I
too would buy 10 copies of the new album if it EVER got released just to
support DT because they are THAT GOOD, but let's face the sad truth:
the corporate douchebags at EastWest/Atlantic no longer consider DT a
priority <what with metal being dead and all - HA!!> and it's only a
matter of time before they give the band the boot <which would be a
blessing because you know goddamn well if they've kept 'em out of the
studio this fucking long, they sure as shit aren't gonna do squat as far
as promoting the album>. I think the band should be shopping around for
a real label. If the petition has taught EastWest nothing about the DT
fanbase, then they don't DESERVE to keep a band of such immense talent
and I can assure you that I'll be the first in line to laugh in their
face when DT goes to another label and makes MILLIONS!!! So, in the
meantime of God knows how many months or years, why the hell not let the
fans get a fix, that's what the fuck the tour is all about!!

Sorry to rant, but I just can't stand selfish, self-righteous assholes
who are too ashamed to admit that they just want to keep the new stuff
to themselves <like others couldn't possibly be as big a fan as they are
and should be deprived>, so let's keep the hypocritical bullshit off the
    Jam, OK??!!

Heyyyyyy.... I heard Fates yesterday. First time I think. At least that I can remember. Probably heard it years ago, as the tapes have been sitting around for years but I never popped them in the deck...

I liked the overall sound of the band and the singer (what's his name again?) has a nice voice, but I think the first several songs he lacked a controlled melody. It's like he was going all over the place making it up as he went along. Also heard Crimson Glory again after several years...never had paid much attention to this one either, but I was digging through my old stuff wondering what the heck all these bands sound like... I did get into the first several songs, but it got tiring towards the end. And I really enjoyed Lethal after a few listens, but there isn't much variety amongst the songs. Word has it they got a new one out soon... Anyone heard it? And last, Vicious Rumors...didn't like this at all. didn't even get very far into the first song. J.Keifling

    SCREECH!!!

    Thank the maker for air-bags!

My dearest Clark, you must have forgotten to read Itchy's 8 Rules For Posting, haven't you? That's ok, though. I sympathize. For I, just 8 months ago, was as foolhardy as you. I propounded to everybody in my sight that I would kill them if they tried to play country music in my presence. I even told my best friend that I would stop the car and make her walk if she paused even for a second on a country station...even on the freeway.

<sigh> We are so foolish in our youth, aren't we?

Seriously, though. A loooong time ago, "longer now than it seems", there was a very intelligent discussion on the 'Jam concerning the two most important aspects of musicianship...emotion and technical ability. It was widely agreed upon that most bands possess one or the other, but rarely both. (Quick note: anger is a form of emotion, but it is also the easiest to present, therefore it is most often left out of this consideration.)

Now, on to my point. (Egads! I have one?) When I finally opened my eyes to country, I noticed that there was a high degree of emotion present in most songs, some even more than Tori (the resident heart-string tugger on this list). This is viewed by me, and others, as a welcomed break from the tech- nical intensity of Prog and other intense guitar music (e.g., Satch). Another thing I have noticed is that some of the songwriting is absolutely phenomenal, much better than a lot of other genres out there (I am not going to point fingers, but they are pretty easy to figure out).

One last thing: Country is closely related to blues...very closely. In my world, as well as other I have visited, there is a nice little path that can be taken. It goes: Country - Blues - Roadhouse - Rock - Hard Rock - Progressive Rock Kinda kewl, eh? (Quick note: this is not the only path to prog, just one of the many.)

I'm not saying that you can't slam Country, but I decided to stand up and give one of my favorite genres, as well the genre with the largest fan-base in America, its due.

Now, pardon me as I don my shit-kickers, my baggies, my DT shirt, and my extremely well worn flannel.

I knew this was going to happen...

As I re-read the post I just sent, I noticed that it appears that Satch appears to be my example of "intense guitar music". He is, but he is not. He is supposed to be my example of the "others" who are like me, the ones with the perception of break welcoming. Why? Well, not only does he play blues, he plays Rockabilly. "So that makes him cool!"

For those of you whom have not slammed it yet, check out Joe Satriani's self- titled album. A brilliant display of both undeniable technique AND emotion.

Okay, I'll post this again to shed some light on why bands have been/are called progressive. Originally the term "progressive rock" was used to discribe the bands that started blending stuff like classical/reggae etc into rock, and not sticking to the normal rock format ie: verse/chorus/verse/chorus/solo/chorus, but tried to take rock a step forward, ie: progressing. Bands that were in this original wave were bads like Yes, King Crimson etc. Now the music has pretty much stayed the same with little variations (krautrock, canterbury, psych, progressive metal etc...), so IMO the term progressive that are used on bands nowadays is a label, just like grunge or neoclassic, the progression was made in the late 60's/early 70's, nowadays you have bands that play it like it sounded in the 70's (ie: Yes, Spock's Beard etc) and bands that have mixed in other influences too, like metal, etc etc....

    Take care!

True. I think that at least I percieve Megadeth as more boring since they play bigger venues, where it takes some moving around to make it interesting. I saw them in a big ice hockey stadium and still they refused to move. When I saw DT, they played a really small place, so there wasn't all that much room to move around anyway. I count this as the best concert I've ever been to.
