I just read in the new _Metal Edge_ that the band is considering calling
the forthcoming album _Lines in the Sand._ Is this old news?

What difference does it make whether everyone has the same opinion
as you? I happen to like the album, and I'm no fan of grunge or
alternative. I don't like a few of the guitar sounds, but I can live with
that. Who cares if it's not a shred-fest? The songs are what count the
most.

I couldn't agree more. And I think _Hear in the Now Frontier_
qualifies as a refreshing alternative (pun intended) to Bush and Sonic
Youth. Figure that out.

Before you get off on a KISS-dicked-over-Bruce-and-Eric rampage, Night
Ranger didn't have any replacement guys. When they reformed to record the
fairly decent (first three songs are incredible) album "Feedin' Off The
Mojo," they did it AS A TRIO, meaning it was the original members, but
w/o Jack Blades and the keyboardist (whose name escapes me now).
Therefore, this new album that the orginial poster was referring to was
made without the firing of anyone.

I liked the first 1/2 of I&W the first time I heard it, but never got into
the second 1/2 until I re-purchased it recently.
As for "Awake", I was undecided but listened to it anyway for awhile. Year
& a 1/2 later popped it in and it stayed in the -one disc at a time- CD
player for six months replacing my six month "Hold Your Fire" phase.
Both albums had their times for me, and now I'm revolving the four DT CDs
continuously. I guess to answer your question... Awake is more of a vocal
album for me- the way JLB sings on that; I&W is more of instrumentation.
It usually doesn't matter though, which one, as long as I always have one
of them with me wherever I go.
BTW, Awake is really easy to listen to all the way through. It's kind of a
concept album to me. I&W is a "shuffleable" CD (any song, no particular
order).

Victor's the best rapper in the business -- the only one that can do it
*while* playing an instrument. And when you consider that instrument is the
fastest, most jaw-dropping bass in the history of music, well, it changes
the scope a bit, dunnit?

Hmm.. First listens are so difficult with their stuff now.. Didn't like
Promised Land when I first heard it.. Love it now. The new stuff is much
better on the first time through.. I guess they always seem to go a
different direction than I expect. I like the more developed and complex
harmonies, but wish the feeling wasn't quite so "happy, touchy, feely". I
was hoping for a bit darker sound, but i really wouldn't want them to write
Mindcrime for 10 years. Bands have to change of they get boring. This one's
a keeper.
Oh.. and to the guy who said he was glad they dropped the "80s metal
sound".. why is that sound such a bad thing? They never sounded like a copy
of anyone.. and they still don't.. This album is in now way as heavy as
MindCrime.. but I doubt they will every go back to that point in their life..
First Impression: More Textural.. good dark room listening..

Hrm... Not knowing anything more about the Fleckster... Could you
please direct me maybe to a place where I can find out more about
these guys? A website perhaps? :) As long as there's not a whole
rap album in the inventory, I'd likely buy it. I just need some
advice so I don't feel like I'm gettin screwed over. (Sorry, rap
just pisses me off that bad).

Was I ever. Within these ten days I've had this cd I've developed a serious
case of dependency in it. I've fallen completely, head over heels in love
with this album. No album since I&W has been able to do this to me. I just
have to hear "We Are Not Separate" every day (it should be deemed illegal to
include two of the best guitar riffs ever in one single song) a day. "Song of
Roland" (another killer guitar riff) and "Rise Again" (weird, pulsing beat
under the surface, lush keyboards and probably the most beautiful guitar solo
I've ever heard) and and the rest of the songs are amazing as well. If you
like progressive metal, there's no way you can go wrong with this album. As
much as I've loved Crimson Glory right from the beginning, they've never been
THIS good. And I've counted CG in my ten fave bands ever since the first album.
I think the thing Kevin meant by saying that the songwriting has become more
mature is that this is not the most technically amazing prog metal cd you're
going to find, but it's one of the most melodically beautiful and atmospheric.
IMO there's not one irritating sound in the sonic surroundings on this disk.
The vocalist Mark Vanderbilt has consciously determined not to sound so much
like Midnight (of Crimson Glory) he used to, because his singing on "Dominion"
isn't as flowing and effortless as it was on "Eternity". This suits me fine,
I'd imagine wearing the robe of Midnight's heir to throne can't be too easy
on a progressive metal vocalist. Besides, even sounding a bit strained, he
sounds more like himself now. But like Kevin said, there's an inner Midnight
inside of Vanderbilt and he can't prevent it from showing through at times. :)
IMO Thomas Youngblood the guitarist and songwriter dude should be jailed for
spreading sonic drugs! And IMO he could serve his time writing more of those
unbelievable, simple yet so enchanting riffs. First time I heard the leading
riff in "We Are Not Separate" my jaw hit the floor and I was like "how the hell
nobody invented that earlier?" His solos also left me totally dumbfouded. He
may not be technically the best guitarist ever (can't tell, he doesn't shred)
but he sure knows how to make a solo to compliment the song. There's no light
speed shredding on this cd, but Youngblood's stylistical sense is something I
haven't noticed in anybody else.
There's a touch of the Olde World here as well, the keyboards compliment Mr.
Younglood's guitarwork beautifully and these two elements together combined
with epic lyrics they build an atmosphere of the times of knights and
tournaments. I know it's early in 1997 and this album was released last year,
but this one will get my vote for the album of 1997.
We are not separate from what we destroy.
The time has come for us to make the only choice.

Hi 'jammers,
I've been at two Superior shows here in Paris last week, one acoustic at a
record shop and one "real" show. Both were great!
In particular I was impressed by the singer who really did a great job,
and, hmm, Bernd, of course you were great, too, as always! :)
They also played some new songs and some nice covers like Rush's Nobody's
Hero, and the French audience was going crazy!
Who else is going to be at the DT show in Tilburg on April 15 ?
I have to find a place where I could spend the night...
Just to make you jealous I'll list the bands that I will probably see live
within the next two months: Dream Theater, Enchant, Angra, Eldritch,
Threshold, Symphony X, Lemur Voice, Fates Warning, Conception! :) :) :)

I got the new QR yesterday. In my opinion it definitely isn't grunge. If
grunge sounded like this cd I would love listening to the radio... I also
dont think they sold out either. I'd rank this cd better than Empire or
PL. Is it just me or did they add a lot of vocal harmonies to this cd, a
lot more than before? I dont know about Chris Degarmo's voice on that one
track...
I also picked up GTR's King Biscuit Flower Hour. I like GTR and I guess
the band consisting of Steve Howe, Steve Hackett, Max Bacon, Jonathon
Mover is considered Prog Pop Rock... Great stuff by the way since I can't
find GTR's regular release at a normal price.
I also got Kip Winger's sold cd. This cd is pretty good. It is close to
Winger's last release but it isn't as dark. It definitely isn't anything
like Seventeen...
I got Live's new one last week. This one is good. Probably will have to
grow on me some...
I also got Aerosmith's new one last week. So far this just seems boring
to me...

I was browsing through my new issue of Rolling Stone Magazine today, and saw the list of bands on "The Saint" movie soundtrack. Lo and behold, there was a band called Superior. I was hoping it would be the Superior that we all know and love, but it's not.....There is another band calling themselves "Superior" now. Can they do this?? Anyways, here is what Rolling Stone had to say about the new band: (sounds like more alternicrap to me)
