    Hi People,
I was just wondering if anybody heard the Dance Remix of Silent
Lucidity. I just got this newsletter from this Dance Music store
(Yes I like Club\Techno music) and it was like number 25 on their
local chart. I've never heard or even known it existed. Maybe it's
a local Chicago Rx, who knows?
    Later,

Um... Jon's been around for a long time, and he's a friend of the
Wacky One. I think you misunderstood his comment.

The vocals are weaker. Different singer. DWoT is usually on sale
for about $32. It's worth much much more. IMO, easily their best album,
and also IMO the best Prog Metal album ever.

What the fuck is this newbie bashing all about? For all you know
he may be older than yuo, and have played music for longer/been a DT fan
for longer. I don't see how the time frame during which he joined the jam
makes any difference. Sure, correct someone if they're wrong, of course.
But don't you think insults are a bit extreme for the post he sent?

Fuck that. I think you should all shower more regularly... I skip
a shower every now and then, but I'm WAY FUCKING cleaner than everyone
else. I think all you guitarists should quit guitar. I screw up a note
every now and then, but not NEARLY as fucking often as everyone else.

    plain old wrong.)

You have to expect some ribbing when you make a suggestion like
you did. Most of the comments were not flames. I only saw one, and I did
    speak up about that.

    > Also, I AM STILL INTERESTED IN PEOPLE'S TOP 10 LISTS. PLEASE E-MAIL ME

I think the jam will benefit from a poll like this, so long as
    it's done in private e-mail.

    > Least favorite: "Get A Life". What was Geoff thinking on that chorus!

My GF and I agreed on this as well, on Tuesday. That song is
just... not good. Listen to it and you'll prolly understand.

    My QR Review

The new album is a grungier album, to be sure, HOWEVER, I don't
think you can call it a sell out. If QR wanted to sell out and go Grunge
I think they did a poor job. Some of the melodies and ideas are just not
"hip" enough by MTV/Radio standards to sell, I think. I believe this is
the natural progression for this band. They want to get away from their
80's sound that we loved so much.
I think about half of the album is good, and half of the album is
bad. There are no killer solos, but I expect none from QR. They lack
some of the harmonies I had hoped for (Dual guitar or background vocals)
and I think Geoff needs to do more.
Overall, I found the album to be okay. It's not worth the money
IMO (I bought a copy for Maddy), but then, I'm a guitarist, and I really
love complex music or grooving music. The good songs on HitNF are
grooving... none are complex. If you dig this album, more power to ya.
I personally think that the band I know as Queensryche is no more.
I don't hate the pod people that have replaced them... I just miss the
old QR. The tour will be my only hope for a revitalized opinion of the
    band.

IMHO, QR are definitely peers with Cobain, as well as other
Seattle-based bands. Granted that their early work doesn't have the
same sound as many Seattle bands, but they are peers nonetheless. I
think QR are the better musicians, but both bands are rock bands, both
are Seattle bands, and both are popular nationally. I agree that Cobain
was a rather pathetic individual, but he was a talented songwriter and
musician long before he became a self-pitying, drug-addicted suicide
    victim. (Is suicidee a word?!)

Bravo. OK, now about QR - does it sound like QR doing grunge, or grunge bands doing QR? I'm tempted to buy this thing just to get an idea for what all of you are talking about (and to see this cover artwork).

Speaking of artwork - does anyone else miss the days when cover art really *was* art? The old Zep albums, and stuff like that? I mean, take a look at FW's "Inside Out." WTF is that? Or Metallica's Black Album.

Boy, I really gotta choose better stuff to get under my skin.

Yeah. I have "Screams and Whispers" and there's some really great work on that disc. How many did they make? Any of the band members doing anything now?

    > dt question... on images and words, was the end of pull me under a cut off > in the studio, or does the band actually just stop? i realize in concert the > latter occurs, but it sounds as though they just cut the recording short for > the cd.

They cut it off because Mike's hair was getting in the way, so he stopped playing. Hence the reason he shaved it off.

    > also, without a doubt, the vocals are far superior on images and words. > awake is too growly, distorted, would be grunge. lie would be far better if > the chorus wasn't sung so horridly.

But that style fits in a song like "Lie." I mean, the persona in that song is fucking pissed. If James had sung that the way he sung "Another Day," for instance, it just wouldn't have carried the same emotion.

Well, first of all, it is against the rules of the list. True, there's been some dumb shit on the list lately, but the notion that top-10 lists are somehow less bad doesn't make them more good.

I don't think Pat was attacking you for the idea, and I'm sure he didn't mean it as a personal attack. Yes, the other top 10 lists (while occasionally quite amusing) don't belong here either. I'm sure Pat just had the best intentions for the list in mind.

Depending on what is still considered grunge these days, I'd have to disagree with that. (I don't watch MTV much at all, and I don't listen to the radio, so I don't know what's still grunge or not.) But some of the bands that were in that scene were/are quite talented.

Does AIC fit under the grunge umbrella? They're damned good. Soundgarden? They kick my ass. Seven Mary Three, while not technically outstanding, know how to write a catchy tune.

    Try to avoid those over-generalizations.

    > QR peers with Kurt Cobain? Ouch! That is the worst insult anyone could > lay on a musician or a human being in general. The only thing that

It's true. They were both professional musicians at the same time, from the same area, and in the same (very general) genre of music (perhaps more so now, judging from what I've heard about HitNF).

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Regarding the new material on HitNF, it doesn't really surprise me to hear grunge influences on the album. QR is a Seattle-based band, after all, and that city is the home and center of grunge rock. It's not surprising that Geoff, Chris and the rest QR might be influenced by their peers in Seattle - namely Chris Cornell (an amazing talent), Eddie Vedder (an amazing talent), and the late Kurt Cobain (an amazing disappointment). >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> From what I understand, the band NEVER hung out with the "grunge" crowd and there was a general dislike from Cobain towards the "other" metal scene. Just hearsay...Anyway, check out the film called "Hype" (recently discussed here) and see how grune was only one small part of the scene. Other reading (I wish I could list :( ) would show that the grunge sound and variations of it were beginning to build in other parts of America, too. Seattle just got the spotlight from the corporations. My opinion: If HITNF was my introduction to QR, they wouldn't be one of my favorite bands...I don't even know if I'd buy another of their albums. I'm a O:M fan. I think there's a slight grunge feel to HITNF (unfortunately I believe) but SOOOO much of it is QR. It's much more like E and PL.....Empire, as someone mentioned, really is the "departure" album. I think the differences between it and O:M are greatest between any two QR albums. Steve

Hi all!! I am just checking in from Illinois where I'm still on my trip, after having my wedding reception there with my in-law half of the family. (The Arizona reception is to follow in May or June for my half).

I should be returning tomorrow. The flight will effectively lose me the day, and I will be back home at night, but once I return home, I'm ready to begin shipping of Precious Things. Also, because of a gift from the wedding, I now have seven gigs to play with on my system at home, and I will put Darkest of Winters and Virtual Songs on and begin shipping cyclically. This is a big relief to everyone who ordered TDOW and VS, it means cutting a lot of the wait out. It is a minor annoyance to people with late numbers of PT, because it will take a little longer to get those to you if I'm shipping all discs concurrently. However most of you who are late numbers of PT also have TDOW and VS orders in, so the good sort of outweighs the bad. :)

Anyway, I want to express that I really feel sorry for any of you who actually LIVE here in Illinois. I'm in Elgin, 34 miles west of Chicago, but it's more or less unbroken suburbia from here to the city. I've been around the entire area at this point, and I have a few observations: 1. Damn, it's cold. I was _swimming_ before I left home. 2. They really need to fix your streets up. I mean really, since you have that weird "toll" thing going, you'd think the streets would be in awesome shape, but they're not. Blame your local elected officials. 3. The food is and has been fantastic for the balance of the trip. If there's one thing you Chicago-area folks do exceptionally well, it's cooking. All the interesting "regional" dishes have been outstanding. 4. They gotta get that zoning guy off the bourbon. What ever happened to simple grids of mile streets? Phoenix is so easy to get around in, I could do it blind. I could LIVE in Chicago and never get it right. 5. Snow. That's about all I have to say. Which leads me to... 6. I got... Two Tickets to Paradise!! Won't you... Pack your bags, we'll leave tonight... (etc). That lyric actually applies here! :) 7. The Chicago Equinox office was awesome!

Anyway I've bored you all enough. Thanks for putting up with a week of dead air from my end of the frequency. I've been going batty without a net connection this whole time, til I finally got time to come here to the library and telnet over to goodnet.

Take care all!! I'll be home shortly.

What I'm saying is Motley Crue, Queensryche, and Metallica might have sold out but I still love it. Nothing will stop me from loving Hooligan's Holiday (Crue), King Nothing or Until It Sleeps (Metallica) or even Sign Of The Times. I never care if a band sells out or not neither. But technically, Queensryche sold out with Eyes Of A Stranger, Motley Crue sold out with Home Sweet Home and Metallica sold out with Fade To Black if your looking at just song airplay.

I finally have the new Queensryche album and am probably the last person to submit my review but fear not, its short. Sign Of The Times- great song..love it even if everyone else hates it.

Get A Life- boring chorus...sounds like Silverchair wrote the chorus Some People Fly- didn't appeal to me very much Saved- awesome chorus when Geoff screams Save Me!! Cool song You- awesome groove to it....fave part, the end--"I'm upside down- inside out..." Hero- "greedy spider"- sounds kind of like a familiar Bush lyric All I Want- very unique..wouldn't want to hear Chris' voice all the time but for the one track, its cool Hit The Black- guitar reminded me of Bullet With Butterfly Wings by Smashing Pumpkins, verses remind me of Overkill- pretty cool song SpOOl- kind of an eerie song but doesn't compare to Promised Land (the song)...enjoyed it

Overall reaction- Well, its different but it will grow on me. Promised Land did so I can't imagine this not. Despite what people say, Geoff does scream here and there on the album..I really didn't want to hear The Warning all over again where alls he does is screams. Definitely my least favorite but I still enjoyed some of it.

Whay about the version of the cover inside the booklet with the words "I love you" on it. A reference to Van Gogh?

BTW- I like the album, for many of the same reasons others have already stated. The one thing it seems to lack (after only a few listens) are the dynamic peaks and valleys...hmm..
