BTW - I just got a video o fthe Rush Concert I went to at the San Jose Arena
on 11/20/96. It's a audience recorded just to the right of center stage and
it is of good generation (2nd or 3rd) and the complete show (:163). If anyone
is interested in a dub of this I would be willing to do it for blanks. Email

I don't intend any offense to you. I'm only holding you a mirror to show
you the contradiction when you say that they've gone to a more basic sound,
and that it's different. I'm sorry, but everyone nowadays is scraping
polish off their sound. Also, everyone is increasing the number of
influences in their music, simply because everything has already been
invented. The Book of Music has been written, but your music depends on
which pages you pick to read and in which order.
QR have become more mainstream from these two aspects and this gives me
undeniably an impression of them selling out. Now maybe that could change
after a few listens. My point is that the evolution of bands like Metallica
or QR reflects the evolution of the musical genre.

In the Toronto Sun yesterday, they asked a bunch of people about what
their latest buys CD-wise were. One guy, some executive type, said
something like this:
Awake from Dream Theater
It's great!
This is the best CD from the band, who are a lot like a mix of Metallica
and Rush. They are the most under-rated band around. Check them out.
I thought it was kind of cool...who knows, maybe someone WILL check 'em
out on that little blurb.
As for Mr. Derrick Collins on the 'jam here with the King Diamond stuff.
If you like the Graveyard, fine...but you haven't heard Abigail,
Conspiracy, or The Eye yet...the stories are better, the lyrics are
better, the music is better...
THAT is why I said "The Graveyard" sucked...compared to the above albums,
it does.
You'll see what I mean...

So when band members leave and are replaced by others and then the original
members get back together again for whatever reason, what do they tell the
replacment guys? "Sorry, we have to let you go because we'll make more
money with the original members."? Do they pay them off?
What if they were in the band a long time like the guys in KISS? I'm sure
they had some kind of contract.

greetings, well, i've been reading your different thoughts and
definitions on what prog is and i must say, there are some very good
ideas, well thought out and informative. while i actually agree with
most of these descriptions, i prefer not to label a band, whether it be
prog, metal, or whatever. half the time when we start putting labels on
certain music or groups, we paint them into a corner and possibley limit
the output of the band from there on. also by putting labels on someone,
although it may help to bring in some new fans, it may also chase off
some people. for example, i'm into metal, and also good old rock-n-roll
of about any kind if someone wants me to check out a new group, but the
band has been labeled alternative (yuck) it'll probably turn me off of
them before i give the cd a full audition, just because the idea of
alternative conjures up ideas of poorly done songs with very little
value as far as i'm concerned. and now i forgot why i started this note
so i guess it wasn't that important.....
i'm also sick and tired of the way the labels treat the band and the
fans. after all, aren't we the ones who keep them in business? if so
then we ought to make the rules. i know it doesn't work that way but
hell, i can dream can't i? we get these fat stupid ass beurocratic big
wigs at the company who think they know what we should and shouldn't
listen to. it just doesn't make sense to me, as someone else pointed
out, DT is a guaranteed money maker, maybe not as big as say aerosmith or
metallica, but allmost guaranteed better than some no named band, at
least DT has an established fan base and things should only get bigger
and better from there.
anyways, i'll shut up now seeing as how this makes no sense, jus rambling
i guess....

Hey guys,
Some people have been asking about a good source to buy Superior's
Behind. I got it from Knights of the Round Table (there's a link to them on my
website) in about 2 weeks. I think it cost around $15. Shipping is $5 for any
size order. Thus, I got a bunch of CDs from them, and now about half of them
are on backorder. Again, the ones that were in stock got here very quickly,
and right now anyway, Superior is in their stock.
I've only listened to Superior and Stratovarius' Episode so far (one
listen each, so these are first impressions). Both are good, progressive
melodic metal. I kind of prefer the style, singing and instrumentation on
Stratovarius a little better. I give Superior bonus points for putting timpani
in a prog rock song though. :)
Out of ten, I'd give Superior a 7 and Stratovarius an 8. Sorry to
rank you lower Bernd, but then again you don't have Jens Johannsen
in your band. :)
I'll probably report back again with more reviews (and perhaps
additional comments on repeated listenings). I'll also let you
know how long it takes for the backorder material to get to me.
It includes Angra and Symphony X.
To save bandwith, I've posted my opinions on the fix for '96 boot
situation to my webpage. If you really want to know what I think,
you can link there through my bootleg trading page. :)

Last night I had the priviledge to see a laser light show listening premier of the new Queensryche. I got to meet Eddie, Scott and Michael (they are great guys) and they signed my PL liner.
Now regarding the new disc: i know some people on here won't like it, but everyone should listen to it. sure, it is a different sound for them, but it is unmistakably Queensryche. the hard-core QR fans at the show all loved it. They were all disappointed with the mellowness of PL, and HitNF rocks more than anything they have ever done. it doesn't even sound that "grunge" to me. There are more grooves, they eliminated the 80's metal sound, and they try a lot of new sounds. Listen to the song "Saved". this is the song that convinced me that this cd is good. Damn, this song smokes.
I hope this list doesn't turn into a flame war from people who wish that the 80s never ended and deny that they are out of touch with music of "now".

To whomever asked about DT being on Elektra..... EastWest merged with Elektra records in 96 at sometime..I don't know the date exactly. I called up last year and talked to Derek Oliver and they all answered the phone....."Elektra Records" and I was like "WHA!!!!?" I never knew it happened. After talking to Derek he told me that EastWest had recently merged with Elektra. That call I made to him was in the begining of the summer of last year. So, the merge was done sometime before then. So, yes, DT in on Elektra and so is any other EastWest band.

After giving the new Queensryche album about 5 times now, I can say that it absolutely rules! It has such a different sound that it is really hard to quantify it as an amalgamation of other peoples sounds, so I'm not going to even try. Musically, this album is greatly different than PL. The sound is much rawer than previous albums, and there are very few keyboards throughout the album. And this is definitely no grunge album. There are some things that could be construed as alterna-riffs, but if you listen closer, things aren't what they seem. Lyrically, this album is STRONG. Queensryche has absolutely outdone itself. Examples like this make this a strong album: "Some people Fly...and some of us worry of touching the sun with wings. I know if I try, I'll get where I'mgoing, keeping my eyes on the sky." -Some People Fly Unfortunately, I feel they released the weakest song on this album first: Sign of the Times. I always cringe when Queensryche makes a preachy song like this... but all in a all, a very good album... IMHO.

Absolutely! I've always distinguished between Avec-Gabriel and Sans-Gabriel Genesis. The change occurred around And Then There Were Three.
I would also suggest checking out the band BRAND X. Phil Collins played on at least one of their albums. The song "Don't Make Waves" is probably the closest thing that could have been a hit. I'd categorize the sound as progressive fusion. Very skilled musicians.
Fates Warning - Chasing Time
There have been a lot of discussions as to which FW to buy first. I would recommend this disc as a first purchase for people dipping their toes into the FW pool. It contains songs spanning many years/albums of FW, so it'll give you an idea of which type of FW sound has more appeal.
I've been giving this disc a more careful listen (read obsessive :). I really dig this stuff and hope that they'll be touring in support of the new release. The tour where they backed up DT must have been quite the show!
So far, Through Different Eyes has my vote for the song with the most appealing groove (This has been my mission for the last few years: the groove that forces the head to move :) The way the guitar run introduces its own solo is right on! Call it progressive, call it straight-ahead rock, the fucker just plain rocks! The only problem is it's way too damn short a solo (a problem I that shouldn't be present on the new 55+ minute monster :)
A few questions for the FW gurus:
I noticed that TDE is the only representative off the Perfect Symmetry album. Can I expect more of this type of sound on the other tracks from that album? They could jam on this song all night and play nothing else and I would be happy!
Also, anyone know why my favorite and the band's most progressive (don't argue, it's a fact :) song, Leave the Past Behind, isn't on there? Just because there's 4 other songs from Parallels? :) Does someone need to be spanked? :)
And finally, this is probably going to sound totally off the wall but, does the part after the intro to At Fates Fingers (ie. the rest of the song :) remind you of the Erotomania? It's not the sound but more of, I guess, the way things are phrased and the rhythms.
A Pleasant Shade Of Gray should carry us through till what we crave arrives, eh? :) Isn't it supposed to be spelled Grey, though?
