I can't compare it to those, not having heard them, but Thud is an amazing
album. It's kind of like Kevin Moore or Tori Amos, songwriting-wise, with
a more guitar (acoustic mostly) and organ-oriented sound. The lyrics are
great, there's a lot of interesting stuff going on musically (especially
in Shadow Self) and a lot of emotion and humor. It took a while to grow on
me, but it's one of my favourites now. Highly recommended.

is Cacophony. I think it's "Savage" from Speed Metal Symphony. I know
it's something off of that album. Horrible lyrics, horrible singer, but
with Marty Friedman and Jason Becker they had some great guitar work in
that band.

Someone posted this in the last jam: also, does anyone else think that the new DT won't be as good as the others? The new songs that I have heard just don't seem to 'rock'. It almost isn't metal anymore. There is a more jazzy alternative feel to them. But I guess we should wait for the studio versions!
I think that you need to relisten to the new songs. They are much heavier, groove infested and whats more, marketable. I don't feel anything more than that the new album will be "rip off your head and shit down your neck metal" Songs like, "Burning my soul" "Peruvian Skies" "Just let me Breathe" and more "balladish" songs are planned for the new album. No offense man, but I think either you are jitterish about new material or you really haven't listened to the new stuff. It rocks!! Of course, there has been a lot of discussion in the past about the new stuff being less progressive, but who really cares, IT'S DREAM THEATER!!

I don't like it very much. It is basically a pop rock album with lot of acoustic guitar. Kevin's vocals are good and is upfront in the mix.

The only people I've ever met who get defensive after hearing drummer jokes are people who call themselves drummers and know they suck. Drummers who are confident about the way they play usually just laugh it off and hit me back with a bass-player joke, after which I usually go tell my mom and cry in my room for a while. >>

I wonder who's more ignorant... the person/people that made these "comments" (I use the term lightly because I don't believe any such conversations have existed, and thus quoting them is an act of creative fiction) or the person that believes that stupidity is an American phenomenon.

I went to Europe last year and one of the Countries we went through is Belguim or however the stupid thing is spelled. It took us less than one hour to drive through the stupid thing. So don't get all bent out of shape because Americans don't know every little cobblestone in Holland.

Hey, I must second that recommendation for Saviour Machine's Legend Pt. 1 (and any other of their albums). It is better than their other albums, as a whole. The guitar sound seems a lot beefier/heavier than before, and there is a better mix between the guitars and keys. Oh, and it clocks in at about 78 min. :). I alos just read that they will likely be touring Europe sometime in the near future, and, when the entire trilogy is released, they plan on doing a full-on show featuring all three parts of the Legend series (we're talking a four hour concert here :). Of course, that won't be for another 2 or 3 years if it happens as planned. Eh, good things come to those who wait.

I don't agree on this one. I think Gary hasn't the vocal strength that suits VH (Sammy didn't too, Dave did). VH needs a strong vocalist like John Bush or Geoff Tate. IMO the best thing that can happen to VH is the return of Dave (It's reunion time after all).

So myself and two guys named Andi wanted to go from Hamburg to Uelsen to witness the Superior live show. So I rented a car and we were set for the 3 hour drive (it helped that Sixt messed up my reservation and I got a BMW instead of a VW Golf *grin*).
Now I am originally from Maine in the USA so I know what it is like to live in the middle of nowhere. And Uelsen was definitely there. Lots of fields and not much else.
The rental car was from Munich and I was wearing a sweatshirt from a soccer team in Hamburg. So I think the locals knew we weren't from around those parts *chuckle*. But we found a little place to get some greasy hamburgers so that was fine.
Then we needed to look for the venue. Finally we found what looked like some guys house that had kind of an extension on the back. This turned out to be the "hall" (loosely put).
We were only 2 hours early or so. We went in and met Bernd Basmer (one of the guitarists from Superior). Very cool to meet someone that I had only talked to on e-mail before. The Superior guys had driven 5 hours to get to this place (who was the promoter to blame for this anyway?).
So after chatting for a while Bernd he and the rest of the band wanted to go back to their hotel and rest and get ready. We then went out to the car and listened to some stuff while waiting for more people to show up.
Well finally they would let people in for the show. We paid the high price of 12DM (about $8 *big grin*) to get in. Looks like all the locals of the town were there that night. Everybody knew eveybody else, except us of course. We were just considered boys from the big city *laugh*.
After watching the people for a bit it was decided amongst the 3 of us not to touch any of the women or we wouldn't get out alive. Also I kept my soccer sweater kind of hidden so as not to provoke rabid fans of other teams. Seems like there were about 30-40 people in total there.
The opneing band, Walce, was a local band. Most of the people there knew the songs. I got the feeling these guy open for every band that comes through town *laugh*. They payed standard metal, nothing special but not really horrible either. But I just wanted them to end since I was waiting for Superior.
Finally Walce finished and Superior took the stage. All the boring locals were sitting down and chatting. So I got close to the stage and prepared to rock!
Here is the set list in order taken right from the list that Bernd gave me from the stage *grin*:

So 3 new songs not from "Behind". Everything sounded great. Vocals were right on target. And Jan the keyboarder's hand is good again so he was playing great! I was standing in the front singing all the songs while the locals just kind of stood back in awe. But they bought many CDs after the show and got them signed. I guess they know real talent when they see it, even in Uelsen *grin*.
I was waiting for some songs from "Moral Alliance" or "Timeshift" but I guess theye didn't want to play any oldies. I would have loved to hear "Odysee". The other guitar player Michael laughed when I mentioned this to him. And he asked "how do you know this stuff?". I gave my usual evil grin and didn't answer.
After the show we hung out with the band and I passed on some Dream Theater knowledge to members of Superior and of course we talked about how bad America is for metal *shrug*.
If you can catch these guys in concert do it! They will be playing a show in central Germany this summer. Might be time to rent another car *grin*.
