Okay, been a long time since I posted, but I got some cool new tunes I
wanted to share some insights on.

    ANACRUSIS -- Manic Impressions

Somebody finally sent me the CD of this that I had been waiting on (hi
Chris).. :) Anyway, not quite as good as the album after it, Screams and
Whispers, but it's worth it just for 'I Love the World'. This band is
_my_ personal definition of progressive _heavy_ metal (emphasis on the
heavy part). The guitarists are quite talented, the band is tight, the
music is loud, and the screams are chilling. One thing about this band
that I find unique is their use of dissonance... they take this chord
that just grates at your soul, but they somehow manage to pull it off as
    something cohesive.

MIGHTY MIGHTY BOSSTONES -- Let's Face It

Haven't listened to this one a whole lot yet, due to album number three to
be reviewed, but I think it's going to grow on me. Their album Question
the Answers is one of my favorite discs, and the single from this one 'The
Impression that I Get' is true to that sound.. the other songs stray
somewhat from the earlier sound however, but I'm sure I'll really get into
this given a few more listens. These guys are what happens when you mix
rock/metal with jazz/ska... pretty unique sound and a lot of talented
guys. A good comparison might be a much heavier, grooveier version of
    Dave Matthews Band.

QUEENSRYCHE -- Hear in the Now Frontier

Yeah, everyone else is reviewing it, but I'm gonna do it too. Anyone who
didn't like Promised Land because it was too mellow should check this one
out.... this baby does indeed rock. I hear the grunge influences, but
that's what they are: 'influences'. The main riff to a song might sound
somewhat simple, but there's usually something else hanging in the mix. I
see this album as what happens if you throw Promised Land and a few
assorted grunge bands into a blender. I hear a lot of Promised Land
influences in this, but with the guitars and the aggression turned up.
I also think this album could bridge the older Ryche fans into giving PL a
second chance and discover what they were missing.

One last word on the track where Chris sings (All I Want): This song has
some serious groove to it... maybe one of my favorites so far. You want
progressive? This song sounds _SO_ much unlike Queensryche that I doubt
very many QR fans who heard it without knowing who it was would be able to
pick it out... definitely the Rychean influences in there, but just a
totally fresh twist. More of this stuff, please!! Wait, here comes 'Hit
the Black'.... nevermind, this works too... :)

    Hey all.
I just wanted to give my opinion on Images and Words "It sucks!"
Now that I have your attention, I will say that that quote up there was just
    a joke.
Actually, I bought the album about 5 years ago because I liked the
song "Pull me Under" which a very talented band at my old high school
covered the song, and actually did it very well. I put the CD in my rack
because I didn't like the rest of the songs. I waited about 2 years and I
pulled it out of my rack again, I had to "Take the time, re-evalute" I had
been listening to "shit" music, that alternative shit. I grew up and
realized that music revolves around talent. I am a drummer and I changed my
style because of this album. Again, I put it back into my CD rack, for
another time. I started listening to Rush at this time and it took up a lot
    of my time.
I started hanging out with a different group of guys. All musicians
and incidently all ytsejammers. They opened my eyes and I went out and got
both Awake and ACoS within two days of eachother. I listened to Awake and I
played it out. I listened to ACoS quite a bit too. It was at this point in
time that I realized the DT was the best group around. No group was as
good. I got all that I could of DT, and here I am today. Listening to all
    the albums.
Now, for the comparison. All the albums are very progressive. The
only thing that changes on all of the albums is the "heaviness" and
darkness. I really have to say that Awake is still my favorite album
because I am a big fan of dark heaviness to music, call me a headbanger if
you will. I really like how I could finally add superior talent to really
heavy stuff. It is the perfect mix for me.

Now for QR: This band, if you listen real intently to the albums, you will
see that every album is different. If you say they sold out, you are wrong
because Empire was as good of album as any of them to say that. They sold a
lot of records because of "Best I can" "Empire" and the super sellers
"Silent Lucidity" "Jet city woman". I haven't had the oportunity to buy
HITNF. I will tomorrow or rather today considering that it is 12:05 am now.
But from what I have heard around that it is great. Buy it. I bet you
won't be disappointed, I am going to.

BTW, Holy shit! 39 people dead in a mass suicide in California! WOW!
These religious cults are out of hand. First Waco and now this!!

from their previous releases. It grows on you though.

    Ahoy,

There is no such thing as a "decent" gunge song... that's why it's called
grunge... because it sucks and should be destroyed... I wouldn't call the
new Queensryche grunge either... there is still good songwriting there... I
admit some of the songs lack a hook or good solo.... but let's not jump to
conclusions and label it the most unworthy and pathetic excuse for a noise,
or grunge. I trust bands like Queensryche, Megadeth, Fates and DT to write
good material because they have continually done it in the past and still
hold those talents. yeah, the material on HitNF is much different, but it's
certainly not grunge.... that's a fact, not an opinion by the way... grunge
can be defined as CRAP. This is not crap.

    - and if fast solos aren't taken too kindly by grunge fans, who cares?
They're grunge fans - do they deserve anything better than death?

shitshitshitshitshitshit!!!!! No one should be able to see these bands
in such a short time frame. May all your CD covers develop those nasty
cracks that just keep growing and grooowing :-)

Since we are practically living in the dark ages here in the US as far
seeing live shows, could you PLEASE review these shows once you see
them. ELDRITCH and SYMPHONY X for God's sake!?!?!?!?!? Two bands so
insanely talented even their roadies sold their soul to the devil. Does
anyone have a review of ELDRITCH's new one "Headquake" yet..I just spoke
to Denis Gulbey (Sentinel Steel) and he said its great so far but not
too many details. He said he should get some in a month and will be
selling them for just $14..best prices I've ever seen. I just ordered
IMPELLITERI'S's debut EP for $10 from him!! (normally its $20-$25) I
also snagged a Japanese pressing of VICIOUS RUMORS "Soldiers of the
Night" (w/ Vinnie Moore) complete with tab inside(!!!!!) for just $16.

anyhow, whoever has has been lucky enough to hear the music of ELDRITCH
and SYMPHONY X..speak up....let your voice be a shining light in such
dark times as these. (Don't ask..I'm in a weird mood.)

P.S. I'm STILL waiting for that damned HELLOWEEN tour that was supposed
to hit the US..or was I dreaming 'bout that too....

    cheers,

When everytime you listen to it you still find some sort of meaning in it to you. Stop labeling with words and start label it with your ears. Later, Scott

This brings up an interesting point because of the situation with the band Bush. All over the world they're known as Bush *except* in Canada where they're called Bush-X. This is because there was a band in CAN named Bush many moons ago.

Now, my question is; since Superior is a German band would that effect what they're called in other countries? I know nothing about int'l law but I am curious. As far as I'm concerned there's only *one Superior, and it ain't a bunch of Brit-pop Beatle wannabees.

This is in regards to the question of whether Awake or I&W had better VOCAL content:

I think that Awake BLEW I&W away as far as JL's vocals. Two main examples in this album are: Voices and TSM. I could listen to Voices all day! This is (I feel), the most passionatley sung song that DT has. Also I think that there is a TON of diversity in the vocals on this album, from the growlings of Lie to the soft murmurs of SDV.

I agree with someone (name escapes me) that I&W is the instrumental album. Obvious examples: MPt1, LtL. Though the vocals are exceptional here too, I think JL progressed as a vocalist in Awake.

They did, however, have a keyboardist on tour to play the older songs. Jack Blades joined Damn Yankees with Tommy Shaw of Styx and Ted Nugent. They released two albums, then Jack and Tommy made one called Shaw/Blades. Brad Gillis made Gilrock Ranch and Jeff Watson made Lone Ranger. Then Brad and Kelly got Gary Moon (from?) to play bass and sing on Feeding Off the Mojo. So there you have it. I'm looking foward to hearing the new stuff. Later Trevor

When I got home yesterday, there was a *very* pleasent surprise. A new Stratovarius 5-track EP!!!!! I got it from a competition, and they say it will never be widely available, am i lucky or what!! The track listing is as follows: 1. Kiss Of Judas 2. Black Diamond 3. Kiss Of Judas (demo version) 4. Uncertainity (Live version) 5. Fourth reich (Live version)

Oooohhh It is *so* cool... I'll post a review, when I've given it a few spins more.

Also heard an Angra song yesterday, I heard it on Finnish radio's only metal program, Metal Union, but I was totally concentrated on other things (ok, my gf) and heard only when the DJ said "...aand that was Angra form Brazil..." could've kicked myself in the head. But the bit I heard sounded like Queen to me. (no flaming, just my opinion)

Sympathize with ya. I've always hated this term. It's generic. It sounds like the "authorities" couldn't come up with anything. What the Hell does X stand for? Couldn't ANY generation be called "X"? What the heck did I do to become an X, dammit! As for when this ended, have no idea. What generation are we in now, "Generation 101"? Sorry I'm off subject, but this topic has irked me for years.

I believe that (and I could very well be wrong) Generation X refers to the Roman Numeral X, meaning 10. If a generation is considered to be 20 years, then 1976 would be the tenth Generation since the American Declaration of Independence from England. I guess that would mean that if you were born sometime between 1956 to 1976, then you're a Gen-Xer. Maybe it's 1966-1986. I dunno, I don't care. Jus' my $.02.

..back to the English paper :(

Peace be with you and God bless, ~Vince
