Well, talking about vocals, I think I&W blews Awake away, absolutely. On
Awake, JL sings mainly raspy os is just sighing. I even think the producer
did a poor work on Awake as James' voice isn't nearly as sharply ringing as
    on I&W.
James has an awesome clean tone (listen to I&W), but I think growling just
doesn't suit his voice. That style of singing requires a stronger throat he
has. Talking about growling, James Hetfield is the man to look at (of better
    listen to :-)).

There is NOT one Superior. Indeed, if you want to protect your band name, it works like any other product: it becomes a trademark.

Here's how it works in Switzerland: To protect "MT20" as our band name will cost us 800 Swiss Francs to protect only in Switzerland + 1000 Francs extension + 70 Francs per additional country. So if there are 210 countries worldwide, such protection will cost16500 Swiss Francs.

For instance, 800 Francs gets us only national protection, and we can't stop a band in neighbouring France from calling themselves MT20.

Local jammers, how was Jon Finn Group last night? I'll be sure and catch 'em the next time. It did bring up an interesting thought, though:

If there was a triple bill with Jon Finn Group, Fates Warning and Dream Theater, would people go? Say a 6 hour show, with JFG and FW getting 90 minutes each and DT playing their dicks off for an unimaginable 3 !!!!

There'd have to be 2 intermissions, though, in order to calm the fuck down :):)

Sorry, I've always been rather excessive...which leads me to:

    Hi Folks,

Ok the Nuernberg tickets are on sale (and actually have been for about 2 weeks now). They are 39DM and then whatever charges they have added. I got mine COD and they turned out to be like 42DM (but heck, it is DT so who care!).

So who else out there in Ytsejam land is going to the Nuernberg concert? If you are please e-mail me and I will start a little mailing just for us folks.

Most important I know the venue is called "Forum" but I don't have an address or phone number for it yet. Does anyone have this info? I would like to know the address so I can actually get to the place after I get off the train *grin*. I have some info about bars for after the show. But I am interested in finding a cheap hotel so I can get some sleep before going to Munich the next day.

Speaking of Munich. My sources say tickets aren't on sale yet. If someone knows different please e-mail me because I need 2 tickets!

Also I don't have an address or phone number for this place called "Babylon". Any help here? I have looked in veraious magazines but no place has it listed *shrug*.

Please e-mail me if you are going to this show.

Now tickets for Bonn have been an sale a long time. Mine were 39DM (same as Nuernberg). I do have an address for the "Biskuithalle" so I should be able to find it. And I have some suggestions for bars as well.

If anyone is going to thsi shows please e-mail me.

In summary another American and myself will be in Nuernberg, Munich and Bonn. We would like to meet up with some other jammers before the shows. Of course we want to do some sightseeing in Southern Germany (since I haven't seen much out of Hamburg).

I am planning on making a big banner to hold up at the shows. Something about the ytsejam on it with an American flag or something. Should be cool! Talk to you all later.

We were listening to 98 rock (Baltimore) yesterday at work and the DJ was doing some speel and I was hardly listening then she said what was coming up and said Dream Theater. i was like "huh? what she say?". Sure and behold after the commercial and 1 or 2 songs Pull Me Under came on. Has DT become part of the playlist at 98 Rock? I mean this has been the 3rd time PMU as been on that I know about in the last month.

Cheap Trick, INXS, Rush, Queensryche (tour dates please!!), Nuno Bettencourt, Collective Soul, Rush (I'm seeing 'em twice), and if Megadeth ever releases their album, you can bet I'll be there!

There you have it folks! All in the NY/NJ metropolitan area. I passed up on Metallica, nosebleed arena seats suck no matter who the band may be. I can't wait to see my first outdoor Rush show... And my second. And maybe even a third, if I feel ambitious.

I was just skimming thru my jams and someone asked if somebody had a used HitNF cd for sale. It just came out like 3 days ago! Just buy it! Its only 11.99 at Circuit City. If people keep buying "used" cd's, then the market won't recognize that people have the cd. I have to say, that after listening to the entire album, it really does ROCK! There are some different guitar sounds, but some really cool grooves. As far as the Awake versus Images and Words debate, I offer this. It is established that we all love the music of DT. So, in my opinion, one album is not better than the other. All of it is DT, and whatever DT puts on cd, is the best. I don't matchup the three cd's. (WDADU included) I say, if its DT, then its all good! Some songs are heavier, others are lighter, all are awesome! That's the idea. Tony

    Well, first things first:

LEVIATHAN: --------- I FINALLY got my Leviathan CD "Riddles, Questions, Poetry, and Outrage" from Century Media Redcords. After having sent me the WRONG CD, they quickly amended themselves by rushing the CORRECT CD to me. Good for them!

Here's what I think of this CD: I was at first disappointed at the quality of the CD compared to the other Leviathan CD I have entitled "Deepest Secrets Beneath". RQP&O had a better voalist I thought, but he was generally mixed WAY in the background. The new drummer sounds very similar to the previous drummer, but not quite as good (I'm a drummer remember). The new bassist is better, but you can only tell on the first track. Anyway, I think Leviathan should FORGET ABOUT trying to do ANY slow tunes!! It just doesn't work out! They tried doing ballads on a couple tracks, and those are the longest, worst songs on the CD. A few tracks are really cool and rock like the previous CD, but generally it has a lot less prog. metal nature to it. More keyboards did add a good touch to the CD though. I'd have to give this one a 7 out of 10. Deepest Secrets Beneath (1993) gets a 9 out of 10 IMO. Oh well, it should grow on me, cause it is vastly different than what you hear typically, but they just don't seem to blend melodies too well. In fact, the melody lines sound bizarre at times, I guess a sign of prog....

Queensryche, HitNF: ------------------ I've never seen such incredibly mixed reactions over a CD before by Queensryche!!! I think those who talk about Q-ryche selling out at any time are totally messed!!!! I think Empire is their BEST album, and Operation Mindcrime NEVER did much for me. Also, Promised Land was a change of pace, as well as HitNF. If bands made CDs sound like all their previous ones (i.e. Black Crowes), then they would have a difficult time to keep current fans interested, or to make new fans.

I think Q-ryche felt like doing a CD which is simpler and heavier. What's your problem with that, folks?!?! I think this CD ROCKS BIG TIME! There are a couple lame songs, namely "hero" . Hero reminds me of a bad Black Crowes song.....Other than that, most of the other tracks are at least tolerable, and I personally HATE grunge and alternative. This IS NOT Alternryche. It's different, and just like Q-ryche sings in Cuckoo (I think) - I won't stop trying for change. EVERYONE - DON'T EXPECT MINDCRIME, EMPIRE STUFF ANYMORE. This rocks the Earth compared to most everything else, and I think the guitars and bass are stronger than the previous 2 CDs.

Finally, I'm seriously worried that because DT is so rigid on their musical beliefs (which I'm GLAD for, because if one band should NOT ever change their style, it's DT), and continue to make nothing but LONG songs (which I personally think is totally cool - I LOVE long songs and prog), that recording companies will be reluctant to work with DT in making a great CD. So many companies and radio stations, etc. are hooked on this fucking shit that is played on the radio that they won't support prog with quality long songs and unreal solos. It truly sucks!! I think that Q-ryche did a GOOD job in attacking every song, making them shorter. I DO MISS the solo sections, though. Unfortunately, the majority of today's young folks have to short of an attention span and lack of intelligence to appreciate long, complex solos. Just think - it takes a lot of concentration to absorb DT-esque material. Well, I'd better get off my soapbox now - I can go on and on about this topic.....Comments, arguments??? E-mail me please!!

    Jon Case jcase@rossby.ou.edu

P.S. - where the hell can I get any CD by "Lemur Voice"? I've heard great stuff about this band, and so far I have a 100% success ratio in finding great new bands via blind recommendations by YTSEjammers. I found out about Shadow Gallery, and Galactic Cowboys via the jam so far.

I have another Impelliterri cd... with equally good guitars, and better vocals, but on this one all of the lyrics are cliche Yngwie type stuff, and the rhythms are too similar. > From: Scott M Peters <sretep@iastate.edu> > Subject: classifing music

Simply has to happen. Someone asks you "What's DT like?" you can say "It's like this big... it really has this... sound... the musicians are technically proficient..." or you can say "They're progressive, like the complexity of Rush and the Dixie Dregs mixed with the melody of Fates Warning and Queensryche" and blammo, your friend will have a bit of an idea what to expect. I'm all for surprising people, and tricking them into giving an open minded listen to music by not telling them who or what to expect, but when it comes down to it, classifications are neccessary. Just because you label music doesn't mean the band is confined to that style. That's a myth. I don't even know if what I'm saying had anything to do with your post... just got me to thinking. For all I know, you may completely agree with / disagree with what I'm saying.

    > Sympathize with ya. I've always hated this term. It's generic. It sounds > like the "authorities" couldn't come up with anything. What the Hell does X > stand for? Couldn't ANY generation be called "X"?

That's exactly it... it's made to be generic. It's a label slapped on many people to generalize their age/culture. Generation X means "Undefined Generation"... X is used as a variable. But just so you know, anyone on this list that's under 20-25 or so isn't really generation X. We're slowly being called "Generation Y" (or as Pepsi says. "Generation NeXt"). Every generation defames the group that comes after it. It's worthless to argue about the relevance for that reason. Don't live up to your label. Live up to your ideals.

Why not make a list of all the bands that sold out:

    1) Motley Crue- with their self-titled album. However, I still think this was their strongest album and John Corabi outdid that whining ass Vince Neil by a million miles. Too bad Vince is back in the band!

    2) Metallica- with their album Load. Once again, I think this CD has some great songs like "King Nothing", "Ain't My Bitch" and yes, screw what everyone thinks but I love "Until It Sleeps". Plus, I saw them the other night in concert and it was pretty good...

    3) Queensryche- with their brand new album Hear In The Now Frontier. I heard some of it and it sounds damn good actually. I'm planning on buying it today if it isn't sold out again.

    4) Carcass- with their album Heartwork. Once again, one of their best albums..it incorporates melody along with keeping the death metal style

    5) Flotsam And Jetsam- with their 1992 album Cuatro. All of their albums are great and to me, none of them are sellouts, to others..well, who cares???

Anyone know any more? Well, I'm off to another attempt to buy the new Queensryche disc. Wish me luck!!

I have a request from everyone on the JAM. Why not have everyone post their personal favorite top 10 CDs by any groups of all-time. So, go into your CD changers, CD collection, and rank your favorite CDs. Rank your top 10 CDs from 1 (favorite) to 10 (tenth favorite) - (DUH - right?). Single CDs DO NOT COUNT! They must be "official" releases! So, I'll be posting mine soon as well. I've got to dig out my best CDs and rank 'em. That way, maybe some of us will be turned onto other good CDs that we don't normally see in the stores. Also, we can prob. see what other CDs may be like, simply by recognizing a trend among individual's tastes and groupings with other CDs.

For starters, I know I will include in my top ten the following:

Images and Words, Awake, Empire, Now, doing a top ten requires other CDs besides Dream Theater :-)
